@Schrödinger'scat The algorithm starts by trusting a few hard-coded users, and then trust flows through them at a limited rate to the users they trust, and through those users at a limited rate, etc., with each user consuming one unit of trust until there is no more trust to flow. It gets a little more complicated to deal with users who trust each other, but those details aren't important. Users that aren't connected to the trust source never get any trust, while the number of users that can receive trust through a confused user is limited by the amount of trust that is allowed to flow through — rockwalrus-stop harming Monica 30 secs ago
@rockwalrus-stopharmingMonica Replace "few hard-coded users" by "few competent and fair referees" and we get rather close. ;-) That is, if one could make sure that there is a group of neutral and competent referees, a lot of problems could be solved. That assumes 2 things. That we don't have the support of the community , and that any replacement will be any better. This has been meta policy for quite a while, especially in more... emotive posts, and nearly all of meta is emotive. Its also rather frustrating to find something that should have been gone a long time ago flagged a month or two after it was posted. Comments are meant for clarification. If you really feel you want to call for mods to be removed, maybe ask as a question? I'm sure you'd get a few upvotes even. — Journeyman Geek ♦ 2 mins ago

It is like democracy. Mostly it sucks, but we don't have better system. Problem is not in voting and reputation system on their own, it is more that we don't have any additional tools to ensure really bad answers are either removed or marked as bad (beyond the comment) and similar. Also this is why it is of utmost importance that old, knowledgeable users stay and contribute if nothing more then to help cleaning up such things or commenting at least. But everything SE has done lately is going in completely opposite direction. — Her Majesty Queen of ARC 2 mins ago

This is incredibly frustrating. I don't understand how the incentives are supposed to work, this is for supposedly saving the tactical down-voter exactly one point? There are so many times I need to edit a vote because I realized that my perception was wrong. And now it's forever stained in the wrong direction. The voting system is not a rating system. That's interesting because I've caught myself doing the following: 1) I read an answer; 2) I like it; 3) I go to upvote it; 4) Then I see the answer already has 3 upvotes; 5) I ask myself whether the answer merits 4 upvotes and conclude not; 6) I don't upvote the answer I like. (On reflection, this isn't entirely irrational. It means that a future answer which is excellent will have more chance of replacing a current answer which is good.) — Rounin says Je suis Monica 31 secs ago

I like it. I feel that it Stack Overflow should generally be a platform where new users are encouraged to answer rather than ask questions. @Rounin indeed it might work for some like that (also when it would be a rating system, people might change their rating based on what the current rating is, in order to change the average more strongly towards their favored rating; although I have a feeling this behaviour is decreasing). But this makes the variation in the voting extremely random. It will depend a lot on whatever people happen to stumble on the question, and in addition in which order. I believe as well that quality and sustainability of the voting system is related to the increase of low rep users 'disturbing' the quality control. However, I believe your suggested solution does not go far enough in restraining low rep contributor's answers (answers which stimulates the idea that low quality questions are ok). There are two problems with it. 1) there are many contributors with few answers and it is more like the number of low rep contributors that needs to be restricted instead of number of answers per low rep contributor. 2) high rep contributors (with a small amount rep) will just as well spoil the game and answer low questions. — Sextus Empiricus 1 min ago

@SextusEmpiricus as someone already pointed out, I forget who, if a question stays on the home/front page an hour or so, it stands a chance of beeing seen, and maybe of being voted. I agree that the question is trivial and if sufficient people vote to close for that custom close reason I would be fine (would still vote to reopen because being trivial is not really a valid close reason afaik). But as it looks, some people just used an obviously wrong close reason in order to get the question closed no matter what. This is not right. Downvoting is fully sufficient, it will get auto-deleted soon anyway. After all the question is neither well researched nor useful. Still 11 people upvoted it even. — Trilarion 8 secs ago

Anticipating this kind of answer is exactly why I changed my mind and supported closing this question, despite (I think) previously voting to re-open it. You're making sweeping statements based on an incomplete, selective reading of a user's incomplete summary of a Buzzfeed journalist's incomplete summary of a situation involving a different community and different organisation where no-one outside a handful in that organisation know what really happened. That's not helpful. Maybe in future we can learn from Wikipedia's situation - if/when the actual facts are known. — user56reinstatemonica8 2 mins ago

Just today, we had someone on Politics.SE vote to close a question with the custom close reason of, and I quote, "the lowest note of a piano is an A, not a C". The question itself had nothing to do with pianos. The comment was deleted, but I would expect a lot more meaningless close vote reasons if this system went ahead. It's one of the reasons downvoters aren't forced to leave comments either, despite that proposal coming up every other week or so. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it provide meaningful feedback. — F1Krazy 1 min ago

duplicate covers what you ask about, "questioner can have a chance to send it to a jury of randomly selected users or mods excluding the initial close voters and the questioner". The system works that way and reopens closed questions — gnat 1 min ago

The onus is on posters to read the things put in front of them. There's several documents that are, on first post, and at least one requires the poster to acknowledge they've read it. Granted, we can make it easier for more information to find, but at no point are new users absolved of responsibility for this actions. They want to post, they have to live with how it's received. Don't like the reception? Well, reading the stuff put in front of you is a good start. — fbueckert 2 mins ago

A lot of stuff that surrounds moderating actions from users is either not in the public SEDE instance and if it is, it is anonymised / lacking a userid field. Helpful flags sits probably in the same bag as the people reached statistic: not in the user table, so not available in the Public schema. — rene 13 secs ago

Your proposal sounds, interesting, but I'm not sure if there would be sufficient demand because, obviously, it would be very expensive for the user asking for the review/appeal. Mileage may vary, but I would want at least $50, up front, to review a closure upon request by another user. Some users might be expecting to appeal to such a,panel of skilled and experienced developers at no cost. Yes, that sounds ludicrous, but that is what some users will understand from your request:( — Martin James 1 min ago

Hi Chandhu Vutukuru, welcome to Meta! I'm not sure which search brought you here but the problem you describe will not be answered on this specific site. To get an answer from users that have the expertise about the topic of your question you'll have to find and then re-post on the proper site. Check How do I ask a good question and What is on topic on the target site to make sure your post is in good shape. Your question is definitely off-topic on Meta and is better deleted here. — Glorfindel just now

@fbueckert so then so if someone reads the FAQ and tries their best to follow the guidlines then they are still screwed. which then means that sites should look at their FAQs not just once a year and make sure it is clear concise. — Ben Madison 35 secs ago

The users reading the FAQ and trying to follow the guidelines are also going to be the ones responding to feedback and updating their question based on that. They aren't going to be the ones that have much issue with quality standards. I agree we can make it easier to find the guidelines, but I strongly disagree that the onus is on anyone but the new user to attempt to follow them. — fbueckert 1 min ago

This will likely come down to site culture. For Arqade, we explicitly do not want flags about duplicate answers; use your downvotes, and let the low quality review queue take care of it. SO may be different, though, so this might be better asked there. — fbueckert 2 mins ago

Prepared options are worst, it was asking to attach your close vote with your own stated reason. You are making the call to close a question be specific. That way a questioner can directly address the person who voted to close. Having long comment sections trying to hash out what wrong with the question is highly unproductive. It is simply a slip, you voted to close down, so me the questioner is going to write back on the vote, ok here is why you might be wrong or hey i fixed it take a look. — Ben Madison 49 secs ago
