8:00 PM
I'm absolutely positive I've overpaid for plenty of stuff due to that.

@StrixVaria I'm pretty sure I did the math the very first time I bought from them, but after that was like "Meh"
I guess it's time for me to start researching video cards

I don't build my own PCs any more for similar reasons.

So, at work, the sales department today said we should look into setting up the site so users that use adblocker can't view the site. Quite a few folks chimed in saying why this was a bad idea, but sales still seems to want to do it... annnnnndddd we just got a ticket in from acustomer complaining about the site crashing all the time, with a link to a comment section on our site all complaining about the same thing, and pointing out that if they use adblock all the issues go away

I find the research part the most frustrating and time consuming, especially if there is a new hardware line coming out

It's such perfect timing

8:01 PM
@twobugs This is also a step that I would prefer to avoid.

Yeah. I don't keep up on PC hardware.

I guess that's one advantage of working for government... we don't have customers so much as users.

So many people take ATI vs NVIDIA as some blood feud and try to spread misinformation

Mostly now I just go to that site, pick a pre-configured option, tweak it ("I want 16GB RAM instead of 8GB, and a slightly better video card!") and click the buy button

We told them that folks probably use adblock since the ads are breaking the site, and here comes along an email saying exactly that

8:02 PM
@twobugs Well, unless things changed in the past few years, nVidia still has the performance crown.

I want to stick with NVIDIA solely because I'm familiar with their software for configuring things.

About the only thing I research anymore is video cards
NEVER GETTING DUAL CARDS AGAIN

I wonder how well nVidia ShadowPlay works for streaming stuff to Twitch

@Powerlord They typically do, and I suspect it's the same here, but in 2015 they got in pretty big trouble for some card having significantly less memory than advertised

still has nVidia GTX 570s, and ShadowPlay was new with the 600s

8:03 PM
@StrixVaria would it be valid to split that question two different questions? both questions he asked would have fairly lengthy answers

I've heard shadowplay works great, anecdotally

or could

@twobugs nVidia doesn't make their own cards.

Intel X99 vs Intel Z170 = @Sterno says WTF

@Dragonrage It might support 2 questions, but they're so thematically similar that I don't really see an issue with it as 1 either.

8:04 PM
@Powerlord Fair point, I'm trying to remember specifics but I think this had something to do with the chipset?
It could only address like... 75% of the advertised memory maybe?

@twobugs That would be a problem, yes.

Pretty sure I don't need 32GB of RAM

It was some really weird problem that they (nvidia) did a very poor job addressing. They also had some bad performance on DX12 or whatever number we're on now benchmarks

@Sterno Sure you do, it's great.

@Sterno yeah you definitely need 64 GB

8:05 PM
I think they tried to like... bully a company or something? I don't know. There's so much... "embellishment" on the internet it's hard to tell what really happened

@twobugs The GTX970 has 3.5GB of fast RAM, and then 0.5GB of slow RAM. That was pretty deceptive, but it's still a good GPU even after that

@MadScientist why does it have any slow ram at all?

@GodEmperorDune The RAM isn't slower, but it can't address all 4 GB at once and the switching part makes it slow

@MadScientist so it's using 32 bit addresses or something?

well i tried to edit it, but apparently someone submitted an edit while i was attempting to edit it :(

8:11 PM
lol it's running xp

No, it has only 7 out of 8 units active for cost reasons (the GTX980 has everything active), and each of those addresses a part of the RAM. The RAM usually addressed by the inactive unit now needs to be addresses indirectly, which is much slower

they are charlieplexing the ram o_O

One of the things I'm looking forward to with my GTX 970 Strix is Shadowplay
I like the idea of being able to retroactively record

so that's what shadowplay is!

Man, I'd better get a 4k monitor too

8:18 PM
i've heard it hyped but didn't know what it was

@Sterno Soo... basically Darkest Dungeon with aliens?

@Yuuki there is no derailing the xcom2 hype train

Not trying to derail, trying to get a sense of the difficulty curve.

Hmmm
I guess Darkest Dungeon is a TBS
I guess so are most turn based dungeon crawlers
But XCom is a 2.5D perspective move around the board and do your moves tactics kind of game

@GodEmperorDune It has one fewer memory controller

8:22 PM
@GodEmperorDune You can also stream directly to Twitch using ShadowPlay. I wonder how much Twitch paid them for that.

@twobugs I seriously considered getting an R9 390 instead of a GTX 970, but I use Linux alongside Windows, and apparently AMD still doesn't play nice with Ubuntu

@Powerlord less than they would have lost out on by people buying AMD cards!

@Ampt Why? At the time this was introduced, AMD had nothing like it. I'm not sure if they do even now.

@James Well, I was thinking less gameplay mechanics and more gameplay philosophy.

As for the "record something after it happened" bit, Windows 10 directly supports that regardless of the card brand.

8:24 PM
@SaintWacko I bought an 970 even after the whole thing was revealed simply because an AMD card would have required a new power supply for me

@Powerlord I'm sure they do - the PS4 supports streaming to twitch, and that's an AMD GPU

Moving away from "no one gets left behind" to "sacrificial lambs".

@MadScientist I got a really great deal on a 850W power supply, so I shouldn't have to worry about that for a while

@Ampt You're implying that AMD wrote that and not Sony...

Did you see the build I posted earlier?

8:24 PM
The kind of Russian "we have reserves" strategy.

I have a 430W power supply

@Powerlord Could have been both together?
@SaintWacko Running 2x 780Ti's, a waterpump, and an overclocked intel on 850W. I don't think I'll ever need to upgrade.

@Ampt Haha, yeah

Stuff is just getting so much more efficient that I think we've peaked on the power consumption scale and are actually moving back down it.

@Ampt Here's what I'm building now.

8:28 PM
@SaintWacko Very nice. 970 is a beast card

@SaintWacko I'd go for 16GB RAM

@Ampt I'm looking forward to it. Especially considering that it'll be replacing my Sager NP8180 with a 560M

@SaintWacko you got @strix to be your video card?

@MadScientist I'll be picking up more in the future
I wanted to put the money toward things that are harder to upgrade
@GodEmperorDune I did. It was quite difficult

The PSU is overkill, depending on what you can get I'd maybe look for a slightly smaller but more efficient one.

8:30 PM
@MadScientist Agreed - get a better brand too

@MadScientist Yeah, it definitely is, but I got a great price on it
Plus, I was having trouble finding out how small of one I could get

I tend to not skimp on PSU's - they provide clean power to all of your stuff, helping it last longer. A better made 650 will beat out an 850 all day.

I'm not sure about the SSD, but in general I'd recommend a Samsung EVo 850 or a Crucial BX100 (if you can still get one, the successor is crap).

@MadScientist That's another thing I'm getting really cheap right now, will probably upgrade to a really nice one in the future

Kingston had some really terrible cheap SSDs if I remember correctly

8:31 PM
@MadScientist This one actually has really good reviews

I'm using the WRONG answer. A seagate desktop hybrid harddrive.

@SaintWacko The nice ones are only ~75 EUR for 250GB

Or it did, until the most recent revision

@MadScientist Eh, most of them are OK. It's really just a fast USB drive, and we've had those forever.
@MadMAxJr ugh, I am SO sorry to hear that.

This one is the older revision

8:32 PM
Can't decide if I should get a PCI-E SSD

Kingston makes good stuff too

for the lulz

@Sterno get an M.2

I had $40 off on it at the time. It runs okay, but i'm told when these drives die, they die in spectacular manners.

they are WICKED fast

8:32 PM
@MadScientist Same with the RAM, I'd rather put that extra $45 towards a faster processor/better gpu for now

PCI + SATA all in one connector

Finally, a new League of Legends question

Well, PCI-E is faster, right? Just insanely more expensive

@Sterno Nope. M.2 has PCI-E lanes built in (up to 4x I believe)
so I mean, yes, if you get a x8 or x16 PCI-E SSD... but I don't think those exist
the trick is to make sure that the M.2 drive you get is actually using those lanes

Also, I haven't actually purchased the SSDs yet, so we'll see

8:34 PM
Do things other than sound cards use those tiny PCI-E x1 slots?

@MadMAxJr LAN cards sometimes

Can't think of the last time I had a card for network.

> The M.2 form factor ensures next-generation platform support with an M.2 PCIe slot. An optional half-height, half-length (HHHL) adapter is also available for many existing motherboards without an M.2 socket.

The thing I'm looking at show some M.2 SSDs that are about 540 MB/s read, and some PCI-E SSDs that are 2500 MB/s

8:36 PM
Does this mean I was right?
@Sterno Again, the M.2 Interface, provides both SATA 3.0 and PCI-E 3.0 lanes

Hmm, actually yes

If the drive you plug into it only uses the SATA connection, it's not going to work as fast

I wasn't paying enough attention
I blame @Unionhawk

@TimStone Does this mean I get your diamond? Kthxbai
THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE

No, you get the actual Tim Stone. A fragment of Tim.

8:38 PM
You can have @Wipqozn's room ownership, I guess

Huzzah!

HANDS OFF MY ROOM OWNERSHIP
4

QQ

@MadMAxJr A fragment of stone?

@MadMAxJr with PCI-E 3.0, you can get 985 MB/s through one PCI lane. That's nothing to scoff at!

8:40 PM
Now I'm just picturing data packets doing multi-lane drifting back and forth between card and motherboard. I'm also very bored at work. That might be why.

@MadScientist Ah, that's better. Still annoying though

@MadMAxJr fast and furious 8, RAM drift

RIP Paul Walker :(
I guess he should have been walking

He was too fast and too furious for this world.

Now he's Pall Bearer
Ha cha cha

8:42 PM
Now I'm reminded to check my Corsair RMA.

Reddit. Reddit never changes. m.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/3zt7ul/…

@ardaozkal That's a good one.

@ardaozkal the original question was "do it have a warranty"

@MadScientist So how can I find out how large of a PSU I need?

also, the shitstorm in that thread was unreal

8:45 PM
Oh, pcpartpicker estimates it
Hmmm
Well, crap

@SaintWacko There are probably calculators for this. You can also just try to find out how much your GPU and CPU use at max and just add a bit to that. Something like 500-600W should be safe for a single-GPU PC

@MadScientist There's this for the same price I'm already paying

> He was up all night to get Luckey.

hmmm
fastest way of getting rep? ASK MORE QUESTIONS.

Hrm. That system came out to $3662. I'd better try again.

8:47 PM
@SaintWacko Not enough if you want an AMD card equivalent to a 970

@MadScientist I already have a 970

Although $1200 of that was the 1.2 TB SSD with 2500 MB/s read

GPUs often list what kind of amperage they need on the power hungry ones. You need to find out if your PSU puts out enough on the 12 volt rail to meet that amperage requirement.
And additionally, if your PSU provides the power molex connectors the GPU needs.

I've ordered all the parts for the computer already

It's close for a 970, but it works (if the PSU is a good one). I have a good 430W PSU and a 970 + i2500k (not overclocked), and it works

8:48 PM
second time my node gets physically replaced today

But I could return the PSU

I'm getting mad at digitalocean

I haven't followed this conversation closely. What's the PSU and what's the GPU?
I can look up the amperage rather easily.

I wouldn't go that close though, I only did it because I already had the PSU

Of course, there's also this for $15 more

8:50 PM
@MadScientist I have the 2500k. Such a great little CPU.
If only it supported PCI 3.0...
I really need to replace it...

Nothing really happened in CPUs since that one was released, I'm not even tempted to upgrade

That PSU puts out 62.5 amps. Unless you're running triple or quad SLI, you're fine.

Of course, that one's not modular

Q: What is the best use for gold in Minecraft?

ScarlettI can't think of anyway to use gold properly. It is quite weak if it's used for tools or armour, and because of its rarity, I'd rather not used it for stuff like that. I'm also not really into decoration, so just a gold wall won't really be the answer I'm looking for! Is gold just useless or is t...

8:52 PM
@MadScientist PCI-E 3.0 and 40 Lanes of PCI

@MadMAxJr Wait, I'm an idiot, this one is the other one I'm looking at

@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment gl

Definitely worth the upgrade for me... I just have to save up the cash.

@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment This is going to be a great proposal

37 amps at 450 watts. That'll do the trick.
Huh. Looking up the GPU lists wattage requirements. Guess we don't do amperage anymore for that.
The NVIDIA 200 to 400 series were power hungry beasties. When the 500 and later came out, requirements got much gentler.

8:55 PM
I think my home computer has a 680. Not bad, but aging

I've got a EVGA 'Classified' 770. It does really well.

Unfortunately the only processors to have 40 PCI-E lanes are the intel extremes...

The first game it's choked on is Black Ops 3.

I'm just testing it now, Prime95 and FurMark running get me to 320W.

@MadMAxJr considering there weren't any desktop GTX 800's, it's only one generation old.

8:57 PM
Is it sad that the computer @SaintWacko is building is as powerful as the one I spent like 3 times as much on 4 years ago? And that's ignoring the graphics card being better than the two of mine combined.
Wait... has it only been 4 years? checks

@Powerlord 4 years is a long time for computer hardware
Moore's law is a bitch.

Might be closer to 6 years.

@MadMAxJr Hm, okay. I may switch to that one then
I didn't realize it needed so little power

at 4 years, the number of transistors in his computer will be... ~32 times higher.

Hmm, is this a good one?

9:01 PM
@twobugs yay!

Sorry, it's been nearly 5 years since my computer came out. It was shortly after the i7-2600 came out in Q1 2011.

Moore's law actually has less of an effect now. Core speeds are about the same as they were 5 years ago, and adding more cores only helps so much

@SaintWacko +3.3V@20A, +5V@20A, +12V@45A, -12V@0.3A, +5VSB@2.5A This is under the specifications tab. The +12V you want to look at. For modern cards, ~30 or more is ideal.
The current listings though tend to list by wattage requirements instead of amps. The card claims 225 watts is 'enough'.

Q: Minecraft- Enabling Command Blocks

SHaskel MCI own quite a cool minecraft server but the command blocks are not enabled. I turned it to "true" in the server settings but it's still not working. This is extremely important because it makes sure that the players will not cheat in KitPvP, Survival, etc. Please answer.

@murgatroid99 True, but Graphics cards are all about more cores - and that's where a lot of the perceived benefit to gamers comes from
as well as SSDs

9:02 PM
@MadMAxJr Yeah, PCPartPicker says this build should take 382W at max

Okay, now I'm down to $2482. Goodbye, 1.2 TB PCI-E SSD

@Sterno If you're making sacrifices like this, the terrorists have already won.

@SaintWacko Could you go up to a corsair or seasonic PSU?

@twobugs :(

ah yeah, just saw that. Seasonic is good.

9:04 PM
@Ampt I'm actually looking at a seasonic PSU right now

@Sterno Look, if you don't spend all your money on this, trickle down stops working and you kill the american dream
is that what you want?!
to kill the american dream?!
Now start trickling down on me!

Is seasonic a good brand for PSUs?

@Ampt AMPT WANTS A GOLDEN SHOWER: DATA ACCEPTED

I Don't actually know a lot about these

@SaintWacko Personally I only go corsair, but I've heard really good stuff about Seasonic and Antec as well

9:06 PM
I've had good experiences with Seasonic, it's a pretty well known good brand

The guy processing my Corsair ram RMA is gonna love me.

Well I may get that one, then

@MadMAxJr ripê

For those of you not familiar with memtest, that little red number shouldn't ever be that high.

@MadMAxJr what have you DONE

9:07 PM
@MadMAxJr wow, that's busted.
How fast does the error show up?

I'm just looking at the values

user image

And it wasn't even /done/ testing. that was six hours in.

if it's nice and quick they'll love you :D

it looks like you've got some lines busted

9:07 PM
Seasonic 550W gold certified
Sound good?

@SaintWacko yup!

I'm wondering if it got damaged in a power outage. I'm kind of surprised windows was even booting.

@djsmiley2k Every single memory cell he's tested on that screen is corrupt.

Someone selling one used for the same price as the 850W bronze I have ordered

But yeah, I was getting Win10 BSOD errors (Which hilariously give you a big :( face )

9:08 PM
@Yuuki And yet Rey has the most arms!

Oh, yeah, random coupon code "SPRING0410" saves me 5%

@twobugs Oh SNAP!

@twobugs for now

NOW I CAN TOTALLY AFFORD THAT $1200 SSD

When i started up memtest it shot to 2 errors quickly.
I didn't think it'd get that high.

9:09 PM
@murgatroid99 True, it took the others 2 movies to lose theirs

I bought a new set in case they say 'customer damaged'. If they RMA it and return a refurb set, awesome 16gig

@MadMAxJr Judging by the numbers, it looks like one individual chip was borked. Corsair will probably just replace that one chip.

I should start preparing for my new PC build. I hate all of you.

I should start preping for my new house...

I just upgrade my current PC one part at a time

That's probably the most reasonable thing to do but it's also the least fun for my lizard brain which likes new things

When I killed memtest it says 64% of all tests completed, of those 2% passed.

@MadMAxJr wow, I'd never seen that version of memtest

@ardaozkal kill me

Sorry, THIS is the one I was looking for:

lol

@StrixVaria Okay, so I just put together a machine that's about $2300 before tax/shipping on CyberPowerPC. It was hard to find perfectly exact matches, but very similar components on NewEgg would have been $2150. Just to give you an idea of their markup

is that to build and test?

9:19 PM
@Sterno that is... relatively small

That's also with a 5% discount with the code SPRING0410, which from my understanding has worked for years on their site

Hmm, I looked a bit through meta but the situation, judging from few mod recommendation discussions I found, seems to be that the community is a bit split on the matter, but that a question trying to solve a specific in-game problem that is not solvable with the game alone might be valid. So I'll just go ahead and leave it to the community to close it if necessary.

@badp I'm not sure what you're asking

@badp Do you have a problem with thinking?

@NapoleonWilson The real test: does it confuse badp?

@NapoleonWilson link?

I don't think I had to consult a FAQ at all for the first The Room game.
...I haven't played the second since it's smart phones only.

@badp To what?

(maybe tablets too, but I don't have one of those either)

@NapoleonWilson to the question

@NapoleonWilson If you ask a question and it turns out that the only way to answer it is with a mod, that's fine. Just don't phrase it as "what's a mod to do X?"

@badp I haven't asked the question yet, that's why I was asking if it's ok.
