Anyone know if foliage disintegration is broken in Alpha now?
None of the leaves are seeming to disappear on their own...
wait, foliage is meant to disintegrate on its own?
you mean I don't have to hack at the entire bunch of leaves after chopping it down?
Well you shouldn't have to. :)
It used to disintegrate fairly quickly.
neat.
But that appears to have changed, so I don't know.
06:10
Oh god no, the fires, they spread so quickly.....
Smokey the Bear is going to be piiiiissed.
06:28
Every night now I'm tortured by the final screams of flaming cows...
Actually this is pretty handy. Animals continually spawn inside the Burning Land and promptly fall to the conflagration, meaning all I have to do is walk around picking up feathers and pork chops.

The Word of Notch
Minecraft Alpha 1.2.1, Minecraft Server 0.2.3

The server update is not mandatory, but you might want to update just to make sure.

@JavadocMD Yeah it's a bug in the new version..
> Reverted mob spawning back to the old code, it was far to annoying. I have plans on what to do with this.
woo!
@badp I'd like to buy you a copy of Minecraft
o.O
er, thanks. You know what my email is I take it :)
yep... stay tuned.

that skin in .png and .xcf
(my skin now has an additional Steel Fury logo on the back that is not included in the above .png)

lol.. very nice
total minecraft noob here. in fact I haven't even played... but judging from the questions is this game a bit like scribblenauts where the choice of play is essentially limitless and mindboggling? or am i misunderstanding how it works..
@MichaelPryor Yeah, it's one of those sort of games. Sandboxy, emergent, free-roaming, etc.
The "game" is whatever you want it to be.
The world has just enough danger that you're forced to do something about it, but not so much danger that it's a constant struggle, at least once you know what you're doing.
You just get caught up in creating something that came from your own head and the next thing you know you're late for work aagh AFK running to catch my bus
@MichaelPryor yep.. and different between single and multiplayer (at least for now, since damage doesn't work on multiplayer)..
on my single player world I'm mining at night, exploring and gathering (and planting) during the day
on my multiplayer server I'm just exploring and building and terraforming (with unlimited generated resources)
@MichaelPryor you are in a world of cubes. Left click to deconstruct. Right click to construct. Baddies hurt. Oh, you can craft too.
That is all.

@Brant that's beyond awesome :D

digga plz
> ^ "If oil ever appears in Minecraft, I'm ready to extract it!"
@badp I think this morning's patch fixed the behavior, somehow.
* Attempted to fix the portal dupe bug where you could exit through a different (new) one than the one you entered through.
cute slime is cute.
I have never seen slimes
I don't know why
14:18
i saw one before knowing they existed and freaked out
I've met one near bedrock.
it was a big one too
By complete accident, it spawned in an area flooded with water.
Turns out slimes can't outpace flowing water. That slime was effectively pinned in a corner.
I kept it there until a creeper asploded it.
hehe
Mine-cart ride to hell:
ruh roh.
14:23
oh god no!
It's time to take out the LAZOR
FIRE YOUR LAZOR, QUICKLY!
mod idea: the watch lazor from goldeneye 007
14:36
this game has made me want to learn 3D programming, to be able to understand and possibly build something similar
started investigating XNA4 and so far was able to render a cube to the screen.
3d is no joke!
Yeah, if you want to get decent framerate you just have to get your hands quite dirty
hopefully i have time to continue learning it

You know what we should do if there will be another Minecraft "free weekend"?
talk Notch into putting a few free copies for prize to the new, top contributor(s) in the minecraft tag that doesn't otherwise own the game.
15:27
That's an awesome idea
I don't think he's ever going to need another free weekend, though.
eh, I'm not sure
Consider the day the beta will go live, for example.
15:42
he seems open to cross-site collaboration,.. i.e. the texture competition
but he's also really ... locationist?... he would only hire swedish developers
and that site doing the texture pack contest is a swedish company
16:36
16:52
my new PC was just shy of $3k... alienware, liquid cooled, 12GB ram...
and the 16x16 pixel textured minecraft gets the most playtime
Those 3 images pretty much summarize Minecraft, IMO
17:09
yeah.. and i still love it.
17:29
17:42
@Fosco: Well, I can imagine he might not really be in the position yet to want to have to worry about paying for relocation costs and futzing with labor laws, etc.
17:54
yeah that's a valid point
18:06
is there an official list of minecraft bugs anywhere?
That'd be an awesome question. ;)
Right.
Actually that came out wrong. What I meant to say was:
I have no idea, but that'd be an awesome question to ask on the site.
I think I remember seeing a page on minecraftwiki.net at some point in the past.
Thats fine, I understood the gist. No worries. The question has now been asked.
@Zoredache there is

Q: Canonical list of minecraft bugs

ZoredacheIs there a good official/semi-offical list of Minecraft bugs somewhere. I occasionally experience weird behaviors and I want to know if the bug is already known, and I should just accept it since I am playing something in alpha, or if it is a new bug and needs to be reported so it can be fixed/a...

@Zoredache enjoy
upvotes for all! hurrah
Thanks

Yeah, portals are dead to me until they work reliably as a transport system.
19:48
@javadocmd are portals really that bad? I've only used 2 or 3, but I've had no trouble with mine
I didn't find the reverse-portal-mismatch bug that bad, but I heard that some people ended up miles from home because of it
I've only tried a few, but I can't get a top-side and under-side portal to link directly for both directions.
And in an extreme case, I built a portal in the top world a long walk away from from my fort and when I went through the portal it took me to the same portal in the Nether as the portal in my fort.
At that point I gave up.
hmm
it is an interesting problem for Notch
does anyone know if the height of the Nether is 8 times the height of the "real" world, or does it only scale horizontally?
@sjohnston only horizontally.
pretty sure it's just horizontal.
@JavadocMD was the nether-side in a tunnel or something? it could be that's the only place in the area for a portal to safely spawn, so it sent you there.
20:01
@Brant I don't think that's the case, the Netherportal was in a fairly open area.
@sjohnston It really shouldn't be that hard to link portals... but it seems he didn't link them, and the portal selection takes place every time you go through..
Hmm. Well, notch said on twitter that the portal-placement code was buggy, but he didn't elaborate
And yes, it doesn't link them, but rather re-calculates where the opposite end should be each time you step through
And I would say buggy enough as to make portals useless for distance travel.
(Unless you luck into a working portal setup.)
I have yet to build one.. got the diamonds but haven't gone for obsidian yet.
@Fosco Well I'm here to spit on your dreams. ;)
Don't forget you can skip looking for diamonds if you want to invest in buckets to cast the lava in place.
20:09
yeah that feels like cheating, casting it in place..
The portal-placement quirk actually makes it pretty easy to farm obsidian. Just plunk a portal down, go into the nether, turn around and tear down the one that just appeared...
I wasn't looking to use them for travel, just to explore the nether and bring back new blocks.
@Brant which also annoys my OCD to no end. Portal, If I didn't put you there, I don't want you there. :)
20:23
Notch has also stated that he wants portals to link back up the same way even if you destroy and rebuild one. That, combined with the fact that they "search" for a safe landing spot makes it a little more complicated.
That does complicate the picture. Still, two top-side portals a mile away from each other shouldn't link to the same netherportal. :)
I'd keep an index mapping top-side portal coordinates to nether portal coordinates. Whenever a new portal is created, if the coordinates are in the index, you know exactly where the other side should map to. Otherwise it's a new portal, add to the index.
Then just dress it up with extra logic to handle the space-dilation.
