I find the best way to do it is to use three fingers, one per lane. If that doesn't work, just try experimenting with different variations of where you hold your hand. Some people play with two fingers, some with only one (except for the multi-note sections, obviously).

I get the impression that people (not everyone, but enough) are interacting with the site and the community in a very close-minded way. i.e. they upvote shitty questions on games they like, they downvote or rage at users they don't like (new users) without giving them a chance to figure out how the system works.

Not saying that what you're experiencing doesn't exist, but just that it usually works better to bring up a variety of examples... rude comments, questions that look inappropriately downvoted, etc. Compile all that and bring it to meta with a positive tone ("how do we fix this" vs "you all suck").

(Really over expanded example) If a new user posts a perfectly fine question with the word 'purchase' in it, it will get downvoted to hell, and voted for closure. If a high-rep user everyone knows posts a similar question, it will get a normal score.

That's just an example, to a really high degree to try to explain what I'm talking about.

@ickleislands Drastically changing the scope of a site partway through its beta period works about as well as you'd expect. Programmers still has bitter scope arguments, over a year after graduation, although it's mostly settled down now. @MarkTrapp and I used to be moderators there, so we got battle scars, so to speak. :)
