with mass effect 3 I thought it was awesome until the final 15 minutes

and the final 15 minutes were so bad that it destroyed my opinion of the rest of the game

I now recommend Mass Effect 1 and nothing else. It's the best game in the series.

Elevators aside, it's got the best story.

@Alok It's good. But it suffers heavily from "middle game in a trilogy" syndrome, and doesn't have much of anything to do with ME1 or ME2.

@Alok it isn't "great", its not "bad" either, and is a definite iterative improvement in many ways over ME1 but as @QAvenDreamer says it suffers from not really having a 'start' and 'finish' to the story

@ickleislands Don't wish for things that turn out wrong - I used to get > 150 ms latency earlier and had no problems. Nowadays I get < 100 ms often, and suddenly get a lag spike that doesn't even register on the little green bar.
