My barracks has 33 soldiers in it. They're all heavies and snipers. I keep talking new assault and supports out and they have a habit of dying. It's very sad

Every time I start Civ V with Germany and with earth as the terrain, it doesn't start me in central Europe where modern day Germany is. Can I correct this somehow? Civ 4 would automatically start the chosen civilization where it is (or would be) located on earth.
Every time I've entered WvW I've been hopelessly lost and confused. I read all the tutorials and listened to all the NPCs and read the wiki articles but I've no idea where I'm actually supposed to start.

@SaintWacko I've heard that almost all of the annoying things (down to the clunky UI) remain, though less people die and the terror missions are less ridiculously insanely difficult

I have a character with 8 missions and 6 kills, and still she is a rookie. Some seem to get promoted, while others get sent on missions, make kills, and yet stay as rookies. Is this a bug, or is there something else controlling how soldiers get promoted? I am playing on Classic difficulty.
The main factor when it comes to promotions seems to be the number of aliens a soldier has killed. Does it matter what kind of alien is killed? Does a strong alien give more experience than a weak one, or are all aliens equal?
Well, the idea was more about the perceived difference - which side of the USA is "nicer" for people outside of it? Which has better PR? :D Also, the question needs at least "I don't care, any coast would be fine" and "I hate the sea" answers.
