Ah, hadn't noticed the replies.
@enderland It's by car unfortunately, and a pretty crappy car at that, though that's about to change soon. ;)
08:49
@RoryAlsop It used to be every day, a few months ago I was placed on another client half-time and that's only 60km or so :)
09:07
So now that we have our first gold badge member I'm wondering: can Joe add his gold tag to a question, insta-close it, then remove the tag again?
I don't expect he ever will but it makes you wonder if there's a check against that.
Interesting thought - don't know if that has ever been discussed. To TL with it :-)
09:27
TL?

@Lilienthal That should be possible. It doesn't need to be "fixed" IMHO, since it is consistent with the SE philosophy of tying privilege to reputation and assuming that people will use their privilege responsibly.
Yeah that's true enough.
Moreover since such misuse is subject to public scrutiny, a gold badge user is highly unlikely to do it.
Like I said I'm not worried, just curious.

Book Exchange

Proposed Q&A site for people seeking recommendations for books to read given a stated interest in previously read books, authors, topics, themes, moods, settings, characters, and/or other specific criteria.

Currently in definition.

This is one of the dumbest proposals I've seen in a while.
And it seems like the people there profoundly misunderstand the SE framework.
@Lilienthal I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that and that it has to be a tag on the original question
Clearly we need @JoeStrazzere to test it now ;)

Q: Change "original tags" to "current tags" in the help center description of the dupehammer

YannisThe help center tells us the dupehammer works with the original tags of the question: A question can be closed as duplicate with a single vote from a moderator or a user who has earned a gold tag badge in one of that question's original tags. That, however, is no longer the case: First...

Pfff
;)
Workplace gold tag badges will be more useful though since many questions here get tagged professionalism/etc

SAP

Proposed Q&A site for developers and users of SAP software.

Closed before being launched.

Looks like this died.
RIP. though I'm so done with SAP forever :P
Time for me to restart it then maybe ;)
But I still have no real clue how to properly start an Area51 proposal
The entire system seems backwards and opposed to active participation.
That got a bunch of followers surprisingly
There's so much random crap before you can even get close to a beta that there's not point getting non-SE people involved.
And there's no way to publish the proposal on SE sites.
Even more so because by definition it won't match the interests of existing SE audiences.
Except perhaps a subset of SO in the case of programming languages.
SAP is pretty ... targeted. It's not like some of the other SE sites which can attract developers of many different backgrounds, etc.
14:42
SAP is also hugely diverse
I've never worked with it, although I know it's an ERP system that allows devs to write their own modules, etc
It's in dire need of a decent Q&A site is what it is ;)
what I was saying, however, is that if SO is super popular because you can ask any programming question, no matter the language
I had ok luck with their forums, compared to MSDN at least...
SAP is ... only for SAP
14:43
@AndreiROM SAP has a lot of modules though
there are plenty of language specific sites now (emacs, vim, salesforce, etc)
SAP is basically the largest ERP on the market still and there are a ton of much smaller sites as @enderland mentioned.
SAP could def take off .. but I think it would need to be advertised in the right circles
such as existing (if any) SAP sites
Yeah and that's where the Area51 framework falls flat.
There's no point to advertise it.
Because there's nothing to do.
I have no idea how the process works
Believe me I do.
14:45
on the face of it an SAP site should be massively useful/succesfull
You make an account and click follow, then vote on a few questions if you remember. Then you wait for a few months.
@Lilienthal "wait a few months" - lol
@AndreiROM part of the reason that the site is needed is that SAP has decided to paywall fricking EVERYTHING :(
@enderland You mean the guides, resources and manuals?
@enderland that sucks. I think I did work with SAP once .. briefly. I had to make some minor modifications to a senior dev's project (a few years ago)
I remember looking for documentation for a few days before throwing my hands up and saying I have no idea what I'm doing
14:47
@Lilienthal everything. want release notes for something? paywall. want bug fix suggestions? paywall.
@enderland most SAP implementations are so expensive that the customers are probably willing to pay the extra cash just to get it working properly
yeah they are. but that doesn't mean that it's enjoyable to try to find information for
since nearly all "answers" are behind a paywall, and not on google :(
@enderland agreed
so maybe it's worth fighting for it on area 51 ?
I'm done with SAP now, I'll let @Lilienthal carry that banner ;)
14:51
SAP sending an email to SE to put the request down in 3...2...1...
Not sure about that paywall though. You may need an S or P user to access notes and the like, but that never seemed to be a problem for me.
Maybe it's different for small installations.
@Lilienthal it's just annoying. we had that, so it wasn't a problem, but it sure was annoying - and reflects on SAP's business model of "screw the customers" :P
@Lilienthal Looks like we are being invaded by Quorans. :p
Yeah, I knew someone who was an ABAP developer, and begged his boss to be transferred to other team. The pay was good, but he was so stressed that he accepted a significant pay cut.
I'm not sure I get the problem with logging into an account but to each their own I suppose. :)
15:03
@Trickylastname I just took a pay cut from doing SAP work to do "real" dev :)
The bigger problem with the SCN forums is that they're so incredibly useless, outdated and unmoderated.
@Lilienthal So basically .. everything?
As in compared to the paywall that I don't consider an issue
Reconsidered @jmort253 ?

Q: Should I pull out of a job running before they offer it to me?

user27207So last week, I went to an interview. The interview went well and I liked the company. However, it would require a 65 mile drive a day. I was aware of this before the interview, but decided to go just to check it out and to learn more about the job. During the interview, I learned that the job i...

Native speakers: can you confirm that there's no such thing as "job running"?
Seems to me like the OP mashed up "in/out of the running".
@Lilienthal Yeh, you could say that. I talked to the duck and decided to just reopen it.

Q: How to manage a co-worker you dislike

Clark KentI have recently been promoted to manage a small team I worked in before. My problem is, one of my coworkers. The co-worker (Jane) is a person I really do not like. We’ve had several loud clashes. Most of my coworkers don't like Jane very much, but they don't work close to her everyday, so they ...

@jmort253 I was thinking about that too, so you can count my vote there :)
15:17
This question has been edited by the op, who removed content that painted the coworker in a bad light.
So it seems like a viable question with some solid answers.
Damn mods.
My highest-voted comment, gone without so much as a by-your-leave.
;)
Ah, yeh, it got caught in the crossfire. ;)
Mod happens
Looks more like a broadside than a crossfire :)
Yeh, it looks like I just dropped a nuke.
But I actually went through every single comment. There were several good ones seeking clarity, which the op resolved, making them obsolete comments, or comments answering the question, which we try to discourage since the answers section is where all the Google search juice will come from.
15:21
Feels like the discussion on whether it's on-topic might restart now, but I guess interest died down anyway so that's unlikely.
This is also good to note that this is a shining example of where the close, edit, reopen cycle works really well to take some raw, unfinished material and turn it into a sculpted masterpiece.
Huh. I forgot I actually answered that. I was reading the first phrases and thought "phew, that's pretty harsh". Then I noticed the aggressive bolding and a mention of Allison Green and realised it must be one of mine. ;)
@Lilienthal And that's okay. A lot of times these tools are meant to help things get closer to the mark even if we can't 100% get there. If it's still way off target, you folks will step in as a group.
lol
Yeh I come across my Stack Overflow answers every now and then and am surprised to see my name at the bottom of the list.
The Internet is forever.

Q: How to convince company to not "go overboard" with email signature?

KlaymenDKThe "signature culture" at my company is dangerously close to ridiculous, and this question made me ask about it here. We're an "MS Gold Ultra Colour Plus(tm)(c)(fm)(wtf) Partner" which is apparently an important marketing point, and a bunch of my colleagues have a wide array of certifications a...

HNQ, calling it now.
@Lilienthal no kidding lol! that reminds me of forums where people do that sort of thing
15:25
@Lilienthal What is it?
Oh... email sig
@Lilienthal that is absolutely hilarious
wow
Now when I thought extreme I thought some graphics, but that's like having an entire website in your email signature.
All it needs is some navigation and maybe chat support.
Goddamit @AndreiROM
I was about to edit an Aliens reference into my comment.
But was contemplating whether it was appropriate or not.
@Lilienthal MUAHAHAHAHA
@Lilienthal I can hope :)
enderland threw an answer there
15:41
lilien did the same
> You will need to ask your manager about this. There is no one correct answer, it's up to the company.
I tried marking that question as a duplicate, but damn!
> The duplicate question must exist on The Workplace Stack Exchange
How is that not a giant warning sign to vote to close?
@MaskedMan Link it in the comments. If it's a cross-post flag it.
16:04
@Lilienthal It is actually somewhat humorous.
Here goes nothing.

A: How to convince company to not "go overboard" with email signature?

Masked ManMy first instinct when I read this question was to check if there was a way to read emails from a specific group of users to plaintext format. I looked around for a bit, and not surprisingly, it didn't take long to find out that other people have faced this problem before. This answer on superu...

16:21
Wow.
That email was from the CTO.
I expected an AOL noob.
@Lilienthal Dude should apply at Microsoft.
No need to attach resume separately. "My signature is my resume."
Lots of Microsoft strewn all over, they would be impressed.
16:47
Hmm, I wonder if the CTO visits SE. That question will probably make it to HNQ soon. If CTO sees it, the problem may get solved! It doesn't look like OP redacted the oh-so-awesome certification images.
Although that would likely lead to a new question here tomorrow. ;-)
@MaskedMan I don't get the impression that too many "manager types" come to workplace
@MaskedMan yeah, "my manager got angry because I updated a screenshot of an email he sent to me. What can I do?"
17:10
@MaskedMan it's gotta be on HNQ given how many upvotes I have already received lol
@enderland HNQ ?

Q: Zombie army is bad idea. But why actually?

FeanorekIn my custom fantasy world, raising the dead is really simple. Before the Great Act of Beautiful Death raising a body and keeping it alive(undead?) for at least a week was a part of exams before being admitted to any University of Magic worth its wands. Body does not have any intelligence or free...

Q: Peer review processes for company shareholders

TravisGI'm one of five shareholders in our company (all shares are split evenly between us). I guess that's startup culture for you.
A load of inexeperienced people with zero management experiencing throwing out wacky and incredibly illegal ideas while being "in full agreement" that they should do something without know what, how or why.
