Apoligies if appear to be link-dumping, I just think some of this stuff is neat.
He found something interesting on the internet! Get him!
@RedRiderX Thank you. Nobody else seems to notice it...
> Monaco VLog #4 - So... about the Redhead. Can a male designer design a seductress without being a douche?
@GnomeSlicE It did take me a while to notice...
@RedRiderX It's been like this for days.
@GnomeSlicE Well I actually haven't been here for days.
00:19
Hey, that's cool. RPG started a Saturday night game. I assume played in a chatroom. I may have to look into that...
Would it make you feel better if I was planning on commenting on it, then didn't?
@GnomeSlicE I noticed the moment you pointed it out.
@RedRiderX You're excused.
@GnomeSlicE I thank you.
Jeez, this is so dumb.
I dunno if you guys are familiar with the development of Monaco.
But basically, they're implementing the 'Redhead' character, who is supposed to be a seductress whose skills involve distracting and luring enemies.
OH LOOK, CONTROVERSY.
00:23
Oh my goodness...I'm browsing the starred list and can't stop laughing....now I remember why I come here.
@John Are you reading about @Spugsley's penis.
@GnomeSlicE Ok, that's a bit disturbing....and definitely no. Definitely definitely DEFINITELY NO.
doesn't even want to find that conversation

Q: How do I get 'The Throwdown' achievement in Deus Ex Human Revolution?

ickleislandsThe Throwdown is an unlisted achievement that doesn't show in the Steam achievement list until you have completed it which involves getting William "Bill" Taggart to reveal the location of his associate Isaiah Sandoval. What do I have to do in order to get this achievement?

Thank you @Lazers, for changing the subject.
@John But for some odd reason, all @Lazers seems to talk about is Diablo 3.
00:27
@RedRiderX Yeah...@Lazers has kinda a one-track mind.
First it was Skyrim, then ME3, now this...
@John I feel like posting a really obscure question to change things up. Something about frogatto, or Viva Pinata on the PC, or maybe even Sim City 2000.
Fuck. I don't have a high enough poly count.
@RedRiderX SIM CITY I WOULD TOTALLY ANSWER.
If I could find it.
@John Really? I'm talking Sim City 2000.
starts over
00:30
... as in 90's.
Seriously, what do you guys think of this?
@RedRiderX If it's the one I played as a kid...
has a flashback
@GnomeSlicE Sorry, I'll have to leave soon, and I don't think I have the time to engage in a great philosophical argument right now.
@John I'm talking SimCity 2000 Special Edition. With all the good stuff and interviews with Will Wright.
@GnomeSlicE I was here before Gaming Exhcnage was named Arqade.com, i dont really no much about the chat features, and what youtube channel?
@RedRiderX Well then I have no clue. I was little, I don't remember much except building a city, then unleashing monsters onto it.
00:35
oh and " We're talking about you like you're not here, sorry about that." i wasnt there
@John That was one of the best parts.
I would always leave my city open overnight, and come back with loads and loads of cash.
@John I shouldn't really say was, as I still have the cd, and do play it occasionally.
@RedRiderX I really need to find an open-source clone of it. Or, yaknow, my CD, but I have a feeling the clone might be easier...
@John You can buy it "new" on GOG.
00:40
There is exactly one SC2k question on this site... asked by yours truly
@RedRiderX Eh, I don't like spending money on things I'm not positive will work. People not always supporting alternative operating systems, and all. Thanks for the link, though!
@GnomeSlicE oh the youtube channel.... that was something i wanted to do with some mates, gaming reviews and that kinda thing, but we had a bit of a falling out, and i was the only one left who wanted to do it, but i stopped cause i wasnt any good at it, essicaly video editing. Might start it back up later if found someon else to do it with, but till then, its just a dead channel really
@GarethJones Well you know...
There are some people here proficient in video editing.
@John Which alternative OS do you use? Anyway, Abandonia has a copy of SC2k, though it is of dubious legality
@YiJiang Just Ubuntu, but I like to sound exotic. :P
00:43
@GnomeSlicE that there are
Download the Abandonia version. GoG wraps all of its games in a Windows installer that's likely to cause more problems
@YiJiang Ack.
@John Exotic, you say?
Exotic Ubuntu (not entirely sfw)
@John I now it might sound weird, but I run my SC2k CD "natively" on a ME PC.
@GnomeSlicE Wise decision.
00:45
@John I would have done it from the beginning, but you can't when you're posting images.
@GnomeSlicE, I really did not need to see that again, thank you.
@RedRiderX Hm..interesting...
@GnomeSlicE Oh. Huh.
Oh I guess I could have just... yeah you can.
@John No, yeah, you can't when you're UPLOADING images.
Images from the web you can. You just use the URL as a link.
@GnomeSlicE whats your point?
@RedRiderX Spoilsport.
@GarethJones What sorts of things do you need?
00:47
@GnomeSlicE Your welcome.
@RedRiderX ಠ_ಠ
@GnomeSlice, mainly just putting the vid together into one file, and maby an overlay of the name.....
that kinda thing
@GarethJones Overlay of the name being your channel name?
@GnomeSlicE normaly i do it in MovieMaker, which makes it look crap more often than not. And ya that kinda thing.
You should go all-out and do something like this youtube.com/…
00:48
@John I actually have a lot of old games I run on it.
@GarethJones I'd offer to help you out, but my internet connection is ungodly slow.
that would be cool
I'd never be able to send and recieve files to/from you.
@GnomeSlicE lol fair enough
@GarethJones @RonanForman might be willing to help you out, but I'm not sure.
00:50
I must now go, but I will leave you with one last curiosity.
I could help you out, but I'd only be able to get and give you things on Thursday nights throughout the summer, while I'm at school.
@RedRiderX I wonder how many of those my dad has.
@GnomeSlicE that could work, even a vid a week would work. Most of my sending would be at school myself (making use of free school wifi without using my own internet bill up_
*)
My father was on the local news a few years ago for his Old Computer Collection.
@GarethJones I can't guarantee I'd be able to follow a schedule though, unfortunately.
I'm also currently working on the branding screen for the new 'Arqade Community'.
@GnomeSlicE you know of any video joiners like movie maker? only better and free. And same here. Im on last year NCEA, so the workload means my free time moves from place to place
@GnomeSlicE but school holidays coming up, and i often run out of games to play.....
@GarethJones Not many, Do you have a mac?

Q: Does killing Brent Radford fail the Pacifist achievement?

ickleislandsI am doing the side quest "Acquaintances Forgotten", where I have come across an individual named Brent Radford who is severely injured after being beaten by some guys who're after information on you. Because I've heard iMovie (built in) is better than Movie Maker.
@GnomeSlice na, all i really want is to join the files, so if i did pass them to you they would be in the right order, with nothing more than likea fade in and out here and there. Like i said, id do it in movei maker, but that has a thing where it makes eveyrhting 640 x 800 or whaterver, and the end product has really bad res
@GarethJones To be honest, if you just want to stitch videos, movie maker is fine. If it's coming out looking like shit, you're using the wrong video settings.
Just a sec.
@GnomeSlicE really? ive had freinds who have the same issue..... might have to take a another look. The main thing i wnat to do with MM is have one or two fades and stitch videos, then id look at things like overlay and effects in another program
@GarethJones If you're not adverse to spending a little money, Power Director is apparently extremely powerful for the money.
00:58
@GnomeSlice k might havea look at it
@GarethJones There's also AVS Video Editor, not sure if it's 'free with restrictions' though, have to take another look.
Been a while since I tried it out.
@GarethJones And any of these should work as well, and I think most or all of them are free.
Getting so close to a completely full clear of human revolution
missing like 2 published achs and 5 hidden ones
@GnomeSliceE the youtube one seems good
Hmmm why are my posts being marked down?
@ickleislands someone dont like you?
01:01
apparently, they got marked up and then somebody else marked them down
@GarethJones Iève heard good things about Movie Masher too.
@GnomeSlicE think ive tryed the AVS editor, and its not that great (for the free one)

A: Strategies for Tap Tap Revenge 4?

GnomeSlicEI find the best way to do it is to use three fingers, one per lane. If that doesn't work, just try experimenting with different variations of where you hold your hand. Some people play with two fingers, some with only one (except for the multi-note sections, obviously).

@ickleislands This got a downvote too.
No idea why.
01:02
Maybe someone is on a downvote spree.
could be
Any way to find out who? And what are the reprocussions to whomever is spamming downvotes
spelling*
Hm, no, I don't see any votes on a few questions from around the same time as my answer so I'm not sure.
I'm assuming mine was downvoted because it was an answer to a really bad question, even though answers to bad questions are usually scored very highly.
the questions and answers don't already exist on the site and are concise
im guesing yours got an upvote too
cause its me its 0
01:04
There should definitely be a 'requires X rep to downvote' rule with the amount of downvoting going on recently
@GarethJones Yeah.
they do
@GarethJones ye I got upvotes and downvotes
dont they?
Yeah, there's a rep requirement.
It's not much, but it's there.
01:05
125 Vote down (costs 1 rep on answers)
People are getting really elitist here it seems, sometimes.
so look for someone whos rep has dropped a small amount
@GnomeSlicE not me I hope
but at the same time rather large amonut.
@GarethJones No, that's not necessary. Serial downvoting gets caught by the system automatically, but that's only if you vote continuously on posts from one user.
Votes are a user's prerogative.
01:06
ah ok
makes sense
If he doesn't like a lot of stuff... well, then he doesn't.
lol, we cant change what he likes
not really fussed, a single up vote is worth more than 4 downvotes
I've been trying to bring up some issues I have with how some voting has been going as of late but the general response is 'no u'.
01:07
@ickleislands No, and not much
yeah it's not the first time I've seen this particular conversation
and I've only been around here ~2 weeks
You will never find out who voted for what unless the person explicitly reveals it
right now to find out if the kapiti council labor or national
hence my 'requires X to downvote' comment, but if there is already a system in place then there is a system in place :p
And the only repercussion of serial voting is that the votes will be reversed at the end of the day
By an automatic script
01:08
I figured a Q/A about a hidden achievement that didn't already exist on Arqade was a good idea
Mods I believe can review the data, but the fact that their actions are futile means that most people don't try more than once
what time is "end of the day" like, its US time ay?
I might be wrong, but I'm under the impression that there's a group of high0rep users on the site that have begun to behave a little like a clique. I feel like there are some double standards going on. Similar posts from the two groups do not get the same amount of attention or score.
@YiJiang Sort of. Mods have tools to examine patterns, but it takes an employee to actually see who voted for whom.
@GnomeSlicE I would hope that behaviour like that on a community driven site would have the individuals responsible banned from it
@GnomeSlicE or that you're just being paranoid :p
01:10
@GnomeSlicE Attention and score are usually correlated. And that's only because certain games are more popular
@ickleislands It's not against the rules. I probably am making it out to be more than it is, but I refuse to believe those kinds of issues aren't there at all.
@YiJiang Bad questions about popular games get really high scores.
Actually, the rules are pretty simple: vote for content, not the user. That's it.
@GnomeSlicE no but such behaviour would be damaging to the community as a whole
and completely devalues it
@YiJiang Of course, and everyone says that, but to be honest I'm not convinced it's the case pretty often.
I up vote stuff I like and downvote stuff I don't, but the threshold that I upvote is a lot more easy going than the threshold required for me to downvote something
I figured that would be the way that most people do it?
01:12
I wrote a question about how women were portrayed in a game a while ago. The general community response was that they hated it with a passion, but even still, @Oak's answer on the question ended up with a net score over 10.
Look, the solution is simple. Post a discussion on Meta, back up your claim with data, then talk about how we could deal with it. Talking about it on chat is not productive in actually resolving the issue
So okay, answers on bad questions can get high scores. In fact, from my experience they often do.
But the one I just linked, my answer to the bad Tap Tap 4 question got a downvote almost immediately.
@GnomeSlicE Yes, there is a reversal badge for that, specifically
@YiJiang that was a very defensive statement for something I'm not actually that bothered about, don't mistake me for trying to cause trouble when all I'm doing is taking 5 minutes out from sneaking around people
"My answers get downvotes because people don't like me" arguments seldom work out well... I feel like we've been around this block a few times on meta already. (Or maybe all the sites I follow are blending together in my head.)
01:14
:5087245 Eh, this doesn't prove anything. It's one post, which got one downvote.
You're saying that its somehow the community or a group that's doing it.
@AnnaLear I would imagine with the framework SE is built upon and the amount of users present that it would have been bought up at least on 10% of the sites
@AnnaLear I dunno, I feel like if anyone else had asked for ponies on the bridge to be put behind text links it would have gone over better. It still might not have gone through, but I'm not convinced it would have been met with such hostility.
@ickleislands I'm not defensive, but these are serious question and if @GnomeSlicE is going to be serious about them, the way to go would be to actually ask on Meta
@ickleislands It periodically comes up on Meta Stack Overflow. Usually along the lines of "are high-rep users getting all the votes."
oh god
'donk' spam
donk
@YiJiang cool I wasn't sure if it was aimed at me/gnome/both - I always try to come across with the best intentions
01:17
@YiJiang I already tried that, it got deleted almost immediately.
Everyone just assumes I'm trolling for attention when I bring it up, or something.
@AnnaLear counter argument to such a statement is that is the point - those users have a high reputation with the community and thus people will take what they say more seriously. That's like being the new guy in the room and trying to tell everybody they're wrong
@ickleislands @GnomeSlicE is by no means "new". His rep is in the top 4% of users here
@YiJiang I am the 0.1% when it comes to chat suspensions, though.
@YiJiang and then obviously it must be something else
Not the point.
01:19
Is it just me, or do you find that your voice sounds really dumb when your like watching a vid on youtube (with you talking in it) compared to what you sounded like when recording it?
@ickleislands There's a correlation between someone having high reputation and posting good answers. Chicken and egg thing.
I get the impression people don't even want to think about it. When I say 'Hey, you guys, I've noticed some patterns, and I think we should discuss them' I get 'no u'.
@GarethJones Yes. All the time.
@YiJiang like, in my particular case that provoked this instance of the discussion, I'm 100% happy to put it down to my suddenly raising a bunch of self-answered questions about the same game in the space of a few hours
@lesspopmorefizz Did the TV you won come with a wall mount? I'm trying to determine if my folks may have thrown it out accidentally during their interim custodianship.
@ickleislands I believe his point is that because of certain things he said or did in the past that there's now a group of users who vote against him because of the history
01:20
The bitter truth of Stack Exchange: low-rep users get down-voted for being new. High-rep users get down-voted for being successful. The bourgeoisie get fatter and lazier.
@AnnaLear not to mention a legacy of posts that will continue to be viewed and voted for in addition to any new posts made
@GnomeSlicE you have no idea how much better that makes me feel
@GarethJones That's why I hate doing voice calls on Skype, for example.
@ickleislands Yeah, Jon Skeet on SO routinely caps daily rep from old posts alone.
@GarethJones Everybody hates their own voice. Well, almost everybody I think
01:21
@YiJiang No, that's not it. Just a small part of it. It's not about me.
it's just a cascading effect, like I said I've only been around for 2 weeks or so and I already get random upvotes from posts I made on my first day here. I can't even begin to imagine what kind of effect that will have in a month or a year
@ickleislands Not much, take my word for it.
@GarethJones Blame your skull. Speaking causes your skull to resonate so you effectively "hear" everything you say twice. Once through your ear canal (regular speech) and once through your whole skull resonating (bass)
Obviously, you don't get this with recorded speech.
Especially if you're me and you ask about a million games nobody else even cares about.
@GnomeSlicE the other thing is, any instance I've been downvoted has been because of me doing something wrong
01:22
@QAvenDreamer i htink i read that somewhere.... oh well, still makes me feel beter
*better
@GnomeSlicE that's life though, the mainstream always wins
@ickleislands Yeah, I don't think I'd be accurate in saying the same thing about me.
If I made pop music instead of dance music I wouldn't need a day job
mainstream>all
@GnomeSlicE heres a vid that a) i think movie maker decrease the quality on, b) i sonud crap and c) what im saying / how im saying it seems crap
@GnomeSlicE To be frank, here's how the system works: if you ask a question that gets little views, and therefore little votes, then your post hasn't helped as many people as, say, another post for a popular question that gets a lot of views.
01:23
There is nothing wrong with suggesting ponies be put behind links in the chat, for example, the answer could just be 'no', but I got raged at. People wanted me suspended.
@YiJiang Oh of course, I'm not arguing that, we were on a tangent.
@GnomeSlicE One argument at a time. If we're talking about votes... why does your objection to ponies come into play?
@GnomeSlicE *sigh* Was this the "immediately deleted" post you're talking about?
@GarethJones I can't stream from youtube any more, my internet has gotten too slow as of late. But again, it's all down to video render settings.
It feels kind of irrelevant. Even as active as this chat gets, it still get a fraction of users from the main site.
Because the reason for that is because it made you look like a hypocrite
01:24
@AnnaLear I thought were were talking about the community attitude?
@GnomeSlicE I'm still trying to get at your main issue here
I don't even remember what we were talking about.
@GnomeSlicE ah ok, its worth the watching if you can at some point
Attitude is kind of broad. Is it with regards to voting, or your behavior, or something else?
@GnomeSlicE Not sure. We seem to be bouncing between topics.
So... how about those video games, eh? ;)
01:25
back to
My main issue is that there seems to be a lot (more than I think there should be) of voting, attention, attitude, whatever that doesn't seem quite right to me on the site.
lol nice
thing is I'm doing a pacifist playthrough!
accidentally murdered somebody by throwing a barrel out of the way -.-
I get the impression that people (not everyone, but enough) are interacting with the site and the community in a very close-minded way. i.e. they upvote shitty questions on games they like, they downvote or rage at users they don't like (new users) without giving them a chance to figure out how the system works.
For example.
01:27
Hey
@GnomeSlicE I sympathize with that. If you want to make a strong argument out of that, though, you will want to keep an eye out for examples that don't involve you. Not saying that what you're experiencing doesn't exist, but just that it usually works better to bring up a variety of examples... rude comments, questions that look inappropriately downvoted, etc. Compile all that and bring it to meta with a positive tone ("how do we fix this" vs "you all suck").
I can't come up with very good ways to explain it... let me try with an anecdote though.
Anecdotes make everything better
(Really over expanded example) If a new user posts a perfectly fine question with the word 'purchase' in it, it will get downvoted to hell, and voted for closure. If a high-rep user everyone knows posts a similar question, it will get a normal score.
That's just an example, to a really high degree to try to explain what I'm talking about.
@GnomeSlicE If you're talking about the WWE question, that was a terrible question regardless of that word
We've been over this, haven't we?
01:30
@YiJiang What? No, no, I wasn't talking about that question.
I said it was an example.
There aren't that many examples of questions like that.
People seem to let things slide if posted by an established user, but crack down on it if a new user does.
@GnomeSlice might break out fraps later today after im done with this dumb internal for geo. See what i can come up with, might see about a Age of Empires 3 vid
@GarethJones Start with like a 10 second recording, and just keep trying to render it until you get settings that look good.
Look, a hypothetical example isn't helping here. Pull out real examples please. Use the review page to find posts by new users and compare them against those by users with higher reps
01:32
@GnomeSlicE in that case could do it now, have some old clips left around.... just got to make sure dad dont catch me <.< >.>
It is reasonably fair to say that most new users to not create questions and answers of the same quality of those who've been here a while
New users' questions/answers tend to be a lot shorter and lack detail
just my opinion
@YiJiang I'm not trying to accuse anyone, is nobody else capable of running with the discussion for a bit to see what they can come up with, because I'm notoriously terrible at explaining myself.
@GnomeSlicE I don't really want you to explain so much as I want evidence
There's plenty of posts with the word 'purchase': gaming.stackexchange.com/search?tab=newest&q=purchase.
@YiJiang It was just an example of the kind of.. ergh.
(I know you're not talking about it that literally, but you have to give me something to work with here)

Q: How much in-game time has passed between Portal 1 and 2?

KeenAt the start of Portal 2, it's clear that time has passed. You've been woken up every few months for physical and mental fitness tests, until something goes wrong and you're left in stasis for much longer. How long is Chell, your character, in stasis? How much time has passed between the end o...

Okay well, this isn't a terribly good question.
We can't answer it, the only ones who could answer it definitively are the devs.
But it has a net score of 41.
@GnomeSlicE ok windows 7 movie maker seems a lot better than windows xp movie maker...
Not to mention the fact that it's the same as my question about breast physics in Soul Calibur V where everyone on the site said 'this isn't an actual problem that you face'. Neither is this.
@GnomeSlicE Score isn't a just dependent on quality. It's also about popularity
@YiJiang Right, yes, but that has one downvote.
It's not a good question for the site, but it's about Portal 2.
@GnomeSlicE It's a slightly more useful question, with regards to the fact that it's about in game lore
01:39
@YiJiang More useful? I would argue that the one about breast physics is more useful, whereas the Portal one is more interesting.
I can't believe I finally got a "Famous Question" badge...and it's on a site I never even use. -_-
Hey, that site only has three of them.
I like to think that after being a user for such a long time, I have a pretty good grasp on what is 'good' content for the site, and what isn't so good.
I guess this is the benefit of getting in the private beta and asking a common question. :P
@GnomeSlicE I don't think anyone has a perfect grasp of that.
If we banned all the questions anyone said ban, we'd never have any questions.
I didn't say perfect.
@GnomeSlicE The point is, no one on this site ever agrees with each other. Ever.
And, in most disagreements, someone must be wrong.
01:42
Yes but is that something unique to arqade or SE sites in general?
It's not always you, mind you, but sometimes it has to be.
Is Arqade the norm or the exception?
@ickleislands Certain sites have more tension than others. Programmers.SE, for example, has always been a very embattled site.
Yeah, it varies. Some communities are pretty argumentative. Some are elitist. Some are permissive. Some are basically nonexistent. :P
Programmers will argue out the best way to perform a task, there are so many ways to do X and each will have a strong opinion based on what they believe to be the best
01:44
Arqade has one of the more engaged communities across all sites, which is part of what makes this site work as well as it does. Arguments and whatnot are an inevitable side-effect of that (and also important - heated arguments mean people care).
Why gamers argue over whether a question about some game they don't play is valid is just strange
@ickleislands Programmers SE also has a special history. It's got a troubled past. :)
user2334
:(
@MarkTrapp /brohug
01:46
@John You mean me.
Is there a point in asking why or is that all hush? :p
@ickleislands Lemme dig up a meta post. :)
user2334
@GnomeSlicE I've found that when one is convinced they are the victim to a plot or conspiracy, it becomes a self-perpetuating condition because they tend to self-select incidents that confirm the hypothesis and ignore or downplay those that don't.
2
An elitist community driven QA site sounds awfully counter intuitive
@MarkTrapp It's not about me. What I meant by that was that I appear to be the only one who agrees with me about this.
01:48
31
A: Why was the Programmers site on Stack Exchange created?

Shog9Origin Story If you browse questions on Meta for a bit, you'll quickly realize that there are a fair number of people who want to use SO for things that SO wasn't designed to be used for: discussions, polls, flame-wars, endless lists... And over time, this has created some amount of irritation o...

All these stars
@GnomeSlicE Mmmhmm, I get what you mean, but some of those problems are inherent with questions about plot
user2334
@GnomeSlicE It's not about you, it's about the fact that the only person who agrees with yourself is you?
@YiJiang Granted. I don't even want the Portal question to be closed, because I'm a fan of trivia questions. I'm just saying I wish the community was consistent.
@MarkTrapp When I said you mean me being wrong, I was referring to the fact that every time I've brought up these concerns, the general response was 'no u'.
i.e. I'm the only one who sees issues.
01:50
Yeah, I'd say that we are more lax about plot questions.
user2334
@GnomeSlicE Have you ever stopped to consider that your assessment of the Portal question, which you bring up every time you want to demonstrate Gaming's bias against your questions, is just plain mistaken?
@YiJiang Also Portal questions. And Skyrim questions. And Diablo questions.
@MarkTrapp I have. Seriously. And I've determined that it's not.
That's the thing. Has everyone else?
@ickleislands Drastically changing the scope of a site partway through its beta period works about as well as you'd expect. Programmers still has bitter scope arguments, over a year after graduation, although it's mostly settled down now. @MarkTrapp and I used to be moderators there, so we got battle scars, so to speak. :)
Everyone says 'you refuse to think from our perspective' but I don't.
@AnnaLear I know, I asked a question on a site in beta called 'Fitness and Nutrition' about diets and it got closed as off topic because the site had changed scope but it hadn't been reflected in Area51
Which provoked about 0.5 seconds of rage
01:52
I feel like the rest of you can't be bothered to look at it objectively. 'Oh hey, someone doesn't like a Portal question, they must be wrong because portal is awesome'.
user2334
@GnomeSlicE And nearly everyone else has determined that it is. What's more logical: that everyone you bring it up to is mistaken and out to get you, or that you're mistaken?
Again, I know that's not what it's really like.

Q: Skyrim Smithing

MatthewEveryone says that iron daggers are the best way to level smithing. I found that iron ore and silver ore transmuted by alteration magic into gold ore and then smelted into gold ingots which make gold necklaces seems to be faster and it certainly is cheaper to mine iron and gold. Is this better th...

@ickleislands Are site definitions updated on A51 after the site itself has gone beta?
@MarkTrapp So what you're saying is that I was correct when I said I was always wrong.
01:52
@YiJiang Not usually, no.
You're missing the point of the discussion entirely.
@YiJiang I don't know, I've been here two weeks and I'm still working it out
Shouldn't you be looking at the site's Meta instead?
@YiJiang Explain the way YOU do things to a new user and see if you get a strange look
@GnomeSlicE You'd have to provide examples of those too
01:53
@ickleislands Yeah, they've had a lot of problems with that over time. They're called "Physical Fitness" now.
@YiJiang new users don't KNOW where to look, so its counter intuitive
@ickleislands Sorry, what do you mean by that?
@YiJiang as it stands, I did look on meta and did see they had renamed
@ickleislands Okay, technically speaking the only place you'd have to look on a SE site for which questions are on topic is the faq
ok, If I google 'nutrition stack exchange'
I get fitness.SE
I ask nutrition question
01:54
@ickleislands CURSE YOU GOOGLE
The problem is that when a site is in beta, the faq doesn't get updated very often
it gets closed
I am a day 0 user who has never used stack exchange before
user2334
@GnomeSlicE I'm saying you trot out this argument about how the rules are inconsistent because "look my perfectly good question got downvoted/closed when this Portal question has a million up votes" every few days, and it goes nowhere. At a certain point, you can either a) agree to disagree and drop it, b) concede that maybe you got it wrong and there is something different about the questions you're asking and the ones that are popular
that chain of events potentially prevents me from coming back
still trying to get over the fact that my quiestion couldnt be answer due to "unethical" methods
user2334
01:55
@GnomeSlicE or c) come up with a more cogent argument than "this site is elitist"
I just don't get why the default reaction, instead of let's all think about what he's saying for a bit and see if we can find any merit to it because he's clearly incapable on his own is well, he must be wrong.
as it happens, I've been on gaming.se so I have a very basic understanding of what you guys do and how you do it
@MarkTrapp That is not my argument...
so as I went on meta to ask why it had been closed I noticed they'd changed their scope
@GnomeSlicE You could bring up some other examples
01:55
@ickleislands Yeah, that's fair. It's definitely a concern. We encourage people on beta sites to explain closures and whatnot. As gently as possible. Most times a closed question isn't a death sentence, although sometimes off-topic is off-topic and there's not much to be done about it.
you see what I mean now?
@AnnaLear the point is, from my initial perception my question wasn't off topic because the site is advertised both on google (due to it not refreshing) and on area 51 as a fitness and nutrition Q&A site
@ickleislands Yup, but the site is in beta, and things do get shifted around a lot during that time. Like I said, the only place you should need to look is the faq
my initial perception said I was right
@YiJiang Well, that thing about ponies, for example. Why was that met with such rage?
@ickleislands Yeah, I hear ya.
01:57
@YiJiang the technicalities are irrelevant, it's about user experience
user2334
@GnomeSlicE What rage? Point out examples of people raging.
I can't think of any reason why that particular post deserved such violent lashback.
@GnomeSlicE You made yourself look like a hypocrite
user2334
@GnomeSlicE What violent lashback? Point out examples of violent lash back.
@YiJiang How? I never said I felt like I had the right to post nsfw women for all to see.
@MarkTrapp Everyone got all uptight.
01:57
@ickleislands Mmmhmm, yeah, but you'd have to blame Google now
@GnomeSlicE And yet you did do that, all the time?
user2334
@GnomeSlicE Point to specific examples. You're straw manning like it's your job right now
@YiJiang I never remember, I didn't say I do it on purpose.
@MarkTrapp I'm what?
user2334
A straw man is a type of argument and is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. To "attack a straw man" is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position. Origin The origins of the term are unclear. The usage of the term in rhetoric suggests a human figure made of straw which is easily knocked down or destroyed, such as a military training dummy, scarecrow, or effigy. The rhetor...
Okay, not violent.
But everyone got really mad.
You also did a pretty poor job of presenting what you were trying to say, making it sound to others like you want those content removed outright
01:59
For no reason.
@YiJiang Yes, I did, thank you.
Have we met?
@GnomeSlice What, exactly, do you expect to happen? One by one all topics (or images) that someone is merely not a fan of become banned? You're free to leave, you're not free to dictate terms to others (unless you start your own chat service or whatever). — Matthew Read Apr 8 at 1:17
