Mods, part of my "how can we help" is because I keep seeing waves of questions that you guys are fixing.
Can/should we be doing some of this?
00:28
@Adam Whenever you shrink an image, you over compress it. You should try not to do that because I feel like grainy, overly compressed images don't look good. Of course, that's just my opinion :P.
@Andy You absolutely can if you want to. So what we're doing right now is going through every post (just to cover what we missed as mods before we were instated) and checking tags and comments. If the post needs something else, we'll do it.
It's also a good way to see how tags are being used and edit excerpts accordingly.
@RubyJunk The images I've been finding in posts are excessively large and often have a ton of white space in them, so I crop and resize a bit.
@Adam I can understand cropping and resizing, the lossy compression is what's getting at me.
That's just stardard imgur stuff (which is also what SE uses natively).
Imgur automatically compresses small images excessively, but not the large ones? .-.
I'm not sure then. I did all that directly through imgur so there shouldn't be a problem.
00:34
How do you resize images through imgur? I didn't even know that was possible...
@Adam And also, I guess if you do that, it must add an excessively large amount of compression besides resizing it..
There's a whole editing feature to resize and crop (and maybe a few other things). Check the "edit" box when you upload an image.
That must be it. Whenever I suggest image edits, I download it into PDN and then resize it and crop it manually.
Then, obviously, I reupload it
Must be imgur's wonky algorithms then. :P
In any case, I resize images that clearly visually break the content they're used in. It's just a readability thing.
@Adam thanks. That's helpful
00:49
@Andy Sorry for not stating that earlier.

4 hours later…
05:17
@Adam @RubyJunk But you know about this here, yes?

Q: Resizing an image in a post?

warrenIs it possible to resize an image in an answer? For example, How important is PhD research topic to getting a job? has an answer that should have the image in the answer, but it's too big. Is there a way to handle resizing?

@halirutan I had no idea that was a feature. I'll definitely use that in the future.
@Adam I stumbled over it, because beside our own SE Image Uploader that let's you upload things directly from Mathematica, I implemented a hack that let's you encode source code into an imgur image for easier sharing of large code cells.

hi
@Ha
@RudraMatroja Hi.
Thanks for joining.
@RudraMatroja My core system with the new CPU will currently be:
so you're looking for a good mobo that support s64gig ram and the 5960x?
@RudraMatroja Yes
And if possible ATX form.
Because I want to have the Be Quiet Rack which only supports ATX
07:24
al right i'm checking out parts with good reputation
@halirutan heh. I traditionally pull people over to chat for hardware stuff ;p
and how do you do that?
@JourneymanGeek It's just easier and faster. And if something of general interest comes up, I'm not too lazy to ask a question afterwards and give @RudraMatroja some reputation.
yup!
@RudraMatroja: I'm a SU mod and I'm always on chat so... I just suggest people pop on there
well here's a mobo that could interest you. it's pretty darn cheap for the chipset
ASRock X99 Extreme4
07:28
@halirutan: Even if you arn't american, the pc parts picker is a good way to get a system together
Also, ATX or smaller
@JourneymanGeek you're stealing my answers lol
You could go mini atx for example, if you didn't need as many ram slots and/or PCI slots
@RudraMatroja: meh, you post the answers then ;p
I just enjoy designing systems
but that's like window licking
@JourneymanGeek @RudraMatroja I'm planning to put 8 modules of RAM in it. If I'm not mistaken it's better for parallel bandwidth.
07:30
designing awesome stuff then looking at the price
I'm at the stage where I can actually just upgrade every few years
._.
There's desktops that have 8 ram slots?
@RudraMatroja: With my current build, I designed one, saved over a year, did a few small tweaks, ended up getting something better
yeah the 5960x takes upto 4 in parallel (if you want all 8 you might need to go xeon)
Most of its ok tho. I just need a new second screen in a few months ;p
That.
@JourneymanGeek This one seems to have
ASUS X99-A/U3.1
i still use crappy 720p screen for the secondary monitor
07:31
@RudraMatroja: primary screen is 4K
looking at one of those odd korean displays to replace the 1080p I stole from the main desktop, since the 1600x800 screen I used to have died.
holy moly you lucky *******
lol
Actually the monitor and video card ate up my discretionary spending for most of the year
THEN I lost my job ;p
@halirutan https://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-x99extreme4
this one has 8slots and cheap
@RudraMatroja About the RAM speed. Does it have to be higher than CPU or not? I asked this @JourneymanGeek already.
@halirutan: two are unrelated
for most things quantity > quality
Just get supported ram, in 'kits' of the same number of sticks as channels
07:34
just check what ram speed are supported by the cpu but frankly at high end cpu you don't need to worry
in the like the ram frequencies are shown for the ddr4 type
@RudraMatroja The intel only support 2133 DDR4. That's the most
Actually oddly it matters more on a low end AMD box
On high end, not much difference
that's the highest
I'd actually rather get the baseline 'standard' ram they recommend if you arn't OCing, and max out.
07:36
That's why I I decided to use CL15 rather than 3000GHz and CL18 or so..
high end ram makes little differrence
("rather" . That said I chose to go with 16gb in 2 sticks)
@RudraMatroja: I disagree there
it costs way too much for the performance gain
@RudraMatroja You mainboard is indeed cheaper but has only 1x PCIe and 2x USB 3.0
yeah but you're into sli crossfire are you?
usb could be itchy
as it's getting common
heh. Or just get a 980TI ;)
@RudraMatroja The rest looks pretty similar to the ASUS. I said this earlier, here in Germany we have to burn money to get something back from taxes.
Its essentially the same performance as a Titan at ~2/3 the cost
AND supposedly DX12 lets you use dissimilar cards anyway
even amd/nvidia combos
it has 3 pci ex ports
07:39
I'm pondering that
since AMD has better DX 12 performance
If not...
erm
and they burn waay too much
I'm more worried about drivers
Nvidia's been rock solid for me
@JourneymanGeek @RudraMatroja Has someone a recommendation for a CPU cooler that actually fits above the RAM. I have read horrible stories of coolers that came in contact with RAM or with the rack itself because they were too large.
07:40
@halirutan did you see premade builds on the pc part picker?
@halirutan: erf. This is why I buy regular ram ;p
But I use the stock cooler.
(for now)
@halirutan: would your case do a closed loop water cooler?
@JourneymanGeek I usually too, but this time I want silent pc.
amd has been rock solid too... just in the bottom of the ocean
@JourneymanGeek Nope, no water.
alas
those would solve a few issues at once
since the radiator is far away from the processor, and those are quiet if you pick the right ones.
07:42
@RudraMatroja No, but I'm looking at the Build Guides now.
@halirutan: the logical increments guides are good too
I typically start with those then swap out parts
@JourneymanGeek Where is this menu entry?
@JourneymanGeek Ah, different site. Thanks
logical increments guides to get you started. PC parts picker to get the build planned ;p
07:44
too bad pc parts is not in every country
@JourneymanGeek So 5960x and I'm categorized as monstrous
@RudraMatroja: I typically buy parts locally
so I end up taking a weekend, walkabout to check prices anyway
Our local computer parts mall is quite interesting, once you realise where the seedy parts are.
where do you loive?
Singapore
i'm from france and I rarely go to the market to bargain prices
07:46
@JourneymanGeek @RudraMatroja I buy locally too. My friend from school and neighbor has a computer shop. Awesome :-)
Sim Lim Square is a glorious hive of scum and villany.
Even if, sadly, they've gotten rid of some of the local colour
Do NOT ever buy a phone there.
@halirutan 386 is affordable for your mobo?
and don't forget you need a cpu cooler
caus the cpu doesn't come with one
@RudraMatroja Yes, and I have no idea which one will fit over the RAM and inside my rack.
Currently,
be quiet! Dark Rock 3, CPU-Cooler
@halirutan: its pretty hard to guess without knowing the exact size of the cooler/case.
look at the mobo and you'll see the space you've available
07:49
You MIGHT be able to look these up
@JourneymanGeek I guess I speak to my friend and let him order one or two alternatives.
what was your case already?
Or he'll knows it from experience
That's useful yes
07:51
the model name please
@RudraMatroja Silent Base 800 from Be Quiet
and the video card?
and how many hard drives?
(model names if you can)
@RudraMatroja MSI NVidia GTX 970
2x 850 Pro 2,5" 1 TB, Solid State Drive
1x Seagate ST2000DX001 2 TB, Hybrid-Festplatte
man i have the same ssds but in 500gig formats
Yfancy.
I have the same SSD in 256gb
@halirutan: heh, I'd go a step up and get a 980 or a 980ti
looking at the whole build
07:54
@RudraMatroja Sorry, it's only 1 of the Samsung.
lol
I thought you were going to raid it ;p
1tb is ssd is more than enough
@JourneymanGeek Nope, too expensive and I already have the GTX 970.
07:55
Bought it 3 weeks ago
then its fine
4gig i guess
well 3.5 to be exact
was quite a scandal
there you go
just put in the rest of the info
PSU and stuff
I nearly bought one ;p
Went 2 steps up tho
07:59
change the mobo if you'd like a better one
yeah well you're good for 5y
lol. or more
@RudraMatroja Thanks
980ti is like 580ti when it came out
it's still running good
lol yeah
my 660 was awesome too
i'm actually waiting for a money income to get a better card, i've a gtx760 and it's having trouble
08:01
new owner had a 760, was waiting on rma
he's gettin a 960 as a replacement amd selling that ;p
i'd have kept the 760 for physix card
till direct x 12 comes out
lol
was thinking of doing that with the 660
but never got round to it
well they say the performances go up with dx12 sharply in sli
lol. lets see how the next job pays
pretty crazy
well i'm off to lunch
see you in a few
08:07
@RudraMatroja Thank you for all answers!
08:17
aaaaand i'm back
no problem. I hope you found the build you wanted

What does everyone think about having a close reason for technical support questions? Have we had enough of them to justify it? Would it be useful?

1 hour later…
10:36
@ArtOfCode: Wouldn't the generic close reason do there?
@JourneymanGeek We don't have a generic reason. If we did, yes, but...
Really?
OOh, you don't
I suppose question belongs to another site works, but its nice to have a good reason to close anything shitty ;p
@JourneymanGeek Currently, you just have to add a custom comment. We've had a number, though, so might be worth a custom reason.
That's inefficient ;p
11:20
@halirutan OMG, I didn't know about that. Interesting!
@RubyJunk SE Meta is full of such stuff. Always carefully hidden in the thousands of posts.
@halirutan Haha :)

Q: Can we get a way to wrap text around images?

Joel SpolskyRight now as far as I can tell all images have to appear as inline paragraphs, left-aligned with other paragraphs. For sites like Stack Overflow, it makes sense... images are only used when you want to illustrate something, so the image is sort of like something that they have to stop and "read"...

And the answer does too.
12:03
@RubyJunk Status was already declined by Jeff himself.

14:25
@ArtOfCode, I think we need the technical support close reason
14:37
@Andy I guessed you would, being the poster of that meta question. Reasonings?
14:54
The questions posted in the OP are all tech support. There have been a few others since then too. It's becoming common enough that I think it's warranted
Tempted to agree
Are you on the fence because we're still young and want to see if the trend continues? Or for another reason?
More because I just woke up and don't trust myself yet ;)
Caffeine. :)
15:13
@ArtOfCode I am with Andy, I think we need it.
So two mods, at least two users want it. So promising.
Post-drowsiness me says that we probably should have it

JTL
16:02
@ArtOfCode I agree on that one as well. We could wait, but I imagine that, as traffic increases, those questions are likely to increase as well. I envision random web-browsing folk happen upon the site and think "Oh! I need someone to 'recommend' a fix for my mouse, which is a piece of hardware, so this must be the right place."
Also, no one posted a "no" answer.
16:23
Hm. Nice one then. I'm tempted to call that a pretty clear decision - @Undo, shall we?
Suppose so
On it
Is it done yet?
Now?
How about now?
Now.
Now we just need @Undo to approve it, and it goes live.
Yay!
16:28
Just a sec
@Undo there's a clicky-link for you in t'other room
Done
Reason is live!
And I just claimed its first use :)

Q: "I've already bought this product, I want to do this, can I? If not what should I get instead?" questions

AndyWe've had a few questions that follow this format: I've bought this PRODUCT to solve MY PROBLEM. Can this PRODUCT actually do this? If so, how? If not, what do you recommend? The most recent example is What will be the best way to connect two external monitors with macbook pro early 2010 mo...
