@Sterno Class diversity and capability is wider. In 4E, each class has different capabilities, but the structure itself is identical. In 3.5E (and as well 3E), structures for each class (especially non-spellcasting) are more diverse.
It gives a bit more freedom to certain aspects, which in term amps up the complication factor.
I like the older versions not because the rules as written are superior, but because there's a much greater attitude (and ability) to house rule what you want. Everything is pretty modular. Playing with players who really only play 3.5E and 4E, I always hear them say "Where in the book does it say you can do that?"
@RavenDreamer Yeah, at high levels, it certainly seemed that way. Probably true in older editions as well, though in older editions, you usually didn't survive to higher levels.
@RavenDreamer In the last 3.5E campaign I ran, the party's spellcaster was one-shot by a melee fighter.
Granted, this was a fighter specialized in charging, with enough feats and equipment (plus a lucky crit) that, well, everything played out perfectly for the cinematics of that one single hit.
@GraceNote, may I query your vast meta-knowledge? is there a policy about "answering" a disallowed/closed question via a comment? as in, "this is generally not an allowed question type, but I happen to know X?"
@agent86 There is no policy, but there are two general perspectives on it.
Either, "You're encouraging people to still get answers here despite the part where the stuff isn't allowed", versus "We are here to help, we can still lend a hand."

@OrigamiRobot You should feel open to use as many S as you see the need for. The limits we impose on it are fairly arbitrary as to when they are being applied. Also very short-time-lived so to speak.
