@FumbleFingers hmm, not sure if that means the driver is not installed or that it cannot do 3D acceleration.
i don't even want 3d accelaration! just a bit higher resolution
I guessed as much. You should have installed an ATI control panel thingie with one of the commands you ran before. I'm trying to find out what it's called to see if that can let you change your resolution. In the mean time, please post the output of
ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf
steve@steve-System-Product-Name:/$ ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Ah, good that means we've done something.
OK, does this do anything useful:
amdxdg-su -c amdcccle
23:05
it said there was a problem "no amd driver, or not functioning" etc etc
Ah
Damn, I'm sure this is much simpler than I'm making it seem I'm afraid.
i've been on the other side of that countless times
There is some minor issue blocking things I think.
It basically sounds like there is another driver loaded and that is fouling things up. OK, one last test, could you open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and post the "Device" section here?
You should be able to open it with
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Module"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
Driver "fglrx"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
Device "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
Hmm, well that looks like it's configured to use the proprietary driver. And what does this return:
lsmod | grep fglrx
23:10
#### the terminsal window came back with #####
steve@steve-System-Product-Name:/$ ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
steve@steve-System-Product-Name:/$ amdxdg-su -c amdcccle
steve@steve-System-Product-Name:/$ sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

(gedit:2740): GLib-GIO-WARNING **: Missing callback called fullpath = /root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
@FumbleFingers ignore that, not a problem
Not relevant anyway
ther termwnd seems stuck will close it and open another...
@FumbleFingers it is stuck because it is running the graphical editor (gedit)
the lsmod | grep fglrx command didnt do anything in new termwnd
OK, good
That means that the driver is not loaded for some reason
23:13
that's good? lol!
Well, it's better for it not to be loaded than to be loaded and not work :)
Does this return anything?
lsmod | grep radeon
no. dont i need to be in some folder?
@FumbleFingers nope
No, these just list the loaded modules (equivalent of windows .dll files)
@terdon o/
23:15
OK, @FumbleFingers try running this:
sudo modprobe fglrx
Then logging out and logging back in again.
steve@steve-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo modprobe fglrx
[sudo] password for steve:
FATAL: Module fglrx not found.
AH! OK, so it did not work the first time
OK, not sure why but probably because of the whole chroot thing. @FumbleFingers since you now have a working GUI, I suggest you try to follow that guide again (including the bit that removes any existing installed files) and see if that works better if done correctly.
Remember not to double click the .run files (reasonable though that may appear) but instead to run:
sudo sh *.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/precise
in the Downloads directory
is there any easy way to capture this entire chat log?
I've heard rumors of decent Intel video cards. Should check them out some time.
@FumbleFingers Yes, there should be a permalink, hang on
23:22
@terdon (from XP) s'ok i can do it easy here with ctrl/a ctrl/c then paste into notepad.
right! well thanks for all. i think i will put another drive in and do a paragon backup tomorrow before soldiering on. Oh - and if you're up for it, let's get married asap. I could do with the support!
@FumbleFingers sorry I couldn't be more help. Dammit, this thing should work if you follow the steps described. I hope it does, I'm always pleased to see new users coming to Linux. You might want to consider Linux Mint instead of UBuntu, this kind of thing should be easier there.
@terdon I'd be interested to hear how you got these.
@FumbleFingers I'm going to at least need some flowers before we go that far, I'm not that kind of geek :)
23:24
@terdon Or even Debian. :-)
seriously, i really am grateful, even if i still have a problem. I shall return tomorrow, no doubt.
@FumbleFingers feel free to, and you're very welcome :)
byzee bye!!!!!!
good luck!
@FaheemMitha by clicking on the arrow on the left of the first message and getting the permalink
Or use hardware that has supported free drivers. Anyone knows what Intel video cards are like these days?
@terdon That gives everything after that?
23:26
It is expressed as blahblah/STARTMSGID#ENDMSGID
I then got the permalink for the last chat message which gave me its ID and played with the ranges
@terdon Ok.
@terdon I see. Makes sense.
Ok, back to sleep. Hopefully. Take care, guys.
See ya
@terdon and then I am the one that knows all the little perks of chat.SE?
@Braiam yes, I was thinking I'd just had a @Braiam moment :)
