@FaheemMitha Even worse, Firefox doesn't just have tabs, it has tab groups...

@derobert Which actually sound kinda handy.

So you get madly proliferating tab groups, each with endless tabs in them

slm
I have 25

@FaheemMitha It is.

@slm 25 tabs? that's restrained.

9:03 PM
You wind up with endless tab groups with endless tabs each... IOW, Firefox tabs are uncountable.

slm
it spikes to 49 but I always try to keep ~20

@slm So if you have less than 20 do you immediately open a bunch up? :-)

slm
@Patrick - yeah I don't want the other tabs to get lonely 8-)
I use TooManyTabs and TabOutliner to manage long running things
I also use zimwiki to manage research as I do it for Q's here
often times a single Q can prompt 5+ tabs as I try and wrap my head around base knowledge
I can generally A 2 Q's at time

I generally won't answer questions that I have to do a lot of research on. Usually means I'll get something wrong. But if the question is there hours or days later I might try.

@Patrick I don't because I'm too lazy.
I tried using Chromium's extensions to help with managing tabs, but I just got confused.
When I've counted my taps they tend to be in the 70 plus range.

@Patrick - the Q's are like puzzles to me so I like to try and do them quickly but high quality too. I always get bummed when someone posts and A before me on a Q I'm working on, so sometimes I might give a rough A and post it, then flesh it out just so it's there first. It's stupid but this is how I keep myself motivated to continue A'ering.

I don't think it's stupid. I can perfectly understand that reasoning.

slm
The one area that I've continued to push into is awk, it's like a Gordian knot to me.

If I have to start getting wild and crazy with awk, thats usually when I pick a higher level language

slm
I asked a Q to Hauke the other day, he used a trick that I hadn't seen w/ awk. When I asked he seemed perplexed that I didn't know about it.
same here
I often prefer to solve things with multiple tools since I find those solutions are easier for newer ppl to understand.

Yeah, I try not to dive into the higher languages when providing an answer

slm
9:25 PM
The logical progression of sort | uniq | ... is easier for ppl to digest then awk ....
IMO
Here's and example from today
4
Q: Counting the occurrences of the string

user70485As input, we have some ids which are strings. How do we calculate what identifier has appeared most frequently and how many times? Example Input: cat dog cat dog dog dog dog fly spider spider cat cat Output: dog 5

Yeah, I'd definitely just use sort & uniq there. awk could do it in one command, but it's just simpler

slm
@Patrick - BTW got the OK.

@slm for 9th & 10th?

slm
yeah
LMK what to do next

k. I'll get things moving over here. you'll get someone contacting you shortly

slm

@Braiam what the... I'm a Perl programmer, and the name of that site is, I swear, line noise.

@derobert "BerkeleyX CS169.1x: Engineering Software as a Service" baby!

There is a SE site for a single class???

yup
there's a thing somewhere explaining this

10:02 PM
@derobert Speaking of perl and line noise…

Q: Write a program without using a character twice

RunemoroWrite a program that does something as complex as possible, but without using any character (excluding spaces, but not tabs) twice (Except quotes, which you can use twice). The winning program will be the most-voted one. Extra rules: The program cannot require internet access to work. The prog...

@derobert WTF?

m{@ARGV}?$c+=1:2for<STDIN>;eval(_PEOBFQZzCJUKMYLHXW^q[/",!6du9&-hn.508i|4])
I'm sure this can be improved significantly

@slm Look at @Braiam's cucumber a few lines up...

@derobert HEY! Stop telling people to see my cucumber... I feel shy!

@Braiam I'd be more worried by the fact that it's invalid.

10:11 PM
@Braiam Wow, that's weird.
@derobert That was my reaction too.

I assume these are online courses.

@slm, do you ever sleep? I see your answers in almost each and every question :)

slm
@derobert Yeah, what the heck's up w/ that class site...
@Ramesh Yes in between A'ering Q's 8-)

@slm, ha ha. That is the reason I was hoping you would be the perfect fit for moderator.

10:30 PM
@Ramesh slm doesn't sleep, he waits ;)

slm
I'm thinking I'll throw my name in.
Would be fun to try something new.

@slm, I believe you are virtually doing almost everything now.
@Braiam, now no more sleep for @slm :)

@Braiam Cue Chuck Norris jokes with @slm's name replaced.

slm
8-)

Heavy competitor for chuck norris. Just by thumping his thigh, this guy made the train move in the reverse direction. :D

10:40 PM
@Ramesh Oh, dear god. A Hindi film clip.
I'm tempted to post a clip from Sholay, but won't.

@FaheemMitha, ha ha. Let us not :D
