Q: Do we use abbreviations in genre names? [Completed]

MachaI know this has been asked about games, but what about genres? [rts] - 4 (one closed) - 0 [real-time-strategy] - 3 7 [tbs] - 0 [turn-based-strategy] - 8 [rpg] - 6 [mmorpg] - 6 Longer forms - 0 (leave alone as per answers) [first-person-shooter] - 1 18 [fps] - 18 0 For SEO purposes, the full ...

in the larger community framerate is synonymous with fps
so we have inconsistency regardless
using the term framerate is an alternative but inconsistent

I didn't realise consensus was already reached

This is a gaming site, lets assume that people here are gamers or want to learn

By that logic, old-games is also inconsistent because it isn't an acronym

how about gog as acronym ;)

4:02 PM
I think our only consistency is being inconsistent

good old game?

regardless, as @alexanderpas already pointed out we do have consensus on meta
it just has to be carried out

yes

what a nice dinner break, and a meta search afterwards can do to a heated discussion.

haha

4:06 PM
another reason why everything should be discussed on meta if you want to reach any kind of solution.

ooo, grace made another good point on the question about lists
alexander it was
we were having a theorhetical discussion on justification
Just because policy is one way or another doesn't mean it shouldn't change

I only saw the filibuster in the discussion

even that can be done on meta, by adding an new answer, or even making a new question

I'm just ashamed because I took part in that meta discussion and I didn't remember it :(

@alexanderpas it doesn't hurt for us to hash our ideas out there
and @Mechko I resent that accusation

4:09 PM
I hate to have to suggest overcomplicated answers :/

god damn, McKay must be trying to get the most edits humanly possible
@Arda don't feel bad, our site exists for expert answers, sometimes an expert answer is a complicated one

The problem is that he also often edits questions he has no expertise in
I really want to talk to him privately about that, I can hardly open a meta discussion as a giant ad hominem post

summon him to the chat, using the @ functionality (if possibly)

that's a bit difficult as well
only possible in comments or if he's already on a channel

comments might work.

4:14 PM
but where'd it be relevant
I can't comment on edits I've undone..
anyway, dinnertime

oh god I feel dirty guys
I just bought an ipad

yeah I did that yesterday

I can't work without keyboard. (or physical keys)

@ArdaXi comment in a question he edited and tell him to come find you in chat
you get used to the keyboard amazingly fast
I went from RIM to iPhone
it was shocking how quickly I got used to it
that said, iPhone is a PoS
never buy a phone from apple

@IvoFlipse at least you got something for the $500 that apple stole from you
Apple just took my money and pretended it never happened

4:23 PM
I've got a Milestone (EU Droid)

here is the problem with an iPhone, when it breaks (and it will) you can't call apple to tell them that your phone is broken...
I'm getting Droid X when they get back in stock

just know what you're getting, those devices are locked-up.
if you don't require keyboard, go for the more open devices.

I'm selling my ipad to my mom after I used it on my USA road-trip :P

Why do i get the feeling, a netbook would have suited you better?

I already own a laptop and a smartphone
and getting a smarter smartphone when the next batch of flagships comes out
I don't need a keyboard when I'm only consuming @alexanderpas
now if it were a netbook running android, I might be interested

4:29 PM
true.

but I find Windows plainly unusable on such a screen
but I plan to ditch the iPad and get an Android version once they finally get around making one...

Very important: don't leave your credit card linked to iTunes

ill link my moms :P
but why not?

I actually have a netbook and I don't like it
it has all the problems of a laptop
but worse

Windows is Hell on netbooks in my opinion, but Ubuntu (Netbook Edition) is very nice.

4:38 PM
Laptop keyboard too small. well this is smaller. Touchpad not sensitive enough, well this one is less sensitive. Screen hard to read, here is a smaller one.
I don't know Linux (even Ubuntu) driver support on those things is flaky at best

well the resolution sucks the most when the OS isn't adapted for it

unless you go with those build with linux in mind.

and Ubuntu is simply not an option
what the hell am I going to run on it?
other than a browser

hey now, let's not get down on Ubuntu
it has music players
and wine
and vlc

meeh

4:41 PM
what else do you use a laptop for?

if the hardware is capable of properly video at all
my laptop? 'work'

programming?

though I don't need it at the moment, so I use my desktop

office?

don't even dare suggesting Open Office :P

4:42 PM

I use open office on windows
all you have to do is remove Microsoft's dick from your mouth and its quite a pleasant experience

I'm actually a fan of the new Ribbon UI
so you won't get make back :P

OO.o runs perfect on my eeepc, and totally no driver problems anymore with the latest version.

hehe, Microsoft's dick is in my boss's mouth, not mine @tzenes :P

anyway, I should have left for work half an hour ago
so I got to run
:P

4:43 PM
bye :)

I even run Dwarf Fortress on my netbook!

hehe
does Starcraft 2 run on Ubuntu?

It doesn't run on the netbook hardware, so your point is moot.

@IvoFlipse Wine :)

I was aiming at the laptop @alexanderpas
it's probably unfair, but I tried playing WoW on my laptop three years ago
under Ubuntu with wine
got it working, but the nvidia drivers were uber crap

4:46 PM
three years ago Wine was a lot more unstable

I might give it another try some day

yes, it runs. GOLD appdb.winehq.org/…

but I never had a problem with having to use Windows, since I never had to pay for it

there is that

only after using Android, I seriously miss apps on other OSes
I know Chrome on Windows offers me nearly everything I want

4:48 PM
Chrome on linux is availble!

but it's more the 'single purpose' apps that look slick and most importantly are very easy to find

Ubuntu Sofware Center.

other than games, I guess you don't really need Windows anymore, no

I know about it, I might not USE Linux, but I do read tech news :P

4:50 PM
You only need windows for certain games.
Linux has SERIOUS improved over the last two/four years
I just hope so Valve is going to work together with Canonial and bring Steam to Ubuntu, and make us able to play all those SteamPlay games on Linux

5:10 PM
ditto that, I look forward to when I don't want to buy Windows

Q: How large are the planets in Star Wars: The Old Republic?

ChiCubedHow large are the planets in Bioware's Star Wars MMORPG? How do they compare to the continents in World of Warcraft?

I think that is unanswerable

You could messure them in time

btw: look at this google search result: starcraft 2 offline -beta
agreed unanswerable: not yet released, so probaly NDA

does anyone know if Wine for Windows is finished yet?
yes. that is a serious question

I know.

it'd be useful to run older applications on windows 7

5:18 PM
... without paying the microsoft tax, not to mention the next windows version.

Wine is a better solution than XP Mode either way

lol, LoL

5:46 PM
Evening all

Downvoter
what do you think about the "Logitech G5 Laser Mouse"?

Downvoter
I think I'll buy it

It's a mouse.

Downvoter
is it good?

Downvoter
5:50 PM
for gaming I mean

does a high end mouse really matter?

I've got some friends who recently got the Razer Naga, that thing is nuts
Personally I don't use a specific gaming mouse, I've been using the Logitech MX Revolution for the past 3 years and I'm happy with it.

Chris S
do you need it for a FPS

Downvoter
I don't know if it matter, I've always used a very low quality mouse

Downvoter
yes, fps

Chris S
5:53 PM
I just use an MS comfort mouse 3000

Well, you can almost never go wrong with Logitech. Normally I'm not one for brand loyalty, but I've never been unhappy with my Logitech products.

Chris S
but I'm not exactly paid to play

Q: How large are the planets in Star Wars: The Old Republic?

ChiCubedHow large are the planets in Bioware's Star Wars MMORPG? How do they compare to the continents in World of Warcraft?

I voted to close on that as well, incidentally.

I you want to adjust the weight and balance of your mouse, the G5 supports that, but it might respond too fast in games not supporting mouse sensitivity ajustment.

Chris S
A nice mouse matt and the steel series holder is a good idea if you haven't got them

5:54 PM
Ref @FallenAngelEyes Can we kill that please?

already voted.

Chris S
Is SWTOR going to be instanced like Conan

Completely subjective as is now, and will be too localized later, so... yeah

mouse mat is annoying.

I have a Steel Series mousemat, bought one last year, I'm quite happy with it

Q: Looking for an MMO which won't empty my wallet and suck out my life.

MechkoI'm looking for an MMO that is relatively cheap or has a single one-time fee/micro transactions which also doesn't run the risk of sucking up my life. To make the question less subjective, I am an addictive person, so if there is any potential to become obsessed with the game, you can be guarant...

Chris S
5:56 PM
I spelt it Matt duh

Also think that one should be closed per my comment I left

Chris S
It only has one real answer: Evony

PlaneShift is fair enough, I've played it once, but it felt more like a sandbox
not to mention that every time you die you have to travel through the underworld to the magic portal that resurrects you

RuneScape?

6:06 PM
free version kinda sucks compared to the full version

I don't know, I played the free version for a long time

runescape bores me.

plus the community isn't that great

but I get excited by mining/crafting, so I'm weird
@ArdaXi The community is less than excellent

I can get excited by mining/crafting too, if there are enough options.

6:10 PM
should try eve then
there's even the option of constant danger

Play Sacrifice
its a better game
go to steam, buy Sacrifice, spend $5, feel better about life

meh... played EVE, but the skill tree is just too big.

the problem I have with EVE is that its boring

also true.

Q: Any "fun" racing games similar to Big Red Racing?

DisgruntledGoatYears ago I played a great game called Big Red Racing. I really liked the fact you could play all sorts of tracks - off-road, snow, water, even on the Moon and Mars! I've played Mario Kart, which I guess fits into this category. I was wondering if there are any modern racing games in that vein o...

why is this still around?

6:25 PM
anyone complaining about me getting pizza?

6:37 PM
@cross ever since I got reduced to 12 votes its been harder to nail them all

just put them up here.

usually its other people putting them here and I have to say: sorry I'm out of votes

I still have 10 votes.

need one more for that one

who voted already?

6:43 PM
I did.

I did

I did (of course)

ping @ArdaXi

your opinion?

6:47 PM
done

thanks!

thanks

((this was funny))

((these are nested parentheses))

oh no! Scheme flashbacks!

((this is frightening to @CRoss))

7:07 PM
rep capped again today

congratulations!

Lol, congrats.

I suppose. I'd care more if I cared about rep, but mostly it makes it hard for me to tell who voted on what
I stop seeing nice things like: 90

404

7:09 PM
D:
never mind.

its because its your userid
I had to put in mine: 102
but its still not as easily parsable
interesting, selecting an answer gets around the daily repcap

yeah.

done on purpose, to encourage that behaviour.

7:25 PM
you mean an accepted answer @tzenes?

yes
accepting an answer

it's meant as an extra reward and can't be skewed by other people's voting habits
the 200 rep cap is just to rate-limit rep, since some answers can easily gather the entire rep cap in a day
so it keeps the rep more even between C# and less popular tags

more even ... being in a big tag still helps

more even indeed, since it prevents Jon Skeet from gaining 10k/day.

for example, tzenes has 133 questions in his domain, I have 60 in mine.
he has a lot more opportunity to get accepted answers and hit the rep cap daily

7:32 PM
which prevents him gaining rep, while you can still gain more

I can't answer Mac or Linux questions on SU
so I'm crippled too :P

if no one asks dwarf-fortress or team-fortress-2 I'm out of luck

and now I'm going to sleep, I can't answer anymore either

@alexanderpas only if I have questions I know the answer to (or can research)

BTW: how many hats are there is TF2? (too localized for the site probaly?)

7:34 PM
@C. Ross I've gotten over the initial learning curve, so I can't help you out as much anymore :P

cheater

/duck

@antonytrupe thanks for putting my rep where it is. I think we had a beneficial relationship.

haha

@alexanderpas A bunch, especially if you include all the specialty ones like the one for Alien Swarm

7:36 PM
There's a wiki that contains them all, sec

oh, sweet, new chat feature!

It's actually pretty old already :P

new is a relative term :-)

indeed, new chat feature, never noticed it!

Yeah, I never noticed it either.

7:39 PM
it should be one-click though, as such it's a bit annoying

Still, it should save me pinging a lot of people

oh, it does the same as pinging, didn't notice

nice!

8:06 PM
Also, you can't reply to the rss reader, disappointing

:65733 Yes you can

see.
nope, two won't work.

figured that out pretty quickly

nvm then

is there an easy way to reply to a specific chat message here? or are you all doing it manually

8:12 PM
click specific chat message arrow -> reply to this message

right, manually
I was hoping there was a quicker way

There should be a reply button implemented like the star button.

shouldn't be that difficult too make a greasemonkey script to insert a button in directly, but it'd be better if jeff did it

@kevin yes that is in the works
remember, though, that @name is a de-facto reply
so if you're always replying to the last thing someone said, it's massive overkill to explicit reply

and we even didn't ping @JeffAtwood

8:18 PM
I would only click reply if you're replying to something from much earlier
I sort of assume you're replying to.. y'know.. the last thing I said. I don't need to be told that :)

but if there's a discussion going on with many threads it's useful to know what you're replying to with the highlight and such
(I don't know how to explain it better than threads)

topics.

there could be some posting something in between while typing the message.

you can do whatever you want, I'm just telling you what we're designing for. If you want to type every message as an individual character, I can't stop
y
o
u

lemme guess... it rate-limited you.

8:20 PM
and @name is a lot easier to read than a bunch of arrows. meh, I might pull this feature if it gets abused.

or combine them, placing the name instead of the arrow.

exactly like twitter replies
so you can do the @syntax manually, but also have it linked to the message you clicked reply for

oh %^&* Twitter

what do you guys have against twitter

Yeah . . .

8:24 PM
a meme?

Twitter is like the linux of social networking: hard to use and with less features ✎

more OS X than linux tbh

Twitter is not open source.

but the api is
I guess its not a perfect analogy

the API is free and public, free and public != open source

8:27 PM
I dislike the OSX analogy because Apple hates programmers

I don't think Twitter can really be compared to other social networking sites, as it serves quite a different purpose than, say, Facebook does.

I already said its not a perfect analogy

It's more like micro-blogging or something.

@KevinY facebook does exactly what twitter does
through wall posts
its just aggregated differently

Twitter is Twitter, it has established it's own genre, and others are duplicating twitter.

8:28 PM
much the way bbs are bbs?

nostalgia!

it's literally microblogging @KevinY

I suppose the two are similar, but I feel they serve different purposes. For example, I go on Facebook to catch up with what my friends are doing. However, I use Twitter more for news updates than talking to friends; I wouldn't go on Facebook to do that. My personal opinion anyways . . .

how about nano-blogging

8:46 PM
I might not be the Jon Skeet of gaming, but I might be the Jon Skeet of Starcraft 2

A: Best counters for Zerg air units in Starcraft 2?

tzenesThere is no unit which will magically let you beat a Zerg air mix, even Thors fall to mass Muta with a little micro. Olie Possible Duplicate: Do Guitar Hero peripherals work with Rock Band and vice versa? Subject pretty much says it all. I've got PS3 + Rock Band, and would like to use Guitar-hero controllers. Are there adaptors? Can I hack them, somehow? Similarly, can I make my own controllers? Are ...

yes

no, more like the other way around.

Even though his came first.

8:53 PM
I think the first oen you linked should be the right one
not sure which order they came in though

I asked my question (first link) after he asked his, but I didn't see it.

your question is a superset of his question
but the alternative isn't true
I'm voting to close the ps3 only one: gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/50/…

also voted.

Heh, I thought mine would be considered the duplicate (I guess I'm just accustomed to the second question always being a duplicate).

you will get 0 rep today from that answer @tzenes, but tomorrow... there is a new rep limit.

9:05 PM
Anyways, I'm going to go now. Bye everyone.

Jed DanielsThis question was originally posted a while ago by someone else on Super User, and closed since Super User is not for questions about games. @alexanderpas by tomorrow everyone will have voted

yeah, i'm not pinging anyone this late.

9:22 PM
I ment in response to your early comment
I voted to close on this

Good morning all.
Closers of sited question! May I offer a solution: Rather than asking 'what games work well', I would suggest the question be changed to 'what is the functional relation between system specs in mac hardware and specs in a windows vm, and which is most suitable for playing games?'

Q: What are some fun RuneScape activities for a F2P small group with different levels?

RicketRuneScape is a fun game but I've lost interest because I have higher levels than my friends, and we aren't able to have fun together. In addition, I'm paying for membership while my friends remain free players, so this again stifles our fun. What are some fun things that a small group of people ...

McKay is trolling. He has no idea what he's talking about

how could you tell if he was trolling?

Because he Here's a few games that should work fine in VMWare:

Minesweeper
Chip's Challenge
Castle of the Winds
Dwarf Fortress

9:35 PM
no, I meant it as an insult. As in, how could you tell if he was trolling or just being his usual self, talking about things he has no idea about

haha
well downvote please
this is actually harmful to the site because we don't want pc/mac fanbois battling it out

already done.

I think McKay might be harmful to the site
or maybe not harmful, but annoying

Definitely annoying

nobody can be really harmful in the sense that everything is revertable

9:41 PM
this isn't the first time I've seen him make a stupid/snippy answer that was totally unwarranted. It's not like the question is stupid, just a little off.

but annoying is harmful to a community too

seriously
he answered that question twice

posted a comment about why his answer is dumb
is this a good opportunity to invite him into chat?

let our comments pertaining to him scroll out to oblivion first
