Serenity #1 picks up after the movie. The writing is good, though the action is split between several sub-plots that are obviously setup for later issues, which does make the first issue a little exposition heavy
The art is... well, I haven't watched the show in a while, but I did have difficulty identifying characters. Just a different medium I guess.
Lil' Battlestar Galactica is hilarious, though totally not worth the price I paid :P
I also grabbed a copy of My Little Pony: Friends Forever #1 last week. Disappointingly the best part of the issue was the cover art.

Q: How many megabytes does Garrys mod multiplayer use?

McSwaggerI have limited data and I just need to know!!!

@PrivatePansy Aww
@PrivatePansy Wait, I don't really do a lot of comics, is that like... serenity rose?
Ooooh the firefly type stuff right?

@RedRiderX The full name of the comic is Serenity: Firefly Class 03-K64 - Leaves on the Wind #1
Which is horribly clunky

Indeed
Ah, can't find it online
And I doubt my shop will have it :P
but I'll see I guess

Oh okay
thanks

FAE
Evening all.

Howdy
Hmm do I spend $30 or $3 on comics...

FAE
@Arperum I feel like this means you have crappy knives.

Maybe $33!

5:24 PM
$33.50
@PrivatePansy Another comic to add to my pull list. Thanks, guys!

Well I doubt this is in Canadian dollars either

TFAW offers relatively good prices for comics, if you can order enough issues to make up for the shipping fees

Oh this isn't the digital price?
derp missed that
Yeah there would be shipping too

If you want digital you should be looking at Comixology

@PrivatePansy I don't think Dark Horse is on Comixology.

5:29 PM
Oh? I thought most of them are. Lemme check.

I could be wrong, but I didn't see any of their stuff.
Please prove me wrong.

@PrivatePansy Yeah first place I looked
@Coronus Yes please do
Because I can't find any

@OrigamiRobot I got to the part with the trading post. That was so painful to watch.

Hmmm, yeah, Comixology doesn't have Dark Horse
What a shame. Do they sell digital copies somewhere else?

@PrivatePansy Dark Horse sells directly on their site.

5:32 PM
How are digital comics sold? I assume they don't just send out .pdf files.

FAE
@Yuki Usually .cbrs

Comixology has some sort of locked down format, though they have readers for every platform imaginable

@FAE How do they keep people from putting the files up on some servers for other people to view/pirate?

FAE
@Yuki Comixology is proprietary, apparently. And uh, well, people will always find a way to crack.

I mean, sure one assumes that a fan would pay money to support their content creators, but there's bad apples in every bunch.

5:35 PM
@Yuki They don't, anymore than Steam does.
Like Steam, they provide a bunch of stuff that makes using their software more compelling than downloading illegal copies.

Comixology does have this neat guided view thing which makes reading comics digitally a much better experience

@JasonBerkan I feel like that's a better path to take than straight DRM.

Guided view is the only way to read a comic on a phone.
2

They also drop prices on older issues faster than physical stores, and frequently put comics on sale at very good prices

@FAE Yea, the handles are worthless, and break at the point where they connected to the sharp end.

@StrixVaria How did that survive as long as it did?

@StrixVaria That looks like a bullshit alert.

FAE
@Arperum They're not full tang then. Always buy full tang knives. They're higher quality and also safer, as you've experienced.
@JasonBerkan Ugh comics on phones.

@Frank That's what I was wondering.

FAE
@Yuki I believe Comixology still has DRM.

Q: Making Chain mail in Minecraft Legit

LorikHey I have recently started playing Minecraft and found some chain mail but I can't find anything to make chain mail Armour with? What resources do i need to make chain mail ?

And if course being digital their comics don't go out of stock. Also makes it much easier to find exotic comics which retailers don't want to stock

@FAE full tang best tang

@FAE Less than optimal, but guided view makes it totally do-able. My only complaint is having to turn my phone to switch between portrait / landscape depending on which way the frame is orientated.

@FAE Comixology is definitely DRM. The reading experience is better than any of the non-DRM formats though

FAE
@JasonBerkan We always read on our tablets.

5:41 PM
@OrigamiRobot This

@FAE Which is definitely better. My phone is the only device that I carry with me everywhere, however, so I generally end up reading comics on it.

FAE
@PrivatePansy We use a different program to manage our comic reading for non-DRM versions of things.

I still very much prefer physical copies, as far as possible
The library here also has pretty good stock, so I don't usually have to buy if I want to read something

@PrivatePansy I was just thinking this. If they give a digital code, that's even better.

Alright, thanks to @Yuki, I just fixed all the sites on the network that were using the wrong default avatar, collected all of the source images into one folder on my computer for easy reference, then I made a replacement Grallery complete with off-green unaligned Comic Sans in an attempt to make @BenBrocka as mad as possible.
5

5:45 PM
@PrivatePansy Yeah that's always nice if you can get it

@Coronus I noticed some Marvel comics now do this

@PrivatePansy Wow really?
That's neat

FAE
@Coronus A very few do now, but it's not common, same way it's not common with books.
@GraceNote Why are some names in parentheses?

@FAE They are sites where I have an avatar but it doesn't necessarily match thematically, so they don't really serve as any kind of hint as to who or what the character is.

@GraceNote Darn, I can't pick favourites

FAE
5:48 PM
@GraceNote Ah, gotcha.

I mean, I'm more partial to the Arqade one, but it might just be skew.
And it's only a partial preference.

Everything else - through obvious links, through some-deduction-required, through silly puns, or through insane and impossible logic - is matched to an appropriate site.

@GraceNote If you want to make @BenBrocka mad, use Papyrus

I mostly felt like switching over to ELL because I like battleships.

It kinda reminds me of Palutena although the part of my brain responsible for "X really looks like Y" is completely broken.

Yay, new avatar finally switched over.

FAE
@JasonBerkan All the art is so tiny. :(
@Yuki Who are you now?

@FAE Still a random Monster Hunter. This time, I'm wearing Narga gear instead of Lagombi.

@FAE Armor set from Monster Hunter that was linked earlier.
It was suggested to me but I turned it down.

FAE
Ah okay.

5:54 PM
Although, now I want to switch avatars again.
><

FAE
@Yuki Make up your miiind, man, geeeeez.

@FAE Guided view takes a single panel and blows it up so it fits the entire screen.

@FAE Not necessarily. Each guided view page zooms in on a frame.

I used to switch mine more readily but mostly these days I like to pick one and settle with it for months. I had the Chinese one since... I want to say August last year.

@GraceNote If you like battleships, check out Arpeggio of Blue Steel.
It's anime ship porn.

5:55 PM
@Frank Carnival time is already on my list of things to look into.

@GraceNote Nice reference!
Plus, it comes with lots of anime girls to use as gravatars!

@JasonBerkan And then shows the entire frame afterwards for reference/appreciation.
For larger frames.

@Frank Once again I'll reassert that "Originates in a game" is a requirement. Arpeggio started as a manga, then became an anime.

@FAE - First frame of Mouse Guard - screenshot from my iPhone:

Are we talking about guided view?

5:56 PM
@GraceNote Oh, I hadn't realized it had to come from a game. My bad.

because guided view is slick

FAE
@JasonBerkan I dunno what that is, but that looks adorable.

@FAE I just feel like switching off my theme of "Monster Hunter" over to "Disney".

@Frank I'm a gamer, after all. The collection is symbolic of me as a gamer. Yeah, they mostly share a certain aesthetic, but what links everything together is that it's all games.

5:57 PM
Aaaaah Mouseguard!

And having Elsa as an avatar really fits the name.

@GraceNote So even if it becomes a game later, they're still no good?

A good comic and rpg

@Frank Correct.

Mouse Guard is an Eisner Award-winning bi-monthly comic book series published by Archaia Studios Press. The comic stands out on shelves due to its distinctive form factor -– a square (8" × 8") as opposed to the standard comic size (6½" × 10"). Mouse Guard is written and illustrated by David Petersen. Series one and two of the series have been collected in a single volume each, titled, respectively Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 (ISBN 1-932386-57-2), and Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 (ISBN 1-932386-74-2). In June 2013, Mouse Guard: The Black Axe (ISBN 1-936393-06-9), a prequel which deals with Cele...

5:58 PM
Equally hard to get either in print, unfortunately.

@FAE Go grab the app, then download any free single issue and try out guided view

Meanwhile any that later turn into an anime (see Kancolle for example), are fair game.

FAE
@JasonBerkan Huh. Makes me think of Redwall a little.

@FAE Yes quite
Except this is... grittier?
I'm not sure what to say

FAE
@PrivatePansy I've tried it before, I just prefer tablet size for stuff.

6:00 PM
Though I think only six of the current set actually have animated adaptations, regardless of whether or not the depicted character is in said animated adaptation.

realistic sounds silly

FAE
@RedRiderX The Long Patrol was pretty brutal, man.

@FAE Yeah true
But this is perhaps more so
Because you always feel like you're on the brink of having everything wiped out by something you have no control over

FAE
@RedRiderX That can get tiring to read after a while though. See TWD.

@FAE Well I haven't really read TWD (yes I know I just haven't read it) but yeah I can see your point.

FAE
6:05 PM
@RedRiderX I mean, I like TWD, I like it a lot, but it's not an easy read and it can get wearying when you keep going through the same kinds of ups and downs over so long.

The world does have a charm to it though
@FAE ah okay

FAE
And I haven't even been reading it for years, I only just started it in 2010.

I was super drawn to the RPG but can't find it in print which is a bummer

FAE
For Mouse Guard?

Yes
Well you can buy it but it's out of print so it's super expensive.
And if you want the box set?
forget about it

FAE
6:07 PM
That sucks. :(

@RedRiderX Just learn GURPS and convert it.

FAE
Just from reading the wiki blurb, it sounds like it'd be an interesting world to play in.

Yeah it's recommended in so many places as a great beginner's rpg.
More story over dice
so a lot less number crunchy stuff.

FAE
Reminds me of when a bunch of my friends and I made a Redwall club in high school, haha. You needed a teacher's sponsorship to make an "official" club, and we found one of the English teachers that was a big Redwall fan.

And Ballad of the Mousegaurd is cute
@FAE Hah yeah it's great series

It was sad to hear about Jacques death.

FAE
@RedRiderX Me too. :(

He was still writing a new book.

FAE
I haven't even read all of them, I lost track of them over the years.

It's been like... 20+ years right?
@FAE I've read them all :P
Well, almost all
Not the last one

FAE
6:11 PM
@RedRiderX Since he started them?

@FAE Yeah
no wait

FAE
@RedRiderX Longer than that I think even.
I thought it was somewhere in the 80s.

1986
Yeah wow that is a while

user15026
That's a year older than me. :p

He was churning out nearly one a year for a while

user15026
6:13 PM
And strangely that is a series I haven't ever read.

The did seem to get progressively darker near the end.

FAE
The Taggerung is the last one I read I believe.

By degrees, but you notice a difference between the first and last half of the series

@GraceNote Is Astronomy a female version of astroman from megaman and bass?

@AshleyNunn They're good books, technically a children's series, but not one that panders.
Some really great characters and a really well fleshed-out world.

@FAE That you can see ebb and flow over x hundred years

FAE
6:18 PM
@RedRiderX Yeah, it's so great.

@iani You can try asking this at SuperUser, but make sure to include more information, as there probably isn't enough here to diagnose and resolve the issue. — Frank 3 hours ago
sigh I wonder why I even bother telling them.

It might even be a few thousand "seasons" over the whole series it's hard to tell.

FAE
@RedRiderX I'm sure someone on the internet's mapped out a full timeline.

@FAE Yeah but I always remember the interim between books being described vaguely.
With only a few explicit references between books

FAE
@RedRiderX As if vagueness ever stopped hardcore fans!

6:21 PM
Hah true.

user15026
@FAE I don't know the series well, but this looks like a decent attempt at it. :)

The main thing I remember about the Redwall books is that multiple meals a book were described over the course of several pages each. Also Badgers are Badass

FAE
@AshleyNunn Hm, looks about right, for the events I remember.
@Sconibulus Yes and yes!
I was just looking at a page for something before I looked at that Redwall page and now I don't know what I was looking at...

holy crap discontinued nerf guns are expensive
The LongShot apparently goes for $200

user15026
@FAE That is fucking awful, those poor children!

6:35 PM
@FAE How did anyone think this was a good idea?

"Let's throw this perfectly good food in the garbage so that we don't accidentally give it to you without you paying!"

> But Olsen said he would not describe the tactic as a mistake.
Ooo... second mistake

user15026
Oh, but they gave them milk and fruit! facedesk

FAE
> "If students were humiliated and upset," Olsen said, "that’s very unfortunate and not what we wanted to happen."
Just... I can't even.

And THEN we'll give you milk and fruit after throwing your food away, to not only make this a humiliating experience, but an extra wasteful one.

6:37 PM
@FAE There's probably a typo in there, I'm sure they put the lunches in the compost so they could grow some money trees and recoup the amount they had already spent buying the food before it was served.

This man's job belongs to someone else already, I'm sure.

user15026
@FAE What did they expect!

user15026
@Sterno You cant have this lunch, but here we cant starve you!

FAE
@AshleyNunn Just like... here, let's announce to all the other kids that your parents are having trouble paying for your lunch and deprive you of lunch. This will be great! headdesk

user15026
@FAE But that isn't goingto cause you any sort of psychological harm ever ever ever

6:38 PM

They wasted more money working to throw the lunches away than they would have by just giving the kids free lunches.

@OrigamiRobot BECAUSE COMMUNISM!!!!

FAE
@OrigamiRobot Plus the fruit and milk they gave them as the replacement.

FREE LUNCHES? ARE YOU A COMMNIST?!?!
COMMUNISM

6:41 PM
@OrigamiRobot Or just billing the parents for the overdue amount, if they're really that concerned.

@Wipqozn Well, no, but the point of "people usually settle their balances" is a good one.

BUT COMMUNISM!
What are we talking about? I just wanted to shout about communism

@FAE It keeps happening

Which isn't something I can usually do because I'm not a paranoid republican like @Wipqozn is

Why can't you give me this food?
Because you didn't pay for it.
Well what are you going to do with it?
Throw it in the trash.
Then who _is_ paying for it?
Ummmmm....

6:43 PM
Clearly what should happen is everybody gets half portions!!
...and they only prepare half as much food, so no waste is made.
Nothing can possibly go wrong.

Oh man, what if they decide to charge the kids for the thrown away food?

@OrigamiRobot That would be even stupider.

7 mins ago, by Tim Stone
@FAE There's probably a typo in there, I'm sure they put the lunches in the compost so they could grow some money trees and recoup the amount they had already spent buying the food before it was served.
It's the only thing that makes sense.
Man, I want a money tree now. That'd be great.
They probably plan on watering them with the salty tears of those students too.

Straight talk, though: I honestly can't think of any solution that doesn't humiliate the kids and makes the parents pay up.
If the parents can't afford it, then it's a failure of the system that doesn't help the parents afford it.
so is it fair to assume neglicence?

6:47 PM
@badp The school district's supposed to notify the kids' parents if their balance is low/empty, but they couldn't get ahold of some people.
So rather than waiting or letting the kids have lunches in the interim and having parents pay the difference later, they did this.

They could have sent a note home explaining no further lunches would be given if the balance wasn't settled, for that matter.

@TimStone Wouldn't that have also been humiliating?
Although less so.

It would have been less humiliating.

FAE
@badp That's not public though.
In front of all the other kids.

@FAE Um, when your teacher has to send a note home on your diary (or similar) it's pretty public.
At least in the Italian classroom system.

6:50 PM
Sounds like the Child-Nutrition Manager wanted to pretend like that wasn't a ridiculous title to have by asserting their authority.

If it's a principal or similar, it's even worse.

I want to go to Utah and buy all these kids lunch.

If they would have just given them a piece of paper when they exited the lunch line it probably wouldn't have been noticed by other kids.

user15026
@OrigamiRobot Let's do it.

@TimStone But how are you going to identify these kids?

6:52 PM
That's how they identified them, they rang up their lunches and the system said "Oh, balance overdrawn."

user15026
@badp Well, they figured out whose lunches to take.

Then someone said "I'm gonna take your lunch and throw it in that trash can, sucks to be you."

FAE
@badp Article says that the balances were computed at the lunch line.

Q: How does the mission distribution of some Crewskills work?

AssylumI have Archeology. Sometimes I can select a mission to gain Artifact Fragments, sometimes not. How does this exactly work? When is such a mission available and when not? Is it pure luck? Does it have a non visible cooldown?

I guess they could've been given an extra slip on their way in
but then the children would've probably been extremely curious about it and read it aloud or something and... we're back to square one

FAE
6:54 PM
They're like 11 and 12, so I don't think they would've read it aloud.
