Most impressive one-answer account I've ever seen:

A: List only regular files (but not directories) in current directory

Athul Bijuls -p | grep -v / This command lists everything that isn't a directory (files, links, device files, etc.).

I have an Android question for my fellow U&L people here.
Should I even bother trying to debug the painful end user process when things go wrong?
Or should I just root the darn thing, get direct access to the filesystem, and be done with it?
(Here's my specific question, though- )

Q: Android File Transfer not working between El Capitan and Android 6

WildcardI have a Nexus 7 and a MacBook Pro running El Capitan (10.11.6). I just installed Android File Transfer (1.0.11) and connected my Nexus. Result: Android File Transfer automatically opens, but says: Can't access device storage. Make sure your device is unlocked and "File Transfer" or "M...

(Now I'm reading up on rooting - android.stackexchange.com/q/1184/190389)

@Wildcard I'm using Dropbox and Google drive to transfer the occasional file from my Android phone. For bulk transfers, I use Syncthing.

@Wildcard @Kusalananda: airdroid is nice for that stuff too but it works over wifi not usb

@Kusalananda: Someone just commented on one of my answers saying it reminded them of an answer from you. I take it as a great compliment and you should take it as an extreme insult :-P

Q: Command to remove blank lines in dump file

mintowhich command is more suitable to remove blank lines in hex dump file, to bond parts together? sed -i '/^$/d' file.log sed -i '/^\s*$/d' file.log or maybe awk? 801c3fb0: 0000 2821 0c18 9741 2406 0020 afb0 0010 | ..(!...A$.. .... 801c3fc0: 2402 0014 afa2 0038 8e22 00e4 2404 0064 | $....

@Jesse_b That's a terrifyingly thorough answer.
@FaheemMitha Hah. I got interested in trying to find different and uniq ways to do it. I'm still looking
Interestingly enough uniq can actually be sort of used to remove blank lines
but not in this case

@Jesse_b make me smile
Is it correct that SED doesn't have the concept of "field" and "field separator"?
@Tim I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.
@Tim That is correct. sed does not deal with fields. If anything, it only cares about lines.

@Kusalananda Thanks.
@Tim This is due to its heritage from ed, a line editor.

@Jesse_b Pardon my ignorance. I searched for its meaning and found proz.com/translation-contests/source_notes/190/1 It is oxymoron, and I guess you must intend to mean something.

@Jesse_b :-)
@Tim It was a joke, you had asked me to make you smile :-p

I should have written "made me smile". It is that the flattering comment
+1 for the thorough answer. Although i am not able to give an up-vote. Your answer is in the style of the Zen master of comments, Kushalananda. — Rakesh Sharma 1 hour ago
It is. I replied with
>Thanks, but if it were really an answer from Kusalananda it would surely contain an ed solution.

I feel I may need to learn how to make flattery like that.

Hi @Kusalananda. I hope you're having a good weekend.
19:35
@FaheemMitha I think he's still on his four score vacation, probably bored half to death
@Jesse_b four score vacation?
@FaheemMitha He was/is on that very long extended vacation. Score is an old english word meaning twenty (famously used by Lincoln in the gettysburg address "four score and 7 years ago")
20:04
@Jesse_b Yes, I know what score means. I was just puzzled by your reference to a "four score vacation".
20:35
@FaheemMitha Hi there! I hope you're doing okay! My head hasn't been working today, so I've been somewhat inactive here.
@Kusalananda Hey.
You're still on vacation, right?
@Jesse_b Yes, still on vacation. One more week to go, and then we'll see if I can remember what my work is supposed to be.
@FaheemMitha Yep.
@Kusalananda Well, I hope you are having a good time on vacation. Where are you?
@FaheemMitha At home. Didn't go anywhere. Caring for the girl and all that.
@Kusalananda Oh. Shame. A change of scenery would be good.
20:37
@FaheemMitha Yes, it would. In due time.
You could come to Bombay. Scenery changes don't get more drastic than that.
How do you feel about Third World Urban Hell Holes?
:-) So I've heard from friends that have been there.
Are they your cup of tea? Or, to put it in modern parlance, do you dig?
@FaheemMitha Is Bombay the hell hole you're referirng to?
Apparently Buffy is getting a reboot, or so says the rumor mill. Is nothing sacred?
@Kusalananda Well, one of them. Hell Holes, plural. But yes, Bombay is a prime example.
I mean, if they gave out prizes for Third World Urban Hell Holes, I'm sure Bombay would be a shoo-in for at least a silver medal.
I mean, it's got it all.
20:40
I have a few favourite places around the world that I'd like to see again. I haven't been to India at all, so I should try to get there at some point.
@Kusalananda So what's your favorite?
@FaheemMitha I need to prepare for the night, give tha cats some food and sort stuff out before going to bed. Take care!
@FaheemMitha No single one.
@Kusalananda You too.

Does anyone have some insight into the /history vs /command-history tags?
/history says not to use it for questions about the shell but command-history seems to be about actually finding the history of commands you have typed
I'm looking for a tag that works for historical shell questions
