I'm attempting to use ssh-copy-id to set up public key authentication for my user account on two school servers. I was able to set it up on Server1, but when I do ssh-copy-id user@Server2, and enter my password I get back sh: test: argument expected. I do not understand why this is. Server2 has a default shell of csh. I'm not sure how I can change this, nor if it is affecting my ability to set up public key authentication.
If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know. I googled a bit, and links that show up are for either using ssh-copy-id or for using the test utility.
I can successfully ssh into my account on Server2
I took a guess and added bash as the last line of the .cshrc file, and now I have a little more info. I now get: bash: line 1: ssh-rsa: command not found<linebreak>sh: test: argument expected.
This kind of looks like the IT&E people that manage the Server2 cluster might have a really old package version, so something isn't working?

@StephenKitt Thanks Stephen. If you mean verify, update and erase, i interpreted them as the ability to verify unused packaged, update the removal of these and erase them. However based your feedback, it suggests that rpm is limited to the management of a single package.
Hi all, what's the difference between tee > output.log and tee output.log?

6:34 AM
@derobert - Would you know if a command that is the midst of running can be stopped?

@Motivated I didn’t say “verbs”, I said “words”; from the quote: “individual software packages”.
@Motivated they’re unnecessary now that yum and dnf can do the same thing; however you can still use them.

@StephenKitt Ah. That makes sense.
@StephenKitt When you say "they" what are you referring to?

@Motivated follow the link (the arrow on the left):

@StephenKitt Thanks Stephen. Does that mean that packages such as rpmorphan are superfluous?

@StephenKitt Thanks Stephen. I wasn't aware i could do that. It's a hidden feature :-)
@StephenKitt - A question on stopping processes. If i run the command find and if it takes longer than anticipated, is it okay to stop the process via CTRL-C for example? Can it result in a corrupt filesystem?

8:55 AM
Hi guys, a question for native english speakers: how do you (in everyday use) pronounce "awk" (as in awkward, or spell it as 3 distinct letters, or something else)

Q: What happens when I kill 'cp'? Is it safe and does it have any consequences?

SeninhaWhat are the consequences for a ext4 filesystem when I terminate a copying cp command by typing Ctrl + C while it is running? Does the filesystem get corrupted? Is the partition's space occupied by the incomplete copied file still usable after deleting it? And, most importantly, is terminating ...

@DusanBajic as in “awkward”.

Thanks!

Very colourless over here ATM: instagram.com/p/BtAwreIlQph/…

@Kusalananda Gorgeous though!

@terdon It really is. The temperature went down from -1 to -15 over night, so that's what made the trees go all white. There's also a frosty fog.

Q: Sliding glass windows in an open space: plain or treated glass?

Faheem MithaThe plan is to place sliding glass windows on one side of a bridge connecting two buildings near the Arabian Sea in Mumbai. I attach three photos of the bridge area. One shows both sides of the bridge, one is east facing, and one is west facing towards the Arabian Sea. The windows are going to ...

@StephenKitt Thanks Stephen. That was a great answer. I wonder why it doesn't appear when i searched online i.e. Google.

I have a doubt here.... whilst the question was not exactly stellar and a potential duplicate, should it have been deleted? unix.stackexchange.com/questions/496455/tracing-serial-port-io What do you think?

5:23 PM
@RuiFRibeiro the OP deleted it, not a moderator or reviewer, so ... there's nothing to prevent them from deleting it. I suppose you could vote to undelete it and then VTC as a duplicate, for what it's worth.

@JeffSchaller OK, thanks for the input.

@Motivated Sure. You can normally control-C them on a terminal, or control-\, or use kill (with SIGINT, SIGTERM, or even SIGKILL). Or pull the plug on the computer. Whether any of these things are a good idea, well, depends on the command. You really shouldn't direct questions like that to one person — and really questions are supposed to go on the site (which would also allow you to put in enough detail to get a much more useful response).
@Ungeheuer questions really are supposed to go on the site. BTW, ssh-copy-id is actually a fairly simple thing to do by hand if the script doesn't work.
Last bits of snow are on their way out

5:47 PM
@derobert An no more expected? We've just had a foggy night turning everything white.

@Kusalananda saw your picture, nice! I don't think there is any more in our forecast.

@derobert I wasn't sure if it would really be appropriate for the site. I always err on the side of trying a question out here and seeing what the response is regarding whether or not it is more appropriate for the site. I'll try to do it manually when I get off work.

Well, at least he's honest. Still flagging it as "not an answer" though... unix.stackexchange.com/a/496556/116858

10:11 PM
@Ungeheuer as long as they're Unix/Linux servers, it's appropriate for the site.

10:54 PM
@derobert I wouldn't mind a bit of snow and ice for variety. But hell rarely freezes over.
I suppose Spring is still some way off.

@Kusalananda lol'd at that. Why would they be compelled to even post that?

@Kusalananda Just added a third delete vote.

@FaheemMitha Yeah, it was deleted.

@Kusalananda That would have been really pointless, even as a comment.

@FaheemMitha It wasn't completely pointless, made me smile

10:59 PM
@Jesse_b Might have been a variant of "I have this problem too" or just someone in over their heads in stuff they didn't know how to start to sort out.
I'm going to stop typing now. I've got achey hands and arms...
The bed calls, too. See you some other time.

@Kusalananda Good luck! Old fashion ice packs work wonders on sore joints
Goodnight

@Jesse_b Thanks for the tip.

@Kusalananda You should watch out for RSI. Remember to stretch and take breaks. Using Dvorak or similar might help too - dunno.
Also, yoga is good. But I've said so before.

@FaheemMitha I mostly have problems with my mouse hand rather than my keyboard hand

@Jesse_b Well, problems are problems. Try using your mouse less?

11:05 PM
Using a mouse too small for my hand was a huge problem
Stretching also helps a lot

Also, remember to stretch and take breaks.
I spread out my typing across the day.
It seems to weird some people out.
I regularly get comments asking me when I sleep. I suppose that's a fair question, though.

Anyone who's familiar with FreeBSD should check >this question<. It was too long since I installed a FreebSD system so I can't tell whether they're seeing the regular boot menu, or the installation boot menu.
Now I'm going to bed, promise.

@Kusalananda Have a good night.
I asked here earlier about NAS, but nobody replied. Anyone?

Thanks, same to you, in your own time.

@FaheemMitha The rapper?

11:21 PM
@Jesse_b No, Network Attached Storage.

@FaheemMitha network attached storage can barely perform gangster rap, if at all

Currently my backup consists of an external USB drive sitting on the floor, plugged into a USB port. It's a lot better than nothing, but much less than perfect. It regularly errors out.
@Jesse_b Not helpful.
The NAS units here are overpriced. They might all be imports.

Yeah I think it's usually cheaper to buy an old tower PC and a SATA card
install freenas or os of your choice
I did get a really good deal on a 4 bay NAS several years ago though

@Jesse_b Yes, I thought of that. But would take up a small amount of space on the floor? I don't have a lot of room here.

@FaheemMitha Not much more space than the average NAS device

11:25 PM
And why do people buy NAS units at all, if a tower PC is cheaper?

@FaheemMitha I mean that could be said about many things

And I must say, the price these things sell at, cheap isn't the word that comes immediately to mind.
@Jesse_b For example?
Seriously, there must be some reason.

@FaheemMitha Why would anyone buy a chevy when hyundai is cheaper
I think the nas being an appliance is just "easier"

@Jesse_b In what sense?

but in reality it's basically just a computer configured to be an appliance

11:28 PM
What's the difference between an appliance and a computer?

Well tower PCs often don't have enough hard drive slots

@Jesse_b Two would work for me...
And the NAS ones being sold here often have only 1 or 2, anyway.

@FaheemMitha In my opinion an appliance is just a purpose built computer
Probably with a slightly modified operating system

@Jesse_b And the purpose is?
Backup, you mean?
If so, how would one modify a computer specially for backup?

Depends. I've seen firewall appliances that are basically just servers with a modified RHEL setup to filter network traffic
NAS devices are just modified computers (or servers) with some form of linux designed to share out storage

11:31 PM
@Jesse_b That sounds like pretty lame modifications. What does "share out storage" mean?

Last I read though freenas requires 8GB of memory which is kind of lame
I think a NAS should be able to function just fine with 2GB or less

@Jesse_b Yes, that'a lot. Actually some of the NAS's I've seen have as little as 256 MB, which is just ridiculous.

@FaheemMitha Honestly I don't know anymore. I haven't dealt with network storage in a while but when I last did the NAS solutions dell was providing seemed an awful lot like SAN

@Jesse_b I'm just looking for something a step up from a USB drive on the floor. Some level of redundancy would be nice, too. Like RAID.
Obviously, that requires a bit more of a setup.

they were able to serve up block storage, connect via iSCIS and/or fibre channel

11:34 PM
@Jesse_b Can't a regular computer do that?

Probably, it definitely could meet your needs
I would get an old tower pc, throw a 4 port SATA expansion card on it (get a hardware raid card if you can find one cheap). Throw 3-4 disks in it in RAID 5 and just share out the space via SAMBA and call it a day

@Jesse_b This question corresponds more to something like - why use a car when a golf cart will do. Though that's also a poor analogy.

I obviously am not familiar with India but I know in the US you can go on ebay and get a machine retired from some business for $50-100 easily
@FaheemMitha Well both chevy and hyundai make real cars
But yeah that analogy is also good
if you only need to travel short distances on private property and a golf cart will suffice, why would you buy a full sized car

@Jesse_b Unfortunately this isn't the US. For example, I really like Lian-Li cases. In the US it is trivial to buy them. Here it's basically impossible. Even though we're closer to the manufacturer than the US is.
@Jesse_b I might just assemble a low-spec computer from scratch. Might be easier than buying a second hand thing here.

11:53 PM
Apparently Newegg has an Indian branch. That's oddly reassuring.
