I had a dog do that to me once. She had been hit by a car and was limping so we were all over her, showering her with attention, the poor mutt.

And then one day, when she thought I wasn't looking, I see her running full tilt! I shouted her name, she turned and looked at me, with what I swear was a chagrined expression, and promptly started limping theatrically again.

Probably 1 because it's harder to fake 2. In case of 1 it might be a UTI.

@terdon I know a dog like that too. He's a mini dachshund who got a herniated spinal disk (typical for the breed). Main symptom is hind legs going gradually more limp. Got surgery and everything, which fixed him up nicely. But when months later his owner would tell people the story of his illness he'd start limping again.

@AndrasDeak he has had diarrhea, we took him to the vet and they suspected giardia and gave him some antibiotics. He got better shortly after the vet appointment and was better for a few days and then got sick again

I suspect it may be some treats that we got shortly before he got sick
