Good <morning/afternoon/evening> @jcmeloni!
@jmort253 frighteningly, there are lots of people like that. I don't understand them. Some people are more happy creating an added layer of busywork to ensure they are always necessary and viewed as someone making an improvement, even if the 'improvement' actually wastes company resources and hurts employee productivity and happiness.

@jmac This portion of Ben Chestnut's speech -- founder of MailChimp -- will interest you youtu.be/bwR36YJ3S68

@jmort253 I'll take a look at it when I get a chance -- thanks!
@RhysW It's called "Sales" Rhys, and is a great job if you don't mind rejection. Constant, soul-shattering rejection. The money is great, the hours are (mostly) great, you can schedule your work around your life, but you have to speak to people you don't know, have them chew you out, and then say, "May I please have another?" with a smile.

Q: Industry Specific Tags - What Should we Do?

jmacThis is the only tag representing an industry. We do not have a tag for law-firms or healthcare-industry or agriculture or otherwise. We do have software-industry - 277 questions. This is likely due to the history of the Workplace (since SE was originally designed for folks in the software indu...

2:22 AM
@jmac, you're giving me all kinds of opportunities to drop some links in here related to the conversation. @RhysW, this will tell you everything you need to know about sales: youtube.com/watch?v=8kZg_ALxEz0

2:34 AM
@jmort253 And you've given me some things to watch during my commute, so it's all good
We just got a new tag

Q: What to do when overwhelmed at work?

Juha UntinenHow should one go about doing their work, when there are far too many simultaneous and non-related ongoing tasks to do? Right now, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with the things I am expected to do. Just to give an example of a week's schedule: I must develop translators (from one file format t...

Assuming this means, "getting things done" and really think it's a meta-tag, no?
Is it poor etiquette to ask the asker what the tag means in the question?

Q: How to work with somebody who works quickly without caring for quality?

Rumi P.I work at an organisation with a very small dev department, developing a project with one co-worker only. We are both junior, never used ASP MVC .NET or worked on production grade code before. The others in the department don't have MVC experience either, and have never coded in a team, so they a...

This question would be oh-so-much nicer if it were not so focused on software...

@jmac GTD = Getting Things Done.... This is a thin line...
Productivity in general would be off-topic, but it would seem that productivity in the workplace would easily drift into our site's domain.
I see this as one of those areas of overlap where it could go either way depending on the perspective the asker is looking for.
Thing is, it's a shopping question, which does make it very closeable.
But we have some awesome answerers who aren't fooled into taking the bait on those questions and posting mere links. Joe Strazzere, Paul Hiemstra, and Angelo all three answered it as a process question instead, so it's possible we could edit this post to focus the question more on the process and then reopen it as a workplace productivity post.

Q: Is workplace productivity on topic on The Workplace SE?

jmort253Thanks to some efforts from members of the community, we've since created a more targeted definition of what our site is about. The nature of our topic has made this challenging, but here is what we've come up with so far as taken from our Help Center's On-Topic section: The Workplace Stack E...

@jmort253 I think productivity is a separate issue, my question is whether the "Getting Things Done" system is an appropriate tag (since it is new just for this question). I would see it as a meta-tag, since it defines an approach to a problem rather than the problem itself.

4:14 AM
@jmac Feel free to remove the tag. It does certainly feel like a meta tag.

5:07 AM
@jmort253 Reponded:

A: Is workplace productivity on topic on The Workplace SE?

jmacExecutive Summary I would say that while not off-topic, productivity is toeing the line and likely better at Productivity.SE "Where does it have more overlap?" Is there going to be be more overlap between workplace productivity and non-workplace productivity questions, or workplace productivit...

5:18 AM
@jmac Thanks for providing a detailed answer.

5:37 AM
@jmort253 No problem. We'll see what the rest of the community thinks.

@jmac Wouldn't it be best to compare their top questions with our top questions tagged productivity? Otherwise we are comparing apples and oranges.
we know our top questions are off topic there, if they werent we wouldnt have two sites
In other news I'm off to a good start, sent my CV off last night at midnight and first thing this morning had a phone call back, chatted with the recruiter on my walk to work

@RhysW Hey mate not to bad at all, wbu?

@MichaelGrubey Good thanks, sent my CV off last night, been spammed with calls all day since

4:20 PM
Food for thought: Do people actually post their resumes on Monster.com anymore? Or is the place just a total spam pit?

i never used it in the first place, was too broadly advertised, likely to attract all sorts, i like to keep mine in controlled environments

Q: How to make view points in a meeting counted

happybuddhaI work with a team lead who is dismissive about other races. This person is an American and has no respect for people from other nations. He isn't open about it but his demeanor and candor show his opinions - which are obvious to co-workers and topic of hushed discussions in cubicles. My compan...

I rather think this is going to be symptoms rather than causes

5:48 PM
Are you sure it's not cultural differences in how "aggressively" people present ideas? Americans tend to be much more direct - someone who is not "pushy" may not get their ideas covered or discussed, regardless of race. Because Americans do tend to be more direct, this may come across as racial prejudice - rather than simply preferring people to strongly present and defend their ideas. I don't know if this is the case for you but it is something to consider. — enderland 27 mins ago
I suspect this is the cause

6:15 PM
Oh my god have you seen the boss' new ride?
He talks about making cuts to departments and money-saving efforts because we need to be more conservative about our resources, and then he turns around and buys a Hummer.
Yeah, I can't wait to key that.

6:35 PM
Hahahaha. Welcome @Shiester!

6:50 PM
Thats one way to make an enterance! :P

@Shiester: Make that into a question!

5 hours later…
11:42 PM
@enderland Suppositions about a boss' motivations, especially assigning them to racism (or better-stated 'culturalism' since American ain't a race), really don't sit well with me. The boss could ignore the suggestions because of how they were stated, the position of the person stating them, or otherwise. The way the question is phrased seems to be exceedingly leading...

11:52 PM
@enderland Would have been so much better as 'my boss seems to be dismissive of non-Americans in meetings, how can I support having their ideas heard?'
