17:00
@LessPop_MoreFizz You haven't read all of the questions on gaming then. I've seen plenty that don't really have coherent English
@CharlesBoyung Link 'em so we can improve them.
We have edit rights for a reason.
And I've seen plenty of questions on GameFAQs that are perfectly fine too.
Another perk of our license, incidentally.
@CharlesBoyung I did say 'for the most part'. Also, what @badp said. There's a community of users here that actively clean up and improve the incoherent posts. Which can't be said for gamefaqs.
@badp same thing with a better layout
wait, stop, there are coherent gamefaqs questions with real answers?
17:01
That's fine, and that was never my point. My point was that badp stated that said sites did not exist, not that they sucked.
have you found the diamond in the rough
ok, well assume he meant the latter
@tzenes the difference is that the "list of posts by the same group of approved users" is the whole point of redvsblue.com
he might just consider sucking the same as not existing
@tzenes - there's plenty out there.
@badp that list isn't a single person...
17:02
not the same can be said about forums.te4.org
ok, so its not the focus
But that's not the point of rvb
Yeah, mine was a point of "focus."
@tzenes - you know what happens when you assume...
the point of rvb is a content creator
I know what happens when I slavishly adhere to rhymes from my childhood too
It was a joke
17:04
@tzenes Blogs usually publish content from the same creator or group thereof. :)
not necessarily
Can I get the link to the source of this debate so I can try and follow along?
there is no stipulation that a blog has to be a consistent group
usually
Actually, that kind of is the definition of a blog.
17:04
7
A: Will gaming.stackexchange.com remove any need for cheat books?

badpGaming doesn't aim to kill anything. There's a void and we're trying to fill it.

This seems like a needlessly heated debate over a relatively minor point. That meta question is sort of ridiculous anyway, since it demands looking into the future for an answer.
ok, well usually men wear pants, and women wear skirts, but that doesn't mean I can't wear a skirt
in fact, you know what
I'm wearing a skirt today
3
brb changing
oh man this is so comfy
you have got to try this
removing my star because of the mental image you just provoked
@tzenes - can you show me a blog where anyone can freely contribute to it? I highly doubt you'll be able to.
Can you show me a concrete definition of a blog?
17:08
@Brant I'll see your -1 star and raise you a pin.
I don't want to violate a definition while I'm at it
@tzenes Who's that "you"?
Oak
Oak
@badp @Charles be aware your discussion in the comments was pruned. I tried to leave the relevant part of the correspondence there. Please don't add any additional comments there.
I meant charles
but if you have one that'll certainly help
@Oak Seen, thanks. I've linked our previous discussion to---- whoops.
Oak
Oak
17:10
@badp I've seen, that's cool
'kay.
I dunno, I think enough people weren't getting good answers on gameFAQs
they went elsewhere
we are an elsewhere
@Brant the tl;dr is that Charles is being particularly angry about his pedantry for some reason.
I say this as someone with a long-abiding penchant for being among the most pedantic individuals you will ever meet. But there's no reason to be angry in the process.
does the world need two different kinds of sugarry carbinated carmel beverages?
probably not, but enough people like Pepsi so we have two
@tzenes Obviously, what will we talk about on the internets otherwise?
17:12
How crazy Steve Jobs is? wait, no that's the same thing
@LessPop_MoreFizz Actually, I'm not angry at all. If I see someone being an idiot, I'm going to call them on it. That simple.
well that seems stupid
oh wait, I'm a hypocrit now
I think saying: we don't need gaming.se because we have gameFAQs is kind of like saying: we don't need MacOS we have Windows
Look up the other words used in it (journal, diary, etc.) if you don't know what those mean.
17:13
@CharlesBoyung Well, given the imperfect tonal qualities of text, you seem very angry. So you may want to revisit your vocabulary in this conversation.
Actually, we don't need MacOS, but that's an entirely different story.
@CharlesBoyung regardless of your actual emotional state, you use a great deal of charged language, and you come off as sounding angry.
@tzenes Other way around! And tbqh, I don't need Windows, I have Mac OS X!
We don't need MacOS as much as we don't need Windows
actually we don't need either
17:14
@LessPop_MoreFizz I wish you had 10k reps so I could annoy you with my useless flagging! :P
Slackware for lyfe
poor badp, you can still annoy me
@tzenes not quite the same.
@badp halfway there!
that annoys the heck out of me
@tzenes taken note.
17:15
gdamnit
I don't think anybody wants to argue with an angry tzenes here.
Oak
Oak
@tzenes agreed
Oak, on the other hand...
bwhahaha, baleted
anyway, my contribution to this conversation is: gameFAQs suck
thats my answer to the meta question
but I don't think that's appropriate to post
17:17
Those logs are google indexed. Jus saying.
well then google sucks
you hear that google, you can take your faux net neutrality and SHOVE IT
I doubt they can 'here it'.
Seeing as here is not a verb.
It would be rather difficult, I'd imagine.
Oak
Oak
Man @tzenes, I think you need a dedicated user to just follow you around and fix your typos
haha
sjohnson did that for a while
they're so bad
@Oak Wait, isn't that what mods are for?!? :P
Oak
Oak
17:19
Probably hard to keep up with the volume of text you write here :)
@LessPop_MoreFizz I didn't follow the Beatles thing all that closely. What exactly was holding back online distribution of their stuff? Fear of making too much money?
what's even worse: English is the only language I speak
@badp No
its not like my second language or anything
Oak
Oak
@badp no that's what 2k users are for, like you :) I'm not sure what we're for, really
17:19
I'm just bad at spelling
bbl checking RPG for spelling, then filling my flag quota.
ooo, I'm off to close game-rec
@LessPop_MoreFizz online for how long? :)
This site has made me (even more) obsessed with editing. I go to blogs and forums and look at documents at work and I think, "man, I need to edit this and that and the other", and then I remember that I only have that power here...
@sjohnston The five major stakeholders didn't see eye to eye about a lot of things and were generally paralyzed into indecision for a long time. Apple Corps is a very very very slow moving entity.
17:21
@badp good luck
@badp Probably a few days
@sjohnston Beyond that, there's also the ongoing saga specifically between Apple Inc. and Apple Corps.
only one more guys, you know you want to
> Tell @tzenes it's "carbonated". Carbinated is going to drive me nuts. Also, sarsparilla out-does Pepsi and Coke any day. This comment will vanish in a minute or so. – Grace Note♦ 7 mins ago
WAAAAA
I just got Grace Noted!
The Apple Corps/Apple Inc. saga is long and storied, but the one-sentence summary is that they were pissed off at each other for a long time.
17:23
and no, I don't mean "bubbly" I mean FROZEN IN CARBONITE!
by the way, I appreciate what you mean, @tzenes
Today's Beatles announcement is basically Steve Jobs standing up and shouting "Yes! Yes! FINALLY! I'M KING OF THE MUSIC WORLD! BAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!"
at the discussion on meta
I have to say, the best part of the Apple official press release is Ringo's quote on the subject: “I am particularly glad to no longer be asked when the Beatles are coming to iTunes,” said Ringo Starr.
17:24
I think its not a bad idea that you have
I'm not sure how the page is constructed
but it seems feasible
@Brant Less Titanic, more Moby Dick. This is his White Whale and he finally got it. He can die in peace now.
Right, exactly.
As I said, someone made the concious decision of making the link go to the API.
That's a much better analogy, actually.
I find it a very weird decision to put it mildly, but there must've been some reasoning for it.
17:25
I think it has to do with how the page is constructed
Page construction is a non-trivial problem
It serves no purpose whatsoever.
that's not entirely true
I know the technology used by SO quite well.
technically that button does link to that data
ASP.NET MVC that is
Well, yes, but the javascript doesn't access the original link, the API address is hardcoded
17:26
it maybe that originally the javascript used the ahref to retrieve the data
I think the problem there is you're mixing out the site's internal API used for ajax with the public API, possibly.
no, both link to the same place
Maybe it was just a temporary side-effect of some shotgun debugging.
Why would the internal API use the URL from the rendered HTML?
that makes no sense whatsoever
they're still using ajax to pull from the same source
17:27
Or stealth SEO!
@tzenes gaming.stackexchange.com/api/ != api.gaming.stackexchange.com/1.0/
Ooh, yeah, totally stealth seo
@tzenes so?
right, but in both cases it pulls from gaming.se.com/api/
@arda that was in reference to badp's comment
You're not going to understand me if you don't understand how ASP.NET MVC works (or any server-side language, really)
17:28
Huh. Curse is taking over the MinecraftWiki and MinecraftForum.
They are growing fast.
the address they render in the HTML, which the buttons link to, has no influence whatsoever on their AJAX etc
so, not only do I know how ASP.NET MVC works, but I work at a company which constructs webpages for a living
@tzenes "WoW Addons WAR Addons Gamer Blogs Forums"?
@ArdaXi MVC isn't a server side language, BTW
they could quite trivially edit that link without affecting the javascript
I would hope so, anyway
@CharlesBoyung ASP.NET MVC is a server-side technology. If you want to get technical, the language is C#, usually.
17:29
You don't know that's true, because you don't know where they're pulling from
MVC isn't a language to begin with
its possible they cannot pull the data from that location
It's a technique: Model, View, Controller. :P
I can be quite sure they're not parsing the HTML to get the API link.
That would be incredibly stupid.
sure, but you can use javascript to access links on a page
17:30
(On the server-side, I mean)
And the Javascript, as you have shown, it's hardcoded.
function loadAnswers(b, a) {
    loadUrl("/api/useranswers.html?pagesize=" + answersPageSize + "&userId=" + userId, "#answers-table", b, a)
}
now, that doesn't mean it always was
we might be just looking at an artifact
Anyway, I know the problem now, I know the work-around. I'm not really interested in helping Jeff with improving user experience any more.
well I am
because I'd like the site where I invest my time to be as good as possible
3
if you don't want to open another question I will
Oak
Oak
@tzenes second time I agree with you today, tzenes, something's strange here
17:33
@ArdaXi I edited the title, feel free to flame
Oak
Oak
I better go before it happens again
@tzenes No longer affects me. This is completely subjective, petty and all that, but the only thing I would achieve by opening a question is helping Jeff. I wouldn't want that. If you want to, that's up to you, of course.
@badp While your edit does improve the title, you are wrong in your intentions. "The API" means the Gaming API, which it does link to.

Q: Easiest way to screenshot an XBox 360, Playstation 3, or Wii Game?

Swingline RageWhat's the easiest way to take a screenshot of an XBox 360 or other console game? Do I really have to buy a video card with HDMI/HDTV support, plug the XBox into that, and do the screen cap on the computer? What about a way to do this within the XBox itself, or by using a 3rd-party piece of "cap...

@ArdaXi What API are you talking about?
api.gaming.stackexchange.com/1.0/ or gaming.stackexchange.com/api/
The latter.
17:38
one is a JSON, documented API -- then it'd be a bug
the other is an HTML, undocumented API -- then it'd be bydesign
Hang on. It's not a bug, it's a feature?
@Brant Goes nicely with Yoko's quote for the official Apple press release:
“In the joyful spirit of Give Peace A Chance, I think it is so appropriate that we are doing this on John’s 70th birthday year,” said Yoko Ono Lennon.
@badp How could sending a user invalid, unstyled HTML be bydesign?
@ArdaXi Yeah, I understand those pages return the bits of HTML that update bits of your page without refreshing your whole page.
It's invalid, unstyled HTML because it's designed to be shoehorned in a valid, styled homepage.
@badp So, sending a user to it is a bug.
17:40
"Replace this div with this other div over here"
Under whatever circumstances.
@ArdaXi Well, yes, linking to it is a bug, but then again JS-disabled browsers are unsupported.
Since JS-enabled browsers don't do that... you're on your own.
@badp How about people with slow connections?
@ArdaXi They'd appreciate it, because you're only loading the bit that changes.
@badp Try right-clicking and Open in New Tab ;-)
@badp They would not load the JS in time ;-)
17:41
@ArdaXi It'd be cached. (I hope.)
@badp It isn't.
Download once, use many.
Hang on, it is. I'm getting 304.
How the hell can it be so slow to load?
@ArdaXi Dialup is slow, man.
@badp To parse the Javascript. Any way, even the latest Chrome has this 'bug'.
17:43
@ArdaXi I can confirm middle click doing that.
So it's not a matter of unsupported browsers, unless Jeff chooses to not support any browser.
I guess it's an effort to half-support unsupported browsers, then.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Wait, you didn't put your SE reputations in your will?
@GamingSE I have a silly question: To my knowledge, we still have an ongoing war about game-rec questions. Who is on what side? I ask this because I didn't follow the course of the war closely as it happened and if we aren't careful we could end up convincing everyone, but not noticing and still thinking there's a war going on, when there's no one left to fight. Okay, Die2Nite is fantastic.
If you character gets a head injury and tries to post on the town forum, it automatically inserts pauses and stutters into your words
