I liken CoCs to the popularity of loyalty oaths. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalty_oath Both are designed to try to control behavior deemed inappropriate by whomever writes them. On the surface, neither seem to be problematic, but the enforcement is always the key. I'm actually against both of these for this very reason. In the 50's California required all state employees to disavow all "radical beliefs". Which was/is a pretty good way of just disposing of people that say things others don't like. Oddly, there's still a "loyalty oath" in California, though it's pretty mild. — Steve Sether 2 mins ago

The point being, it seems we're in this time again of authorities trying to control others whose behavior they don't like. The vagueness of loyaty oaths, or codes of conduct, or whatever the thing is you're supposed to obey, and the enforcers of such codes (almost always a "king decides" sort of environment) only leads to abuse. — Steve Sether 2 mins ago

@PeterMortensen Discourse is interesting. It's aim seems to be essentially solving the "toxic d-bag" problem of internet forums. It seems to lack any sort of up/downvote system. Which... if I think about it is likely a good thing, and avoids the "hive mind" problem, and discouraging saying anything that isn't wildly popular. Still, how do you get quality to rise to the top, but avoid "hive mind" syndrome? The up/down system is supposed to do just that, but of course the problem is that nobody really agrees on what "quality" is when something is political. That's why it's political. — Steve Sether 36 secs ago

In many situations, an even-handed, less outraged approach is a better way to go. Say what you think is wrong, suggest improvements, be open dialogue (e.g. the open letter)... Unfortunately, SE hasn't responded to that lower-key approach and they have a history of not responding, carrying on, and just letting the unhappiness fade away into the past. Their actions in this sequence of events have made it clear that they don't really value the existing community, so I don't think it's outrageous that people are questioning whether "the community" has a future. — Ward - Reinstate Monica 43 secs ago

I'm not convinced that - in the longer run, constant, high volume outrage helps either. I for one, am pretty much fatigued by a lot of it. Twitter/HNQ did eventually result in change though and hasn't burned as long as it has. Where SE has acted wrongly I get the mistrust. Simple: nobody has pushed the required change, or someone did and SE staff didn't approve the change yet. SEDE is a weird beast: it's open source, not part of SE codebase, and using SE actual database, not API. Posting something wildly unpopular will definitely draw some negative emotional feedback, and that's a problem, albeit hardly a Meta specific one; if I walk into a gathering of conservatives and start arguing socialist talking points (or vice versa) there will be less objective evaluation of my arguments and more of "you suck!", too. Not sure there really is a fix to that. Around here, you have a reasonable chance your argument will at least be considered. Meta discourse culture strikes me as really good in that regard, no thanks to the system but because many people are good debaters. — Pekka supports GoFundMonica 36 secs ago

@Tink, I will not vote to reopen this post (as I explained above), so we agree here. Consider, however, that other answers could very well complement and / or challenge the only answer out here, but they cannot be posted now, which was my point. Also, that only answer standing at +10/-5 as we speak would warrant consolidation / opposition I believe. Then again, that's only my opinion, and as I said I won't vote to reopen until someone (not me) removes the HK references, because it's hopeless otherwise. — Frédéric Hamidi 1 min ago

@ModusTollens, I know that voting on meta often has some meaning like agreement/disagreement. But still, one could explain the agreement/disagreement besides just the simple vote. In addition, this whole voting on meta thos show disagreement makes more sense in terms of voting for different suggestions/answers or voting for a question that is a proposal. But, that is not the case here. The question suggest a discussion and some people decide to unilaterally vote that this discussion should not be held, without giving some clear example what is wrong with the proposal. — Sextus Empiricus 56 secs ago

The problem with "canonical knowledge" is that all but the most erudite (and thus generally off-topic for SO) becomes obsolete quite quickly. eg I'm working with asp.net core, and my searches bring up answers for v2 solutions, which are useless to me as I'm on v3. @gbjbaanb No, it means_some_ people don't agree, or like what I'm saying You seem to be missing my point entirely that the "agree/disagree" is just a way to bury ideas that 51% of the group doesn't like. The point of the "hive mind" is that it presents a distortion of what people actually think. It's more like 60/40 based on up/down votes, but that's not apparent at all based on a -7 score. 60/40 is an extremely controversial idea, especially considering you only need to convince 1/10 to make it 50/50. — Steve Sether 42 secs ago
