@GrayCygnus The user presumably would've needed to participate in chat to be able to reply to them. Usernames aren't a unique identifier AFAIK.

i see
I am going to flag for mod the question, as seems to me like a strange behavior

Not sure it's flag-worthy. Someone can probably offer a bounty for that if they really want, or if it's the incorrect reason, that's probably not the end of the world either.

maybe you are right about that
a Meta TWP question would be more fit
in any case
are you considering writing one @Dukeling ? if not I probably will

No, I am not.

12:42 AM
meh, I'll just let it be, lets see if some other users see this odd situation
Goodbye people see you tomorrow

6 hours later…
6:53 AM
@GrayCygnus If the user has been to the chat room in the past one week, then you can @mention them in the chat room, and they would be notified. Otherwise it will just be plain text, and they won't get notified. Moderators can ping any user in a chat room. This is colloquially known as mod-ping or super-ping.

7:09 AM
Could some please point me to the right forum or network for general software practice questions? Starting with a new project; no idea how to begin; enterprise packaged software and asked to understand and make development changes.

@vbNewbie Difficult one, and you'd probably need to break any questions down with fairly specific aims. I'd try Project Management and StackOverflow for some pointers.

@Snark Thanks. Is this the chat for any random chat and advice

Technically, it's for the Workplace stack, but there's a fairly broad and informal brush in terms of topics discussed (mostly informal in nature). Most regulars here are in the USA, so things are very quiet at this time of day.

Kaz
7:59 AM
@SnarkShark But they're about to liven up as the UK crowd appears. Morning ^^

you rang?

9am already. How did that happen.
2

@SnarkShark painfully... how's tricks?

Kaz
@vbNewbie You could also come over to The 2nd Monitor (Code Review). Lots of experienced people in there who are usually happy to help people out.

@motosubatsu tired, emotional, snappy. Thanks for asking.
Is it just me, or does this question have a fairly clear goal?

8:06 AM
@SnarkShark we should start a club :)
@SnarkShark it does.. i think the closure was largely motivated by the fact that the bulk of the question comes across as a rant

@motosubatsu The drinking kind of club, or the sit-around-and-talk-about-it-openly kind of club?
Well, that's my 10th consecutive repcap sorted.

@SnarkShark I'm not a big drinker..but I'd be inclined to inquire as to whether it's too much to ask for both?

8:23 AM
My vote goes to drinking.

@motosubatsu this sounds like a good option
morning all

I have no words:

Q: Coworker husband threatened me via Facebook

Mackkroller90I am a cart pusher at a retail store and only worked there for a year now. I have this lady coworker, lets call her "Linsey", who likes to make my life a living hell. All she do is boss me around constantly which it really pisses me off because she has no authority over me. We barely know each ot...

Yeah, I flagged that one for deletion.

@SnarkShark yeah... it probably needs to go. At the risk of sounding like a newbie how do you vote for deletion?

Use the 'flag' button and mark it for moderator attention. At least that what I do.

8:39 AM
Why is the question getting deleted? Other than being a bad thread

Apparently, that's not the way to do it. My flag got rejected.

@SnarkShark I just had dig through the help pages.. seems like you have to wait for it to be on hold for two days before you can vote for deletion

Fair enough. It'll sink far enough in two days for it not to be on anyone's radar anyway.

@jserv It probably needs to go simply because the OP will be on the receiving end of a pile-on.

It sounds like the question has already been adequately answered in the comments, anyway

8:51 AM
No it hasn't. The real answer is "Quit your job, find something else in another store, and quit bitching about people on Facebook"
He probably deserved whatever hassle he got anyway, based on how quick he was to throw internet abuse at someone.

@SnarkShark That's what motosubatsu has said in the comments, you silly goose

@SnarkShark my "real" answer would be along those lines, but probably a bit harsher

Yes, I see my points were covered. Not enough snark though.

I'm so deeply immersed in the Gentlemen Bastards books at the minute that I'd probably suggest something along the lines that my unrestrained snark would probably cross into "I hope a shark tries to suck your c**k" territory
it took me about ten minutes to make my comments sufficiently in offensive to post on SE

I don't do finger food.

8:56 AM
@SnarkShark ROFLMAO

Well, this served as a reminder that there are horrible people in the world: workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/71476/…
Asked a year ago. I wonder how it turned out

@jserv ugh.. if only "Jane" was an outlier, her attitude towards autistic people is perhaps a big more aggressive than most but the core opinions are depressingly common

The most worrying part was the "There is no reason for people like you to be the way you are."
Spoken from a place of total ignorance alongside that nice, open ended 'people like you'.

@jserv yep.. that sort of opinion is behind the depressingly common belief that autistic people could be"normal" if they tried

I kind of hope Jane works in fast food until the end of her life, watching young autistic people earn money and move on to better things
It seems like a fitting fate

9:04 AM
<sigh /> I understand why the "animal" part of a human's brain finds autistic people unsettling but humans supposedly have the intelligence to overcome those sorts of reactions

@jserv christ
i forget how prejudiced some people can be

My nephew is autistic, seven years old. I am concerned about how he's going to cope, having to go through the usual meat grinders of secondary school and work.
I have a feeling it's going to be a lifetime of bumping heads with people like Jane.

@jserv it'd be so much easier if education facilities understood that you can't treat every kid exactly the same and expect it to work to the same degree on all of them

9:20 AM
@jserv I wish I could tell it that's not going to be the case :( Your nephew at least has the advantage of having people like yourself in his life who can help support him

@motosubatsu Thanks, you're right. I'm going to do absolutely everything I can to put him in an advantageous position.
@RhysW It's shocking how harshly any deviation at all is punished. You can't even be a little bit different without suffering some consequences. There's a very narrow scope of people that schools are designed to churn out. But hey, that's a big topic.

9:42 AM
I want to watch Moto GP but I'm at work.
The Struggle

@jserv is there an internet radio stream you can listen to? not quite as good as watching perhaps but might be a good compromise

Morning all.

@jserv your attitude about it genuinely warms my heart :) I don't want to presume what you have or havent looked into yet but there's lots of good books out there to help NT family and friends understand the challenges facing a NAT child that might be well worth a read

What is NAT child

Neuro-Atypical
it's a term used to describe someone who has one of the variety of autism spectrum disorders

10:01 AM
@motosubatsu Not at all, I'm always open to recommendations

10:16 AM
not one I've read myself (yet) but that I've heard nothing but good things about is this one: amazon.co.uk/Reason-Jump-voice-silence-autism-ebook/dp/…

@motosubatsu That's perfect. The teens may be the roughest period, reading that now would be really valuable. I've ordered the hardback and will listen to the audiobook at work.

10:32 AM
Just read about Austim
Still not sure what is it
Is it being overly active?

@Nofel no.. some autistic people can be overly active but it's not always the case and is more of a symptom

Imagine living half of your life alone on an island somewhere, and then suddenly finding yourself in Times Square on a busy evening. Autism is like that.
I'm not sure if that's wholly accurate, but that's what I figured it's like.

the crux of it really is that autistic people brains don't process information or emotion in the same way as a neuro typical brain

Then how does one find out if someone is austim or not

Kaz
@Nofel The term as currently used, covers a very broad range of symptoms and manifestations.

10:38 AM
@motosubatsu its one of those things that's hard to understand the differences between, because no one person can experience both an NT and NAT brain

@SnarkShark it's not a bad analogy actually... the sense of feeling like an alien in surroundings that are "normal" for everyone else

@Nofel it is worth understanding that it's not even a case of 'autistic' and 'not autistic'. As there are so many varying levels of being on the autism spectrum

@RhysW exactly! I struggle to explain what it's like because I can't really understand how NT people see the world just like they can't understand how I experience it
@RhysW this too.. it's not really a binary thing, rather an analogue sliding scale
and not all autistic people experience the same symptoms

Kaz
There are also many dimensions to it.

(NB I hate that word "symptoms" in this context.. it makes it sound like some nasty disease)

10:42 AM
arent we all autistic in one way or another nhs.uk/Conditions/Autistic-spectrum-disorder/Pages/…

As far as I understand it, you're born with the condition and there's recognizable symptoms that can be captured pretty early on. Diagnosis is a lot better now than it used to be in the past.

Kaz
Some of the more common ones:
Lack of social understanding. Being completely blind to the existence of the social dimension.
Need for sensory stimulation & external order. See: Stimming, yelling, many varieties of OCD-like-behaviours. Obsessions with various topics.
A more "extreme" distribution of cognitive functioning. Both on the low end and the high end.

for myself I struggle massively in social circumstances - all the nuances of body language, facial expressions and inflections that (as I understand it) NT people process subconsciously I.. don't.. I have to actively analyse all of those things, and that's very, very hard (not to mention exhausting) to do in "real time"

I can't do facial expression, or I talk in flat tone or use to

Isn't that more in the realm of Aspergers?

Kaz
10:44 AM
My impression is that most people tend to equate "Autism == Poor social skills" as the strongest descriptor.
@SnarkShark Not an official term anymore.

@Kaz because my defination It seem like it

Kaz
It got lumped in with everything else under "Autism Spectrum Disorder"

@SnarkShark Aspergers is one of the Autism Spectrum Disorders, as Kaz says it's not an official diagnostic term any more, but many of us still use it colloquially

The world just passes me by sometimes. I defer to greater knowledge.

Kaz
I find it useful. Because the difference between low-functioning and high-functioning Autism is very different, and it's really useful to be able to indicate which one you're talking about.

10:48 AM
@motosubatsu Yup i know exactly what you mean, me and my boss lost a few hours discussing this and we found so many differences in the way we thought, was really interesting

I also have sensory issues.. I struggle to "turn down" background stimuli. And if I'm tired or stressed it can get utterly overwhelming.

@motosubatsu tell me about it, i use headphones almost my entire waking hours

and if you don't understand what's happening that can be very, very frightening, especially for young people.
@RhysW yep my headphones are one of my best coping strategies

@motosubatsu they are amazing, leaving school (not being able to wear headphones) and getting a job (where they allow constant headphone use) has literally changed my life

@RhysW right now I actually don't have mine on and I'm in a relatively quiet open-plan office with about 25 people. I can hear at least 4 distinct conversations, various keyboards, chairs creaking, my own keys, the aircon faintly humming, the rustle of a disposable coffee cup, someone scratching their leg through their jeans, the click of mouse buttons

10:58 AM
TMI - "someone scratching their leg through their jeans"

and to me none of that is background noise. It's all stimuli that arrive with equal weighting
@SnarkShark lol.. i think it was from the outside, not going to go look and check :)
because of the equal weighting I need to consciously sort through it and that is very tiring
luckily I managed about five hours sleep last night so I'm not especially tired.. otherwise everyone of those sounds would be like someone holding a chalkboard up to my ear and constantly raking their fingernails down it.

Kaz
@motosubatsu Thankfully, I am mostly fine on the sensory stimuli point (a little more sensitive to noise than the average person, but not to a point that's debilitating). The huge difference for me is "Social-Context-Awareness-Mode" On vs Off.

@Kaz the syndrome formally known as Apserger's is commonly referred to as High Functioning Autism these days or HFA
@Kaz My sensory issues aren't as a extreme as some thankfully, but they are still something I have to work around. It's mainly noise for me although strong lights and colours can be a problem sometimes, and I've got a few weirdnesses with textures. My feet are insanely sensitive.. I pretty much have to wear socks 24/7 and even then I can only really cope with a couple of different types of sock fabric!
I'm with you on the social-mode thing - I've been "caught on the hop" a few times where I wasn't on-the-ball, let me guard down or was too tired to cope and I don't exaggerate when I say that I've ruined relationships and friendships through mishandling social context
ugh.. sorry people, I appear to have gone into scattergun verbal diarrhea mode again!
on that note it's lunch time! :)

Kaz
11:16 AM
@motosubatsu I went through about 3 "Destroyed all friendships and alienated my entire school" incidents from the age of 11 through 18 before I finally got something of a basic handle of the rules of the social dimension. Didn't realise I was autistic until 19. It would have saved so much pain and suffering if I'd just known what it was, and where to look to for guidance, a decade before.
But C'est La Vie. At least I got a handle on it before I started my professional career.

Morning all

Moning to u @MisterSortofPositive

@MisterSortofPositive Wagwan.

11:36 AM
I would like one of the options for flagging a comment to be TROLL
Can we make that happen?

All hail Jane's comment on the baby-shower question.

@SnarkShark There was some assHat that comment about "Can she invite a gender fluid, or trans person" I replied, she can invite whomever she wants, preferably someone who doesn't creep her out.

I don't see that on the front page. Link?

Well, since we're talking about autism....
"Gender fluid" meant something altogether different back in my day....

LOL...yeah we have lots of delicate folks in the world now...

11:50 AM
@Kaz yeah definitely the earlier the better.. I didn't realise what I was until I was in my thirties! By which point I'd aged out of most of the (already scant) support services available in the UK

Hey everyone
wow, lots of chat going on.
whats up everyone

12:02 PM
Just had to reboot the coffee machine.

@SnarkShark Hope u didn't pour milk in it because it won't reboot if u did

@Nofel I think they call that a full-fat reset

lol

Hmmm. How many guys sit cross-legged on office chairs?

@SnarkShark holy crap.. what a terrible situation for the Asker and for poor Lily :(

12:15 PM
I know. I tried to answer that one as sensitively as I could.

@SnarkShark it was a good answer, the only thing I would say I'm not sure "play" was the right word to use exactly, Lily's behavior isn't indicative of that to me

Sorry, I've now edited to include longer/more appropriate wording. I'm not sure I like the comment that Lily is a "problem", but I'll not get into that argument.

I'm not sure how you would best describe it - essentially she is trying to be social and make friends, it's just that an inability to read social context combined with one of the other common autistic traits of taking special interests to an extreme level is just so far outside of typical office-norms that it just comes across as bizzare

@SnarkShark +1, i do

@SnarkShark yeah I don't think the commenter was trying to be a dick there but I too dislike the use of the word "Problem"
Lily is just as much a victim here as the Asker is (which I think, to her credit, the asker "gets")

12:22 PM
Yeah. I was trying to avoid the answer of "pass her on to someone else".

@SnarkShark yep I noted that.. and appreciated it :) I was also glad to see the "troll" answer get hammered into the ground in about 3 minutes, helps bolster my faith in humanity a bit

@SnarkShark sometimes that is the best thing to do. People trained specifically for that don't just know what to do, but also know what not to do, to avoid longer lasting damage

Kaz
@motosubatsu Yeah. The key insight to impart to someone who has no experience here, is that to Lily, this is perfectly normal behaviour for people to engage in. Talking about your interests, interacting with other people, doing activities together.
3

Yes, I flagged the "troll" answer as abuse and it got deleted within a minute.

@SnarkShark it must have gone fast, i never even saw it
was it especially bad?

12:25 PM
Just questioned whether the questioner was a troll.
Verbatim: "this just sounds so bizzare that I have to think it's a troll post. If that's not the case - just run. nothing you can do here."
I don't think even Kilsi would bow down to that level.

@Kaz Amen to that!

@motosubatsu I just deleted my autism answer. Yours is better and I don't want to deflect from that.

surprised you deleted your answer, I thought it did a good job of addressing the question of what to do for Lily in a very sensitive wat
*way
although thank you for your kind words about mine :)

I would also like to add that office norms are by no means normal
Unless you count the death of the soul as normal

@jserv definitely.. they are their own weird little suburb of hell

12:30 PM
@motosubatsu To be fair, you have more experience of this than I do. Feel free to take any aspect of my answer as your own though. More than happy for you to do that.

or at the very least they are the social equivalent of a picasso painting

(any rep points I get on answers for the rest of the day is wasted anyway, so no loss there)

@SnarkShark I might just do that thanks. I'll confess I was a bit worried when I was writing mine that my bias might be showing

Kaz
@motosubatsu Well, depending on the office ^^

experience, not bias

Q: Notifying a co worker about an internal job opening you're both qualified for

BmoI have a co worker I work pretty closely with, we have some overlapping job functions but it has some of the same base qualifications that we cover for the business. About two years ago, a job opened up, we both applied and he got it. I was promoted a month later to something similar, but nothin...

Halp, not sure how to make this fit into the rules.
I tried to summarize at the end for it to be a more generic question, but it still go put on hold.
I might just delete it, because it will come down to a matter of opinion but there are two answers with good perspective.

The problem is that there's no right answer here. If you want the job, take it and let him find it for himself (if at all). If you don't want the job, tell him about it. If you tell him and go for it yourself, you're competing against eachother, and that might not be good for your friendship.
Or just flip a coin and live/die by the result.

@motosubatsu it took me a while to get people to understand that standing behind me and watching me is just as distracting to me as talking to me

I hate it when people literally breathe down my neck.

"Just pretend im not here" - If i could i would!

Wow, lots of catching up. Are we trending autism today?

12:51 PM
@RhysW arrrghhh... I'm wincing just thinking about it!

@RhysW Yeah, it's impossible for me to work with someone watching me too.

@RichardU and why is it that director level people seem to think it's like supporting you or something when you're trying to work on a difficult problem.
All I want to do is taze them into unconciousness!
@RichardU seemingly so.. we had a bit of chat about it in here after jserv linked an old question, then I spouted Lots of Random Text(TM) and then a question came up on the stack about it
it's like we're having a theme day :)

My faith in humanity is on the decline

@motosubatsu thankfully my place is really open about that kind of thing, so i can just say "you're distracting me, whats up?" and cut to the chase

What is the CEO in the most recent question thinking

12:55 PM
@RichardU I almost get progressively stupider as soon as someone is watching me. Simple tasks become almost unsolvable puzzles

offloading the care of his vulnerable daughter on some random employee
This made me really legitimately angry just from reading it and I'm not even a parent

@motosubatsu my bosses at least know I know what I'm doing

@RhysW amen to that.. I very nearly lose the ability to type

@RhysW yeah, I need to concentrate on the job and someone standing over me doesn't make it happen.
@motosubatsu me too

@SnarkShark Yeah this is some grade A bullshit
child abuse imo

12:57 PM
@motosubatsu Liked you answer on the sensitive subject too

wtf is the guy even thinking

@SnarkShark On a lighter note, loved your answer on sitting with legs crossed. This to me is a real dumbass question.

@motosubatsu before I attacked the social difficulities, I had the social skills of a hyperactive chimpanzee with a toothcache

@Magisch the CEO is actually the Mother but otherwise I'm with you :)

@Magisch I'm thinking that the daughter would be much better off without a parent like that.

12:59 PM
@motosubatsu same difference
this is some messed up bullshit

@motosubatsu definitely gives lie to maternal instinct, eh?

@RichardU Come now.. bragging isn't a good look :P
@RichardU tbh I wasn't really commenting that aspect there, I'm just a pedant

@motosubatsu It's funny, but I get so embarrassed by social missteps that I obsessed over them, picking up book after book so that I wouldn't embarrass myself again. Now, people say I'm articulate.

@MisterSortofPositive I withheld saying that I gave up sitting cross legged on seats when I was about five years old.

@SnarkShark Well a small edit to your answer will fix it right up. ;-)

1:02 PM
@Magisch it is.. as I said in my answer the CEO might have the best of intentions but she is actually going to be harming her daughter not helping her. And that's even before you consider the awful possibility of her interest in underwear being misunderstood or (god forbid) being taken advantage of <shudder />

@SnarkShark i sit crossed legged at work. I also don't wear shoes.

@motosubatsu Yeah it makes me physically sick just thinking about it
wtf man

@RhysW Do flip flops count as shoes?

I was having a good day and then I have to read this

@RichardU if I ever get the hang of socialness I'll let you know!

1:03 PM
@MisterSortofPositive umm, yeah i guess so

@Magisch Don't let the weight of the world get you down. Focus on what you can control. Its easier that way.

@motosubatsu I accidentally wound up in a sales position, also, the stroke changed my personality to that of an extrovert.

@Magisch The thing is what the CEO has done to the OP on it's own is truly awful from a workplace perspective. being told "no you're job is not that now it's this totally unrelated thing" is crap, and I don't mean to trivialise it in the slightest, but the worst that can happen to her is that she has to find another job. Lily stands a good chance of being scarred for life!
@RichardU I actually did sales myself for a while (I was desperate <sigh />), I'm told that I wasn't that bad actually, other than the fact that I can't "close" to save my life.

@RichardU I used to work retail sales when I first got out of the military.

Bmo
@SnarkShark Thanks for the reply, so I should probably just delete it then? I don't really think it can be clarified. I think the answers are good, they were what I was looking for but if it's not in the community guidelines then it is what it is.

1:08 PM
@motosubatsu We autistics can obsess over things, sadly, for the girl, this seems to have been bras. Who knows, she could end up being a fashion designer specializing in undergarments.

@motosubatsu The worst thing that can happen to OP is allegations of sexual abuse due to a misinterpretation of Lily's self expression

@RichardU I'm an introvert pretty solidly.. didn't realise that strokes could "flip" that. Interesting

As already alluded. I'm not sure a mother who is this out of touch would shy away from using something like that to retaliate against an employee who doesn't want to be her personal caretaker

@motosubatsu Strokes can cause personality changes, yes.

@Bmo I'm pretty sure that you can't delete a question once it's been answered. Just take the advice on board and move on with your life.

1:10 PM
@RichardU I suppose I'd never joined the dots that intro-/extro-version was one of the changes it could cause.

Bmo
Just trying to be a good citizen!

@motosubatsu Yeah, it's like it disabled some of my inhibitions/fears. What's left is far more assertive and genial. If you met me in person, I might remind you of Elim Garak from Star Trek Deep Space 9, or at least that's what I've been told.

@RichardU cool.. I always liked Garak actually, felt he was underutilized on the show!
brb..time to refill the nicotine meter

@RichardU Funnily enough I always loved the Doctor Bashir character, his lunch companion

Just found out that pot noodle with suitable for vegetrain has a pork flavour too
like why
omfg

1:22 PM
Many vegetarians enjoy bacon flavour crisps.

@Nofel most vegitarians are against the slaughter of animals, not their flavour.

@Nofel Maybe add some boiled milk?

@jserv When the series first came out I found Bashier to be a bit whiny and annoying, on subsequent viewings later I think I did him a disservice, he's actually got some depth to him
ahh.. feeling better with my nicotine levels topped off, I think the "Lily" question may have unsettled me somehwat

@motosubatsu He was meant to be young and naive, but I loved seeing a talented, highly moral character trying to navigate that world

*somewhat

1:24 PM
@RhysW Which reminds me, I'm all for cultured (slaughterless, lab-grown) meat

@MisterSortofPositive na it will make milk sour, don't wanna spoil the milk, it reserved for kettles
@RhysW they should be bannned

Which isn't a viable economic solution just yet, but I am impressed we're able to do it

@jserv yeah it was kind of like seeing someone step from the highly idealized vision of the future that Gene envisioned into the grittier world of reality and how they would handle that

@motosubatsu Exactly. I don't know how to feel about saying it, but of all the characters I probably related to Bashir the most

@jserv same here.. if some clever so-and-so in a white coat can grow me a burger that tastes the same as one sourced from a cow sign me the hell up!

1:27 PM
@jserv they are doing those lab grown burgers at the moment, i look forward to them being cheap enough to mass produce

@jserv it's nothing to be ashamed of!

@Nofel vegitarians or pork flavoured noodles?

pork flavoured noodles saying it is suitable for vegitirian

@Nofel you can make something pork flavoured without harming animals

pork, ham is forbidden to us
and I am thinking
the other things i ate
were they not-halal as well

1:29 PM
@Nofel it isnt made from pork or ham

then what

From an artificial recreation of the chemical that makes pork taste like pork
Our taste senses are easily fooled

@SnarkShark thanks for your comment on the answer.. I couldn't think how to word it that you had given permission elsewhere for me to quote you. Also if I had said that you had deleted because you thought mine was better I'd have just looked like a d**khead :)

@Nofel Dried Noodles (60%) [Wheat Flour, Palm Oil, Salt, Firming Agents (Potassium Carbonate, Sodium Carbonate)], Maltodextrin, Potato Starch, Sugar, Tomato Puree Powder (3%), Red Pepper, Flavour Enhancers (Monosodium Glutamate, Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate), Palm Fat, Yeast Extract, Salt, Spices [Garlic Powder (0.5%), Pepper, Ginger, Coriander, Cumin], Flavourings, Onion Powder,
Potassium Chloride, Caramel Syrup, Onion Juice Concentrate, Smoke Flavouring, Sunflower Oil, Sauce Sachet (4%): BBQ Sauce [Water, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Tomato Paste (16%), Molasses, Modified Corn Starch, Spices, Smoke Flavouring, Salt]

@RhysW Need to get some of that smoke flavouring.
