Aghk, I'm running around in FFXIV and some person randomly messages me and asks me if I'm new to the game or just on a new character. I say new to the game, we chat a bit, he (character's male so just going by that) sends me a friend request ingame and I'm like sure, whatevs. He then asks if I have skype to voice chat. o_O I say sorry, I only do that with people I know, and he's like "Well I guess we already friend, but I guess we could know each other more?" and I don't know what to say, agh.

I find it very strange; I roll almost exclusively female characters in MMO's, and I don't think I've ever dealt with these sorts of situations.

@Frank That may be true, but as soon as dudes of a particular persuasion sniff out what they figure is a female, they can be total shit nuggets. I stay away from MMOs for a variety of reasons, this being one of them.

@AshleyNunn I don't doubt it. The general demographic that MMOs draw tend to be those whose social skills and maturity levels are not up to snuff. And males are, in general, idiots.

@FAE There's a lot of filler quests, and you're forced to do it. Also, I like playing a healer, not a DPS. Everything is locked behind the questline. I hate it. I want to be able to play how I want, and do the content when I want, but I can't. I'm required to do the long and boring main questline.

I like to invest in a single character, and this lets me do so and not limit myself.

@Wipqozn If you're calling the main questline boring, I dunno what to tell you.

@Frank I had like 30 odd alts in CoX when it shut down, haha, so this is a shift for me.

that's one thing GW2 did really, really well. I can do what I want when I want. Nothing is locked behind some main quest line.

@Frank Some of the questlines which actually advance things are fine, but there's so much filler crap in-between. I'd much prefer it if they just did it like the class questlines: you get a new quest every 5 levels (or so) which advances the story.

There was no rush to do so.

@FAE That's a large part of it, but it's also how much of a chore it is to do it. The questline isn't so bad pre-20, but after that it just gets filled with so many boring fetch quest.

@FAE I actually like the crafting system. It's a bit simplistic for my tastes, but overall, pretty darn good.

@Wipqozn Well, to be fair, a lot of the sidequests are "Get X of Y" too.

@Frank Except there is a rush, because everything is locked behind it. Want to do the newest dungeon? You can't. You need to advance the main quest line.

@Frank Yeah, I like it a lot too! I agree it's a bit simplistic, the "push your luck" aspect of it is pretty interesting though.

@Frank How much more complex does it get, anyway? I only had enough patience to grind it to 15ish, I think. Following the same pattern over and over and over again wasn't doing it for me.

FF14 has the best crafting system of any MMO I've played. I love it.

@FAE It gets more in-depth later, but overall, you bounce between quality and progress.

@Pvt.Grichmann Once you progress far enough down one crafting line, it opens up into working on quality, and adding mood.

Incidentally, in TF2, the game will randomly refer to the Pyro as "he" or "she" in its loading screen tips.

Just give me a new quest every few levels which advances the story, instead of a bunch of quests per level which are just "run to this person, go kill this monster before I help you, oh I don't know anything, go help this person" et cetera.

@Frank My main issues with it so far are oh god, so many menus. So. Many. Menus.

@Frank I don't object to the information, but it's not streamlined very well, UI-wise.

Maybe I wil take my friend up on his offer. Get my monthly sub renewed, and tell him to go nuts.

Then when I get back to playing I can just focus on doing dungeons. Scholar is so much fun.

@FAE That, I wouldn't know. I don't mind massive spreadsheets of data, so UI tends to be lost on me.

I couldn't decide whether I wanted to go for Summoner or Dragoon first, probably going Dragoon.

@Chippies A lot of shooters did 1 gender to avoid hitbox issues (even if the hitbox is the same the models still look different, thus throwing people off because thats what they aim for). TF2 is stylized enough they probably couldve gotten away with genders, but they probably just wanted to avoid the hassle.

@Rapitor Also, TF2 has a lot of voicework...

Gears of War was a huge problem in this regard. the males were titans and the females were a bit tiny, but they had the same exact hitbox.

@Frank One of the tipping points for me getting this game may or may not have been the fact that I can apparently have a purple chocobo. And there's customizable housing.

once my friends and I got a mailbox set up we started to use mail a lot more in order to send each other stuff.

@Frank I kind of want 2 combat classes in the end though, and they both take different types. x_x Plus I could see Culinarian being handy if I want to fish a lot, but they also don't make any components that benefit the other classes very well (like how Blacksmith makes bronze ingots for Armorers kind of synergy).

@FAE Culinarian is a good generic one, as all classes benefit from food buffs.

Rogue/Ninja's releasing soonish (with 2.4) and I would likely find that interesting as well.

@FAE Dragoon wears heavy armor and wields lances, so blacksmith/armorer make for good synergy.

Summoner uses books, which is alchemist, but primarily Weaver works well for that.

@FAE Simple, then! They are your crafter for your Dragoon!

And you can focus on the Botany/Weaver end.

Classes will level faster, the greater the disparity between your highest level and the one you're working on.

@Frank Train Fever isn't free, and I've heard it's currently considered inferior to OpenTTD.

@Pvt.Grichmann Yeah, his video is one of the things I was referencing. The general consensus is that it's good, but that OpenTTD is quite a bit better.

I might give Train Fever alook next year after it's been given more polish and content.

Inventories get flooded with new creatures and besides feeding them to your rares you can sell them for coins. But is there a way i can sell multiple creatures together? Currently i have to manually click a creature, go to manage, sell and accept. Selling 20 creatures this way takes a lot of clic...

Besides, why throw down $40 on something when their is an OpenSource option I haven't played much?

If I played a bunch of OpenTTD I'd probably be more willing to doTrain Fever.
