@NickT I've come around on Weapons if only because it's existence helps our case for getting game tags as a special case/class.
Tags that mean something different across a variety of games, but which aren't meta tags are useless in the current environment, but are extremely useful when diving deep within a tag like skyrim - and would be more useful in general if we could just get Jeff to come around on Game Tags.
you obviously shouldn't use multiplayer tag in a question about your missle launcher. the gaming having multiplayer capability isn't a reason to include the tag.

The only good reason for something like minecraft-redstone is if there was some other use for the term redstone that took precedence (for example, a game of the same name.)
@DavidB Because the nature of our questions and our tagging scheme means we get a lot of tags that get used for one question and disappear. And if that tag wasn't used, there would be no tags for the question.
The alternative is to ban game-tags and/or require/enforce genre-tagging as our standard. But then, we end up with people quibbling and arguing over genre definitions and trying to complain about special snowflake games that cross genre boundaries etc.

I've come around, mainly on the premise that if we Do Tagging Right and use various topical, non-game tags better, we'll make a better case for getting Game Tags supported, which would fix a lot of the things that are broken about our tagging as a whole right now.
I don't know. While "strings" can and do vary a lot between languages, at the end of the day you can have questions that are just about strings: questions that ask for algorithms to manipulate them.
threads also have a whole literature of their own, most of which is language agnostic.
If we're going to have questions like "how to rearrange items in my deus-ex-alike inventory to free up the most space" then I can see the worth of such a tag (although, I've already had to specify what kind of inventory I'm talking about. That question makes no sense for Skyrim or Nethack or Link's Awakening.)
(Or a special purpose tag like the platform tags - which, in fact, are by definition meta tags according to their tag wikis at this point, which is a whole other ball of wax.)
UserStory: when I look at a skyrim question, I get there because of the game tag. Once there, I want to know if it's a system specific question (pc, xbox, ps3). Beyond that, I don't want much from tagging for that purpose.
@badp I'd argue that line belongs at the point at which you can have a usefully sized collection of questions with that tag about a particular game that you'd want to drill down to. But hyphenated subtags are poisonous because they either render the 'primary' tag irrelevant, or just add visual noise.
It really shouldn't matter that we have questions tagged weapons about both Skyrim and MW3. So long as looking at questions tagged with both Skyrim and Weapons turns up a useful result.

The end result is still Bethesda shooting themselves in the foot and gathering bad publicity. :)
@FallenAngelEyes Bethesda released a "patch" yesterday which didn't fix or change anything gameplay-related, but enforced the use of Steam to run the game (you could previously run it without).
The effect of it is that manipulating the game to use more than 2 GB of RAM doesn't work as easy as before, because Steam detects it and refuses to run. That means high-resolution texture replacers in general don't work properly, and some people on 64bit hardware in particular get random crashes every 20 minutes or so really.
There are fixes for the 2GB limit (patching in RAM after loading), but not for the added instability of running with Steam in the background.
