Also, tips: Use %ProgramFiles% for the default installation directory (it depends on language on older Windows versions), %AppData% for the Minecraft default path (so you don't have to know the username), %UserProfile% if you want just the user directory.

XP or below might be out of luck. You might be able to create a link file (*.lnk), but no idea if Steam would even accept it - likely not. A junction is only able to link to a directory (I mis-remembered that one), so it's less helpful too, and can't be used on non-NTFS file systems, like in Win98 or earlier.
