@ArdaXi I am those people; I am the innovator. this is not a justification for piracy or whatever, this is my attitude towards counter-piracy efforts.

Again, you're confusing piracy with commercial copyright infringement.

if I waste a month of my time trying to prevent something that is inevitable, my product is a month late or a month less invested in.

I'm not talking about prevention.
What I create will get copied, sure.
But my recourse is not to "suck up and deal", my recourse is to send them a DMCA notice.

no, I understand the differences. I also know that commercial exploitation of my work product is pretty much the same thing. I can't fight them, they've got the money and the power. all I've got is my ideas. Gotta have a new one every day

@agent86 Your perspective on life sucks.
It's a really, really defeatist attitude.

8:01 PM
I have two enemies, one is legion and doing it on their free time, and the other is legion and heavily funded. I can't fight either.

If what you were saying is true, there would be no indie developers.

Like I say, I don't feel defeated, I feel liberated.

Q: Can I carry things inside of monsters?

IAdapterbased on this answer http://gaming.stackexchange.com/a/41686/5624 I wonder - can I kill .... a rat, put all my things inside of him and just push him to nearest city(without slowing down) then extract my stuff and sell them?

knowing what battles can be fought and won is an important part of winning.

@agent86 Then your attitude sucks and your capability of cognitive dissonance is incredible.
@agent86 I know for a fact that battles you've given up on can be won.

8:02 PM
you're attacking me instead of my argument, so I guess I won :)

@agent86 I'm attacking both.
My first message is fallacious, the second isn't.

But the argument is about your attitude, he can't not attack you.

Ad hominem doesn't work the way you think it does.
Ad hominem is "What you're saying is wrong because you're dumb."

that pretty much sounds like what you said :)

No, it isn't.
I said "Your attitude sucks because your attitude sucks."

8:04 PM
I don't think everyone feels the way I do... trying to put this in some other words...

Tautological, but logically it's correct.

@ArdaXi Hah, you remembered that word!

@GraceNote Remember?

Also you're not on your own, there are people who you don't need to pay that fight for you as their job.

major corporations like apple and amazon can patent stupid things, things that shouldn't be patented. things like gestures on a smartphone or "one click ordering" that (usually) have been around forever. If that was my idea, as a lone innovator, I have no recourse.
I could try to take them to court and spend years with the EFF on my side, and maybe I'd win. maybe.

8:06 PM
@GraceNote Oh, logical tautology. I was still referring to rhetorical tautology, but I guess both apply.

but those are years where I could be thinking up something new and cool.

@agent86 Err... a simple DMCA will do in most cases.
I agree with you on patents, but not on copyright.

@agent86 I see, you're talking about the stupid patents.

works for copyrights too though, if they copied my content outright, then I can DMCA them, perhaps. if they just copied the idea behind my program, I can't dmca them for "putting together a bundle like the indie bundle I put together"

@agent86 That's for them and their ISP to decide.
But you were also generalizing your ideas to any kind of creative work.

8:08 PM
@ArdaXi ...so we continue to be on different wavelengths, we just occasionally overlap.

I'm speaking about ideas. Exact duplication of content, yes, there's a method in place that was written to "protect" large content producers that occasionally helps smaller content producers.
but I would argue that most of the time it's possible to change content just enough to capture a market, even though it wasn't your idea to begin with.

@agent86 Look, I understand what your attitude comes from, and it doesn't work.

take something like... bejeweled. extremely popular game

The whole "big corporations are ruining the world!!!!!!!!!!!" mentality only gets you so far.
It doesn't apply here.

it's a clone of another game, and it's been cloned extensively.
you can't sue popcap for stealing the game idea from another game, and you can't sue the clones for stealing the stolen idea again
if bejeweled executes that puzzle game better than other games, it wins in the marketplace
but there's always a threat that someone will come along and do it better

8:11 PM
@agent86 I can't sue PopCap, no. If they copied my game, I could sue them, and they would probably settle.
In our legal system anyway.
I dislike the way our international legal system works, but I'm not going to argue in its favour.

the legal system is mainly a war of attrition more than who is right or wrong. I could fight that war, or I could use my resources elsewhere. I guess it's a "make love not war" thing to me. I'd rather do what I like and acknowledge that sometimes I'll have good ideas that get copied, rather than try to block everyone from gaining from my contributions.

@agent86 See, and I hate this defeatist attitude.
I'm very sorry, but all you do is whine about how much things suck and how good you are at ignoring how much they suck.

I'd rather open source a program and make $0 from it when it gets bundled by some company and sold, than try to outsmart, outwit, and outfight the internet legion and the billion dollar corporation

I'd much rather look at ways things can be improved than loudly proclaim how little I care about how bad things are.

I don't understand where you're getting this "defeated" thing

8:16 PM
@agent86 "I know for a fact that if someone decided to come along and sell something I made in blatant violation of whatever license I used, my recourse is to suck it up and deal"
"I could fight that war, or I could use my resources elsewhere."
That's defeatist.
It's not righteous.

@ArdaXi nope, it's just the US system that works that way.

@alexanderpas And there is no way to change the US system in any way ever?
(I'm actually asking because I don't really have faith in the US political system any more...)

@ArdaXi not for us. they have to do that themself.

I don't think meaningful change is likely to come during my lifetime; historically speaking this is the way it's been for thousands of years. I have it better than pretty much any other time in history. To me, this is a celebration, not a defeat.

(one day, they will crash and burn)

8:18 PM
if someone takes my idea and likes it enough to profit from it - I'd be elated

@agent86 "I don't think meaningful change is likely to come during my lifetime" <- If that isn't defeatist then honestly, I don't know what is.

I guess it's that I don't think I am entitled to be the only one who (or the majority owner of) profits from my ideas.

@ArdaXi the question here is, "still working to achieve it or not?"
@agent86 nope, they patent it, then profit from it.

if I was one of the first explorers of america, but colombus got the credit and all I got was a footnote in a history book, I'd be okay with that. I helped bring about change, and whether it was a large, heavily acknowledged part of that change, or just the slave shoveling the coal into the steam train of progress, that's okay by me.
people pay me money to play with technological toys for a living. I'm exceedingly, overwhelmingly blessed. They give me a paycheck every two weeks in exchange for some small part of my ideas, and I have to stop myself from laughing and saying SUCKERS!
when I go home at night, I do this for other people for free!
so I guess you could call me a defeatist; I must be the happiest loser in history :)

8:27 PM
@agent86 See, you have no right to speak here. You get paid either way.
What about the people who do rely on their content being bought in order to pay for their food?

@ArdaXi I'm also a person who produces ideas/content on my own time.

@agent86 Exactly.
In your spare time.
You don't rely on the proceeds to put food on the table.

you can draw a distinction if you want. When I didn't have a job I had the same outlook.

So you don't care about their jobs at all?

I care about their jobs. I'm not trying to say they need to have the same outlook as I do.
I did, in their shoes. They don't have to.
I think the world is big enough for everyone to have a different opinion. I won't assert that I'm correct, just that my outlook is one that I've given thought to and I'm comfortable with.

8:31 PM
@agent86 Where do you live? Utopia?

Some call it that; I just call it Texas ;)

Hrm

Global decisions have to be made.
There's only space for one opinion in international law.

It certainly sounds like you have enough indignation for both of us ;)

I'm realistic. You can't have people decide which version of a law to follow.
That doesn't mean the law is immutable though.

8:34 PM
I wish you the best of luck in your efforts to change it, and I sincerely hope that you are successful.

@agent86 I'm not talking about US law, of course. No way I'm going to (be able to) change that.

I do what I can to cause change to happen, I'm satisfied with my efforts and I think I'm the only one I have to please.

I do what I can to cause change to happen as well, but I always leave room for improvement.

improvement is important. I am an advocate of it. I also think it's a good idea to have ways to cope with your current situation, and find ways to work within the box you've been placed.
this has been a fun debate, I've enjoyed it :)

@agent86 That is definitely true.
What I disagree with is that you should be able to do both of those things.
Coping with your current situation should not mean you don't aim to change it.

8:42 PM
I think you're drawing an overly broad conclusion about my attitude, and that if you knew me better perhaps you'd have a different viewpoint on it. I otherwise agree with your statement.

@agent86 That's probably true. I mean, everyone is straw-manning to some extent, in any debate.

I see the situation advanced in the last 45 minutes since I was gone
for example, before my stomach was empty, and now it's full

@badp mmm, tasty progress

Indeed, indeed.

@agent86 break ALL of them!

@alexanderpas in this economy? I've got to be conservative with the emergency glass panel budget.

@NickT I'm not 100% sure of the utility of the tag in comparison to things like [molecular-biology] and the like. It's also on two questions. Methinks perhaps a Meta question on whether or not the disciplines should be tagged would be wise, if not just one saying why [biochemistry] needs to go.

Not relevant to the conversation at all. I just feel like posting this.

@GraceNote I wrote that meta post already. If the type of questions stays the same the tag is probably not needed, but if we really cover the whole of biology it certainly makes sense

@GraceNote So basically it's down to humans doing what they're supposed to do? I don't see any flaws in that plan whatsoever.
@TimStone I had the exact same problem.

@ArdaXi I figure that running a quick merge before the end of the day ought to do the trick
