Welcome to Meta! I'm not sure which search brought you here but the problem you describe will not be answered on this specific site. To get an answer from users that have the expertise about the topic of your question you'll have to find and then re-post on the proper site. Check How do I ask a good question and What is on topic on the target site to make sure your post is in good shape. Your question is definitely off-topic on Meta and is better deleted here. — Glorfindel 9 secs ago

I have plenty of answers that were accepted but not upvoted and that I think are excellent answers. The tags I look at don't get much traffic, and the askers are very often new accounts/users and they often don't bother to learn the rules or the ethos of the site. In fact, for the same reasons I also have many answers with zero score, not accepted, and no other answers are present. There are plenty of help vampires out there who simply take an answer and go away, never to return. — James Reinstate Monica Polk 1 min ago

@Glorfindel - A quick example of how to extract the juice, how it tastes is another question. --- Create categories (EG of one category: rep= 1-99, 100-499, 500-999, etc. -- another: number of up/down to get 0 -- yet another: months of membership. -- etc.). Create a few dozen pigeonholes and choose the most full, use those few pigeonholes to plot one attribute versus another. -- Not that it says anything about "behavior" just what the person in the pigeonhole looks like. Maybe: "less than a year with one down and one up vote" . — Rob 53 secs ago

@PeterMortensen Personally that's the direction I think things should go - a more active site for new developers and learning and a second more sedentary site for "canonical knowledge." One of the long term problems that SO has been facing is that given enough time, most of the non-"long tail" questions have been satisfactorily answered (baring new APIs). As such, we would expect the active user base to go down. This evolution of the site is supported in part by all of the "closed as duplicate" questions over the years. — anonymous 1 min ago

@PeterMortensen I don't disagree that SE screwed up. But the reaction to it is just over the top. This is why I categorize this as "outrage culture". 20 grand in donations to a lawsuit? We're not at IMDB yet. But quite honestly, SE is a for-profit company with investors. While I like community, I'm under no illusion this is supposed to exist for public good, like a non-profit, so I don't know there's really any social contract here. — Steve Sether 1 min ago

@ShadowThePrincessWizard To me it reads more like the author is excited to share what they are working on and it was supporting a greater point they were trying to make about SE working on things they've previously committed to. I can see why it could come across as annoying, but the author would have no reason to intentionally annoy their audience, IMO. They screwed up but the point is they're not doing anything to fix it, which they very easily could have by retracting the libelous statements and ideally reinstating her, although just doing the former would probably have taken away much of the outrage. @PekkasupportsGoFundMonica Please tone down your language. The way you're communicating is exactly the problem with internet culture. It's all outrage, and all emotions. We need a lot less of that in the world today, it's doing far more harm than good. The point of my post is a (likely pointless) attempt at trying to provide some sort of perspective here. The point of my post is a [...] attempt at trying to provide some sort of perspective here so is mine :) and if the tone in my last comment came across as overly agressive I apologize. I think the outrage is because many of us do feel there is a social contract that was broken, for one because we were explicitly told so for years, and for another because being an invested contributor in a SE site requires a much greater altruistic impulse than, say, Facebook. — Pekka supports GoFundMonica just now

Facebook don't care about me and will inflict whatever features it wants on me; that's a given. But I'm a consumer there. Not so much here - people here donate slices of their very well-paid time in order to - at the risk of sounding hyperbolic - build something that is of some greater good to the world. The profit motive was always a given but there was a huge implied promise that it would be balanced out with the interests of that greater good — Pekka supports GoFundMonica 47 secs ago

The fact this had to be pulled a few days before the release doesn't bode well. This change must have been discussed extensively at senior executive level. Last minute refinements, in particular just before the weekend, and not to forgot Thanks Giving suggest there were serious flaws in the original implementation. The flaws were at least serious enough to pull the release and the SE development team must be working throughout the weekend to get this delivered. — Alex 40 secs ago

No way to stop everyone from having their say without being unfair. Catija, I believe your company wants to focus more on enterprise products. Delaying a community release without any form announcement is fair enough However, this becomes a different matter if you start having paying customers. Senior SE management should ask themselves if they could have reasonably known this feature couldn't be delivered in time taking into account the entire company was in a four day meet up. Senior management should also ask themselves if they should have announced this delay given it was announced with great fanfare. — Alex 2 mins ago

This thread also highlights what's wrong with any sort of discussion with anything remotely "political". People use downvotes as "-1 disagree". Why that may be OK on a topic that's factual and has evidence that someone can find "truth" from, it completely fails on political topics. I think this is what fans the flames of partisanship and increased polarization. We should try to resist that! This is supposed to be a site where people come together to learn. It seems we've gone to exactly the opposite here. That sort of polarization and factionalism is what destroys community. — Steve Sether 2 mins ago

Replacing places like Meta with all its problems with a Discourse instance would be a really good idea. They're putting so much thoughtful work in encouraging constructive, well, discourse in the product. For example, they place a lot of value on reading. You earn Discourse's equivalent of reputation points by hanging out and getting to know what other people are saying. That's fantastic.Pekka supports GoFundMonica 2 mins ago

Yes, that's spectacular. All of this was (supposedly) in the name of a worthwhile effort to ensure users didn't have to justify, explain or defend their gender (which happened quite often on chat, but very rarely elsewhere). Then after all this, a staff member sees a user's account with a request to please just use their name (not uncommon I believe among people trying to figure out their identity), and just clumsily deletes it from the user's profile, assuming it's invalid trolling, forcing that user to explain and defend exactly what this was all supposed to guarantee would be respected. — user56reinstatemonica8 1 min ago

Proves to me beyond any doubt that this was never motivated by any care for LGBT+ users, many of whom have explained in detail how the situation is much worse now; and was always merely about one or two individual members of staff exploiting the name of inclusivity to get their own back on some individual users who they never forgave for daring to disagree with them. — user56reinstatemonica8 48 secs ago

Even with the explicit warning, the list formatting really makes it look like the cited author is quoting the following text, not the preceding text. It doesn't help that (maybe this is just my browser?) the markdown renders with a significantly larger gap above than below the citation. — goldPseudo 39 secs ago

Atrocious anti-logic in this "answer". @Inactive-ObjectingExtremism is correct. It's far too easy to rush all the way to the "bigot" (and similar) labels. And it's for the reasons that "racist" is commonly used, because it's nearly impossible to make the statement "I'm not a bigot" without sounding like one. Just because being a bigot often means that you don't realize you're a bigot doesn't mean that denying bigotry defines bigotry. — tgm1024 2 mins ago

@SextusEmpiricus, oh c'mon. Is there a potential win for this pedantic comment? This is the kind of thing that makes substantive discussions ever harder. — tgm1024 1 min ago

@goldPseudo feel free to edit. Usually the name of the author comes after the quotation. But if I added the dates and nsmes immediately after, the whole text looks like a giant quotation 😟 If there's a better solution, please go ahead. — Mari-Lou A 2 mins ago

Careful here, you're asking a question about the new policy. I infer from your username that you probably know you could be banned and slandered for that. — WBT 21 secs ago

Wouldn't it be best to post this on Meta.SO? You're more likely to have a SO moderator see it. — Peilonrayz 29 secs ago

@Mari-LouA I've suggested an edit which consistently formats the authors within the blockquote; this should alleviate any confusion. — goldPseudo 2 mins ago
