Right, @Mart, now you've got me \newcommanding all over my Sphinx documentation, too.
Saves SOOO much typing, I can't believe I didn't think of doing it sooner.

@hBy2Py buddy, you lost me there... what is your Sphinx documentation?

Q: Poll: mhchem syntax for electron configuration

mhchemAs the author of mhchem, I am considering to add electron configuration to \ce. I dediced to give it a little bit spacing for readability: $\mathrm{[Kr]\mskip2mu4d^{10}\mskip2mu5s^1\mskip2mu5p^3\mskip2mu5d^4}$. Now, I'd like to ask you what you consider an intuitive input syntax. I will propose ...

@Martin-マーチン See here:
Documentation for my various programming side projects. Can be set up to use MathJax.

cool... but why not use real LaTeX? aparently they can handle it

Jan
@M.A.R. Nice, thanks ^^
@DHMO You should be able to just eliminate that as is; suggesting K2CO3 and stirring for extended time. Do you want me to perform a SciFinder search, too? ;)
If your after ester hydrolysis/elimination, I suggest Bu2SnO in MeOH (reflux) to give the open-chain methyl ester; then i) MsCl/DBU, ii) DBU to eliminate (should give the thermodynamic direction imho); then KOH to remove the methyl ester. If you’re scared of methyl esters, use ethanol in the first step.

Very lazy xD
I mean, I ‘got up’ at like eleven-ish to play Zen Koi for like an hour and now I decided to check Discord and SE before even having breakfast … it is now quarter past one.

sounds like a good day

Q: What is the name of this compound?

Kayla I am finding this compound difficult to name. Help!

Anyway, the mathjax rendered in the onebox includes a new definition for \ce{}.
I don't think anybody is evil and dedicated enough to troll us in that way; but I just find it fun to find different possibilities. ;D

Q: How to make p-chloroanisole from methanol and benzene?

John SmithI am tasked to synthesise para-chloroanisole from methanol and benzene. Other reagents are permitted. Would it be correct to have the benzene attack the methanol $\ce{H}$ and then attack the carbocation that forms with the methoxy ion? From there use $\ce{Cl2}$ and $\ce{AlCl3}$ which would insta...

@Martin-マーチン ? Where?

Jan
@hBy2Py Just answered ;)

@Loong At least, participating in chat requires 20 rep.
That should hopefully stop any potential trolls. ;)

hm, maybe we could fix some posts not by edits but by redefining MathJax ;-)

Jan
2:32 PM
@Loong \def\csname{content of user’s post}\endcsname\null

looks like a trivial edit clicks "accept"

@Loong any post? Wow, +2 +2 +2… iam getting to work

@orthocresol It's a good thing MathJax doesn't have filesystem access.
@Jan Hehehehe

@hBy2Py Both of the input methods use LaTeX as the syntax, but it's either MathJax or an image renderer that actually converts the input to mathy goodness.

2:48 PM
Why pressure is written as “p” instead of “P” ?

@Ramanujan Symbols for quantities are only recommendations. In principle, you could use any symbol if you define it properly. However, most standards recommend p for pressure and P for power.

3:30 PM
Hey,iam with name Ramanujan in chat but in chemistry.se iam with my previous name :(

@ortho Hiya! o/

@Ramanujan You can change that. And if you do, make sure to click "Save and copy changes to all Stack Exchange communities" to change your profile on all sites.

So chat is different with chemistry we ? @Loong

Pssst @Loong @ortho, a favour? Is this general equation for curl correct?

@Ramanujan your chat account is currently linked to you parent account on math.stackexchange.com

Jan
3:35 PM
Chat accounts are always linked to just one SE account. In my case it is chem, which is why I am a porphyrin. If I had chosen to link German, I would be a Bavarian flag.
Chat.SE then pulls all SE-based information from that specific SE account (except rep, if it shows up, which is always total rep).

Jan
For example, @Para’s chat account is linked to his Physics account.

@paracresol the formula looks correct; however, i, j, and k should be written as vectors
@paracresol we didn't curl our hair in any physics courses

@Loong The formula features (for example) the term partial E (z-component) by partial y ... I find this confusing since, well, shouldn't that be equal to nothing? (I'm still in high-school, so bear with me)
@Loong Honestly, I wish it were that simple ._.

@paracresol The article goes on to say that Engelland is supposed to mean the angels’ land, not England.
(Also, brennt needs a double-n)

@Jan Hmmm... I was wondering what Mommy was in england in the first place... I misread the Engel bit ._.

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich (also referred to as LMU or the University of Munich, in German: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) is a public research university located in Munich, Germany. The University of Munich is among Germany's oldest universities. Originally established in Ingolstadt in 1472 by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut, the university was moved in 1800 to Landshut by King Maximilian I of Bavaria when Ingolstadt was threatened by the French, before being relocated to its present-day location in Munich in 1826 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. In 1802, the university was...

@Jan And there is also the one by our famous regional writer Hermann Löns.

@satyatech The actual studies were LMU Munich. Major subjects (master’s) organic chem and inorganic chem, minor subject structure biology. No major and minor subjects in the bachelor’s studies, but computational chemistry as an elective one.
@Loong I hadn’t heard of him. Clearly I never arrived in the far North xD

I am also going to join university after qualifying entrance tests
@Jan Hey have you heard the name of IITs.

Jan
Nope.

Chauvinism is an exaggerated patriotism and a belligerent belief in national superiority and glory. Whereas patriotism and nationalism may represent temperate pride, chauvinism is intemperate. According to legend, French soldier Nicolas Chauvin was badly wounded in the Napoleonic wars. He received a pension for his injuries but it was not enough to live on. After Napoleon abdicated, Chauvin was a fanatical Bonapartist despite the unpopularity of this view in Bourbon Restoration France. His single-minded blind devotion to his cause, despite neglect by his faction and harassment by its enemies, started...

And Dieter Zetsche, who is the CEO of Mercedes, studied at the University of Karlsruhe and obtained his PhD from the University of Paderborn (then the Gesamthochschule Paderborn). Does that show any importance of the unis of Karlsruhe or Paderborn?

@Jan Woohoo \o/

@ Jan here at IITs people suicide if they don't get IIts
SUICIDE

^ Bu...but...your population still numbers well over a billion...
Failed attempts at suicides perhaps? ;p

Lol ,not all people are going to prepare for iits

Even better, the CEO of Volkswagen, Matthias Müller, only studied computer sciences at the FH Munich (now probably calling itself university of applied sciences). Does that show any importance of the FH Munich?

@satyatech Well, if you want your child to be an engineer, Germany has a great reputation for those … if you want your child to do business, you’ll be looking at things like the Harvard business school and so the list could go on ^^

Donated his shares in the company Carl Zeiss to form Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung, still in existence today. Franz Carl Achard: Developed a process to produce sugar from sugar beet.

Third Rome was the idea that some city, state, or country is the successor to the legacy of ancient Rome (the "first Rome"). The difference between French ton and votre.
Or Finnish sinun and teidän.

@paracresol so I can say he destroyed Germany.

@Jan Plus I regret having learnt French in the first place ._.

@paracresol do you guys see any any monuments of praise for him in Germany.

The Autobahn (German: Autobahn, plural Autobahnen) is the federal controlled-access highway system in Germany. The official German term is Bundesautobahn (plural Bundesautobahnen, abbreviated BAB), which translates as "federal motorway". The literal meaning of the word Bundesautobahn is "Federal Auto(mobile) Track". German autobahns have no federally mandated speed limit for some classes of vehicles. However limits are posted (and enforced) in areas that are urbanized, substandard, accident-prone, or under construction. On speed-unrestricted stretches, an advisory speed limit (Richtgeschwindigkeit...

@Jan in keto-enol tautomerism is keto form more stable than the enol if so why?

9:14 PM
You don’t. Well, you can, if you want to add extra space e.g. no-break spaces. But you shouldn’t because SE doesn’t support it natively.

And the space can be different on mobile devices.

9:41 PM
well, I used a suggestion someone did on the meta
a little discussion on TM-alkoxides, and how they're used.
I'm not 100% on whether precipitating aluminium isopropoxide in IPA is actually a good way to recover it, or whether this is something you'd even want to do after running the reaction, but I think it is possible
I used $\hskipXin$
