Q: How do you get more Boosts in the Steam Grand Prix?

WriggleniteThe Steam Grand Prix has lots of weird and unintuitive rules. You can use Boosts to spend up to 1000 distance points to make your team go faster, but I don't see any way to earn more Boosts once they've ran out. Is it possible to gain more Boosts? How?

Q: An Issue With Italian Kingdom Hearts 3

Snek_DklesA couple months ago, I had ordered KH3 online and got it delivered. Due to me having not gotten past re:Chain of Memories at the time, I didn't pay much attention to it until just recently when I finished Chi Back Cover. As it turns out, the copy of KH3 I have is in Italian. My question is aimed ...

dly
oh.. steam sale and I'm almost broke because of summer break. To hell with holidays >.<

Well, looks like I'm going to Michigan on Fourth of July Weekend

user15026
Is this a yay thing?

dly
I'm going... to work

Ave
@dly yay, I'm also broke

user15026
9:33 PM
Concentrating at work is all but impossibel right now

Ave
broke gang, broke gang

@Ash Yes, just sorta last minute :P

user15026
Like I just can't.

user15026
Getting through tomorrow is gonna be torture

user15026
@SaintWacko well, yay then! :D

Ave
9:33 PM
@Ash is everything okay?

dly
Thank God I don't have to be concentrated at work all the time. The temps would kill me if I had to

@Ave I think it's the last day before their husband arrives

Ave
aah
I should hang out here more

user15026
@Wrigglenite you would be correct

@Ave I blame the lack of starred messages
2

dly
9:37 PM
@Ave yep, stop flying around the globe every day :P

user15026
Tomorrow is my last day of work before I have an ENTIRE WHOLE HUSBAND IN MY HOUSE.
10

Ave
@Wrigglenite we ought to fix that, cc @Ash
oops, you ninja'd.

@Wrigglenite Does that help?

user15026
giggles you guys are dorks.

user15026
I love you all.
10

Ave
9:38 PM
@dly ah, I wish I was flying around the globe more often than I do
@Ash I don't like to speak on behalf of a group but I'm sure that everyone agrees with this, so... We, as your family here at bridge, love you too, @Ash.

dly
@Ave I see you talking about airports a lot, so I thought you do already

@Ave Seconded

Ave
@dly no, I just am having a wild week or so

@Ave I'll add my voice to this, so you don't have to speak for me

dly
I'm on tour every 2nd week and that is already enough

user15026
9:40 PM
@Ave Aww, that's making me wobbly in the best way. :D

Ave
a friend is staying over at our place for this week (hence why last airport troubles, so that we could welcome her), a friend is coming from $city tomorrow and I'm excited etc
also I have important business tomorrow that's going to be at a time when I'm not home
let's just hope that I can do it over mobile data
and no one gets too angry at me

user15026
I hope it all works out and that you have fun with your friends!

Ave
honestly I just want to lie down for a whole month rn lol
work is wild, personal life is wild

dly
@Ave If you ever go via Düsseldorf or Frankfurt, give me a call :P I know a few people there taking care about everything. Last time I checked in I went directly to the plane after customs.
it would require an extra badge to bypass customs.. meh

Ave
ah my current employer is too much of a cheapstake not very keen at sending us abroad, so when I do travel it's inside the country, going to clients and all
but it's very likely that I'll go to ccc and that might involve either of those airports
so if it does, I'll ask for your help, thanks!

dly
9:44 PM
We travel by bus if its less than half a day of bus travel xD
almost never by train and long distance by plane

Ave
we usually go by car
unless it's far-ish

When you're trying to be different so you put the expiration date on your relish in the Julian calendar

Ave
ankara, which is 4-6 hours by car, is far, and we go by plane in such cases.

dly
we're like 30-40 people.. cars would make no sense :D

That expiration date means: "the 140th day in 2020 in the Julian calendar" btw

9:46 PM
@Nzall that doesnt look like relish

@Dragonrage It's the sauce that came with the british hamburger

Ave
@dly that's a lot of buses
or, like, 2

dly
@Ave just one actually
if its full, our vans carrying the equipment take the remaining peeps, but thats hardly the case

@Nzall maybe relish means something else in other countries

user15026
Relishes can be all sorts of things

user15026
9:53 PM
I've seen tomato relishes and peach relishes and zucchini relishes and so on

user15026
Relish just usually seems to be "slightly chunky sauce thing"

@Ash I'm not sure if I relish the thought of eating peach relish

user15026
giggles

Ave
@Ash, mind if I poke you to talk about life stuff?

Slightly related, but learning food names as a non-native can be a nightmare

9:54 PM
p sure for most people in the usa relish means pickle relish

user15026
@Ave Go ahead, you know where to find me :D

dly
@Wrigglenite yep! :D

Ave
steam?

user15026
@Wrigglenite Oh, I can only imagine

user15026
@Ave Steam or discord, whichever works

9:54 PM
@Wrigglenite learning english can be a nightmare

dly
@Dragonrage thats actually easy, compared to french or german (even as a native)

@dly for french, its easy. just dont pronounce half the letters and you probably nailed it :P

dly
@Dragonrage yea :D

Anyone have recommendations for good puzzle games on Switch? I haven't played many in a while

9:57 PM
for german, i think you just smash a bunch of words that describe whatever it is you are talking about into one word, and it will probably be close
disclaimer, i know very little french or german

dly
@Dragonrage almost, yes :P (I'm native german and also know some french)
and sometimes its easier to say something in english instead of german.. even as a native >.<

So do the French call French Fries "Our Fries"?
@Ash Extrapolating, by next month you'll have over 40 husbands in your house

user15026
@PrivatePansy If that's how this works I am gonna need a bigger house

dly
@PrivatePansy "frites", but I wouldn't be surprised if they did

user15026
@Stormblessed I don't know if Yono and the Celestial Elephants (nintendo.com/games/detail/…) counts but I loved it and it is hella cute

10:13 PM
@Yuuki Didn't you break into @InvaderSkoodge house, take his children hostage, and said you'd only return them if he changed his name?

Welp. Bitburner is eating my brain.

@AlexMyers holy snap, crackle and pop. I thought you meant you were getting 60 rep from it (aka +6 score), not that it was at +60 votes.
I feel like that indicates MS needs to make their UI better. Or something.
Also I just tuned into this pokemon run, and it's pretty rad.
I guess people are making donations that match their favourite pokemon number?
And it's raking in the donations.
They're currently sitting at close to 400k donations.

@ToxicFrog Oh, I just looked it up and went to the website...this tutorial is intimidating

@Stormblessed it's a very niche game for which the target playerbase is basically "people who enjoyed Uplink and who also know, or are willing to learn, JavaScript"

@Wipqozn thats pretty cool. unfortunately most of the games i want to watch are at inoppurtune times for me to watch :( will have to catch the vods of a lot of the runs

10:17 PM
Which (un)fortunately describes me pretty well
I'm on iteration 3 and I have a master program that automatically discovers and root all available systems on the network and uses their processing power to hack millions of dollars per second so that I can fund my intense addiction to cybernetic augments

user15026
@ToxicFrog aka very you

The stream is currently dying though

This game seems cool
(I was playing Boxboy, which this is only a few levels of complexity above :P)

@Ash pretty much, although I could wish for a different implementation language

user15026
@ToxicFrog yeah, that was the only part I wasn't sure how much was your jam

10:24 PM
I think I've written more JS for this game than for anything else in my life and it's taken me from being kind of abstractly unimpressed with async/await to actively despising it
I mean, the game does have a command to download code from your computer into the game, so if this gets too annoying I can always look into other languages that compile into JS~

@ToxicFrog What kind of issues are you having with async/await?

@murgatroid99 from a programming perspective (not implementation, I know), it's like coroutines, except an error-prone pain in the ass
You can't just yield, you have to annotate any function that might yield and any function that might call that function all the way up the call chain
And you have to specially annotate the call sites of those functions in ways that restrict how they can be used

Well, not exactly. You can always just threat the return value of an async function as a promise and then use it in a non-async function

And if you forget the call-site annotation, maybe you're lucky and you get a type error because you got a future<T> instead of a T, or maybe you're unlucky because you didn't use the return value and your program just silently stops working.
Or you can manually wrangle the returned futures, which defeats the entire purpose
Coming from languages like lua where you can yield() at any point and with no special handling or annotations as long as coroutine.create() was called at some point in the past, this is shockingly bad.
I assume there is some compelling implementation or compatibility reason why the JS designers had to settle for this, but ick.

When I use it, I think it helps to treat them as separate things: async makes a function return a promise that asynchronously resolves to the return value, and await lets you yield and then get the resolved value of that promise
@ToxicFrog If you expect language features to be the same as different features from different languages, you're always going to be disappointed

10:31 PM
In practice you can't treat them separtaely, though, because any function that awaits must be marked async, and any async function must either be awaited or have the returned future manually handled.
That's not my complaint and if you think it was you really haven't been reading, or I haven't been expressing myself clearly.

You know, it probably helps that I work in TypeScript, where you get clear visibility and type checking for "this function returns a Promise, this other function returns just a value"

Yeah, this is just plain shoot-from-the-hip JS

@ToxicFrog My point is that you have choices to do something other than await on the result of async functions, and you can await on Promises from other sources
It's true that you can only await in async functions, because yielding with an await statement necessarily makes the function finish asynchronously

And I think my complaint can basically be boiled down to: there's lots of stuff that returns promises to get around the fact that JS execution isn't yieldable or preemptable; async/await encourages you to treat those functions as coroutine yields instead, which is sometimes convenient (and is, in particular, meant to be more convenient than chaining .andThen()); however, it's really bad and frustrating
at that if you're used to real coroutines rather than a syntax sugar for state machine transformations that just tries to look like them.

I think trying to shoehorn JS's async/await functionality into the model of coroutines is not helping you understand how to approach using them. It's just its own thing
The async/await model is more like a standard call stack, except that other unrelated things can happen concurrently

10:44 PM
Yes, I know that.
My objection is not that I don't understand what they do, or how they are implemented, or what they replace, or how to use them.
My objection is that actually using them requires a pile of boilerplate and introduces a bunch of new and exciting failure modes that will if you're lucky result in a runtime exception, and if you're unlucky will just hard-lock the browser tab and/or silently fail to do important things.
(I'm also unclear on how you think "it's more like a standard call stack, except that other unrelated things can happen concurrently" meaningfully distinguishes between coroutines, async/await, and preemptable threads)
Anyways. I'm going to walk along the lake now, and when I get back I will hopefully have enough Tian Di Hui reputation to buy their entire stock of augments and shove them into my head.

@ToxicFrog With coroutines and preemptible threads, you can have function call A yield to function call B, and then go back and forth within those two function calls. With async/await, you can have A await on B, and then other stuff can happen in the mean time, but no more of A will run until B has finished.

Any Geometry Dash players here?

Tried to buy 4 games I don't even need on steam. Store keeps timing out. THANKS FOR SAVING ME FROM MYSELF, VALVE

If so, did you know that Geometry Dash can be used for programming?

MilkyWay90Geometry Dash - 15 objects Finally done. 15 objects aren't much, but it was still a nightmare to do this (especially because of the negative numbers). Is it Turing complete?

Ben
10:56 PM
Morning all. I feel like this question is a dupe, but I'm not sure.

@murgatroid99 Yeah
You can transpile logic gates and BrainF*** to Geometry Dash triggers
There's just one issue
It does every trigger in the program at once
So you have to make increasing delays
Which makes it reeally slow to program in Geometry Dash

I don't know how I feel about @TimStone having 231 hrs on Euro Truck Simulator 2

@Sterno Is it a boring game?

I assume it's better than Desert Bus

oh ok
Because if it's good, I don't blame him

user15026
11:00 PM
@Sterno I suspect it might be, but just slightly :P

I have 4014 hours on Geometry Dash on PC/Steam alone

@Sterno I think it means you should buy it

My most played game is Pathfinder: Kingmaker at 340 hours
That's with 2 partial playthroughs followed by a full playthrough, and probably a few times I accidentally left it running overnight

Mine is just because I was too addicted

TOME is 103 hours. I should play that again

11:04 PM
What is TOME about?

It's a roguelike
More on the hardcore side

Cool
Oh hey, you have Vault Boy as your profile photo

I have 26 hours on a game called Yesterday, which doesn't look even remotely familiar to me

Are you viewing the hours through Steam?

user15026
@Sterno left it running for Steam cards maybe?

11:06 PM
Nah, I'm too lazy to do anything with the Steam cards I already have
@MilkyWay90 yeah

Same here
72 hrs on Don't Starve Together
233 hrs on Town of Salem
4014 hrs on Geometry Dash
That's cool to know
Is there any way to find the hrs on iOS iPads?
So I can add it to my Geometry Dash total?
Also, any Town of Salem players here?

@Wipqozn ^^
I'd post that mocking laugh gif but when I googled it and it let me back to Arqade, the image link was dead

Btw my Steam username is ItsMilkyWay90 since there already is a MilkyWay90

@Sterno At least I finally have more hours in elite than bad rats
@Sterno I've been thinking about playing DCSS again

I'll just have to link the whole video

11:17 PM
Since we're linking screenshots of hours

@Sterno Acceptable

Seriously though, I can't find that gif
Every time I find a link that I think will work, it's either dead or behind a spam/scam site

lol

I have it bookmarked, but I'm not on my pc.

I think Town of Salem will become the new Geometry Dash for me

11:19 PM
I bet @GnomeSlice has it handy

@GnomeSlice We need your help to get the gif

dly
is there a way to rank all games by activity and not just recently played ones?

All is right in the world again
@MilkyWay90 I was really just mocking @Wipqozn for playing Bad Rats
Even if it cost me like $60 to make him do it

dly
nvm found it

11:21 PM
oh lol

You can't search for Bad Rats without filtering for "bad"!

dly
2400 hours of CS:S.. thats not even close to what I've actually played it
