This has to be the most reasonable thing I've read all day, and they should be applied to the FAQ. Any organization is free to have whatever CoC they decide, but their actions/posts should embody it. If they state in the CoC they want to be inclusive in terms of religion, then they should follow trough with that in all their posts (even if there are 0 religious people using the website). Anything less renders the whole CoC meaningless. — KGS 1 min ago

@Rob Nope, apparently I'm still missing it. Firstly, I didn't post a link to the FAQ in my comment. Secondly, the answer that your first link points to doesn't address the question of top tags. It's about duplicate questions. — sempaiscuba 5 secs ago

I'd include that detail in the question whilst you're at it. I was tempted by a similar scenario, but with reopen votes, but it seemed unethical at the time. @BenLee I think lawsuits are incredibly difficult to win, take years to come to a conclusion, and unlikely to resolve the real issue. Lawsuits are about $$, not justice. I'm also not convinced saying someone "violated our CoC" is really something that's defamatory. Money isn't made on the Q+A part of the enterprise; SO is one of the very few iconic sites that are associated with money making parts of the enterprise; and external competition to SO isn't currently so strong that a potential drop in SO health could quickly translate to a drop in its relevance/popularity/market share. — Jirka Hanika 1 min ago

The actual statement [...] isn't really referenced all that often that's because no one outside SE knows what that statement was, or even if there was one at all. That's sort of the point. What we can tell from leaks (since removed) is that Monica seems to be perfectly ok with requested pronouns, even neopronouns like "xe", except for one case she has a strong grammatical hiccup about: singular "they". Apparently she was asking whether it would be acceptable for her to avoid pronouns altogether when the requested pronoun is "they". One side note: A part of constructive criticism is focusing on whatever the person did instead of focusing on the person themselves (So no 'you cannot prove or disprove' but 'this post doesn't prove or disprove'), another is to give recommendations on how to improve (which can be inferred from the example comment, but would be better if spelled out directly). So perhaps this comment isn't as constructive as it seems to be at first glance. — Tinkeringbell ♦ 2 mins ago

@Tinkeringbell There is always person behind the post, focusing on content and not on person means that you don't care whether person is black, white, man, woman, alien, dog... high reputation user, low rep user. While one can always write anything tad better, like you did show in your example "no 'you cannot prove or disprove' but 'this post doesn't prove or disprove'", saying that first version is not constructive criticism and second is, IMO is just ridiculous. — Her Majesty Queen of ARC 2 mins ago

But for many people the difference between the two is almost invisible and it may require tremendous amount of effort to adjust writing habits. Yeah, we know about this. Can be bydesign or declined. The issue (discussed elsewhere) is that for really old duplicates we used to inline the duplicate post links. Subsequently we record them in their own db table. But for posts preceding this the inline links exist. And for [reasons] we are unable to extract the duplicate links and delete the inlining from 100% of them. So these will look like your screenshots - the post notice just says that there is a duplicate, but the links are part of the question text. — Yaakov Ellis ♦ 1 min ago

And this is why I hope that Monica wins her defamation case in such a way as to make people in positions of power think twice before they go on record implying that someone is a bigot when there is absolutely no reason to believe that's true and a lot of evidence to the contrary. @YaakovEllis The issue isn't that the SE API is still providing the V1 reasons. The issue is that the new notices don't say why the post was closed, other than just "off-topic". This is a reduction in information provided to the OP, and is inconsistent with other notices. The "off-site resource" close reason is the only current, stock, off-topic reason for which the new post notices don't say the actual off-topic reason. The SE API info is in this answer because it's the only current way for someone to determine the actual reason the question was closed, not because the SE API should change. — Makyen 25 secs ago

At some point...I feel like calling a community toxic is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It implies the negative value of participation in it, and makes it incredibly easy to dismiss their concerns at the same time. It also makes the community hostile to the speaker, which in turn reinforces their opinion that they were correct. The word just doesn't belong in any sort of corporate culture or employee opinion when referring to the community. — fbueckert 1 min ago

As far as many of us are concerned, it needs to comply with CC BY-SA 3.0 because SE has not sufficiently proven that they have the legal ability to systematically convert everything to 4.0 without consent. But also, in the terms of images, many of them are not original content, and are already grabbed from sources that the author did not create, so whether or not CC is even relevant in those examples is debatable. — Web Head 1 min ago

I prefer "-1, [explanation]" suitable for character count purposes. It is shorthand for "I am the one/I am one of those who downvoted, and here's why." It's a juxtaposition that serves a rhetorical purpose. Certainly, some users can mean it as rude as it is a phrase that has been used in rude contexts on the internet for a while. However, this site does not have that problem in my view. Downvotes are often reversed, the proceeding explanation is often one on a factual basis, and when there is no comment, users will frequently say "Downvoters, can you explain why?" so it's also preemptive. — The Anathema 40 secs ago

might be worth flagging one of them with a custom moderator attention flag and letting the mods know that they may need some help with writing good answers on SO, in particular, I would expect this flag to be declined, with a message to the effect of, "that's the community's job". — De Novo supports GoFundMonica 1 min ago

Further the question is a wiki with a request for users to "Post your favorite or most inspirational snippet" yet it is not marked wiki at this time — bobobobo 1 min ago

@Trilarion The original wording of this post is Should we learn to accept the demise of "community"?. Such negative wording makes the question seem to have its seed in an attack (ie the title reads "your community is doomed".) That was closed, and the current wording of the title Are we witnessing the demise of "community"? still has the same flavour. — bobobobo 2 mins ago

@bobobobo "Are we witnessing the demise of "community"?" The answer is of course, that nobody knows and only time will tell. For that reason one could close the question right away. But seeing everything that challenges the status quo as attack goes to far in my book. As long as the question is itself civil and has something in it that can be reasonably discussed I'm not against giving it a chance. — Trilarion 31 secs ago

A useful alternative implementation is: Instead of "increasing the length", make links count as 10 characters (up to a limit of 1023? characters of real length); that would allow a few questions with long titles or a couple of crazy long Google URLs - but if your message is solely textual then rambling on would be prevented. — Rob 2 mins ago

TLDR: we've replaced meta with surveys and will segment the feedback by race/age/gender. Goodbye discussion — Kevin B 1 min ago

It sounds like the public nature of feedback is going away for private-solicitation only feedback. That’s an interesting solution, but for all intents and purposes, yes, meta is going away. Of course, I’m having to read between the lines because the writing is neither direct nor clear. — George Stocker 1 min ago

Are you interested in anything specifically? This is not a broad discussion forum, so a bit of direction seems necessary if you want more than a large, incoherent collection of opinions. — Mast 2 mins ago

I suspect the explanation for that particular phenomenon needs to be sought in the social dynamics of the New York (and U.S. in general) tech scene. — Pekka supports GoFundMonica 27 secs ago
