That's probably just caching
user15026
@Brian if you changed it on your parent site it will eventually change here, it just caches for a bit
Cash Caching is the root of all the world's problems.
There are only two hard problems in computer science: cache invalidation and naming things. And race conditions. And off-by-one errors.
@murgatroid99 The Flukemarm is a ridiculous boss. Just throwing that out there.
@Fluttershy The difficulty swings a lot depending on how upgraded your nail is and on your charm setup
Also, it's pretty easy to cheese if you know how
00:08
@murgatroid99 If you mean the Desolate Dive, they patched that out. :P
Also, I think I'm just here too early. I ended up there right after Soul Master and Mantis Lords. I think I'm supposed to go to Crystal Peaks first.
@Fluttershy There's actually another one. It's not as cheesy, but it does make the fight a lot easier
@Fluttershy And yes, I would not fight it yet
It's actually optional, and the reward isn't great
@murgatroid99 Oh. Well damn.
I would definitely recommend going to Crystal Peak next
Onward to Crystal Peak, then! After I get my geo back from my shade. :(
Did you fight the Dung Defender yet? He's the main boss of the waterways
If not, I would recommend fighting him after Crystal Peak
00:12
Hollow Knight is sogood
Oh, also, before going to Crystal Peak, I would recommend getting the Lumafly Lantern from Sly. It costs 1800 geo
@Wipqozn At some point in the near future, I'm going to try streaming a Steel Soul run
@Fluttershy That boss is actually super easy if you completely miss him until you get close to the end game and are all buffed up
@murgatroid99 I haven't fought him yet, no.
Going through trying to collect stuff later on really blew my mind, since I missed so much stuff
Great game
@murgatroid99 Any tips on quick money earning?
00:14
@Fluttershy Sell stuff to the relic shop guy in the City of Tears
I think he's actually just above the City's entrance to the waterways
@murgatroid99 Is that the only point for those items? They aren't needed elsewhere?
@Fluttershy Yeah they just exist to sell
@Fluttershy The only use is to sell them
Oh, okay.
I'm wondering if I shouldn't just go to Jiji to get my shade back instead of fighting the BS monsters in the Waterways...
Also, you can make a bunch of money from saving grubs when you go back to the grub father in the forgotten crossroads
00:17
@Fluttershy protip: never die and you don't need to worry about shades
@murgatroid99 yeah grubfather is a great way to earn money if you've got grubs to turn in
@murgatroid99 I've missed so many of those... I have 5.
@Fluttershy My word
@Wipqozn One of the benefits of playing Steel Soul mode
@Wipqozn Yeah...
@Fluttershy WELL THEN. How many Nail Upgrades do you have?
00:22
@Wipqozn It would be tough for him to have more than one after just Greenpath, Fungal Wastes, and the City of Tears
@Wipqozn Just one.
@Fluttershy Okay, that's what I thought
but was curious
It actually bothers me a little that I can't just remember where all 6 Pale Ore are
Oh, that's why. I couldn't remember whether you get one from the Grubfather or the Seer, because you actually get one from each of them
twitch seems to be acting up something fierce
The Playstation Store is down, too. :(
00:28
well ther we go
starcraft hd launched today,so wanted to watch some videos
oh it's only $15
I was expecting it to be $40 or something equally goofy
they are trying to compete with west of loathing
Probably
WELL I'M OFF
Good night bridge, books be a calling
@GodEmperorDune don't stop pugging
user20683
I'm not surprised it's 15 bucks
NEVER STOP PUGGING
user20683
that's in line with a fair number of older rereleases
00:31
@WorldEngineer I think $15 is a fair price, I just expected it to be overpriced.
@Fluttershy good luck with hollow knioght
@Wipqozn Thanks!
@Wipqozn ok but you should still play west of loathing, only $11
ugh i shouldn't have taken all those nex mex skills, the penalties really fuct my character
user20683
@Wipqozn I generally find most of Blizzard's pricing to be fairly reasonable
Isn't it past @Wipqozn's bedtime?
user20683
@TimStone he just said he was going
00:35
Ah ha
Today has been kind of a blur, I wanted to make sure I was still rooted in reality
I forgot my eReader in my car
To go get it I'd need to put on a shirt and pants
This is misery
I think I'll just watch TNG instead
user20683

A: Dwarf Fortress starting during apt-get upgrade

Aleksi TorhamoWith a question as weird as this, it's of course impossible to say for sure -- but I'll eat my hat if my first hunch isn't correct. :) The only way I can think of, how such unrelated things could be linked is this: After installing (well, extracting) Dwarf Fortress, instead of going to the direc...

Pffffft
ugh I took a nap as soon as I got home from work, slept for 2 hours and everything feels weird
like is it tomorrow?
00:44
I hate when that happens
@BlueBarren Good morning!
(It really is morning here)
@PrivatePansy pics or it didn't happen
@murgatroid99 Check the newest question on The Workplace.
00:57
@PrivatePansy It's funny that I know what episode that is just from the screencap
I wonder what percentage of MLP screenshots that is true of
That one is pretty obvious
I thought of that specific scene when I went looking for a screenshot
It kind of helps that the song is called 'Morning in Ponyville'
I haven't actually watched that episode in a while, but my music library has a song that's just all of the songs from it concatenated together, and listening to it is basically the same as watching the episode

Q: Radeon Pack Bundle - Wolfenstein 2 and Prey Code Delivery Method

VyndicuI already have one of the game that comes with this bundle. Prey. I was wondering does the amd promotion give you a steam code to use? Or is it a single code and will not give you a free gift to use? For reference this is pack I am talking about. http://www.pcworld.com/article/3215127/component...

That's the last episode in which Twilight didn't have wings, and there have been more episodes after it than there were before it

rekt, eh
user15026
@Wipqozn is it a good enough book for that?
user15026
@Yuuki boo
Holy shit. Someone claims to have proven P != NP. https://arxiv.org/abs/1708.03486
@Unionhawk Keep in mind that that happens all the time
Probably
01:10
> While the P versus NP problem is generally considered unsolved, many amateur and some professional researchers have claimed solutions. Gerhard J. Woeginger has a comprehensive list. As of 2016, this list contained 62 purported proofs of P = NP and 50 of P ≠ NP.
And as far as I can recall, P != NP isn't the groundbreaking conclusion, it's suspected to be true.
P = NP has more far reaching implications.
Well, yes, but only one of them is true
And the point is that we don't know for sure until someone proves it one way or the other
A proof either way would be very important because then we'd know for sure, and a lot of things based on the assumption that P!=NP get much more solid theoretical foundations
user15026
I still don't even really understand that at all
Plus, it's one of the Millennium Prize Problems, so anyone who proves it either way would get $1 million
@Ash i believe that if one of the ways is proven, it messes up all known cryptography because prime factorization isn't as good as we thought it was
unfortunately i don't remember if that is from p=np or p!=np
01:16
@Ash Basically, you consider a specific class of computational problems, and ask whether it's (in a broad sense) as easy to solve the problem as it is to verify a solution. It turns out that the specific set of problems corresponds to a significant number of real-world problems, such as scheduling multi-stop delivery routes (the Traveling Salesman problem)
@GodEmperorDune Actually, prime factorization isn't in NP, so that's not relevant to this
@murgatroid99 yay, thanks
@GodEmperorDune Oh, sorry, that's not exactly right. It's in NP, but it's not known to be in NP-Complete
I don't know what the implication of that is in relation to P vs NP
And actually, most cryptography would be broken by a constructive proof of P=NP
user15026
I kiiiinda get that a little. Maybe I will see if there is a simple English Wikipedia article sometimes those help me
@Ash Unfortunately, like the other Millenium Prize Problems, just understanding the problem statement requires significant background in the relevant field
@murgatroid99 but not because of prime factorization?
01:22
@GodEmperorDune I'm not sure
user15026
@murgatroid99 yeah this one just comes up a lot so I want to try to at least understand a little
@murgatroid99 I don't think it's that hard to explain. You can ELI5 it, though it won't be rigorous
@PrivatePansy My statement above is probably the closest I can get to a non-technical explanation of the problem
user15026
@PrivatePansy I will take an ELI5 if you got it
i love how WoL is not quite sure how to spell sarsaparilla
so it does all the ways
01:34
@Ash First, "problem" has a specific meaning in computer science: it's basically a description of the expected input and output in general terms. For example, the integer factorization problem was mentioned above. In that case, the input is a number, and the output is a list of prime numbers that when multiplied together give you the input number.
A common task in computer science involves finding an algorithm that solves a problem in general.
These algorithms have a property called "computational complexity". This is basically the number of steps the algorithm takes to solve a problem, depending on the size of the input.
In the case of integer factorization, you would consider how many steps an algorithm takes depending on the number of digits in the input number
Then, the problem as a whole is considered to have a complexity based on the complexity of the algorithm that takes the fewest steps for large inputs
Now, one other thing to consider is that many problems, like the integer factorization problem, have a corresponding "verification" problem, which is the question: is this output a valid output for this input?
So, in the case of integer factorization, the input is a number and a list of prime factors, and the output is the yes/no answer to the question "Does this list of prime factors multiply to get this number?"
The P vs NP problem is the question "For a specific class of problems, is the computational complexity of the problem in some way close to the computational complexity of its corresponding verification program?"
i wish @murgatroid99 taught my algorithm class
It turns out that if the answer is "yes", and P=NP, then a significant number of problems that matter in the real world are a lot easier to compute solutions for than we thought
As much as I don't care about the Halo universe in general, the Halo 1 theme was amazing. It just got stuck in my head out of nowhere and I don't even mind.
01:47
@GodEmperorDune it's easier to explain when you get to skip all of the nitty gritty details
@murgatroid99 we spent so damn long on the halting problem
@GodEmperorDune it's important
@GodEmperorDune Were you worried for a while it would never end?
@TimStone hue
one could say that you halted on the problem
01:51
@murgatroid99 sure, but it seems like a thought problem that compsci professors love to geek out on
It's the fundamental reason that some things just can't be computed, even if you can describe them to a computer
@GodEmperorDune I wound up not getting as much out of the halting problem lesson as I should have because the class wasn't taking the teacher seriously because of his overall demeanor as he taught it.
Never have I ever spent so much time making sure clicking on a <input type=checkbox> causes the checkbox to toggle
Two days with React. Yay!
damn
@murgatroid99 despite going over it for like 6 lectures that never came up
01:57
@GodEmperorDune for example, the Collatz conjecture is reducible to the halting problem, so it cannot be solved with a computer
@PrivatePansy took me multiple days for a check box column on an infragistics grid because yay old stuff
it was like "let's do X.... lololol its the halting problem" next time "let's do y.... lololol it's the halting problem"
(you have to implement a click event on the grid and look at the cell underneath the cursor because aaa)
@GodEmperorDune that is basically what I was saying
The problem like I said yesterday is that React wants immutability, but JS is not
02:00
@murgatroid99 i suppose you put it in a cleaner way
The code from yesterday was for this - updating a nested list of checkboxes
why are you using checkboxes where you should be using a radio button?
@GodEmperorDune It's for filters, so we OR each item in group, and AND each group to get the query we want
@GodEmperorDune The UI will be updated. Checkboxes are the easiest way to get a toggle in HTML
The problem is with React's setState
02:05

> Nashville is also home to another statue of Forrest that has been described as “terrifying,” with eyes that glow “like a flesh-eating zombie on bath salts,” as a Washington Post reporter once wrote. Despite efforts to remove it, the statue still stands.
hue
the statue is actually pretty weird
user15026
@murgatroid99 that explanation helped some thank you
@Ash great. If you still have any questions I can probably answer them
user15026
So basically if figuring out a thing is equal to checking a thing? Is that too simple?
user15026
(for very complicated values of thing)
02:37
@Ash Actually, yes. I misread what you said at first. I would say it as "Is figuring out a thing about as easy as checking that thing?"
user15026
@murgatroid99 yeah, okay. But it is for large things like... Oh I can't think of exact examples
@Ash One of my favorite examples of this is the Traveling Salesman problem. Basically, you have a list of locations, and the travel time from each one to each other one. And you want to find the fastest path that visits every location and goes back to the start.
@murgatroid99 how could you verify that the path you got from your algorithm is the fastest without calculating all possible paths?
user15026
@murgatroid99 that sounds tricky but it's something we have to figure out a lot for like buses and things yeah?
user15026
But I can see how checking that our solution is best might take a long time
02:46
@GodEmperorDune I don't know how, but I know it's possible
@Ash not as much buses but like a truck making deliveries
user15026
@GodEmperorDune oh yeah that makes sense
Knapsack problem is another classic
@Ash in fact, checking the route is easier than it looks, but finding it is hard, and we generally make do with routes that are just good enough
And if P=NP, then there's actually a much easier way to find the best route than we know of
It's very easy to get a price y from items n
02:51
@GodEmperorDune IIRC TSP is formally defined as checking if there exists a route cheaper than some value x
It's hard to pick items n given price y
So verifying that is cheap - just go through the route and check the cost
@Unionhawk that may be a better example where it's obvious that the verification is easy
@PrivatePansy ah, got it
user15026
@Unionhawk knapsack problem?
03:01
@Ash basically the xkcd above
@Ash Given an infinite amount of items of various items, each with a certain value, how do you fill up a box such that its contents has the highest value
user15026
Okay, this is making more and more sense! I knew I understood it before because I knew @WorldEngineer explained it once and he is a very good explainer of things but sometimes my brain can't hold everything and stuff falls out or leaks through

@Ash if P != NP, there exists is an entire class of problems that cannot be solved through glorified brute force. The fact we couldn't find any such solution (finding just one would be enough to prove that P = NP) means that P != NP certainly wouldn't come as a surprise to anyone
it also means that people will be more ready to accept a "proof" even if it had a hole in it
so I'd advise healthy skepticism
P is any problem that can be solved in 'polynomial' time, e.g. you can count a list of items of length n in n steps, you can sort it using Bubblesort in n^2 time, etc. Any algorithm that is solvable in n^x time, for any x, is in P.
Problems in NP are a little harder to define in simple terms, but they're characterised by being mappable onto one another.
3-colouring a map is a classic (the classic?) NP problem, i.e. working out how to colour the tiles of a map with three colours so that no adjacent map tiles have the same colour.
All other algorithms in NP have been shown to be equivalent to this one.
So if you can find a polynomial-time solution to three-colouring a map, or to any other NP problem, you essentially find a polynomial time solution to them all
But nobody has, and we're pretty sure there isn't one, but we're not mathematically sure.

from the Idea Factory International email i got
11:39
There Was An Attempt
@Memor-X What is it, ARPG?
@DanmakuGrazer from my understanding an Offline MMORPG similar to .hack and SAO but from what i recall Cyberdimension Neptunia also include the ability to replace the AI players with real ones for on-line co-op
the premise of the story is set in the MMORPG Vert plays so it's a Game within a Game
though not sure if it'll be like .hack where you have access to the desktop the game is installed into
@Wipqozn no, it's already deleted
11:54
@MadScientist Disregarding the top retweet, did Trump really retweet a tweet about a rumour about something he might be doing?
Who does that?

@Memor-X offline mmorpg is the setting but it should be an arpg thingadongdong for some value of arpg
@badp assuming the A in that is Action (as opposed to Augmented) then probably but i haven't seen the battle system myself
if you've played or seen .hack or SAO then that's kinda what i am expecting
I haven't
.hack is not very ARPG
It's very much MMORPG
For people who love collecting bear asses but can't stand doing it with other people.
@DanmakuGrazer if you mean Action Role Playing Game not sure how to distinguish it from other RPGs
Something like..
Batman games
12 years and still waiting for a sequel to Eternal Ring...
@DanmakuGrazer the Arkem ones?
12:20
@DanmakuGrazer hmmm, never played them myself (yet) but i never thought of them as RPGs. if there is leveling up and skill points i'd say it had RPG Elements like how Warcraft 3 and LoL have them
i don't know, maybe i just don't know the Batman Games well enough
Heck, think of Skyrim
As opposed to the more MMO way of doing things
Attacking primarily through skills, animations don't really matter, long casting times
@Unionhawk Nice idea, but KS does not seem like the right platform for this
12:27
@DanmakuGrazer that sounds like SAO but swap long casting times to long cooldown times for skills
@Unionhawk how is that even a thing that works
Exactly
But I thought 4Goddesses was going to be more ARPG
@badp As in how do round ups work?
You give it your bank login and it watches the transaction history
eeeeeeeeeeeeek
I'll just make be making yearly dumps
12:33
@DanmakuGrazer well i haven't seen the battle system in action yet (keeping it as much of a surprise to discover) but in my mind and what i read about the co-op i was thinking of more Final Fantasy XII with you setting up conditions for skills to be used by you're allies (since i doubt they'd stick Co-Op in the same system used by Re;Birth)
I'm thinking it'd be closer to NepU but with an action bar for some reason?
some of us will certainly be disappointed!
though looking at the screenshots i get more of an SAO feel now but my only experience so far as been Hollow Fragment
> Clarke, who has begun his fourth re-watch of Sakura Trick
Nep U was more fun than it had any right to be
@badp haven't got around to playing that one but from what i thought it was going to a horde hack and slash like Dynasty Warriros but with Senran Kagura "loose clothing as you get hurt" thing
12:36
@Memor-X that's NepU
I think
except the clothes thing is purely cosmetic in NepU iirc
@PrivatePansy lol, i would have that problem if it wasn't for the fact that i know how to filter Yuri on Ice
mainly, i search for Shoujo Ai/Yuri based on series and couples
random stuff i get from themed sites like Yuri-ism and Dynasty Scans
if Yuri on Ice shows up there, then i can expect "Cute Girls during Cute Lovey Dovey things to one another"
@badp figured as much, the promo images showed Ram and Rom almost naked from damage and Lady Blanc getting pissed off (as she has the right to be, those who perverse the White Sisters shall suffer the wrath of Lowee)
(heavy sigh)
besides that's actually not possible since you only have one character on the field (with one backup)
@badp but i figure people will find a weak mob, get beaten to an inch of their life, kill everything then checking the "damage"
after all, how many people used the Self Destruct just to remove 2B's skirt
The young intern who accidentally did a Retweet apologizes.
mother of god there really is an old trump tweet for all occasions
@Memor-X I know this is Nier: Automata (It is, right?), but my brain cannot stop thinking of Self Destruct as a Pokemon move. Specifically a Voltorb move
12:49
@Unionhawk XKCD Law but it's Trump
Even though there are other Pokemon that has the same move
@PrivatePansy your right it is Nier: Automata
@PrivatePansy TECHNICALLY, that's Self-Destruct
@DanmakuGrazer In Pokemon it's spelt as one word I think
when i played i never used the self-destruct except for when i hacked machines and it wasn't until i asked a question on the dress module did i learn about it (and before then i didn't know 2B had such a function)
12:50
Oh, prior to X and Y. Finally using the power of the 3DS for some good!
My copy of Kimi no na Wa will be in tomorrowwwwwww!
@Fluttershy that's Your Name right?
@Memor-X Yeah!
@Memor-X I'm just saying that's probably a valid and helpful tactic in the relevant SK game probably
@Fluttershy ahhh nice. it's on my list with all the other anime i want to buy
12:53
@badp What's not actually possible?
@Unionhawk what's this about?
clicking on the arrow to know what you replied to because chrome doesn't like to scroll chat any more
that's what's not actually possible
@DanmakuGrazer the part where you have two characters taking damage at the same time and a third as backup?
@BlueBarren this one is from 2015 so idk
but see the reply for the recent refrance
It turns out that our president, or someone with access to his account, may be a gigantic dumbass
@Unionhawk turns out? I thought this was already known

it's an ongoing and developing story
@DanmakuGrazer it's a much shorter distance from the combat scenes you see in the anime than the main games can boast anyway
...or some of the game plot encounters anyway
"oh no it's a huge swarm of monsters"
(battle begins vs three random garbage mobs with 10× the hitpoints)
that's not what a swarm is what
pls
Did someone say swarm?
4
unless you define a swarm as a collection of more than one enemy
therefore 3 might be considered huge
I can think of at least 3 Final Fantasy games where you're surrounded by 15+ enemies and then fight only 3-4 at a time.

> Welcome back! While you were away for 3 years
@Arperum I was hoping to re-hook one person who had played it in the past with this one.
Everyone who likes incrementals has played or should play swarmsim.
@Beedrill more recent games in the nep series can pit you against like 7 maybe
whereas nepu has a mission where you go through a mob of 1,000 in groups of 50 or so
which I mean is not necessarily the definition of "fun"
but
looking at the breakdown of my car insurance ok, that's not bad overall
My MVR must be clear because otherwise there's no way I'd be paying ballpark what my parents pay for liability
that's pretty nice
$700 for coll is oof though
@Beedrill Dammit you

Pff... I'm just sitting here waiting for AoM to unlock...

@Beedrill this has now massive performance issues
@badp Really? I haven't had any trouble with it.
it's lagging all over the place
No issues here.
