Morning everyone

mornin

Morning. Working from home today, looking after a sick dog.

@Snow Ohh.. poor pooch

It's not a particularly fragrent ailment. Lets hope it doesn't last too long.

10:52 AM
@Snow ouch.. poor Snow as well then

Hopefully on the mend now.

11:10 AM
An ex intern of our company has contracted an internship with a company we now share office with. We've met him as the company settled
quite funny how small is the development world

11:20 AM
@Snow Bummer...hopefully nothing serious...

11:53 AM
Just a bad stomach, I think. Been going all weekend, so he took a visit to the vet this morning.
@JaneS Hola, hopw you're well.

@Snow the catch phrase "I hope you're well" reminds me of a dumb twitter account "I am recruitr" with good parody of recruiters hoping your well before going on to trying to hire developers

12:08 PM
@Snow :( best wishes to your dog

He thanks you.

Huh. Ran into an IP rate limit just now.

@Magisch Been happening to me for years. Never been able to reliably reproduce it.
Never seemed particularly related to how often I'm using the network either.

What do you guys think about wearing a hoodie over a suit to an interview then taking it off when you go in
Or always take it off before you go in
same with something like a coat

hoodie - take off before you go in, smart coat - take off when you go in (or before if you want)

That's what I thought, if dress code is casual then you could possibly keep the hoodie on but still depends on the hoodie

one of the reasons for wearing a suit to an interview is because it's human nature that first impressions matter. Why deprive yourself of that possible advantage?
nope hoodie + suit always makes you look like you don't understand the point of wearing a suit to an interview.

I didn't really last in the field long enough but a lot of question on TWP I saw that a lot of programming interviews were none smart?

It's fine to use a hoodie as a jacket. As long as you take it off before you enter the Room of Doom.

2:51 PM
Obviously always best to ask also
Simple dress code question

@Twyxz sure there may be times at programming interview where you don't need a suit - but if in *any) doubt go with the suit.

Wearing a suit to an interview is usually a good thing, and shows respect. You can always dress down a bit by just taking your tie off (after asking, naturally).
"Mind if I take my tie off? I'm feeling a bit overdressed like this."
If the mood suits, obviously.

My friend is too simple to follow these steps, he's awkward
I'll just tell him go all out hahahah

it's very highly dependent of industry / location / company size / company culture
where i'd work you'd be 100% overdressed with a suit, always go for a shirt instead (not a teeshirt but a clean shirt with jeans)
but hoodie with a suit is a strange mix

hoodie with a suit is like the cold-weather version of wearing one of those t-shirts with a bow-tie drawn on under a dinner jacket. So. Much. Cringe.

2:57 PM
sadly its part of the interview that the interviewee shows understanding of the industry "codes" the interviewee works in

@motosubatsu People in my my building sometimes wear fleece gilets over a tie & shirt.

@Snow in an office? that's pretty strange!

@motosubatsu Yeah. It's a brand thing. They have to be seen as "country" people wearing Barbour or Schoffel.

@Snow I can believe that.. that combo pretty much screams "I drive a Range Rover that's never even seen grass"

They also seem to be immune to being eye-rolled at.

3:04 PM
@Snow they always are for some reason - I assume it must take years of dedicated practice

I bet I can shoot better than them.

@Snow I don't doubt it! I expect most of their shooting actually consists of standing around discussing golf with their buddies while having the shotgun cracked open across the cook of one elbow

They probably skip that part altogether and just go to the bar instead.

@Snow where they drink Glenlivet 12 and pretend it's 50?

3:21 PM
lol - I guess!

3:45 PM
workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/146444/… is avoidance always the way to go ? I feel like it's possible to discuss opposite politics viewpoints if you are very tactful about it
I've yet to encounter someone I really agree with on the subject of politics - this didn't prevent me to collect and discuss viewpoints that aren't mine

@ArthurHavlicek it depends on the other person - as the OP describes them that manager I would never be engaging with on those sorts of topics
the problem is that you often don't know whether they are going to be someone who you can have a reasonable discourse with until it's too late
and if that person is your manager then it's all too easy to end up screwed

I suspect OP portrait of the manager could be a bit of a caricature due to being in opposite beliefs
I may be a bit twisted but in such scenario I'd like to explore the manager's beliefs by asking questions and pretending I could agree, just so I learn a bit more where not to step
it's insightful to learn how to communicate efficiently
I'm not sure everybody can do that though, it requires to litteraly sit on your own beliefs

4:00 PM
I guess I'd view it that there was very little to gain and quite a lot to lose by engaging them

4:28 PM
Friends - can I throw a salary at you too see if it's unreasonable? I live in the southwest of the United States. I have about 10 years of experience as a Software Engineer. I don't know if titles mean much, but I would call myself a Software Engineer III. Right now my base salary is around 85 k. Does that seem low to you?

@RonnieW can't say myself as I'm in the UK.. maybe one of our US folks will chime in though

Bee
4:41 PM
@Ronnie Have you ever tried the salary tool on Linkedin? I don't know how accurate it is for your area but mine (Data Scientist London) it seems pretty accurate: linkedin.com/salary/…

Glassdoor can provide a reasonable source of salary information for an area as well

5:12 PM
as a 3rd source you can do an indeed search and see how much is offered in positions that match your profile

9:46 PM
@Snow Yes, all good, thanks for asking! I hope your puppy is feeling better :)
