7:43 AM
Morning All.

Good morning. 25 Windows Updates this morning. That's two cups of coffee worth of waiting.

We are schedule to have updates on friday only

Monthly for us. A lot of people work from home on Fridays, so downloading 1.5Gb each kills the VPN bandwidth.

woosh

7:58 AM
morning all

Rainy morning to u too @motosubatsu

@Nofel it certainly is! truly grim going through Preston this morning

Why preston
thought u were at southport
or am I wrong

yeah I'm at Southport but I pass through Preston on my way to work

Oh boy
we might share the same train
blackpool south train?

8:09 AM
Dreich morning here in central Scotland too. Actually seems to be autumnal, which is nice

Glencoe is one of my favourite places to stop over in Scotland. Lovely there in good weather.

Is it autumn yet in scotland yet ?? @RoryAlsop
Never been to sctoland

Well, officially the clocks haven't gone back so it's summer... but that's not really how Scotland works. Most seasons happen any day

And frequently more than one season per day.

lol yea
u come in winter, leave by summer
in between all season

8:16 AM
Unfortunately this was put on hold: travel.stackexchange.com/q/102462/1381

It s a fine question

Well, it's not great for Travel, as it is opinion based. But I like the question

I edited it.
Lets see
Almost forgot before today, Travel stack exsited.

So many different Stack Exchange sites

@RoryAlsop Do I need visa to get into scotland, I don't have a british passport

8:29 AM
@Nofel where are you based, and what passport do you have

In uk, manchester. I have pakistani passport

Currently there is no border control between England and Scotland

cool. I need to buy me a new dslr becoming coming there

Definitely - as the Shark said, Glencoe is beautiful, as is Skye, Orkney, the Cairngorms, in fact most of Scotland is amazingly gorgeous

I am castle kind of person
architect is what amazes me.

8:33 AM
@Nofel Nope.. I drive plus you are coming from the other direction

Castles everywhere @Nofel. Of course, our best castles are not Disney type castles... they are very defensible, so not necessarily pretty. Mostly solid buildings on top of a rock...

Yea, back in british raj when british made bridges and buildings in subcontinent is still standing.
I only hate the fact, now they are making the small house
terraced, semi terraced etc
not very thoughtful, Is it same as in scotland?

@Nofel very similar... small houses are a natural outcome when you have a growing population and finite residential land

@nofel - you should look at Fyrish. The estate owner there decided to build the Fyrish monument after returning from the Raj and realising the villagers had no jobs and were starving. He paid them to build a replica of a monument in India. It is very cool - a couple of hours walk up to it. google.co.uk/maps/place/Fyrish,+Alness+IV17+0XH/…

@RoryAlsop wow that is amazing, it gave me goosebumps
damn why I sold my dslr
damnit

8:44 AM
If you play Ingress, there loads of beautiful locations to discover

I sold my DSLR because it was heavy, expensive , and led me to obsess about photography rather than having a good holiday. Now I just use my phone to take photos.

Penshurst place is wow
never heard of Ingress

Probably 2 million regular players worldwide

plus.google.com/photos/photo/118083366175312986673/… just put in my reminders to let me know to visit here when I arrive in scottland

Also, if you use Facebook, look up the Scottish drone pilots group - some amazing pictures there

8:52 AM
facebook is evil
no don't use it

Heh - I wouldn't if I didn't need to
But unfortunately I have 4 or 5 Facebook pages for things
(I'm not a social media kind of person - but apparently the rest of the world uses it)

yea there is a page which direly need my attention
the only reason I left it was so addictive

I stopped using facebook because people just post and repost endless mindless trash.

lol yea
shit abt life
They literally got into the trap of "What's on your mind"
lol

dumb videos, memes, fake news, "bill gates will give you $1,000 if you share this message 100 times", people's babies, people's dogs, my life is so much better than yours, etc. etc.

9:07 AM
excatly.
my ex found out shit loads about me after our breakup
facebook is like a glass house, which let everyone sees u
even when ur shitting
woho, my first edit got approved
on travel

@Nofel i have my facebook all entirely private to anyone but friends to stop this kind of thing

I simply don't post about what's going on in my personal life.

@SnarkShark I simply don't have an account. Facebook can f**k off and die

9:38 AM
arse... was on course for another repcap yesterday only for someone to dv an an answer at half eleven at night. So close, yet so far!

9:57 AM
My 9th consecutive repcap today (not counting weekends, when I don't post)

10:28 AM
I just voted for an answer for deletion for the first time and I can feel my inner tyrant stirring.. by this time tomorrow I will be ruling as Supreme Dictator of the Planet Formerly Known As Earth

I am looking for a image with longest name
do u know any?

@Nofel I'm not sure I'm sure what you're asking for here.

got it, really long one made myself up a image and named it whole manchester
:D

10:48 AM
@SnarkShark You rep capped again. Nice. You get the badge for that yet?

@MisterSortofPositive I need 12 more repcaps for Epic.

Won't be long...

Meh. It's all in the luck & guff....

11:07 AM
@SnarkShark I think I have a good group of friends - I don't get any of those
I only joined Facebook to ensure I could chat with folks in weird places round the world who had stopped sending aerogrammes and postcards. Otherwise I could have lost touch with them entirely.
But now I have to use it for the band, for drone racing meetups, and a range of other stuff
Don't get me started on twitter. Or snapchat!

@RoryAlsop ur into Drones?

Very much - I have a few, ranging from phantoms to flat out racing kit. My son is 3rd in the Scottish League this year, and hoping to improve in 2018. I'm not at that level, but being an electronic engineer I enjoy the repair and rebuild phase...
Look on YouTube for FrogFPV channel - that's mostly my son - both freestyle and league races, but also a bit of me not flying quite as excitingly...
I'm having to unlearn 42 years of flying aerodynamic craft. Drones are not intuitive for me

I have a phantom 3. I didn't use it for a long time and now the batteries are just dead. It's going to cost more to get new batteries than it is to sell it without the batteries.

I always wanted one but so many to go for
can't decide.

11:30 AM
Nice one @RoryAlsop Ur son looks like a cool lad. Love the music on videos

@Nofel if you want to take lovely pictures, get a Mavic. If you want to race at 80mph round a tight course, buy a cheap one. Doesn't matter which, as you will crash it. Once you get better you will know what to get.
@Nofel thanks

u welcome
Mavic is a hell of pricey drone

11:55 AM
Greetings program

Hello from other side of the planet

How may I annoy you today

12:42 PM
We must leave offerings to the supreme donut!

@jserv it was basically impossible to resist

@RhysW We are Homer of Borg, resistance is futile, prepare to be assim... OOOOOO DONUT!

I don't like many sweet foods at all. But pastries and donuts? Yeah. I'm about that.
The Donut hath spoken.

An opportunity for overtime on another project has come up at work. I think I may go for it and put myself forward, but I've already recently been assigned to two additional projects.
I think I'll IM my manager and mention it

@jserv be wary of burnout

1:07 PM
@RhysW I love burnout. I spent most of 2015 and 2016 utterly burned out. It was great.
In all seriousness, I do have a tendency to run myself into the ground
I vaguely recall falling asleep on a park bench during a lunchbreak sometime in August 2015...

@jserv ouch, i've not quite had it that bad
my problem is i take on too much because i don't trust my coworkers with it

@RhysW Yeah, it's silly, really. Sustainability is the most important thing.

Definitely, no point doing 40 hours extra overtime, only to write yourself off for the next 40 because you drove yourself into the ground.

It sounds gimmicky, but I found a book called 'Stress For Success' quite useful for this

I can handle massive amounts of stress, but my BS tolerance is ZERO

1:14 PM
It just draws the comparison between employees and athletes, the idea being that work is stress, and the ideal amount of stress is the point at which you're doing the maximum from which you can recover

@jserv the job I loved most was at a newspaper. deadlines every day! YUM!

@RichardU I hear you, Rich. My job, as in "the service which I am being paid for" is easy. The bullshit that goes around it? That's hard

@jserv I am with u

@RichardU Between myself and you guys, that's what I thought I'd do when I was younger. I loved the idea of seeing something new every day, having a God's eye view of a place, writing it up and editing
Then I interned at a local newspaper and holy God, it is an ugly industry in the UK

So doctor gave me a 3 day diet diary to note down
I had 2-3 sips of cofffee
should i write it down

1:31 PM
Eff it. I sent the IM to my manager putting myself forward for the overtime, with the caveat that I have just joined a couple of other studies
@Nofel Maybe just note the entire coffee when you've drank it all?

@jserv It wont
I get tired of regular coffee

Oh man, those sweet, sweet OT rates. I'm kind of hoping I can jump onboard now.

whats OT

@Nofel Overtime. At my company I think you're paid 1.5 your usual hourly salary? I need to check that

Oh cool.
How was the test

1:34 PM
I forgot to mention, I postponed the test after chatting with my Toptal guy. It turns out R is no longer an option to test on. We paused my account until it's added to the tests again, and in the meantime I just offered to send him some of my old R projects
(I don't use anything other than R, really)

I seen R but donno what it is
wow I wish I can do something like that
I was put on hold for 2 yrs
for nt able to pass the test

There's no guarantee that they'll be interested in seeing my old R projects, unfortunately

Oh its like d3.js

I just thought I'd make the offer to make the best of it, since they seem like a great company

Ur work is so amazing
I love graphs
bt nt a back end prograamer

1:40 PM
I will freely admit I am not a real programmer. My interest in it is only in the stats side of things, and I'm still only just getting started on that

have u seen D3? colinwhite.net/Dash2.5
I love the interactive graphs
@jserv^
Interested?

@Nofel Very cool. Me too, I do like nice data visualisations

yea
In my last company the ceo gave me a demo of what it is
and I was blown away
it is on my do to visit.
list*

I swear my Hospital info dept must have been using something very similar to this

somewhere In time, I am a slow leaerner
Shit virgin company
I twitted bbc that I wanna tell my story how VM screwed me
and they tweet me saying, whats up
lol, they got program to get virgin media word tweet
What R stands for

1:49 PM
Hmmmmm, thinking of a new handle..... "Obnoxious Prime" maybe?

Yeah, I just went for it
I like money

Who doesn't

@jserv I like free time more
:p

@Magisch I like to spend my free time working

2:00 PM
Lucky you
I like to spend my free time doing things I'm already doing for work but under my own discretion
Somehow slaving over code becomes more bearable when you're not forced to do it for money

@Magisch working at soup kitchens, hospitals, anywhere I can volunteer.

nice

@Magisch most of us from my day got into coding because we were already doing it as kids.
@Magisch I want to be wealthy, or at least well off so that I can help more people again.

I got into it because I'm good at math and because I started doing some sql and c++ for wow private servers god knows how many years ago

@RichardU Right on, Rich. I do genuinely miss volunteer work

2:02 PM
I got in for the money and cookies.

@MisterSortofPositive but what about the donuts?

and the donuts and coffee
coffee too

I'm doing low carb atm
works great except you don't get to eat sweet stuff

@Magisch funnily enough my boss got into it because he did mods for counterstrike servers back in the day

What's a reasonable amount of OT to put in for?
Considering I already work 40 hours per week, I mean
I was thinking 8 - 12 hours

2:09 PM
lol @overtime

@Magisch when I was your age, I worked 30+ hours overtime every week

When I'm my age, I cherish that I don't have to to survive

@jserv would it make your weekdays longer, or is it coming in on weekends?

@Magisch become wealthy and survival is not an issue

morning

2:14 PM
@ChristopherEstep good morning, Sir.

@RichardU Yes but you're made of beard stubble and old boot leather
I am a soft, delicate flower
2

@jserv every rose has it's thorn ;)

@jserv i thought you were a donut?

*I am a soft, delicious donut

Morning @ChristopherEstep

2:15 PM
@ChristopherEstep afternoon

man whenever I leave this window, everyone start talking

Uh oh, he's back, everybody, be quiet

@RichardU And then I'm wealthy and depressed because I'm working 70 hour weeks

lol

@Magisch Right now I think I'd like to be wealthy and depressed rather than just depressed

2:17 PM
I mean I losses track on convo

I'd like to be not depressed
@jserv So you can cry into your pile of money?

@Magisch Wealth is a wonderful cure for depression
3
@Magisch I've been well-off, if not wealthy, I've been poor, and I've been homeless. Care to guess when I was happiest?

@RichardU For poverty induced depression, yeah

When I get paid
50% just go into DD

@Magisch Wealth may not buy happiness, but poverty CERTAINLY doesn't bring it

2:18 PM
There's actually some sanity in what I'm doing, @Magisch, I promise. There are some goals I'd like to hit a little sooner by earning extra money

@jserv Do what you want I'm not judging or in charge of your life

wealth is like a breeze of air to me
come and go
never stays

I'm just saying I wouldn't unless I had a pretty major reason

@jserv true, once you're out of "survival mode" and have a rainy day fund, stress is far less.

I have a "rainy day fund"
well I have enough saved up so I would have some time to find a new job should I lose this one

2:19 PM
@Magisch then earn more so that you can help others survive a storm

@RichardU I'm just generally an ambitious and conniving bastard

@RichardU when were u happy in those time
@Magisch I have none

I'm also a generally incredibly boring person

@Nofel I was happiest when I had enough to live on and didn't have to worry about paying for things. The heater on my house died, so I bought another one, no problem. Car died, I bought another one, no problem.

don't have a car, don't eat out much, don't have expensive hobbies, don't drink, don't do drugs
not because I chose to but just because none of these even interest me

2:21 PM
@Magisch then you should be wealthy beyond the dreams of avarice by now.

@RichardU I'm an apprentice still

I make less then half of minimum wage
what exactly do you expect?

@RichardU and my mrs have a lot of fight due to the fact in the end of my month we r struggling

@RichardU Hey Rich, ever heard of a book called 'Scarcity'? I'd highly recommend it, there's an entire chapter dedicated to the idea of 'slack', how important it is to your mental health to have just a little extra wiggle room

2:22 PM
and get loan from someone and when next pay comes, that little saving goes into paying of loan

It's a study of the mental effects of poverty, generally, it's fascinating

Poverty is also often a cycle
for example I bought a washing machine a year ago. If I didn't save up I couldn't have afforded it and would have spend 2+ hours a week and well over 10$ a week to wash my clothes in town

I am a muslim, our religion forbid, interest, credit or spending more than u can afford

Which comes out to beeing much more expensive then owning a washing machine. The point is being poor is pretty damn expensive

@Magisch i've been there too, it's not a fun place. I might not have the right words to say or the best advice to give, but if you do need someone to talk to i'm just a message away

2:25 PM
generally those r basic things that is what is needed to be happy

I'm an atheist and my common sense tells me to not spend money I don't have on things I don't need or want

That is common sense

@RhysW That wasn't meant as a "I'm depressed right now" but more as an answer to "I'd rather be wealthy and depressed"
juxtaposition as "I'd rather not be depressed at all"

@Magisch gotcha, I wasn't sure and figured it was best to try and be wrong than not try at all!

@Magisch It's interesting how often it's repeated throughout history, though. It's a common theme throughout literature, folklore, religious texts, etc., to absolutely loathe moneylenders
Graeber's book Debt: The First 5000 Years is awesome for this
I don't know why I am recommending so many books today
Gotta get that library job @RhysW recommended

2:33 PM
is it on debt?

@jserv :D you applied yet?

@Magisch if you're wealthy and depressed, you can afford mental health care

Not yet. I'll be putting in a load of applications this weekend

@Nofel if you want to read something interesting, google "Mouse utopia". Summation: Give mice every single thing they need to survive, and the colony goes extinct

@RhysW Including the longer term goals I may have told you about. Found the perfect organisation to take me abroad for a few months, hence the push to earn and save money

2:39 PM
My goals at this point are clear. Stay alive for a few more years and have money to leave to my children.
Greetings fellow bullies ^^^^

WE ARE ALL BIG BAD BULLIES AND SHOULD FEEL BAD.
Or it was a crap question, not sure which.

Q: is this place a message board or place to judge?

ChristeenaI joined this website thinking it was a place to talk with other people and help with issues in the working world. I have asked one question that was put on hold by 5 people for apparently not being relevant enough. I then edited my question to have the grammar police edit it like crazy. Do our ...

@RichardU how did that come into debt topic
or is a sign I am too dependant?

@Nofel it was a new thought
@Nofel It is wise to stay out of debt. The Christians and Jews both follow the proverbs which say "The debtor is the slave to the creditor"

I love the saying
yes very true @RichardU
I been jobless
and my worry was more of how do I pay for car rental and my bills like rent etc

2:46 PM
I taught that to my nephew one time. He loves video games, so I told him would he rather buy a video game for 50 dollars or 80 dollars. Of course, he said 50. I explained to him, buying on credit is like paying 80 for the video game.

more than what I need to eat

@RichardU Indeed sometimes that arrangement was literal, there's a whole history of 'indentured service', where people would take passage to a new country on the agreement that they would pay the fees for their journey back by working once they arrived

@Nofel that's why it's important to earn wealth. You get as rich as you can, honestly, then you become the one in charge of your wealth. My GF gets cars with zero interest because her credit is so good.

Only it was never -quite- enough to get that debt down
Still happens today, in fact
okay, e-mail about the overtime sent

@jserv That was the origin of slavery in America. The first slaves were IRISH, not African. And indentured servants had far worse lives, as if one of them died, so what, but if you had a slave, and he or she died, you had to buy a new one.

2:49 PM
@RichardU my credit rating was screwed by VM

@Nofel what is VM?

and they say we got no record of u chatting with sale person for 6 months contract
Virgin Media, cable service in uk

@RichardU Awesome, Rich. This was one of the first things I wrote about when I entered higher education

they dipped my rating to very poor
The problem comes when I want to return car
I was first in my in laws to get my wife a 0 meter automatic car.
her brother followed and got merc auto
nw she want me to sell if off coz we can save money bt I know she be asking her brother for lifts
making me feel bad for myself.
and saying he got auto

@Nofel it takes time but you can recover. Mine credit rating was so low from hospital bills that nobody would loan me a dollar for a cup of coffee. I came back from that too. :D You can do it too, :D

2:52 PM
so to save myself from misery I pay payment for car
yea, but stress kill u

I see @enderland has been a busy boy with that meta question. I think he single-handedly stopped a lynch mob.

my mom has been there sending me money when I dont have any
when I was jobless
despite higher trading rates.

@Nofel Have faith, my friend. All will be well

yea, just saying that like @Magisch said he got saved for rainy days, I have nada saving
its terrifying
