@jesse_b It sounds like your friend should avoid the investing game. But you're a good friend to try to help him. Maybe you should try the shaking and screaming thing too.
If you ignore things like valuations, equities just become another way to lose money. Like a casino, but less fun.
It's tricky even if you know what you are doing.
@jesse_b I read news reports about this. It was a big news item for a bit. As I understand it, some big financial firms lost quite a lot of money because they were shorting the stock, and the stock price didn't drop as they expected. Historically this is an unusual phenomenon.

@jesse_b I recently came across a mention of Walter Schloss in my news feed. I investigated a bit further, and I really liked his thinking. He's also mentioned in www8.gsb.columbia.edu/articles/columbia-business/superinvestors, which you may be familiar with.
There is at least one long interview of him on Youtube, but not a lot else.
Of course, stocks that meet his criteria aren't necessarily available, at least in the quantity/variety needed for a portfolio.

@FaheemMitha Hello, How are you? I was busy so could not reply.

11:55 AM
@PrabhjotSingh I'm doing OK. How are you doing? Busy at work?

I'm free today.
@FaheemMitha I'm good.

@PrabhjotSingh You're not working today? Long weekend?

@FaheemMitha I'm on night duty these days.

@PrabhjotSingh OK.

What did I say in 2018?

12:09 PM
@PrabhjotSingh You were trying to help with my mother's situation. It was in November/December 2018, when my mother was dying in hospital.

@FaheemMitha Yes. But I could not help. I remember I read Bombay Drugs and cosmestic Act then. I talked to my brother's friend about hospital loot. She said she would help me about this. But till this day she didn't reply.

@PrabhjotSingh hospital loot? What does that mean?

@FaheemMitha If I recall correctly they were selling medicines at higher price.
Due to pandemic 2020 was a very long year. It is possible that I forgot many things in 2017-18.

@PrabhjotSingh Oh. Yes, they were. I forgot about that part for a moment.

12:27 PM
BTW what is current situation in trust case?

@PrabhjotSingh My family Trust? Did we talk about that?
I'm not sure what you mean by "trust case".

@FaheemMitha s/trust case/trust issue/
@FaheemMitha Yes. Family Trust.

@PrabhjotSingh Well, my cousin, who is/was also the Trust Chairman, was arrested in October 2019. As far as I know, he is still in jail. I can't remember if I told you about that. I also can't remember how much we talked, or how much I told you.

Do I have special powers? (response to Did we talk about that?)

@PrabhjotSingh I'm not sure what you mean, sorry.
I see you've answered some questions on U&L. That's good.

12:36 PM
@FaheemMitha You told me about this. If I recall you said they cheated and sold stuff. stuff means land.

@PrabhjotSingh Yes, there was lots of fraud. I still don't know most of the details.

@FaheemMitha Yes. I try to write awk one liners. I'm learning new things in awk from Ed Morton and αғsнιη.

@PrabhjotSingh That wouldn't be at the top of my list of things to learn, but whatever works for you.

@FaheemMitha What is on your list? Lua? Python? Common Lisp?

1:02 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Mostly I just learn things that I need to learn to get stuff done. It's not very glamorous or exciting.

1:37 PM
awk and sed are both very useful for getting stuff done, IME

2:16 PM
Ah, I’ve just got my 250k swag email!

@StephenKitt congratulations! You'd think with the buyout they could afford better swag than just an email! ;)

@JeffSchaller LOL

"stuff we all get"!

@StephenKitt whohooo! Nice!
Sadly, network-wide rep doesn't count
:(
...

@terdon you’re close to a swag event on AU ;-)

2:29 PM
Kusalananda is only a couple or Answers away, too

@StephenKitt Eh, I'm at ~88k. Some work still. And I got my 100k swag from U&L, I'm not sure I want more to be honest. I'm cautiously optimistic that SE is actually trying to improve, but not quite ready to give them free advertising yet.

@terdon yeah I don’t go out much so I don’t give much actual advertising anyway ;-)

"forward this email to 10 friends and get a free prize!"

@JeffSchaller and remember to remove the first name in the list, and add yourself at the end!
that’s a feature of old Internet that I don’t miss

@StephenKitt wow! where'd that nostalgia tsunami come from?!

2:39 PM
@JeffSchaller early onset Alzheimer’s presumably, I’ll slowly forget the last twenty years and start living in the late 90s again

@StephenKitt True dat, neither do I. I doubt anyone would consider my chest as prime advertising real estate! :)
@StephenKitt It was fun the first 873 times...

@terdon is there on-demand Alzheimer's, so I can forget this image? :)

@JeffSchaller he didn’t say “hairy chest” at least

do women really say “dude” to other women?
(my son and I have a similar tan problem, in a cyclist variant — our arms and parts of our legs are tanned, with nice straight demarcation lines where our shorts and sleeves stop and our socks and gloves start)

2:47 PM
it'd have to be followed with an exclamation of some kind + ", you guys!"
"dude, look at her tan lines, you guys!"
@StephenKitt I'm in the same boat; I grew up knowing it as a "farmer's tan" -- a tan in the shape of a t-shirt

@JeffSchaller yup, known here as an agricultural tan

@StephenKitt seriously? that's a mouthful of syllables; borders on being longer than the thing it's describing

somehow I was always more taken by the Crickhollow “Fear! Fire! Foes! Awake!” alert than the fires of Gondor
@JeffSchaller it’s easier to say in French, "bronzage agricole"

@StephenKitt of course it sounds better in French :)

or rather, it’s easier in French to say that than "bronzage de fermier" (or "bronzage paysan" which could be interpreted as derogatory)

2:55 PM
It's interesting to think that being pale was once a sign of being well-off (you didn't have to work in the fields) to a tan being seen as desirable, to skin cancer

and moles being the mark of the devil

well, thank goodness we've solved typesetting!

@StephenKitt They certainly do in my experience, yes.

@terdon TIL, thanks!

3:10 PM
It's a contentious subject. Kinda like whether guys can be gender neutral, but I've heard both terms used by women for women often enough. In fact, the only two people I refer to as "dude" these days are women, but I'm not one so that isn't really a strong argument.

@terdon s/ strong/n / :)

@terdon yeah my next question was going to be “do men call women dudes, or is it only acceptable for women to call women dudes?”
(and yes, the two propositions aren’t opposed, since people do stuff which isn’t acceptable)

It's been about 20 months since I've been in a building with more than one adult woman, so I can't say for sure.

I haven’t been to the UK for a while
or the US for that matter

I would call a close woman friend "dude", but I can't put my finger on the exact requirements.
I think 90% of it would be an expression of surprise.
or an exhortation: "Dude, really?!"

I've been watching Parks and Recreation these days and I've seen it used by one woman towards another there.

There are some terms used in the military to address a general group of people in which women are sometimes lumped into that really make no sense and would probably be pretty offensive trollface.jpg

But yeah, I would only use it as an interjection, I think. Something like "Dude! Can you believe this?" is gender neutral in my mind while "That dude over there" is not.

@terdon ah I’ve just started that, I’ll keep my ears open
I’ve heard “dudette” in the past

@jesse_b you know, naming your pictures with spaces in the filename is just asking for trouble ;)

3:21 PM
@StephenKitt the latest trend is for things like this to be considered offensive though
For example a lot of women prefer to be called actors rather than actresses

I’ll remember that next time one of my daughters acts up ;-)

@JeffSchaller I'll replace all the spaces with newlines

@StephenKitt calling her an acteur might be confusing, though
@jesse_b naw, newlines are passe'; the cool kids use vertical tabs, now

3:25 PM
happening now on /dev/chat: creating a fully-functional but utterly unusable POSIX system

"Oh, we're certified alright!"

certifiable at least

There ya go :)

I have a colleague who ends calls with “stay sane” — but that only works for people who are sane to start with
or at least who are still sane at the end of the call

3:27 PM
ever the optimist!

maybe they should start the call with that

“Agenda: stay sane”

Life goal: stay sane

crazy people are more fun

Great news! We've put a bunch of them together into one building. Don't misplace your hall pass when visiting, though :)

3:31 PM
@StephenKitt You seem to be making some assumptions there.

@terdon yes, I’ll rephrase that as “Agenda: maintain current level of sanity”

Better. Realistic, at least ;)

4:36 PM
@ToxicFrog I'm sure they are. I didn't mean to imply they weren't.
@StephenKitt That's the Horn-cry of Buckland. Or the Horn-call of Buckland.
@PrabhjotSingh Well, Cipla reported good results, which was a relief.
