@Mana +5

I AM THE EYE IN THE SKY

@Mana ever seen LadyHawke?

LOOKING AT YOOOOOUUU
No, actually.

Alan Parsons did the entire movie soundtrack.
And it had MATTHEW BRODERICK.

Nice. What a cool guy.

3:01 PM
You should watch it somewhere. It's actually a really good movie.

@badp Ran that traceroute yet?

Seems like a godawful movie though. I can just imagine the cheesiness coupled with Alan's synths.
Oh, okay.

@ArdaΞ again you're confusing transport layer and application layer

@badp That just means it's a really transparent one.

3:02 PM
because tracert is transport layer, and blocked by the ISP

Just heard about it now.

and proxies are application layer

@GnomeSlice You won't convince them to move there

@Mana Well, read the summary at least.

@badp Do you know what an MITM attack is?

3:02 PM
@Mana Of course not, but I can try.

@ArdaΞ Yes, transport layer.

Oh, I know!

@badp Could easily be link layer.
Which is what I'm suspecting is going on here.

@ArdaΞ When I say transport layer I mean both transport and link, which is reasonable given that you don't ever use TCP or UDP without IP.

The ISP is connecting you to dyson.com through a bunch of machines, probably Level3 at some point as well.

3:03 PM
I'm sorry for not making this clear enough.

@badp And you complain to me about confusing layers.

@ArdaΞ Ever heard of HTTP/TCP? How about TCP/IP?

IP is the internet layer.
Not the link layer.

Perhaps that means fusing link and transport is okay, but fusing transport and application isn't.

@badp Perhaps, but it doesn't.
Any way. A proxy is just a relay, really.
A relay can be set up on any of the layers.

3:05 PM
Okay, so you mean data link, not network layer, I got confused there. Well, my data link protocol is Bluetooth.

@badp Err? I'm not talking about that, unless you believe there's someone sniffing your bluetooth link.

Bluetooth is a data link protocol.

My point is very simple. An internet connection going from point A to point B goes through dozens of servers.

...like Ethernet.

Any of those servers could be inspecting and modifying your packets.

3:07 PM
X-Nokia-BEARER: 3G

Right, that one's added by your phone.

What point along the chain can add this information?

The other one isn't.

23 mins ago, by badp
050,644  test-8| Line 36:Header: X-Network-info: UMTS,,unsecured
This one?

Yes.

3:08 PM
Well, I guess it doesn't have -Nokia- in the header name

I looked it up, it's not a part of the set of headers X-Nokia-BEARER is part of.

Fine, I'm going to get moving.

x-nokia-alias The end users phone number. encrypted.
x-nokia-bearer: i.e. GPRS
x-nokia-connection_mode typically TCPIP
x-nokia-gateway-id: Identifies the wap gateway. Seems similar to the use of the Via header
x-nokia-imsi: Imsi value
x-nokia-ipaddress: Internal IP address
x-nokia-localsocket: Internal IP and a portnumber.
x-nokia-msisdn: The users phone number in plain text.
x-nokia-musicshop-bearer Nokias music shop. Typically "GPRS/3G"
x-nokia-musicshop-version: Nokias music shop. The version.

@GnomeSlice Ohhhhhhhh. It all makes sense now.

@Mana You seem surprised.

@badp Nicely done sir.

@badp Harsh, man! Gnome was just trying to keep things on topic.

Recently The Humble Bundle got another seven games added to the arsenal. Two of these you get just for buying the bundle but another five (formally bundle #2) you get if you pay over the average price. Because of this update, and the fact you’ve only go until Tuesday to pick it up, we thought [...]

Oh wow, foolish me, thinking you'd moved YOUR messages.

3:11 PM
@Mana Man, you don't change the topic by telling people to move elsewhere
Bring a new topic instead

@badp Your job is not done yet, sir. The plebeians continue to defy your authority.

@badp I TRIED.

And you discussed it. We're still discussing ours.
@ArdaΞ While it's no proprietary Nokia header, I still have reason to believe it couldn't have been added by any other hop in the network.

(Newtopic)

@badp What reason?
@GnomeSlice That's not a topic, that's an image.

3:12 PM
Well @GnomeSlice, you might as well remove your star since the context is gone now.

@ArdaΞ What other hop can know about my being on "unsecured UMTS"?

@Mana How did you...
Joy is the best.

@badp Err, the first couple.
All of the ones that are operated by your ISP.

@ArdaΞ Yeah, I guess the other end of the ISP could... technically.

For what it's worth, I recall a proxy being defined as operating on OSI layers 4 - 7 (transport - application). shrugs </involvement>

3:13 PM
@TimStone Thanks.

Also, I just noticed he changed his eye colour in each emotion. Creepy.

@TIM DON'T GO

@TimStone Not what I studied but oh well.

@Mana returns to gaming mindset

:|

3:15 PM
@GnomeSlice Wow, that is creepy. Especially the yellow one.

So, before I go back to "gaming mindset", trying to change the topic by interrupting people with noise is not productive
2

It's a chatroom. Unless there's a topic related to gaming to be discussed, there's nothing wrong with going off-topic.

I guess I took it a bit far, but I didn't really care, I was just trying to be annoying.

Mission accomplished

@GnomeSlice That's my job. :(

3:16 PM
Yeah, well, you know who else was just trying to be annoying?

@ArdaΞ Can I have my vegetable back?

@Mana You?

Hitler, @GnomeSlice. Hitler.

@Mana HITLER?
CALLED IT.

@GnomeSlice Your... vegetable?

3:17 PM
BOOOOOOOOOOM

@ArdaΞ It's probably best we don't ask.

I don't want to know what you meant by that.

hi-fives @GnomeSlice

You...

@TimStone btw are you nominating yourself?

@ArdaΞ ಥ_ಥ

You have quite the memory for these things man. I'm rather impressed.

@badp I think that would be rather silly of me.

Of course I do.

3:18 PM
@Mana That was only a week or two ago.

That's when I learned the meaning of Schadenfreude.

@badp True, but I have two reasons for not doing so. The first being that I'd only feel comfortable nominating if I had spent more time on Gaming, which I'd like to, but I just haven't quite yet. The second is something else.

@GnomeSlice Threw a potion of sleeping at me.

3:20 PM
I find the second reason pretty convincing. Ah well

@badp The second reason is potentially far more relevant than the first.

@TimStone Aye. I see you know already about the process.

@GnomeSlice Why? Not all of are interested in being spammed with the latest freeware games.

I do try to keep myself informed.

@Powerlord They don't actually post THAT frequently.
Or I wouldn't be following them.
Besides, I don't think J.U.L.I.A. will be freeware.

@ArdaΞ Then leave a comment you jerk.

Q: Is "Curiouser" in fact, a word (e.g. in the phrase "curiouser and curiouser...")?

GnomeSliceIs "Curiouser" in fact, a word? (Yes, this question is very short, but that's really all I need to ask.)

@GnomeSlice Non sequitur.

3:33 PM
@ArdaΞ Hah, you thought I wouldn't know what that meant.
But it's the name of a comic strip in my local newspaper.
So I do.
BITCH

@GnomeSlice What does it mean then?

It's a term to describe something of an illogical nature.
Or something.

Wrong.

VIVE LA FRANCE

It means "It does not follow"

3:33 PM
↑ non-sequitur

How is that wrong?

@GnomeSlice It does not follow.

@Arda It is known.

Non sequitur () is Latin for "it does not follow." It is most often used as a noun to describe illogical statements. Non sequitur may refer to: * Non sequitur (literary device), an irrelevant, often humorous comment to a preceding topic or statement. * Non sequitur (logic), a logical fallacy where a stated conclusion is not supported by its premise. * Non Sequitur (comic strip), a comic strip by Wiley Miller * Non Sequitur (Star Trek: Voyager), an episode of Star Trek: Voyager Sequitur may refer to: * Sequitur algorithm
Non sequitur (logic), a logical fallacy where a stated conclusion is not supported by its premise.

(The "it" part is given by the suffix of the verb.)

Whu... why is my location displayed as Earth, TX in my profile?
Is there a town called 'Earth' in Texas?

@GnomeSlice What was it originally?

@badp I have no idea, but probably just 'Earth'

@GnomeSlice I assumed that was a joke you made. I assumed this because it was dumb and didn't make sense.

3:38 PM
@GnomeSlice Actually yes.

@GnomeSlice Yes

> Earth is a town in Lamb County, West Texas, United States.

Conveniently situated among a field of pie charts.

Wait... so... SE figured that I was dumb and didn't know what State I lived in, and added it for me?

I imagine you must then be the possession of @thomasmcdonald

Q: Is there a specific name for a portmanteau of two alternative spellings?

GnomeSliceThis question came about in a discussion between myself and another user of the Gaming.SE chat after I linked in this chiptune track called An Eskimeau Experience Here is the gist of the discussion: It's either Eskimo or Esquimaux. Not a portmanteau of both. "Eskimeau" is a portmanteau...

> That's like calling something a biscookie.
Cookies are called "biscotto" here!

@badp Take it up with @Arda

We like our cookies well cooked.

6^ Maybe a spellmanteau? – F'x Feb 17 at 13:45
+1 for Word Cocktail

A: Is there a specific name for a portmanteau of two alternative spellings?

Robusto 初夢I think you should probably just call it a portmanto or a portmanteaux.

Hahahaha.

@badp Then biscookie is both Franglais and Engtalian.

3:43 PM
I wonder which answer I should accept.
The top two answers are both very good, but defy one another.

@GnomeSlice Compile both of them into one answer by you and then accept it.

@Mana Then it would be a self-deprecating answer.

All the better. I love self-deprecation. Especially when it involves you.

Also, why the heck does this guy have a crazy symbol after his username?

@GnomeSlice That's a long story.

3:45 PM
@ArdaΞ Nevermind then.

Ask your new community.

Seriously though, which answer should I accept here?

Oh wait, that's KAOS.

There's probably a more technical reason explaining why but until one's provided to correct me here I'm happy to be satisfied with that reasoning.

@Mana I could always call myself Aρδα Ξ.

@Arda and I could call myself M¯\(ºдಠ)/¯a

No you couldn't.

I recall Jeff posting it somewhere.
