or ceiling

How did they have enough space to get a guitar into space?!

@badp I was just about to link that, but it's not showing up as the most recent one yet...
Oh, wait, the last one was just stuck in the cache

@djsmiley2k Sorry, had to reboot... yeah, physically split.
Into 8 pieces no less.

@Powerlord wow that is cool

2:03 PM
@fredley In space, no one can hear you scream play.

@badp All I can think of when I see that is HAIL ANTS

Q: Does tenacity decrease Warwicks ult damage?

SirDuckduckTenacity reduces the time of crowd control effects(such as a suppress) So if we take Warwick's ult : ACTIVE: Warwick blinks to target enemy champion, suppressing the target for 1.8 seconds and damaging the target 5 times in 1/3-second intervals. Warwick gains 30% life steal for the duration....

@StrixVaria Back on Crawl

@SaintWacko I do this every time I get a good character.
Stop playing, come back, die in 1 minute.

@StrixVaria I was on the last level of the Lair and the main vault was worms
I berserked at the end of it, got paralyzed, and was down to 1hp before the paralysis wore off
Now, normally that would have just been a really close call
But I was still berserking, so I couldn't drink potions, read scrolls, or anything

Oh, you took down those stupid siblings.
You also noticed and killed a lot of Hill Giants.

@GraceNote Yes, there were a ton of them this game
And yeah, I never have much trouble with the siblings
Did you see that both the spellbooks I was carrying as firebombs were Grand Grimoires?
o.0

2:44 PM
Okay, new game

so, it's time to make up the shitties predictions for tomorrow's Google I/O
We've already established that YouTube will get the Google+ treatment
Let's figure out how they can fuck up everything else now.

Q: Why do Infected people in Resident Evil 6 turn into insect-like life forms? (Spoilers)

RenderI am currently going through Chris's gameplay and realised that the J'avo turn into insect like creatures such as spiders, centipedes, and wasps etc ... Also, the last Boss in Leon's mission is a giant mantis like creature ... Can anyone give me a source for me to read that has more on this ?? W...

Based on the latest answer, this isn't addressed in the lore.
Can anyone who's played RE confirm?

Okay, so they'll publish their new Reader killer attempt #4, after iGoogle Buzz and Currents because that's what Google does

I have earned Peer Pressure on MSO!
wooo
pressured by my peers
story of my life

@kalina You deleted that RSS feed question?

2:48 PM
yes
you know me and being downvoted

Of course it should be as impractical as possible so list view is right out. They've even tried and scrapped automated concept maps so I guess the remaining approach is word maps

how can I maintain the illusion of being universally loved by all if I have downvoted posts

@kalina Personally, I respect people more if they maintain their unpopular opinions.

Yes: Google Mishmash. Pick a word, any word, and see news about it.
Totally going to be a thing.

@kalina Peer pressure blows.

2:49 PM
@fbueckert meh, leaving posts around for the sake of leaving posts around just adds clutter
I have a few downvoted posts on our meta

@FEichinger but different! (remember the "flowing covers" version of google news?)

Seems to be more seeding questions for the sake of having something to answer.

(I've never used it either)

2:51 PM
@badp Oooooh! That would be awesome, though.

Next up, Android. To really dig the platform in, they're going to have to announce a new form factor

@fbueckert can I take his comment and paste it on his answer?
please please please

@badp Nah, forced "Google+ Home", a recolouring of Facebook Home to be in line with the Google brand.

@kalina I'm not gonna say no.
I appreciate the irony.

@FEichinger Shipping by default into the Nexus 2-twenty, in the 1:2.2 format movies use (?)
Now you can watch Youtube videos as if you were at a big theater! Comes with free neck strain bands to simulate that feeling of watching the movie from first row. (US only, both the movies and the neck strain bands)

2:53 PM
@badp 1:2.4 nowadays, apparently.

@FEichinger sounds even better: the Nexus two-forty.
Of course it'll make a killer Nexus Q 2 companion product.

@kalina Ehh. Maybe crossing the line a little.

:(

@badp Now, let's pitch that to Google for a quick buck.

2:54 PM
but I like pushing the boundaries of the line a little
it's the best kind of thing

The Q 2 will be so magic it'll be discontinued three seconds after being announced
Please buy it now. Literally. Aww, too late.

@badp We could also design the marketing campaign already:

@kalina It's a comment. If it's over the line, it'll be deleted.

@FEichinger The Q 2 will make you Q Q.

I suppose I can't get downvoted for a sarcastic comment

2:55 PM
Also, I've VTC'd that as Too Localized.

plus, I doubt I'd get site banned for a single sarcastic comment

The game is available through PSN.

Also, I've VTC'd that as Too Localised.

> BUZZWORD Buzzword! Buzzword buzzword buzzword Buzzword Buzzword. Buzzword buzzword Buzzword.

@fredley oh wow keep clicking the scissors at the top of the footer on kickstarter

2:56 PM

Now, let's talk TV. Have you ever wanted to play Angry Birds with your 47-button TV remote?

I went searching. That's what I found.

@badp no, not really

@BenBrocka cute

in fact, I'm the wrong person to ask, I've never felt I've wanted to play Angry Birds

2:57 PM
With the exclusive Birds on Air, you can play Angry Birds on top of your favourite content!

I wish I had written Angry Birds, if only for its unique ability to turn a limited number of pixels randomly arranged on the screen into millions of dollars, but that is all

Watching "What Is Love 10 Hours" has never been this smashing!

Does no one see the inconsistency in that pic?

and if you press 2 2 8 8 4 6 4 6 AUDIO-II TELETEXT ASPECT-RATIO, you can also play Ol' Snakey!

@fbueckert no

2:59 PM
@fbueckert That's...not the picture for Legacy of Kain.

in glorious teletext resolution

@tombull89 There we go!

@FEichinger Are you tired of Engagement Management firms that don't appeal to your core demographic? Focus your positive real time CMS with our solutions today!

(That's on Sony's own website, by the by)

oh, I thought you meant something less obvious than that

3:00 PM
@BenBrocka Synergize your brand story with the best Google AdWords for YouTube keywords with automatic bidding management and Semantic Scrambling Technologyâ„¢

@badp twitch
Please do the needful when we touch base.
nope.avi

If people scroll down past your ad without clicking on it, SST will replace the page they're reading with a Markov-Chains-text generated from the previous text

@kalina If it's on the official product website, it doesn't need anything more subtle than that.

The user will almost not notice what happened and the core meaning of the post will be preserved! Mostly.

we are talking about the company who took their online services offline for months
I'm not surprised

3:01 PM
"Do the needful" sounds like some horrible 3rd world porn tour or something
4

This works on Youtube videos too by jumping randomly around the video until you can hear the guy say "balls" in hilariously distorted ways

@BenBrocka One way ticket to hell for you, sir.

Turn your product unboxing videos in something worth watching for pete's sake!
@tombull89 trumptet music You got the WAY TICKET TO HELL! You can use this to send tickets on their way to hell.
Open the Google Wallet app to manage your tickets.
US only.

@fredley Oh god that phone. My father had it. It was absolutely awful.

3:05 PM
@badp Yes
Not quite smartphones was a dark period

What about the N-Gage? Now that was a bad phone.

@tombull89 was the software incredibly slow and suicide inducing?

@badp That's Samsung in a nutshell.

Well it was supposed to be a "gaming" phone. But you had to take the back off and the battery out to change the cartridge.

@FEichinger That was the infancy of TouchWiz. It already had the command cube thing running at 5 fps

3:08 PM
@FEichinger The scary thing is they still do it, with their terrible Android skins

@tombull89 was it really THAT bad? That's hilarious
I forgot about that part

@badp I know. I had one of their pre-TouchWiz thingies as well.

@fredley Yes, every time I hear "TouchWiz" I die inside

The N-Gage is a mobile phone and handheld game system by Nokia, based on the Nokia Series 60 platform, released on October 7, 2003. The N-Gage QD replaced the original N-Gage in 2004. N-Gage attempted to lure gamers away from the Game Boy Advance by including mobile phone functionality. This was unsuccessful, partly because the buttons, designed for a phone, were not well-suited for gaming and when used as a phone the original N-Gage was described as resembling a "taco". In 2005, Nokia announced that it would move its N-Gage games capabilities onto a series of smartphones. These Symbia...

@tombull89 KILL
KILL WITH FIRE

3:09 PM
Fine. Don't onebox where I wanted you to.

@badp TouchWiz

Honestly the n-gage already was doomed the moment they decided to use cartridges of all the things

What else were they going to use? It was probably designed in 2000, mobile data was pretty much nonexistent.

@badp Just like the DS and 3DS, am I right?

@Powerlord Nintendo being Nintendo can get away with it. What other company still uses those?

(not that UMDs are much better)
@Brant Your link doesn't go the right place

@badp Yes it does

@badp The PSP Go was an abysmal failure, in part due to their insistence on charging the same price for digital goods as physical goods.

My friend's sister bought her husband a PSP for xmas a few years back. When I saw it was a PSP Go I thought "you poor bastard"
(also because she's kind of annoying, but it's not my place to judge that)

Holy shit
Just found pretty much the best armour in the game on D:2

3:16 PM
Someone I went to school with had this massive brick of a flip phone, with a camera that rotated. Can't find a picture of it.

@tombull89 Me too. The person who owned it was a total dick
I hated school
Well, some aspects of it
Mostly the total dicks

GOOGLE PLAY IS DESTROYING MY INTERNET CONNECTION
I also can't even upload all of my music to it

@kalina I like you you complain about me telling you to do things, say you're not going to do them, then do them, then complain

@badp In 2003 that was still pretty normal, especially for portables

@fredley if you notice, there is a consistent pattern

3:18 PM
@kalina Yes, I realise.

@BenBrocka was it also normal to place them behind the battery slot?

I'm not particularly happy about streaming music over mobile data either
in addition, I still haven't achieved the thing I wanted to achieve when I first set it up

@Brant Now that there's PS+ a Go wouldn't have been terrible. The Go is a forward thinking device (physical media on a mobile platform isn't great) but it was executed pretty poorly, especially at the price point

which was get the Daft Punk album I downloaded completely legitimately via bittorent onto my phone

Eventually people will be more comfortable buying digital goods but the Go wasn't the way to make that happen

3:20 PM
@BenBrocka There needs to be a bit more inherent ownership of digital goods, as well.

@badp no, but there are certainly other ways to plug in a cartridge. See also every other cart based console in the universe

see also: most recent penny arcade

@fbueckert Sony's method is actually pretty good

@BenBrocka There's still room for improvement, though.

@BenBrocka How's it different from Steam's?

3:20 PM
Since unlike Nintendo's systems you're not completely and utterly SOL if your console dies, you can redownload
And also back up (which is something Nintendo's consoles also sadly lack)

@kalina Why is this problematic?

@fredley it hasn't got more than 7k mp3s through my library yet
in hindsight, there were better ways to achieve my goals

@badp Aside from all the differences that arise from it being console based, the main difference is the ability to back up all your current crap, which is actually really nice, since you don't have to trust the ability to download later
But I doubt most consumers understand that

@kalina Interesting lesson in network bandwidth: Google used to move data around their network by loading lorries with hard drives and just transporting them where they needed to be

@BenBrocka (Steam has that too)

3:22 PM
@BenBrocka It's still locked to Sony's systems, though. If PSN all of a sudden goes out of business, you're SOL. If you die, you can't transfer it to your kids.

@badp There's no "back up my steam games" button in steam though. You can do it, but it's a manual operation

@fredley I AM NOT GOOGLE

@fbueckert That's what the backups let you do

@BenBrocka ...yes there is.

@BenBrocka There is.

3:23 PM
@kalina THANKS FOR CLEARING THAT ONE UP

File → Back up and restore Steam games

@BenBrocka I meant from a legal standpoint.

As long as I have my PC I can transfer all backed up stuff onto a PS Vita and be ready to go

@badp You gorram ninja!

@fredley GLAD TO HELP

3:23 PM
@badp huh, did'nt know that

Every company currently views digital downloads as locked to the buyer.
Non-transferable.

anyway, I'm now thinking that next month I'm going to buy 2 new 1tb discs and 1 2tb disc
and rebuild my raid array as raid 5

@BenBrocka also works across different accounts so long as the destination one owns the game

@kalina What is raid 5?

3:24 PM
@fredley Striped replication iirc

Neat

the 2tb disc will be to take a backup of everything on the array currently, before I destroy it

@kalina Just buy 2TBs of SSD and screw raid

disc.

@fbueckert Eh. "ownership" including the right to sell the game would be nice but it's not particularly necessary to functionally get what you want

3:25 PM
@badp disc

@fredley Good luck operating 2TBs worth of SSDs without using a RAID configuration

@fredley I DON'T WANNA

@kalina Only £1500

also why would you ever raid ssds
or did they fix the trim thing

@BenBrocka RAID 1 I suppose?

3:26 PM
I mean I guess you could get 4 512GB ones but that's still a pain in the butt

@BenBrocka It's something we should really be insisting on. We're moving to a digital future, and without that ownership, we're giving up basic possession rights.

@BenBrocka I stopped at two, heh.

@fbueckert I agree with what you're saying, continue

@badp What? No, RAID 0

And I have Windows on a smaller 128 GB one

3:27 PM
Mirroring isn't going to help you operate multiple drives as one volume

I have Windows on a 64gb ssd

@kalina Continue with what? I see digital goods as the same as physical goods.

all my data is on two discs in raid 0

@kalina Games on SSD?

@fbueckert lack of ownership in digital goods is giving up rights we already have

3:27 PM
Companies don't see it that way, though, so currently, I insist on physical goods as my preferred medium.

@fredley games on raid array
once I rebuild said array, I aim to get a 256gb ssd to run alongside my 64gb ssd

@kalina Apps on SSD for epic win

so my machine will have 6 discs/3 volumes
@fredley apps are on the ssd

@kalina SE does, but servers are a whole other beast anyway. :P

just not games

3:28 PM
@kalina Oh ok

the only game I had on my ssd was wow

@kalina Mostly because companies see it as their license to print money.

@kalina So surely you now have room for all the games?

@fbueckert yeah, means they can potentially sell you the same thing multiple times

MC is only a few MB anyway

3:29 PM
"No! It's not the same as a physical disc! You have to buy it again!"

@fredley no, I have 400gb of games

There will come a point where someone will challenge that, though, and companies will have to conform, adapt, or die.

@fbueckert they do that with physical stuff too though; VHS, DVD, Blu Ray (and lolHDVD)
In practice a single MP3 file can easily outlast the practicality of many physical copies

@BenBrocka There, at least, there's some value in re-buying it; usually better quality.

I have MP3s that I've had since I was 10

3:31 PM
Problem is, though, our future is now digital, with theoretically unlimited lifespans.

Even if you own an 8 track that does'nt do you a hell of a lot of good these days. The digital file is forever (well, if it's DRM free)

I don't think I have any 10 year old cds

And that's something most companies are still coming to grips with.
People don't want to have to re-buy everything for each platform they want to use it on.
It's a wonky state of current precedent from the first sale doctrine.

@fbueckert The way Sony does it is really pretty good; if the game works on multiple platforms you can download it on any of those platforms

@kalina MP3s were not a thing when I was 10

3:33 PM
Though going back and finding stuff you've downloaded is a pain in the ass

@BenBrocka What happens when the PSN dies, though?
It will, eventually.

But the backwards compatibility issue bites.

If Sony has their way, they'll just say, "Nope, your license is over now that PSN is done. Please re-buy it for PSN2."

@fredley I am sorry that you are so old
MP3s had a standard bitrate above 128kbit when I was 10

@fredley The internet was barely a thing when I was 10.

3:34 PM
@fbueckert Is that situation really so different from buying an 8 track and then not having an 8 track player? keep your backed up games = keeping your 8 track player. As long as it doesn't magically revoke your ability to use it it's not all that different from other models of planned obsolescence

@fbueckert dialup had ceased being a thing used more than broadband when I was 10

@BenBrocka Is there a process to back up all your PS games, though? I thought some things were locked to consoles.

I think the service pack for Windows 95 that added Internet Explorer had been added by the time I was 10, but I'm not sure

Though as things grow obsolete I really wish there were a better way to shift it all over to PC
@fbueckert certain types of save files are locked to the console. Games never are

@fredley Windows XP had been out for several years by the time I was 10

3:36 PM
@kalina Wow.
That puts it in sharp perspective

@BenBrocka And those can be backed up to external media, and re-transferred to alternate consoles?

@fredley windows XP -> 2001, me being 10 -> 2003

Worst case if PSN disapeared and you were properly prepared, you'd lose your PS+ crap (barring clock-munging, not sure if something that simple works), but PS+ is different since it's a service

I was psyched when my new computer had one of these:
100MB!!! In one disk!! Welcome to the glorious future of unlimited storage space!

what is physical media?

3:37 PM
And the eject lever had an LED in it. Awesome.

I don't know of this thing

@BenBrocka So long as the PS3 doesn't restrict usage if it can't find a connection to PSN, I'm alright with that method.

@fbueckert yeah, Iv'e had to do it before. You lose certain save data (notably PS1/2 memory cards need to be backed up separately for god knows why) but the data comes over. And you'll need to set up that PSN account on the other PS3. You need one user that "owns" the content to play it is all basically

I still want a way to decrypt my dead PS3 hard drive, though.

@kalina It's a gigantic 100MB Floppy disk

3:38 PM
That was Sony's stupidest move.

@fredley I know what it is...

1 min ago, by kalina
I don't know of this thing

@fredley ...I googled 'Zip Disk' a minute ago

@fbueckert Yeah, I Wish they'd ditch the stupid-ass encryption, HDCP etc

@fredley sarcasm

3:39 PM
@kalina I remember before Google
I remember Google being a new thing

!?!

@BenBrocka I've got several hundred hours of saves locked on that hard drive.

There was a "Before Google" ?????
those must have been bleak times

Breaking copyright is already illegal, there shouldn't be "anti-circumvention" or any other bullshit

how did you ever find anything before Google?

3:39 PM
My first mobile device:

I periodically Google methods of decryption, to see if someone's figured it out.

@fredley is... that a pager?

@fbueckert that doesn't always help
HDCP is broke as hell but you can't easily get a device to do it

I don't think I've ever actually seen a pager in real life

@kalina Yes! I could receive text message - which had to be dictated to an operator - on it

3:40 PM
@BenBrocka If I knew what to look for, I'd image the HDD, and just brute force it.
HDCP, I don't care about. I don't like it, but it's not a personal hate, currently.

@fbueckert It's fucking up my ability to record so I hate it a lot
And it doesn't actually prevent me from recording at all...it just prevents me from recording and getting my game in proper HDMI quality

@BenBrocka Yeah. It's when it's personal that the rage really starts going.

So it doesn't stop pirates, it just stops gamers who want to share and enjoy their gaming experience

@fredley I think my first mobile device was a bright pink motorola razr

@kalina Second

3:42 PM
@BenBrocka Welcome to the basic problem with piracy.

The only ones it inconveniences are the legitimate customers.

@kalina You like your pink don't you?

@fredley hey I was like 13 at the time
I didn't buy it, it was bought for me

3:43 PM
@kalina And now?

and no, I prefer purple

@fbueckert Yeah I'm pretty pissed at Sony about it. There's NO reason to HDCP game output

@kalina Noted.
*Adds to list of kalina facts*

darker purples are better

Speaking of Googling, I guess it's time for me to check again for PS3 decryption.

3:43 PM
a distinct mix between pink and blue

HDCP only exists for video and music, stuff where the recording is the whole thing

@kalina #3D185E?

And now that they're including streaming in the PS4 they're allowing devs to black out some parts of the game for recording, that's also terrible

@BenBrocka Almost guaranteed, it's bowing to Hollywood pressure.

@fredley bit pinker

3:45 PM
@kalina #4F1854

something like that

@kalina #6B194F?

@fbueckert The feature's just for games though, unless you mean HDCP
I think the streaming thing is just a stupid idea they thought would placate douchebag devs who don't want people making free advertisements for their games

@fredley closer to #4700B2

@BenBrocka Any dev that actually makes use of it (coughEAcough) is going to be incredibly unpopular.

3:47 PM
hm
that's not what I pasted

But I already have a capture card anyway so I doubt I'll use the built-in streaming
@fbueckert EA actually has streaming to Twitch built right into Origin. I was quite impressed, I wish Steam would do that

@kalina Royal Purple

I like #7E4DC9 too, that's what the buttons on my mouse are set to

I really hope no one actually blacks out parts of the game. I mean if they're smart they're going to realize how pissed people are going to be when they're live streaming the game to their friends and suddenly eveyone gets a black screen saying "LOL U CAN'T SEE THIS PART GG NUBS"

doesn't quite look like that when it's on the mouse, granted

3:49 PM
But the fact that you can do that is bullshit and sets the wrong precedent

@BenBrocka I don't even know why Sony would include that sort of functionality.

Apparently the nearest named web safe colour can be either Pigment Indigo or Indigo Blue.

Unless it's for "Oh noes! Must censor this!"

@fbueckert I don't know either, I wonder if a big third party they worked with complained
Because that's gotta be relatively complex to ad, since the game has to talk to the streaming functionality now too

@BenBrocka I honestly don't know what this addresses that region-specific games don't.

3:53 PM
@fbueckert censorship-wise? I don't know if it was intended for that. Also Blu Ray is region free anyway (Sony can be pretty cool sometimes, I'm VERY happy BD isn't region locked)
I don't think it was for censorship though
Censorship-wise, what would you be okay with showing the player but not other people watching the game?
Not like it'd help your ESRB rating anyway

@BenBrocka Yeah, I was thinking about that.
It didn't make sense to show a different picture to the gamer than the viewer.

The press release I read made it sound like they might want to black out the final boss or something
If you want to pull that shit with review copies, sure. But once the game is publicly released the cat's out of the bag

I find the term "black out" offensive. Please censor yourself.

@kalina Apparently, your attempt at irony has failed.
