7:00 PM
so i'd have to be a clean install

anyway, sorry i haven't been more assistance. I don't even run squeeze any more, so it is not so easy to reproduce the issues for me
@trelosae you are using some special purpose distribution?
why?

well it has a web panel to config and monitor the system its pretty neat

@trelosae what is it called?

it has even has an online demo if you want to check it out

@trelosae Ok. Well, mixing and matching distributions is always a headache. Unless you really need to use it, I'd recommend vanilla debian wheezy, and save yourself a lot of bother.
personally, i think life is too short

7:06 PM
yea i might do that
thanks again for your help
i'll try what we discussed with 0.17 and report back here

@trelosae Ok. i'd recommend talking to the debian maintainers if you want to pursue it further. also possibly upstream. they would know what the errors you get mean, and could recommend how to best proceed, probably. of course, this assumes they are willing to talk at all, which is of course not guaranteed.
@trelosae btw, what is your location?

@FaheemMitha greece

@trelosae ok

@FaheemMitha you?

@trelosae Currently, Bombay, India.

7:09 PM
@FaheemMitha cool

7:31 PM
@trelosae you still there?

@FaheemMitha yes

@trelosae ok, i tried a different strategy, which worked for me on wheezy at least
you can use the 0.16 packaging with the 0.17 tarball as follows
do an unpack of both. then simply copy the debian directory of the 0.16 to the 0.17 directory. first rename the original debian directory to say debian.orig
then you need to add the changelog entry for 0.17 to that debian directory. after doing that it built for me on wheezy

okay i'll try it right now

it also installed
what was the sql file thing?

sticker.sql
on /var/lib/mpd
on the changelog should i change the version to 0.17?

7:36 PM
@trelosae Right. Looks like it is created on installation, and it is there on my system
@trelosae yes, just copy the top entry from the debian.orig directory
that is what i did

ok

you don't need to modify any of the existing changelog. just add that entry

oh and now i don't need to change the control and rules, cool

@trelosae yeah
if it works ok, let me know, and I'll add an answer.

7:47 PM
@trelosae Oh, that's too bad. is that /var/lib/mpd/sticker.sql there?

@FaheemMitha nope

@trelosae Hmm. Well, you could consult upstream. There may be a simple explanation. Did the binary build Ok then?

the compilation went smooth ye
how could i get in contact with upstream

@trelosae Ok, well I suggest you write to the mailing list and explain what you are trying to do. They may be able to point you to an answer. probably the conf file or something needs to be modified.
@trelosae They should have a mailing list

7:52 PM
there are even irc channels. you could try those. you could also ask the Debian devs. they know the packaging, if they can be bothered they could probably tell you the problem.
@trelosae no
@trelosae as far as devs go, look at the main debian packaging portal - one sec
if you click the mpd maintainers link you get a page with an address
mpd maintainers <pkg-mpd-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org>
they have their own mailing list

alright thanks

don't count on a reply. they are all volunteers after all. you could also try the user or dev upstream mailing lists

@FaheemMitha there was a permission problem in these folders
i fixed it and it now works
it installed
oh my god thank you so much

@trelosae Good to know. What was the permission problem?
I was going to point you to
which looks related at least.
so, should i add an answer?

they belonged to a different user
yea add one and i'll mark it as correct

8:00 PM
@trelosae Ok, will do.
@trelosae which directories belonged to a different user? just curious

/var/lib/mpd and /var/run/mpd
it was from my previous install of mpd

@trelosae Oh, I see.

and i had totally forgotten i changed the user

I guess a purge would have been a good idea in that case. ok, writing an answer now.
does it run correctly?

it seems to be responding
i'll add the music library now

8:10 PM
@trelosae i've added an answer. if you think more is needed, let me know.

8:25 PM
@FaheemMitha i've just tested mpd and it works fine as far as i can tell
thank you again

@trelosae Sure thing. Check my answer - see if it looks Ok.

yeah i've accepted it

@trelosae Thanks. I guess that was a bit of work, but hey, you learned something.

oh i sure did

Are you a sysadmin or something? Or just a hobbyist?
hey, i just passed 7000! whoo-hoo!

8:30 PM
hobbyist
uni student actually

@trelosae ah, Ok. so you have some spare time. i wondered. what university is that?

electrical engineering
what about you?

@trelosae no, i meant which university do you go to?

aaah duth

@trelosae I used to work in the US. Now back in India. I used to work at Duke in Durham, NC.
Before that I was a student at UNC-CH.

8:33 PM
oh nice

well, i'm off. hope to see you around on the site.

see ya
