3:00 PM
@fredley Wtf, seriously?

@SaintWacko Yes
It's not even a contract, you just pay month by month

How's coverage and speed?

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Pretty good.

@fredley Wow, that's annoying
I bet your internet is faster, too

@SaintWacko It is if you pay for fibre

3:04 PM
@fredley How much is fibre there?

Q: What is the maximum number of countries that can leave the XCOM project at the end of the month?

Jason BerkanAnd does it change based on the difficulty level? In my last game on Normal difficulty, I had six countries at maximum panic (5/5) at the end of the month, but only two decided to leave the project. Is that a fixed number? Would all six countries have left if I was playing on Classic or Imposs...

Q: How does climbing ledges via the ropes work?

Ben BrockaI'm still having some issues with the new Ninja Rope physics. My biggest problem is I can't seem to reliably climb up over a ledge. According to the tutorial you just hold right/left in the direction of the ledge. This sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, and the worm seems to take a widely var...

Q: My Little Sister is dead, should I get a new one or start over?

DavRob60's Holiday Season UserIn the level Proving Grounds, you have to follow a Little Sister as she opens doors for you. Mine just got killed near the end, Tenenbaum told me I could get a new one, but also state that one lost is already too much. I systematically saved every Little Sister instead of harvesting them until ...

WTF are my neighbours doing? I'm not usually here during normal business hours, so maybe they think I'm at work and feel they can make as much noise as they want.

@SaintWacko From about £10 more than a standard Broadband package

@fredley If it's in your area. sigh

@fredley Hm, I don't even know how much it costs here
There aren't many fibre networks
Because the telecom companies are cheap bastards
3

3:09 PM
@SaintWacko Monopolies will do that to a corporation

Oligopolies, actually. Although in some areas they might be monopolies if the others can't get coverage in the area.

@SaintWacko We have one cable provider here and they suck (their $20 a month internet is actually $60 a month)
I want Google Fiber to wreck their shit and I want it to happen now

LOL

Well, the "free" plan certainly seems like an interesting business strategy

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Google gains in the long run through ads. More people online, more google earns

3:13 PM
I don't think offering free internet is going to give them enough additional advertising revenue to offset the costs. Hopefully they aren't going to turn into AOL

They're also being somewhat philanthropic with it too

@YiJiang'sEvilClone They had to lay the lines anyway, they're probably hoping for a chunk of upsells too
Considering their set up a few people on 10Mbps is probably a minor cost to them anyway, the big cost is in the set up, which is a sunk cost anyway

the intent is to get the poorer neighbourhoods connected which is good for everyone.
@BenBrocka And I think you still have to pay the connection cost ($300 IIRC) for the free tier

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Google isn't likely to turn into AOL, they have more than enough money to have a few of these projects (a lot of them actually) fail, more or less regardless of cost. That's why they experiment
@MBraedley Yeah, you do

@MBraedley Yup, and they guarantee you at least 2 years of free internet
$300 / 24 per month is still very cheap internet

3:16 PM
Which is still cheaper than most other options out there, especially long-term

The real problem with Google Fiber is that most websites are not ready to serve you any faster internets than most people already get

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Yeah, I pay over twice that per year
@badp Eh, yes they are, at least most popular websites

@RonanForman You have Rocksmith for PC?

@OrigamiRobot Yeah.

There's a huge difference between "most websites" and "websites most people use"

3:18 PM
@BenBrocka The overall speedup between having a 1 MB/s down link and a 14 MB/s down link is only noticeable the rather rare times you do bulk downloads. Steam, Humble Bundle, Ubuntu...

@RonanForman How is it?

Facebook, Google, Youtube and Netflix have plenty of tubes
@badp No it totally is

@BenBrocka I have lived six months on 14 MB/s (peak) and... it's not that life changing.

@OrigamiRobot Pretty good, although I can already play guitar, so I don't know how good it is at the actual teaching part.

I don't understand why YouTube ever fails to load videos for me.
It pisses me off when that happens.

3:19 PM
Rendering times down from seconds to miliseconds is extremely noticable and that's about the difference you get

If I can get 3MB/s down from Steam, then YouTube should never lag.
But it does.

@StrixVaria but YouTube already throttles downloads so that your maximum speed doesn't matter

@RonanForman Yea, I'd be learning. The response and detection is good though?

You get a speed peak at the start then roughly the video throughput for the rest

@badp Torrents should be able to saturate even a 1Gbps link very quickly
Does Steam use p2p to distribute it's downloads?

3:20 PM
No it's client server

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I don't think so.

@OrigamiRobot Yeah, the only experience with learning was when my Dad tried it, but I should test it with someone who has half way decent hand eye coordination.

@badp Apparently sometimes they throttle it to slower than the bandwidth needed to continue streaming.

Which I've found because sometimes the servers aren't availible

@StrixVaria Yeah, I imagine they use heuristics that aren't perfect

3:21 PM
YouTube is one of the least reliable video streaming services. The only reason I still use it is because it's also the most ubiquitous.

@StrixVaria I think it sometimes just hiccups. And it definitely fails if you leave a window open too long or let your computer sleep, I always have to refresh the page when that happens

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Well, I can't remember if I did try those a lot (it's been a year now) but... you're limited by the upload speed, which is everybody else's download speed. It's certainly better, but not as grandiose as the improvement in your own upload speed

Jesus Christ that Paper Mario question has attracted some completely idiotic answers...

@BenBrocka Yeah I'm not talking about the idling issues. That's fine.

@StrixVaria Youtube's other features make it way worth it. Especially as a creator...

3:22 PM
That's where Google Fiber really ought to be life changing: upload speeds.
Youtube, for example. Uploaded several gigabytes' worth of video in a day.

Plus it's one of precious few video serving sites I trust to be around and not die due to massive infrastructure/rights/legal/etc costs

Dunno what the real peak speed was, but it was significantly more than what I have here.

@badp Yeah, upload is the killer for me. Waiting hours to upload a video that takes minutes to process...ugh

I have, uh, shitty kB/s. Don't even know. 128? Maybe?

@BenBrocka GRAVITY RUSH IS SO MUCH FUN! I haven't geeked out about a game like this in a while. <_<

3:23 PM
@BenBrocka eh, processing speed isn't affected by your pipes.

YouTube has advantages, sure. It just needs to fix that stupid shit where I can't watch a video on my future connection for no good reason.

if you have 14Mbps down it's proably somewhere around 1.5 down

@StrixVaria Protip: Youtube for Android preloads videos in your watch later and subscription box.

@badp That's what I'm saying, uploading is a massive bottleneck for me

@badp I would rather not have to watch videos on my phone.

3:25 PM
@BenBrocka Yeah - upload speed is a massive improvement, hands fucking down.

Where'd my hypnostaff go? I need to use it on @Fluttershy to redirect to TF2.

@StrixVaria I have a Nexus 7 :)

@badp o/

It's gotten to the point where I leave my computer to watch videos on my tablet.

LOOK AT @BADP WITH HIS TABLET HE IS SO FANCY

3:26 PM
@Fluttershy Yeah. Protip: do the challenges, you'll get a lot more upgrades early. I ignored them and I have a bunch of upgrades missing at the end of the game

@OrigamiRobot Thanks for summing up the biggest problem of owning a tablet in one line.

I still do not own any form of smart anything. my phone is a prepaid nokia.

@badp Is it really that uncommon to own a tablet any more?

@Ender My phone is a Samsung whatever that can barely run Opera Mini 4, but it's got a four day battery life and that's more amazing than I recalled.

sounds good to me

3:28 PM
@badp I have Nexii 4 & 7.

I remember not charging my phone for a week. Which was offset by the fact that I never used the stupid piece of crap

4 isn't even being sold in Italy anyway.

Now I use it constantly but it only lasts a day, fair trade off

ive never owned an i-- ANYTHING, never an android, any form of tablet or pad. nothing. the most tecnically advanced gadget ive ever owned was my kindle (The standard kind) that my wife bought me when i was deployed

@fredley how's the 7? I'm thinking of destroying selling my iPad and getting a nexus 7 or 10, mostly just to be rid of my only Apple product

3:29 PM
@badp It's being sold on the internet

i just dont see why i shoudl dump a few hundred bucks so my phone does stuff my computer already does

@BenBrocka I'm doing the challenges. I can't get better than silver, but I'm doing them! <_<

@BenBrocka Wonderful, I love it

But I'm also rather meh on tablets in general now that I have a good smartphone

@Ender I only have a smartphone because you can't get a decent non-smartphone anymore.

3:29 PM
@fredley Nope! Google doesn't sell it themselves in Italy and LG has no interest in selling the Nexus 4 themselves at that price point.

@Ender Do you carry your computer everywhere you go?

@Fluttershy Yeah they seemed to have balanced gold really well that it's quite hard to get

So yeah, no Nexus 4 in Italy unless you import one from Germany or whatever.

@Jason no but there is nothing my computer does that I need it to do at any given moment anywhere i go

@JasonBerkan I don't know about you but I have a special backpack to carry around my 40lbs PC and a monitor with me

3:30 PM
For reference, the first-gen iPhone also never sold in Italy. shrug

@OrigamiRobot when I finally own one that will be the reason

@Ender I'm too much of a tech geek. The fact that I have a computer on my person at all times makes me ridiculously happy.

@Ender I accidentally washed my old phone, so the decision was made for me.

@badp even for that you'll have to wait for them to come in stock. Google should have ordered like 10x as many as they did. Or more

@JasonBerkan if I had retarded amounts of money to blow, Id have all the toys, but Financially I just cant see a good WHY

3:31 PM
@Ender My use case is train commutes and weeks long periods of relying on mobile internets exclusively.
Load up on things on home wifi, consume them elsewhere.

@badp in the business world it make much more sense

Also a passable digital camera so I never ever have to buy/carry a separate camera ever again

@Ender True. I had to make due with an iPod touch that my wife bought with Airmiles until we saved up enough to buy an iPhone - and I can guarantee that it will have to last me 5+ years before I can buy another one.

@Ender Text entry means it's very difficult to get shit done with a tablet.

@badp ^This. Not the train commutes, but the weeks long periods with only mobile internet.

3:32 PM
@badp swype all the things. It's not perfect but it's pretty damn awesome

@badp text entry?

@BenBrocka It's still no match with a fucking keyboard. :)

@JasonBerkan But, but, it's an iPhone. I thought part of the contract was buying a new one every year? :P

Are you saying you cant touchpad mouse it?

@OrigamiRobot Only if you are an Apple fanboy.

3:33 PM
@Ender You can apply pressure with "any" amount of fingers and that's your only input

Oh, chat.
I told it to load older messages.
So, it loads ONE message.

...oh there's the microphone too.

@badp that seems like it could be amazing but is probably all but worthless

Now write, or dictate, a ten page report. Go!

There are people who own Apple products who aren't Apple fanboys? Like, they own one by choice? It wasn't given to them?

3:34 PM
@fbueckert pluralization bug

@OrigamiRobot We gave my father a first-gen iPad, he just grew into an Apple fanboy. It just does things to your mind.

@OrigamiRobot Is that really so odd?
Wait, you said Apple not Bacon.

First thing he tried to do on my nexus 7 is the super-impractical four-finger pinch to go back to the homescreen.

@OrigamiRobot I reluctantly have an iPad 3 since I find it nice to have access to the latest "things" in interaction. However I've never bothered to get a windows phone or mac PC

I wanted to facepalm rather badly.

3:36 PM
@BenBrocka Swype is amazing. It's what finally convinced me to stop using my Treo and get a newer phone

@OrigamiRobot It's rare.

@badp I didn't even think the first gen had multitasking gestures

@BenBrocka Software updates.

@OrigamiRobot I've got a second gen iPod touch, I've had it for like 5 years and am only just thinking of replacing it.

Software updates for the first gen iPad have reached end of line on iOS 4.whatever (= not iOS 5)

3:37 PM
I do prefer the 4 finger pinch to the home button on the iPad, but I prefer the Android method of just keeping the buttons accessible regardless of orientation

Q: Term for "vertical looking angle" in FPSs?

Protector oneI guess the "vertical angle" of looking in an FPS could be called the pitch of the camera, but surely there is another term for it. (I'm trying to mod ArmA II, but I can't find anything in their documentation and forums about the camera pitch or whatnot. The ArmA people call the horizontal angle ...

Q: What are all the costumes?

Ben BrockaI've beaten the main game and I still only have Kat's normal outfit and the schoolgirl outfit. I know that there's a couple DLCs which bring their own outfits, but since they introduced changing clothes in the main game, I assumed there would be more outfits. Are there more outfits in the main g...

@BenBrocka I rather appreciate the four finger pan to the extremely awkward alternative.
but still ... four finger jestures? really?

@Lazers Game Dev?

@badp Oh, the double tap the home button to bring up the other thingy? Yeah, that's preferable
I prefer Android's Recents, which surprised me...I initially questioned the usefulness of that button

@BenBrocka It's not bad, but I have to keep clearing that list of apps I don't want.

3:39 PM
@BenBrocka You mean the third button with the two overlapping squares?

@badp Yes

@badp yeah that's Recents

> but since they introduced changing clothes in the main game

Yeah, that's much more practical.

You will NEVER win! TF2 has a several year head-start on that feature!

3:40 PM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone That's actually a neat feature of it; it's muuuuch easier to close apps if you're paranoid about battery life/network stuff/etc. I love the swipe to remove gesture

Also some people have complained about Android's back arrow being inconsistent for intra- and inter-app navigation, but... eh. Never bothered me too much. I actually don't use that arrow enough
@BenBrocka Does that swipe actually close an app? I thought not

The arrow is much improved but it's still a bit iffy. Much improved since they released offical design docs though

I mean, there's probably a difference between swiping an app off and long-pressing it, picking 'app info' and then 'force stop' and then confirming.

I usually just swipe and assume that kills the app completely

@badp Yes, unless the app runs a service (like Steam Mobile). It definitely closes normal apps like games

3:42 PM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone People assume that about the recent apps list of the iPhone too. People are wrong.

@badp There should be a six fingered gesture that makes 'you killed my father; prepare to die.' display on the screen.

Stuff like always-on chat apps seem to need extra closing though

@GnomeSlice or just two middle fingers swiping up.

@badp whoosh

@badp I thought that does it too. It works to kill a broken app
Which funny enough I get way more broken/crashed apps on my iPad than I ever have on Android. And less consistently

3:43 PM
I dunno, I've seen some people get really worked up about that list and removing items off it.

Have you tried Google Now much? It's actually kinda neat
I've used it for more than verbal abuse which is more than I can say for poor Siri

It's kinda not awesome, maybe it's Italian, maybe it's Italy
All cards I've ever seen are weather, soccer and flights - but only after I googled the flight code

Oh right you and your not english words speaking

even though it's got access to my GMail account.

Anything voice-based you can pretty well assume is very dependent on the language

3:45 PM
Oh appointments too.

And English is usually the top priority for anything global/starting in the US

@BenBrocka I didn't actually use the voice search much, does it accept commands too?

Google Now would be really neat if it wasn't so dependent on network

@badp you have to enable them. The shipping info ones are sweet
Time-to-home is a nice one as well, though it shows it excessively for me

@BenBrocka I'd need to have something ship to me first.
@BenBrocka I commute by train on non-Google-Maps-supported services so that's not relevant to me :(

3:47 PM
@badp Not sure, I assume it's tied to other google services but I mostly use it for search

The one time Google actually correctly inferred that a Maps search was somewhere I needed to go, it was rather disappointing to discover that in addition to the GPS, Google Now also needed to be constantly connected to give me estimates of arrival times

Woo! Wadda y'all think:

Who needs to have Google Maps integration when you can have muoversi.regione.lombardia.it/planner
facedesk

@badp The only trains around here are for cargo

it's like the Dutch 9292.nl except infinitely worse and only for the local neighbourhood except not even that much :(

3:50 PM
9292's site is awesome

@badp Here the local bus companies don't have open APIs for the bus' arrival times
Google somehow still have that data for their maps though

@YiJiang'sEvilClone You don't even need to have open APIs for you to be on Google Maps. argh

@MBraedley I can't tell what you're doing on the orbital map parts.

@BenBrocka Commuting by train is awesome. Instead of screaming at traffic you just scream at trains leaving early, then you board on the train and do your thing.

Speaking of Google, it's against the new Android SDK license to develop Android apps using your smartphone.

3:51 PM
@Powerlord Wait really?

@Powerlord That makes perfect sense. No, wait a second.

@GnomeSlice That's why you also have to look at the nav ball and throttle.

@Powerlord Well that's unfortunate. I think there is at least one fairly full featured Java IDE on the market right now

@YiJiang'sEvilClone What Google needs is a folder with directory listing turned on and a bunch of files.

@MBraedley When you said 'set your target' it was gone in less than a second.

3:52 PM
Blah, the part I want to quote is too long

> With an Android-powered device, you can develop and debug your Android applications just as you would on the emulator. Before you can start, there are just a few things to do:

> 3.3 You may not use the SDK for any purpose not expressly permitted by this License Agreement. Except to the extent required by applicable third party licenses, you may not: (a) copy (except for backup purposes), modify, adapt, redistribute, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, or create derivative works of the SDK or any part of the SDK

The bunch of files have all info about stops, lines and times and they can be static.

> ; or (b) load any part of the SDK onto a mobile handset or any other hardware device except a personal computer, combine any part of the SDK with other software, or distribute any software or device incorporating a part of the SDK.

Their documentation site still encourages you to do it...

3:52 PM
@GnomeSlice Yeah, maybe I should have slowed the video down a touch for that part. It's just setting the target. That's all.

So, you can't load the SDK onto a mobile handset any more.
Rumor has it that it's to kill the AIDE project.

Oh, the SDK itself? Oh, why would you even do that? You can still send your debug code direct to the device right?

@MBraedley WHOA HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS

@BenBrocka I just linked to why you would... there's an Android IDE available for Android devices.

@OrigamiRobot I have an iPhone and I'm not an Apple fanboy. I like my phone well enough, but I'd never purchase an iPad or MacBook or any of that other garbage. I'd probably just buy a car instead...

3:56 PM
@Fluttershy I won't ever get an iDevice, because iTunes is terrible

@Powerlord It appears that's nothing new

@LessPop_MoreFizz Was that comment directed at me? <_< Or at the guy who posted the answer?

I really do hope Apple has been working to dismantle iTunes

@MBraedley You ended the video just before the money shot!

It's so un-Apple-y of them to have a fucking kitchen sink

3:58 PM
@Powerlord TIL

@MBraedley you didn't even use the docking HUD

@GnomeSlice No, I prefer not to

@YiJiang'sEvilClone You don't need to use iTunes for any of the modern devices (well - I guess just to backup your phone / pod).

@MBraedley I meant how are you getting near your ship.
