guys, does anyone know why a router would detect a computer being connected through ethernet cable, but not give it IP, even if it's set to static in the windows settings?
cc: @Ash
you can see there's a PC connected on port 3 (on top part of the screenshot), but there's no connection (on bottom part)
I've tried re-enabling the ethernet adapter, I've tried ipconfig /flushdns, as well as /renew, I've tried setting IP to static or set by DHCP

> The 169.254.x.x range of IP addresses is reserved by Microsoft for private network addressing. If you have a pc set to automatically obtain an IP and you recieve one of these addresses, windows has assigned this because it cannot find a DHCP server within the network subnet.
so, apparently my other PC can't find the DHCP server? great...
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is a set of networking protocols that permits networked devices, such as personal computers, printers, Internet gateways, Wi-Fi access points and mobile devices to seamlessly discover each other's presence on the network and establish functional network services for data sharing, communications, and entertainment. UPnP is intended primarily for residential networks without enterprise-class devices.
The UPnP technology was promoted by the UPnP Forum, a computer industry initiative to enable simple and robust connectivity to stand-alone devices and personal computers...
I always thought of usb stuff when I saw UPnP, but now that I'm actually thinking about it, I realize that's Plug and Play, not Universal Plug and Play...
@MBraedley well, I mean, I have it set to find IP automatically, but it gives me a 169.254.x.x IP, which apparently means windows couldn't find the DHCP server
so I'm not sure if the issue is on the PC or the router..
In a computer network, a link-local address is a network address that is valid only for communications within the network segment (link) or the broadcast domain that the host is connected to.
Link-local addresses are not guaranteed to be unique beyond a single network segment. Routers therefore do not forward packets with link-local addresses.
For protocols that have only link-local addresses, such as Ethernet, hardware addresses assigned by manufacturers in networking elements are unique, consisting of a vendor identification and a serial identifier.
Link-local addresses for IPv4 are defined in...
the cable can't be completely crap, because when I unplug it from router, it says cable unplugged in windows and when I plug it back it, it identifies for a bit and then says unidentified network
A week and a half ago, I started having an odd problem: with my main desktop connected to my gigabit switch, my internet connection would go dead, not just for my desktop, but for all of my devices. My first instinct was that it was my actual internet connection, and so I had my ISP replace my m...
I used to play "Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012" that have a play mode called "free-for-all" were you could battle with 3 or 4 players in all against all.
Lately I've tried the new "Magic Duels" but it only has 1v2 and 2 headed giant (2v2).
I'm not familiarized with the o...
May a former U.S. president be part of a successor's government? More specifically, may Hillary Clinton make Barack Obama a minister in her government?
Are there even any historic precedents for such a move?
I've always wondered what would happen if a former President decided to run for a House of Representatives seat, and then was somehow elevated to Speaker. What would the over/under be on the President and VP in office at the time meeting unfortunate accidents?
If I make an Eevee my buddy and after walking 2km I then decide to evolve the Eevee, will the 2km of walking we've done together be retained or will it reset?
I've had a rough day at work and I really could do without this bullshit
He's also surely worked hard all day
and I don't have a pager to answer to
but then I have to listen to him explain to me how his life is too easy and whenever he likes he can just go fuck off for three weeks to some island in Greece.
Today I decided to test the accuracy of the buddy system to record the distance traveled compared to the registry of the distance to hatch the eggs and I was a little disappointed with the result.
I put a 2km egg in the incubator and I selected the Magikarp as buddy before leaving on walk.
