Back to the teachers....who are secular saints, in my book...wouldnt do that job at gunpoint...I was in parochial school and any crap was stepped on, fast

02:21
@phantom42 I totally misread your message and thought you were talking about actually hanging someone...whoops
02:39
@SSumner damn. we totally did it wrong.

@randal'thor @Iksandar Actually, moderators appear with their names in blue text in chat.

CANT IT JUST BE OVER NOW?!
@MikeEdenfield No.
end it now so I can go to lunch in peace?
@MikeEdenfield ...No.
no, I like that it won't end until I'm off work and sitting at home watching Doctor Who when I can chat in here as much as I want without looking like I'm slacking off
4 hours left
@Ixrec Oh, you'll still look like you're slacking off.
16:11
but at home, where it's socially acceptable
i'm gonna have nervous-stomach-futters while eating my pork chops.
all my chores are done on the weekend anyway
do mods get free t-shirts?
@MikeEdenfield From my hazy recollection, every nominee gets one.
whoa, really?
16:13
oh.
that's all I really wanted. :)
I have my M&TV one but it's red.
:(
will it arrive in 6-8 weeks?
you know it!

16:51
I wonder, is a running score kept during the election, for mods or perhaps just CMs to see?
@SQB AFAIK, SE has access to the votes as they come in, but they aren't sharing for obvious reasons.
Besides, the final tally can't be run until the election closes.
SQB
SQB
The final tally not. But I can imagine CMs wanting to keep an eye on the score.
Sure, I imagine they can monitor who is 'winning' at any given time, and they'd want to catch abnormal voting patterns early on.
3 hours to go.
17:17
I didn't get a t-shirt last year
@SSumner did you fill out the form/survey/email thing?
i had to contact them about it eventually per shog's instructions
ended up with a shirt, some stickers and i think a sharpie
I didn't even get the e-mail and only noticed from others. I had to ask them in chat to resend it, then it worked. (But on the upside I got two packages, for whatever reason.)
@Keen Whether they win or not?
in Mos Eisley, Sep 3 '15 at 19:36, by Shog9
@phantom42 use the /contact form & let 'em know when you filled it out. Good chance it just got lost.
@randal'thor yes
well, we did last year, at least
... eventually
@phantom42 It means giving SE your address though.
I quite enjoy being like Hogwarts: Unplottable.
17:29
well then you get no free swag
it's not DLC.
Even mods can't dox me (beyond being in the UK, which I'm open about). I must admit I've never dared a CM to try.
I only have two StackExchange t-shirts from elections. I think I was forgotten one year.
Oh wait, I also have a Scifi.SE shirt, so maybe I have all three.
last year, there was apparently a staff change and the new person didnt realize they were supposed to send them out or something
then promised to do it soon, and then i never heard from them again until i poked them via the contact form
alex said he got his though. not sure if he contacted them about it
I contacted someone that @Richard turned me to, and I eventually got mine around Sep.
@phantom42 yep sure did
17:37
thats when i got mine last year. give or take
@SSumner go poke 'em.
@phantom42 who?
then you can wear the shirt, and mention it in the next election.
@JackBNimble Was your scifi one from the election or top-user swag?
@SSumner just use the contact form on the site and mention that you filled out the info but never got your election swag.
@Kevin I don't recall. It was when I was thinner, because it is now slightly too small, so it might have been around 2011-2012 related to swag for some event.
At one point I received a box of stickers that had stuff for scifi.se and SE.
17:41
How does top-user swag work? Does it only get handed out at site graduation? What does "top" mean?
@randal'thor The opposite of bottom?
@randal'thor Top means overall reputation. (During graduation it's the first 2 pages, i.e. the top 72 users.)
@ryan I meant how high do you have to be to count as one of the "top" users :-P
@randal'thor Yeah, usually just once around graduation
So people like Richard, Praxis, and I missed out on that swag.

Q: Science Fiction and Fantasy Top User Swag

Rebecca ChernoffAs a thank you for being awesome, if you have at least 1500 reputation (as of Feb 22) and are on page 1 or page 2 of … http://scifi.stackexchange.com/users?tab=reputation&filter=all … we'll be sending you a little care package shortly: Science Fiction and Fantasy t-shirt in your size Science ...

The first year of the site was the good year. Tons of contests and free stuff.
@randal'thor Yep
@Kevin That is probably where I got my shirt.
all I really wanted from the election was a t-shirt. The rest sounds like it's hard work. Who'd sign up for that on purpose?
4
@MikeEdenfield You would, of course.
17:45
This election every year is the only opportunity I have for new clothing.
@Mithrandir And you.
oh yeah.
do you have to make it through the primary to get a shirt?
or does 500-rep-guy have more SE t-shirts than I do?
And an extra T-shirt in a plastic bag does not a wardrobe make.
it does if you're poor, or -- hypothetically -- just got divorced and was forced to consolidate your wardrobe down to just 5 shirts.
Come to think of it, I should nominate myself for every site election.

17:47
@JackBNimble You're dead to me. :D
@JackBNimble I thought you already had?
oh yeah! I want a worldbuilding t-shirt.
@randal'thor I mean across the SE network.
@MikeEdenfield The shirt I got last year is just StackExchange, it isn't site specific.
@MikeEdenfield Worldbuilding already has MORE than enough candidates.
@MikeEdenfield i ran for mod and all i got was a SE shirt. it wasn't SFF specific
17:48
Somebody needed to have JBN dead to them, not the other way around.
Already 13 candidates and nominations have only been open for less than a day.
@JackBNimble they stopped making site-specific swag a while ago.
@Kevin That's a downer.
At all, or just for elections?
@phantom42 well. that's no fun.
@Kevin i just got a Movies & TV shirt a month ago..
17:52
on the bright side, it's a very comfy shirt
@randal'thor at all I thought, but possibly not
There was the recent contest for personalised swag:
78
Q: Choose your own swag - the craziest contest idea ever! What were we thinking?

animuson Contest Has Ended Thanks to everyone for participating. I will be contacting those who participated for shipping details and item verification within the week. Keep a lookout for the email! Tired of seeing all the Stack Overflow swag everywhere? Want something different? Well, now's you...

The page says election closes in 1 hour, but as we learned previously, it really means 1.95 hours, rounded down.
math.floor(timeleft)
18:13
of course I'm going to be in a meeting from 1:30 to 3:30
A 2 hour meeting? I'm sure that's going to be useful...
it's 2 1-hr meetings.
those are pretty short around here.
our 10:00-11:00 meetings usually break around 12:30 because everyone gets hungry.
as moderator, I will never schedule a 2 hour meeting over lunch.
@MikeEdenfield Are you saying they routinely go 1.5 hours over?
only when the person scheduling the meeting is naive and/or optimistic.
i usually schedule my 30-minute meetings for an hour
19:00
Election closes in 1 hour.
19:50
10 mins
@Keen how long after polls close do we normally find out what the results are?
(I think someone asked this earlier but didn't get an authoritative answer)
in Mos Eisley, 5 mins ago, by rand al'thor
Last year the result was published in Mos four minutes after the election ended.
The meta post from Shog only came 35 minutes later.
I blame the bouncing ferret gif for pushing your useful information off my screen
Well, it was removed ...
and now there's a new one with multiple ferrets
19:56
I hope the election has two people nearly tying and the results are delayed by 12 hours so that CNN can endless report on how the election is too close to call.
2.5 minutes
and somehow we have to recount all the voters who picked a 2nd choice but not a 1st choice, or who clicked between the buttons and thus didn't get counted properly
I hole punched my monitor for my votes.
2
Then I mailed the monitor in as an absentee ballot.

@JackBNimble Hope you took care of the hanging chad LCD.
@Keen What chad? Weber?
30 seconds!
20:00
I should have done more.
> election ended
> 12 secs ago
WHO WON?!
the 486dx2 turbo is running the numbers.
except someone forgot to press the turbo button.
Does someone have to edit the results page or will they auto populate?
oh neat, it says you can compute the results yourself by downloading stuff
I changed my #3 choice (again) with about 6 seconds to spare
20:03
Looks like Null and rand won.
3
Using MeekSTV, but I know nothing about the other settings in OpenSTV.
Sigh. 3rd place.
Winners are Null and rand al'thor.
@JackBNimble I voted for you jack
How come meta.scifi.stackexchange.com/users?tab=moderators doesn't show the new mods yet? Do they first have to solemnly swear to serve Sci Fic or something?
In any case, congratulations to the new mods.
@b_jonas I believe we have to sign the mod agreement.
But I'm not entirely sure how to do this.
20:08
And to the other candidates too, who nearly became mods.
Hoping for an email from the Team.

@JackBNimble you were my #1 choice.
@JackBNimble Better than last year. Next election, you'll make it :-)
Slap bang in the middle of the pack, like last year. I’m happy. :-)
rand al'thor was actually my first pick
but I'd have been happy with almost any of the candidates
20:12
@alexwlchan I vacillated between you and Jason for my 3rd pick. It was a very tough choice, and I ended up changing it for the last time with seconds to spare.
does the mod agreement include a serious non-disclosure agreement? is there a humiliating initiation ceremony? or perhaps black magic involved?
@randal'thor Thank you. I won’t ask you to tell us who you actually voted for, but to know I was even in consideration is very kind.
Better luck next year himar 2017
@Loong I see.
I hope all the old moderators will be satisfied with the choices, so they can moderate together in peace.

20:15
@alexwlchan You were in my top three as well.
@Himarm Typical, Himarm doesn't even spell his name correctly :P

Q: 2016 Community Moderator Election Results

Jon EricsonScience Fiction & Fantasy's fourth moderator election has come to a close, the votes have been tallied, and the 2 new moderators are: They'll be joining the existing crew shortly — please thank them for volunteering, and share your assistance and advice with them as they learn the ropes! For...

Out of curiosity, I ran the results through all the other election methods in OpenSTV's short list. The two winners are the same no matter what I pick. Third place is usually Jack but under a handful of methods comes out as Jason instead.
@b_jonas Hmm. Why did people downvote this?
Both question and answer.
I guess if they disapproved of the result...?
I guess
20:19
That would be my guess.
@randal'thor Dunno. It's on meta, so it could mean that.
Wait, why were there only 588 voters? Shouldn't there have been more than that, given that anyone with rep 150 or higher on Sci Fi was eligable?
@b_jonas Having the rep to vote doesn’t force you to vote.
@b_jonas 4,242 voters were eligible, 1,655 visited the site during the election, 1,309 visited the election page, and 588 voted
A huge number of those will be drive-by users who’ve never returned to the site.
(info from here)
20:23
@randal'thor I see
the 1,655 number probably represents the real voter base, the other 2600 likely had no idea there even was an election nor would ever be affected by the result
yeah
Well, it's time for me to say goodbye to Science Fiction & Fantasy. It's a pity. But I really can't be part of a community that elects a bully and liar to a position that grants access to private information and allows injecting fake data in difficult-to-trace ways.
so that's roughly 1/3 turnout
I thought there were more people than that
@Gilles Goodbye, Gilles. It's a pity if you're leaving.
20:25
@Gilles I am so sorry to see you go.
@Gilles I’m sorry to see you go. Thanks for everything you put into the site, especially when it was just getting off the ground.
@Gilles I'm sorry we couldn't be reconciled. This wasn't my intention at all. You've contributed a huge amount to the site, and won't be forgotten.
to whichever mod just cleared the star from gilles' comment, will you also clear the one from rand's reply?
Turnout was 35%, which is about in line with the last two elections.
@phantom42 I'm not a mod yet, so it wasn't me.
In fact, I'm out.
20:31
Mods can kill chat stars without deleting the chat comment?
@b_jonas Yep
I think room owners can too
@Ixrec Yep
I didn't know. Probably because I don't care much about chat stars.
7
Q: How can I (as the room owner) unstar a message in chat?

Kendall FreyIs there a way to unstar a message starred by another user in chat? The situation is this: A user recently posted this message in a chat room. asl pls Someone starred it, and now it appears on the sidebar. I really don't think such messages should be displayed on the sidebar, as they are ...

20:51
@Null Can you please remove my Scifi account? I don't want my private stuff on the hand of a racist guy.
Ps. IDK if mods have to power for that, but not whole account please, just scifi..
@ardaozkal Use the "contact us" form on the bottom of the page.
Just saw that, sorry.
21:09
The winter of my discontent starts right.... NOW!
@JackBNimble Will the groundhog seeing or not seeing its shadow influence how long the winter of your discontent will last? It being Groundhog Day today...
I don't even remember making this comic, but @Loong posted it at some point, and it still rings true.
