@kalina I went from 95 to 2000 to XP to Vista to 7 and even used Fedora and Cinnamon Ubuntu, but no other time have I had to change how I use a computer to avoid major parts of it that are stupid.

Q: Am I allowed to ask questions about streaming?

FabiánSay for example, I have issues with Quake 3 when trying to stream with Open Broadcast Software (OBS), and I want to ask how to resolve that problem, or that Path of Exile has an option for twitch, but (for instance) it doesn't work. Am I allowed to ask these kind of questions?

@Ullallulloo Have you used Unity Ubuntu?

@kalina How do I actually like... research stuff?

@Fluttershy build research table, assign somebody to research in overview, click research button

Well first you get your stuff and a microscope

6:03 PM
@Fluttershy sorry I meant -> ask question on Arqade. give me reps, get answer

@RedRiderX Yeah, but I installed Cinnamon pretty quickly.

@Ullallulloo I see.

It was annoying/confusing, but I couldn't really avoid it.

Unity has quickly turned into a very weird mess.

Have you ever tried living in a CLI?

6:05 PM
It still has some nifty features, but I wouldn't use it. GNOME 3 itself fits me a lot better.
@RedRiderX To be fair, CLIs aren't really a problem if you know what you're doing. But people who don't ... well, they usually also have a hard time looking that up and learning ... Heh.

Q: What is the fastest 4 seater car in Grand Theft Auto 5?

TamaFor a good getaway vehicle which is the fastest 4-seater car in Grand Theft Auto 5?

@FEichinger I'd think that the same would largely be true for GUIs

@RedRiderX Depends. Most GUIs are relatively intuitive and offer simple ways to get very detailed (and organised) information.

@Fluttershy I have an answer with freehand circles and everything ready to go! You're so mean

@kalina Post it.
Freehand circles always reign supreme.

6:12 PM
@RedRiderX I have no question to post it on!

@kalina Well post that too!

I don't want to get taxonomy by posting 50 questions under a tag
although I guess I could get taxonomy by posting 50 questions in one tag

@kalina I commented on your answer!

@Fluttershy I responded to your comment already!
if you note in my screenshot, my researcher pretty much only researches
because research is the lowest priority task

I posted a message in chat!

6:19 PM
if you have him doing other stuff, he'll do that first and only research when there is nothing else to do
which with only a handful of colonists, is never

@OrigamiRobot Really?
Are you sure?

Nah, I'm lying.
I'm such a loveable scamp.

@OrigamiRobot I thought so.

What TV series are worth watching?

@3ventic MASH

6:20 PM
@3ventic BBC Testcard

A short description plys

Once Upon a Time.

Q: How do I actually research something?

FluttershyMy base in RimWorld doesn't have very fertile ground outside. It's mostly sand, and incapable of sustaining my crops. I realize I can research Hydroponics so I can grow crops. The problem is, I don't know how to actually research anything. I have a research station, I have someone (a scientist)...

@Powerlord Worst TV rec ever

Although some people argue that it's gone downhill since season 1.

6:21 PM
@3ventic DW

@Powerlord Best TV rec ever
Just to counter @Sternold.

M*A*S*H is an American television series developed by Larry Gelbart, adapted from the 1970 feature film MASH (which was itself based on the 1968 novel ', by Richard Hooker). The series was produced in association with 20th Century Fox Television for CBS, which follows a team of doctors and support staff stationed at the "4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital" in Uijeongbu, South Korea during the Korean War. The show's title sequence features an instrumental version of "Suicide Is Painless", the theme song from the original film. The show was created after an attempt to film the original ...

(Season 1 of) Once Upon a Time is a TV series about a city full of fairy tale characters got stuck in the real world... but they don't realize that they're fairy tale characters. But then a new person comes to town...

6:23 PM
@Fluttershy working?

And it's got bad CGI and a story that goes nowhere
It's like Lost if you removed the attractive locale and decent acting

@Sterno Lost had decent acting?

@3ventic Code Geass

@3ventic what sort of thing to do you want to watch

@kalina I dunno. I'm at work! I'll test it tonight. :P

6:26 PM
@Fluttershy YOU SUCK
I mean... fine
why don't you play it at work

@kalina <3

it's pretty lightweight

@kalina Oscar-worthy by comparison

nobody will ever notice

Because I can't.

6:27 PM
sure you can
run it off a usb stick

@kalina I'll start with Swedish crime mystery

Which is extra special since Oscars are for movies

store it on your phone
SOMETHING LIKE THAT
@3ventic well, not quite swedish, but if you like mystery you could try watching Jonathan Creek

Why does SE chat have to be so bright :(
I want a dark theme so I can hang around here when it's dark

it's an old UK TV program about a magician's assistant who goes around solving seemingly impossible murders

6:28 PM
UK programs are great
better than US anyway

@3ventic Stylish

It's pretty clever
there weren't many of them though
and because it's a UK TV series, the season lengths are like 6-8 episodes

@3ventic I'm pretty sure if you say that, you have to call them "programmes"

that's pretty much the only good thing about American TV
when they commit to a series they go all out with like 22 episodes

@Sterno I guess I should

6:30 PM
@kalina Occasionally US shows have half seasons, usually if it's a mid-season replacement, but that's kinda rare.

@Powerlord yeah but UK TV series are always super short
I guess it's a budget thing
maybe...

@kalina So I've noticed. :|

@Powerlord it's getting increasingly and annoyingly common.

UK TV series are usually higher quality than American equivalents too

Breaking Bad should have had 22 episode seasons so that they could have twice as many long breakfast scenes.

6:31 PM
Oh hey, I didn't notice that they finally aired the last episode of The IT Crowd.

@Powerlord old news
It was a pretty decent episode too
@3ventic also, Hustle
It's not a mystery show though

@kalina I'll have to look for it after work.

it's a drama about a group of con artists and how they rip people off
still a pretty clever show
also british

FAE
@kalina From what I've read, UK tv series are purposefully short that way because they prefer quality over quantity and they also don't want to burn their actors out doing stupid filler eps for artificially lengthened seasons.

@FAE UK shows do tend to be of a much higher quality
the successful ones anyway

6:33 PM
Hey, anyone here know about iTunes gift codes?

but 6-8 episodes per season isn't enough
Like, Hustle for example
8 seasons
less episodes than 2 seasons of NCIS

I have one, for a game, except my device is at home and I won't be able to access it in a few weeks.

@kalina Or Sherlock, with 3 episodes

FAE
@kalina I find them denser, in a good way. Though British comedy is very hit or miss for me, so I tend to prefer dramas or comedy/dramas (I enjoyed Misfits, for example, up through season 4 anyway).

@ManishEarth why not install itunes, associate it with your itunes account, redeem, etc

6:34 PM
Do they expire?

@ManishEarth if they do it will likely have a date on the voucher

@kalina Ok, and from then on I can download the game from any of my associated ios devices?

@ManishEarth You can't login and activate it online?

@ManishEarth to the best of my knowledge, yes

I'll take 44 episodes of Elementary in the time it takes them to make 6 of Sherlock.

6:35 PM
Or is the link one-time use only?

you need to authenticate the computer you're on to itunes though
is the computer you're using one of yours? Like a laptop or w/e?

@RedRiderX Haven't tried, was afraid to
will try
@kalina yes

See if you had an Android device, you'd just do it and it would download it to your device at home for you automatically

heh
I do have an android device

@ManishEarth well it should already be one of your authorised devices then

6:37 PM
@kalina never installed itunes on it, I use it when I'm in the institute and I rarely bring the ipad with me
doing so now

mk, well you know which option I mean right?

Yeah

as long as you do that first you shouldn't have a problem, since that's how itunes does drm

Redeem it with my iTunes, and then go home and the App store should not ask me for moolah when I open it on the ipad
Right?
@kalina thought so, but didn't want to lock myself out unnecessarily :)

either that or plug your iWhatever into your laptop and install it using iTunes on the laptop

6:39 PM
@kalina That's because shows in the UK know when to end.
Instead of milking all the life out of it.
I'M LOOKING AT YOU US VERSION OF THE OFFICE

If you're unsure though, you should be able to find information about expiry on the voucher

@kalina There is none

@OrigamiRobot oh, and then there's Americans trying to re-create British humour
before realising that Americans don't actually have a sense of humour
cough, IT Crowd/Office/EVERYTHINGELSE

Anyway, I trust you (ha!), and this agrees with what I had in mind, so I'm doing it :)

No, we have humor.

6:40 PM
@OrigamiRobot that "u" makes all of the difference.
@ManishEarth hah! Trusting me... I feel so special

@kalina Thank god the US version of the IT Crowd didn't make it.

also, disclaimer: I am not responsible if it doesn't work

@kalina yes you are

nuh uhh

The trap is sprung! :P
yuh huh

6:41 PM
blame Simon
or Adnan

that works

or @Wipqozn

Simon, he's Canadian, so close enough

GENERAL DISCLAIMER: If I'm wrong, it's not my fault. It's @Wipqozn's
7

@kalina too many consonants

6:41 PM
@ManishEarth true, if you blame Simon, you'll get an apology!

I don't consider "soary" to be an apology

@Unionhawk It's good to get it out there in advance.

@ManishEarth "won't happen again, eh"

TODAY'S ENTRY FOR "WORDS I HAD TO USE FOR WORK" IS: DISCHARGE

@OrigamiRobot what's wrong with this word?

6:43 PM
@RedRiderX I thought that was assumed, but apparently not

Nothing. It's totally for work.

@Unionhawk Apparently.

I'm keeping that one to quote later.

Until the UK makes something better than Firefly, the US is winning.

@Sterno DW

6:47 PM
@RedRiderX No

@Sterno :P

rests his case

@Sterno technically, the American public rejected Firefly and are directly responsible for it being cancelled, so I don't think you get to keep that one

I love Doctor Who, but it is not better than Firefly.

@kalina I didn't say Americans aren't stupid.

6:48 PM
The American public are responsible for preventing Firefly from becoming the greatest sci fi show of all time
and while I don't like Doctor Who, there are way more Doctor Who fans than browncoats

@Sterno You judge the merit of a series only by its low points?

And until the UK creates something better, even in an abbreviated form that's also cancelled, the US is winning

@kalina Airing the episodes out of order and in irregular intervals might also had something to do with it

@RedRiderX It has a lot of low points.

@Sterno It's been 50 years (sort of).

6:49 PM
I do hope that one day there is a series 2
although I read something the other day about series 2 being released in comic format
...fuck comics

The main problem I have with Firefly is finding a way to watch it.

11 mins ago, by OrigamiRobot
@kalina That's because shows in the UK know when to end.
Direct contradiction!

@RedRiderX torrents
@Sterno technically, Doctor Who has ended multiple times

@kalina The main problem I have with Firefly is finding a legal way to watch it.

"Doctor Who" as it is today, is not the same as the previous incarnations of the show called "Doctor Who"
@RedRiderX who cares about legality, torrent it

6:51 PM
@kalina Very true.

I don't hate Doctor Who but I think it gets way more love than it deserves.

@Sterno well, you know my opinion on Doctor Who

@kalina I don't, actually.

@kalina I will avoid a public confirmation or denial of this statement.

@Sterno oh, ok

6:51 PM
@Sterno She loves it.
That's the law in the UK.

I don't
I think it's stupid
The fact it had Billie in the first seasons was stupid
The Doctor dying and turning into another actor is stupid
The TARDIS is stupid

Disliking DW in the UK is like disliking KD in Canada.

Doctor Who isn't the best, but it's the only British show that I remotely like.

It's got some of the laziest, half-assed writing I've ever seen, and fans always explain it away with "It's not supposed to make sense! You're missing the point! It's all about the characters!"

@Ullallulloo Spaced.

6:52 PM
@OrigamiRobot I love Kraft Dinner

@OrigamiRobot Very much so.

@OrigamiRobot Never heard of it.

@OrigamiRobot 10/10, would watch again

And I don't really like KD.

Spaced is a British television sitcom written by and starring Jessica Stevenson and Simon Pegg, and directed by Edgar Wright. Two series of seven episodes each were broadcast in 1999 and 2001 on Channel 4. They were re-aired early in 2011 on both More4 and Dave and have been broadcast on 4Music. Plot Daisy Steiner (Jessica Stevenson) and Tim Bisley (Simon Pegg) are two London twenty-somethings who meet by chance in a café while both are flat-hunting. Despite barely knowing each other, they conspire to pose as a young professional couple in order to meet the requisites of an advertisement...

6:53 PM
@Ullallulloo Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Edgar Wright, Jessica Stevenson, before they were all famous

Is Kraft Dinner the same thing in the US as a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese? Or is it something more elaborate?

@kalina "Colin! Get her!" woof

@kalina I don't know if I've heard of any of those people.

Spaced is the precursor to Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz/The World's End

@Sterno Same thing.

6:54 PM
@Ullallulloo what?

Maybe Pegg, but I don't remember liking him or anything.

@Ullallulloo WHAT?

@Ullallulloo is dead to me.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is a British dark comedy show made for Channel 4 by Matthew Holness and Richard Ayoade. Following on from Garth Marenghi's Netherhead, which won the 2001 Perrier Awards, the show revolves around fictional horror author Garth Marenghi (played by Holness) and his publisher Dean Learner (played by Ayoade). Darkplace is presented as a lost classic: a television series produced in the 1980s, though never broadcast at the time. The presentation features commentary from many of the "original" cast, where characters such as "Marenghi" and "Learner" reflect on making th...

@Ullallulloo WHAT?

6:54 PM
That reminds me, I need to watch that new Pegg movie

@Ullallulloo If you have never seen Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, or The World's End, you need to watch them - in that order

Yeah, no never seen him before.

FAE
@OrigamiRobot Spaced is awesome.

And you need to watch Spaced
You should watch Spaced first
due to the running gags through all of their work

FAE
It took me a few episodes to warm up to, like with most British shows, but I ended up really liking it.

6:55 PM
XSEED Games Announces SENRAN KAGURA Burst to Release November 14 Exclusively for Nintendo 3DS http://goo.gl/Du4eSu

I liked it immediately.

why would you not announce a release date until a week before release

@RedRiderX I own the DVD set, hah!

@BenBrocka Could be worse. Could have been the Sega Saturn launch whose E3 release date announcement was "In stores today!"

@FEichinger Loan it to me then. :P

6:56 PM
To which Sony replied "$299"
(Saturn was $399)

@RedRiderX No way, I'd never get it back! :P

I'm mixed on IT Crowd. I've seen series 1 & 2. Some bits of it are pretty funny, followed by long periods of unfunny.

@FEichinger Aww.

All this talk about Doctor Who, TV shows, syfy, etc., and none of you mentioned Torchwood?

@Powerlord Read an article about that, that must have been a scary time to work at Sega

6:57 PM
@Fluttershy Torchwood was weird ...

...TBH I'm not sure when it hasn't been a scary time to work at Sega, except in the hayday of the genesis

@Fluttershy did you just say 'syfy' in an actual sentence?

@Fluttershy I figured I already listed enough shows that were awful.

@Fluttershy I've only seen a few episodes.

@FEichinger Torchwood was awesome!

6:57 PM
@Fluttershy My main problem with Torchwood is finding a legal way to watch it.

@kalina Also, this.

Jack Harkness!

And it being kind of odd.

@Fluttershy Meh. Never liked it all that much.

If I want to watch weird softporn, I'll subscribe to Cinemax
3

6:58 PM
The Sarah Jane Adventures!

And yes. I said syfy. Because it is dumb and it makes people grumpy.

@Powerlord That must have felt good too

Skip to the end... time to watch Spaced again!

That K9 show!

@3ventic to your earlier "what tv shows should I watch" conversation - Spaced

6:59 PM
@kalina I support this decision.
No Heroics is a British superhero-comedy television series, which began on 18 September 2008. The show is ITV2's first original sitcom. It was nominated for Best New British TV Comedy of 2008 at the British Comedy Awards. Setting No Heroics is set in modern-day Britain, in a world similar to ours but "With one small difference: there are superheroes." The superheroes of the world (colloquially referred to as "capes") are primarily modelled after those of the Golden Age of Comic Books, usually clad in brightly coloured outfits consisting of skin-tight materials such as Lycra or spandex....
