7:00 PM
as usual for British TV shows, 2 seasons, 7 episodes per season

GameStick public launch delayed, backers reporting crashes http://sbn.to/HNjwud
womp womp

The UK version of Being Human was way better than the US version...

@Fluttershy I couldn't get in to that show. Never bothered with the US version

I guess the good thing about the Ouya yearly refresh is these microconsoles are probably never going to be perfect/usable in the first batch
Pokewalker vs wii u fitmeter

7:05 PM
@kalina I downloaded it, I think this will work
so no blame for you

victorious

meh, I'll find something else to blame you for
hey, I'm hungry. your fault

you can't, I left the DMZ
there's nothing to blame me for

bleh

Woo! Finished putting together my first model.

7:08 PM
@fbueckert this sounds like a productive thing to be doing instead of looking for work

@Fluttershy Call of Duty has a single player mode?

@kalina I need some rest from job stuff.
Putting together models is a nice distraction.

@fbueckert I'm using this reasoning too

And with that, all my productive stuff planned for the day is done. Even cleaned the bathroom!

sounds like you had... fun

7:10 PM
@kalina If you can call it that. I called it checking stuff off the list of stuff that needed doing.

clean the oven, get high off the oven cleaner fumes

So now it's lunchtime, and then more Guided Fate Paradox.

Q: Skill points acquired during training and skill books and respecing

KedorMy question is: When i get some skill points in for example Blacksmithing, Detect Hidden etc by reading books and using trainers, will i get those skill points back when i respec my char at fatewaever? Or those points will be gone?

my random downvoter is back!
I blame @fredley
just trying to get that edge on me all of the time

7:15 PM
@GnomeSlice So... two more hours?

@Yuki shrug

What's AMA?

ask me anything
they go on Reddit and answer questions

@3ventic American Musical Aardvarks.

those are probably also on reddit

7:18 PM
So... did we ever find out what caused the numerous SteamAppXXXX entries in the Steam Library?

@Yuki half life 3

@kalina I refuse to be believe that Valve will ever release anything with a title of <franchise name> 3.

@Yuki L4D3 is already definitely going to be a thing, so...

@Unionhawk Lies!

Okay, whatever.

7:21 PM
@BenBrocka Only thing I can find is a British musical aardvark

But maybe this isn't the best link for this room...

@Yuki It was a bug with Mac versions and betas, IIRC.

eh

@RedRiderX The best link for this room is one of ones that saves Zelda.

I clicked "delete" on mod tools
got no message
clicked it again, and it cast an undelete vote

7:24 PM
@Powerlord Badum tiss

SYSTEM IS BROKEN

Yeesh, I'm still at work for 3 more hours? :O

@kalina obvious deleted account bug

kicks @Wipqozn
5

@RedRiderX Basically the US and Israel stopped paying UNESCO dues because Palestine got recognized as a country, and now they lose their seats.

7:25 PM
My day is going turtle slow, so it must be Wipqozn's fault.

@Unionhawk obv

> "The United States must not voluntarily forfeit its leadership in the world community," Rep. Keith Ellison, a Democrat from Minnesota, told The Associated Press in an email.
Yes we should.
Or did this guy forget that most of the world hates the US?

@kalina EA is in direct competition to Call of Duty.

oh wait

@kalina lol'd
EA doesn't have a monopoly yet

7:32 PM
COUGH
NO EVIDENCE

No fun

Still, I'm surprised that Activision didn't try releasing it on Blizzard's store thingy

I forgot Activision was even a thing
do they actually release anything that isn't COD?

Activision bought themselves recently

Speaking of which, I need to find out if my Blizzard account works again now that North America is back in sync with Europe.

7:33 PM
I'm pretty sure they release a lot of stuff..

I know they used to be heavily involved with id

@kalina It's Activision Blizzard now, so stuff like Diablo 3 falls under their umbrella.

before id became a subsidiary of Bethesda

7:34 PM
@Powerlord ok rephrase, swap "release" with "develop"
@3ventic ok so... no, they don't

@kalina Activision itself became a publisher long ago.

@kalina You forget room owners can view the history of the deleted item. There will always be evidence.

Which is funny seeing as how they were one of the first third-party video game developers.

@Fluttershy NO EVIDENCE
Blizztivision isn't even a company I pay attention to anymore

@kalina Destiny and Cabella

7:36 PM
I'm only interested in blizzard because hearthstone looks cool
and I want to try it

@Ullallulloo is Destiny the game that the remains of Bungie made after being cut loose from Microsoft?

@kalina yeah

do... that other company
makers of Unreal
actually make games anymore?
Epic?

Destiny ^

oh right, they moved on to making gears of war
that explains why I don't pay them any attention anymore

Q: How can I tighten security?

BrysonicA couple of times, when I've been tasked with locating rebel scum within the Death Star, I received a message saying that the hero had escaped my clutches (even though I tracked him down). How can I prevent this from happening?

they work on Gears of War and apparently infinity blade
But the most relevant thing they do is definitely Unreal Engine

I'm sure I played a game recently using the Unreal engine, that's what reminded me of them
can't remember what it was though

Lots of things are, even non-FPS games are

isn't it about time for another Unreal Tournament?

Borderlands 2 was for sure, GG Xrd is being made in UE
I'd love another UT, not sure how well 3 turned out
I actually own it due to the Unreal Deal pack
UT99 will probably always be my favorite though

7:40 PM
There was a time when pretty much every FPS ran on either an ID engine or an Unreal engine
wait, is it Deus Ex Human Revolution that uses the Unreal engine?

@GnomeSlice so much potential :(

@Blem =[

@BenBrocka Mass Effect is an Unreal Engine series too

@kalina Well pretty much every FPS was cloning either an ID or Unreal game.

@TimStone was, the new ones use Frostbite 3
It must have been the Batman game I played that uses the Unreal engine

7:42 PM
Dishonored is UE too
and xcom

I guess Epic took ID's business model and executed it better than they did

and then limited themselves to high sale console games

$20 is a fucking steal for that game

@kalina UE's engine is a lot more versitile than Doom's engine though

Q: Avoiding killer croc bite in boss fight

Let_Me_BeI'm really struggling with the first boss fight. I can manage to get killer croc down to one bar, but at that point I'm at half health just from the bite during the QTE. I'm really struggling to avoid the three henchmen that pop-up. I always get hit in the middle of a block action by the croc. ...

and, at the time, they were still regularly making new games

@BenBrocka ID is circling the drain as far as I'm concerned

Does ID even do anything?

they've not made anything worth playing in a decade and their technology isn't that good either

@GnomeSlice I did like what they did to end the show, though i would have prefered to see it go on for another season or 2

7:45 PM
@BenBrocka they're working on Doom 4

@Blem Yeah, I guess. But we'll never know if Eli survived...

@BenBrocka they cancelled it and started again, then John Carmack left and joined Occulus

Last I recall was Doom 3's console port/DLC bundle
The coolest thing about Doom 3 was the mod that recreated Doom One in the new engine, and they Cease and Desisted it

@BenBrocka you mean the transferring of Doom 3 into the RAGE engine and then releasing it without testing it right?
@BenBrocka This is very unlike ID

@kalina yeah I was surprised

7:47 PM
I mean up until John Carmack left, they still frequently released their old engines as opensource
I don't know if they're going to keep doing it
I reckon Bethesda will shut it down at some point anyway

Well they supported mods, I think they just had a problem with a mod recreating Doom

If you look at everything ID have ever released, they've all been tech demos for the engines rather than actual games

though of course it's a very different game with real 3D

with the exception of Wolfenstein 3D and the first couple of Dooms
all of the later Wolfensteins weren't made by ID, they were made by Raven
and Quake 2, 3, 4 and Doom 3 were really just showing off the engines

Hexen?

7:49 PM
@GnomeSlice made by Raven

Heretic?

@GnomeSlice made by Raven

Bleh

wolfenstein ET is great

@3ventic made by Splash Damage

7:50 PM
@kalina ik
I just said it's great since you mentioned wolfenstein

Wolf 3D was pretty awesome back in the day.

@3ventic made by Raven

Wolf 3D might be older than @kalina and @GnomeSlice
I remember playing it when it came out. :(

@Sterno Wolf 3D is definitely older than me, I think Doom might be as well
sec

Wolf 3D was 92

7:52 PM
@Sterno Doom was released when I was 10 months old
you view Doom as groundbreaking and important for the games industry
I view Doom as quaint
"really? Games used to look this bad?"

My dad used to play so much Doom

I remember Wolf 3D more fondly than Doom because it was way easier to make your own maps.

he'd play it when he was taking breaks from work.

Wow

He knows like every single secret in all of the games

7:53 PM
One of my colonists just got struck by lightning

@SaintWacko happens

@kalina didn't realize raven made all of that stuff

@SaintWacko I had a conduit in a wall overload from Lightning, blew up half of my base and everything connected to it

Also, a nice freeware doom-like game is Pit

@kalina conduits blowing up is stupid

7:54 PM
I went to some summer camp college thing in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Wolf 3D was on one of the library computers there. I bought a 3.5" floppy disk for like $5 so I could copy it and take it home.

@BenBrocka yeah Raven (and later Activision, when they bought Raven) loved licensing ID engines

Ah, the good old days.

I really hope he removes that

Also Snorms was inspired by doom.

Activision bought them? Augh

7:55 PM
@BenBrocka in 1997, according to Wikipedia

Also

Which means Activision was in control when they made both of the Wolfenstein remakes

@BenBrocka And all the Heretic guys left.

I thought RTCW was pretty decent
I didn't like the latest one

doomish

7:57 PM
The most successful game ever made using an ID engine was Half Life

@kalina It wasn't Doom?

@GnomeSlice Half Life was more successful than Doom, Doom was shareware

Doom was shareware. We all played the first level and never bothered paying for any more.

I didn't know that
My dad has all of the Doom games, except Doom3

@JasonBerkan First campaign, which was 8 levels (9 counting the secret level)

7:58 PM
The silly modern one

I remember the first time I played Dark Forces, I got stuck about three levels in because I needed to jump and didn't know such a thing was possible, because prior to that in FPS games, there was no jumping.

@GnomeSlice Doom 4 is due out... next year?

@Powerlord Okay?

@Sterno I remember playing GoldenEye and going WTF? You can't jump!

Anyone watch the Notch interview on Craig?

7:59 PM
@GnomeSlice The point being... don't refer to Doom 3 as the "modern" one. :P
Especially since it's a decade or so old by now.

@Powerlord It's more modern than the older ones...

Though I quit Dark Forces when you had to punch a friggin' Rancor to death.

@Powerlord there is technically a port of Doom 3 into the RAGE engine, which is relatively new
the problem is, Doom 3 was full of jump scares because of the lighting limitations
and porting it to the RAGE engine removed those limitations and gave you a flashlight on your big guns
removing the feeling from the game

Whichever one the movie was based on

@GnomeSlice The movie... hah

8:00 PM
Haven't seen it

Anyway, Thief 2 is best FPS

@Sterno Deus Ex, depending on how long we're going to argue about it being an FPS

@SaintWacko I had a colonist try to put a fire out last night. She managed to set herself on fire, and ran around frantically for a while before the rain put the fire out.

@kalina I will accept that as a valid opinion, though not my own. I liked Thief 2 better.

@Fluttershy Yeah, I've had that happen. Colonists are stupid

8:02 PM
I can't wait to see how much further they drive the series into the ground with Thi4f

It was hilarious. But at the same time, I felt bad.

@Sterno their

@kalina I don't know what you're talking about.

@Sterno you left evidence in the edit history

25 secs ago, by Sterno
@kalina I don't know what you're talking about.

8:03 PM
I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE

@Sterno you left evidence for yourself to see o_O

10/10 for LEAVE NO EVIDENCE.

Oh wow
16 raiders just landed

Q: What is a good way to earn Supreme Slayer?

bwarnerOne of the more challenging achievements in the Steam version of Desktop Dungeons is Supreme Slayer, which requires you to slay a monster nine levels higher than you. In other words, you need to defeat a level 10 monster at level 1. Any good ideas on how to accomplish this? All items, classes,...

8:04 PM
10/10 for mod abuse
5
wins

@TimStone Flagged as offensive.

@TimStone Congratulations, you win at Stack Exchange

@Sterno It's true, I photoshopped it to slander you
\o/

I was going to move it to Android Hell to abuse room ownership, but I can't find that room to move it to

@JasonBerkan next two worlds were worth it IMO. Inferno had some really cool designs
And doom 2 had some really cool levels. And a couple very confusing annoying levels

8:08 PM
obviously the best game ID ever made was Quake 3 Arena

@BenBrocka I hated the Doom engine. Too fast / skate-y. I don't think I finished the entire free part of the game.

It was part of the feel. Not for everyone, and a bit usual compared to modern games, but it was an interesting fast paced style

maybe not technically, but because of the whole multiplayer only thing
fast paced FPS were the best kind of FPS

They used my introooooo

the silly slow paced console stuff ruins the genre

8:11 PM
@kalina Until you were tasked with jumping over something. Then it's just massively frustrating, as you fall and die, fall and die, fall and die, fall and die, ...

Let's make a new file and stuff!

Anyone played Lost Planet?

@SaintWacko YES

@JasonBerkan I never had any issues with the FPS platforming complaint that many others do

@GnomeSlice I'm guessing you loved it too :D

8:13 PM
@SaintWacko Yessssssss

The grappling hook combat, and the VS suits
Holy shit
That VS at the end was amazing

@SaintWacko Have you played LostPlanet 2 or 3?

@GnomeSlice Nice!

I haven't played 3 yet.

@GnomeSlice No, I need to get them

8:13 PM
@kalina You are young and grew up on video games. Us old guys have poor hand / eye co-ordination.

@SaintWacko 2 is so good, there is an unbelievable amount of weapons and grenades and other gear
Although if you play online everyone uses the sand raider female body with the jiggly chest

@GnomeSlice I'll have to pick it up

I've gotta go out for a bit
peace

Jiggle physics.

@JasonBerkan Doom only has a very few areas where "jumping" is even a thing
and IIRC jumping was just running off a ledge really fast
and hoping you didn't lose altitude before hitting the next platform

8:15 PM
World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor is the next expansion

technically the Doom engine was a very weird and interesting 2D space

@BenBrocka Wasn't there a section where you had to jump over a bunch of pillars? Or was that Quake?

WTF do people still play WOW?

My memory of those games is not very good.

Apparently

8:16 PM
@BenBrocka yeah Doom was actually a 2D game, the engine didn't support overlapping levels or anything like that

Think that must be quake, jumping more almost didn't exist in Doom

Shog9 on November 08, 2013

We’ve spent a good portion of the year trying to build out our teams to handle the increasing load of work here at Stack Exchange. A big part of this has involved bringing on new community managers: with both a larger number of sites *and* greater numbers of users on those sites, we hadn’t exactly been keeping up with the demand for help and guidance across the network. Tim Post signed on in the spring, followed by Jon Ericson, Gabe Koscky and Pops “Kevin” Chang.

Community Management at Stack Exchange is primarily a support role: assist folks in learning how to use the s …

It's necessary for some secrets and possibly a few levels, but not much

Yeah, Quake was all about rocket jumping.

and it's not hard other than knowing where to jump

8:17 PM
@Sterno millions of people

Well, where to run off

@kalina The question was WHY

@Sterno WTF = what, not why
but, people get hooked into MMOs because of the collections and achievements

"What the fuck do people play WOW?" makes no sense. Nor does "who". I'd have given you "when".

Regardless, Doom and its ilk annoyed me enough that I went back to Panzer General and HoMM.
Never to play FPS again (until BioShock).

8:19 PM
I was basically trying to avoid saying the word "fuck" because it's fucking rude and I'm a fucking gentleman.

@Sterno "WTF, do people still play WoW?" works, dropping punctuation is acceptable on the internet

@Sterno where is also possible
Personally I play it in the women's bathroom on my Surface Tablet

Jin

@Jin Is it a legal requirement that MOBA heros never thematically match?
I can always tell it's a MOBA because the mismatched diversity of player characters

@BenBrocka It spells that they're running out of creative ideas
It's like Batman vs Superman
but in the world of gaming

8:24 PM
@kalina That came out earlier, actually

it's much easier, cheaper, and quicker to mix and match IPs than create new ones
and Blizzard are probably still a bit sore over Valve poaching DOTA

I now have 6 colonists all wielding R-4 pulse rifles
The only problem is that they put out so much damage that I can't take prisoners
No one survives :(

@kalina Well LOL does the same thing and it's all original IPs isn't it? And DOTA2?

@SaintWacko I actually noticed later in the game that I couldn't get more colonists, once my overview page was full it was like it was hard coded not to allow it to scroll
@BenBrocka yeah but the original concept was done with DOTA the mod for WC3
which used Blizzard IPs
I guess everything after it just inherited that

Q: Do ethereals explode when they die?

Simon WaldmanWhen an ethereal dies, there is an animation where it is consumed by purple light. Does this do any damage to surrounding units? I had always assumed that it was purely a visual effect. However, an experience today made me wonder about that. A single ethereal was the last remaining enemy on a m...

Q: What is the correct softawre to open a .tar file?

BenI want to be able to play the game N, but I can't figure out what to use other than archive manager to open it. Here is the link to the game download. http://www.thewayoftheninja.org/n.html

@JasonBerkan buys old game on Kijiji, trades it in, sells new game(s)

@Lazers Yes, yes they do.

Geez
20 raiders

8:45 PM
Ran em off
Two colonists incapacitated

@SaintWacko I thought you said the game was too eas--... oh.

@Fluttershy HA!
And that's with me only having 6 colonists
Just wait til a slave ship comes along :)

I feel like I could take a nap.

Aaand more raiders
Only 12 this time

@SaintWacko Sounds like turrets may be a tad over powered.

8:50 PM
@Fluttershy Turrets suck
I don't use them

@SaintWacko Choke point? "In that narrow corridor, their numbers count for nothing" kind of thing?

@Fluttershy Sorta
Where you see the walls being rebuilt, I had a couple turrets

All that's missing is some shirtless guys.

Look away, look back, "All that's missing is some shirtless guys"

@SaintWacko Rimsworld?

8:59 PM
@Wipqozn Rimworld
