Namely Astral Chain and Fire Emblem

I took a break from Astral Chain because I finally got Nier Automata.

Which was really, really good and I totally understand the hype around it now.

Code Vein has some interesting variations on the Soulsborne formula, but it could use some balancing.

I heard it's a little grindy but I'm not necessarily opposed to that.

Bayonets (the ranged weapon) are comically overshadowed by the other weapons.

@InvaderSkoodge I haven't really felt the need to grind for bosses so far, except for one boss which I was apparently doing out of sequence.

Other than that, I've been tackling bosses as I progress without much grinding.

Is it as punishing as Dark Souls?

Invasions are a bit dumb and the dodge hitboxes/timings are slightly wonky, imo.

But the latter might be because of needed adjustments from previous Soulsborne-esque games.

I have a feeling pretty much any dodge timing is going to feel awful compared to Nier Automata's generous invincibility.

@InvaderSkoodge I mean, I guess? What would you consider punishing?

Jim Sterling was lyrical about it because the game has an absurd amount of character customization

Enemies tend to combo you much easier in Code Vein, it seems.

which, contrary to Dark Souls, is NOT tied to your gear

I guess I don't have a great definition for punishing.

At least in my experience when I get hit at the start of a combo, I usually get hit by most of the combo.

One of my main complaints with Dark Souls was how much it felt like I was wasting my time after I died, getting back to where I died to try again.

Whereas in Dark Souls, I can generally button-mash dodges to get out.

@InvaderSkoodge I haven't died too much but I think checkpoints are closer together than I remember in Dark Souls.

@Yuuki Ok, well all I can do is give it a try and hope for the best.

I actually like the overly fanservicey anime aesthetic more than Dark Souls's dreary art style, so maybe this is the one to finally capture my interest.

Some enemy attacks are annoying because they do a sweep attack and I dodge the beginning but then get hit by the sweep-around.

Anyway, this was my allotted 5 minutes of free time since I have a 1-week-old baby today.

@Wrigglenite I really enjoyed the way it blended all sorts of different kinds of action gameplay seamlessly, and I really liked the slow reveal and layers of plot.

Like yeah, faces are for the most part visible on most armor pieces.

It's a video game that has fun gameplay but is also actual art.

But I haven't found a transmog option/mechanic for armor yet.

I just had this feeling of wonder through most of the game that I very rarely get from games.

@Yuuki In Code Vein, you can customize your entire character, and according to Jim, it's separate from your actual gear power, contrary to Dark Souls where Fashion Souls has your gear, appearance and power connecte

Eh... there's face and body customization yeah (and it's really good and versatile).

At least, that's what I understood from his Jimquisition

But there's still models for armor pieces and stuff.

For the most part, armor is all on the same level so if you like a particular look, you can generally stick with it and it'll stay competitive with other armor pieces you pick up.

But it's still part of your gear power.

Armor still possesses stats like resistances and scaling.

The difference, I think, is that your armor is all one piece whereas you have different slots in Dark Souls.

And a lot of Dark Souls gear tends to have face-covering helmets.

You lose a bit in the sense that you can't mix-and-match armor pieces for a particular look but at least you can see your face.

There is a food duplication glitch that works, but I'm interested in a way to dupe any item that can be done earl...

oh and also there's no undead/ashen form so you look like you all the time instead of occasionally looking like a particularly old raisin or like you decided to do burning man in your backyard except no one showed up so you had to be the burning man

@InvaderSkoodge Dark souls trains endurance. Being able to get to a point where you can win fights over and over without resting in between

Code Vein does a good job, so far, with placing a checkpoint before a boss so you only have to fight maybe one or two enemies before getting to a boss.

The issue is that these checkpoints are generally hidden to a degree, so you'll need to explore a bit to find the checkpoint before the boss.

The only checkpoints you are "guaranteed" to get consist of the one right at the beginning of the zone and the one after you beat the boss.

Every other one, you'll have to explore, sometimes out of your way, to get.
