Q: What is the difference between 'su -' and 'su root' ?

ripper234I understand that root doesn't have to be a superuser. But in case it is ... what is the difference between sudo su - and sudo su root?

Q: Output compiler options from SSH

theconnorpowerHow can I list the configuration options that SSH/SSHD was compiled with? I'm attempting to troubleshoot a SELinux configuration issue, and want to make sure that SSH was compiled with --with-selinux.

@UnixandLinux Nice not to always be the first to vote to close as duplicate
@Caleb Good work, I'll soon be able to retire (:

@Gilles I almost asked on chat or meta if I was being too heavy handed asking to close a popular question, but I really couldn't figure how it added value to things that people could learn by reading the other questions. The OP's comment on meta about specifically not spending much time doing research before asking definitely factored into my choice. I did refrain from downvoting him for the lack of research, but I was tempted.

Q: People who don't use Google

Dharmit ShahI find many questions on http://unix.stackexchange.com/ which, I feel, should be searched for on Google before asking here. I am sure that there are many others who feel the same. Does SE have some provision for preventing such stuffs? What I feel is that people who ask such questions here are e...

@Caleb Popularity doesn't matter when deciding to close. Popular questions are often bikeshed questions, which are often not good questions.

That was a valid question, but not a very interesting one. We don't need yet another copy of it. It's an exact duplicate of the earlier one. Don't feel bad about closing it, it's exactly the right thing to do.
@Caleb To the asker's defense, it's not easy to search for punctuation like su -. But he could have browsed the tag.

@Gilles In general that's true, but I didn't have any problem finding potential duplicates just by entering su root. I can't imagine the question form didn't suggest the same possibilities when he asked.
@Gilles I wouldn't start counting your benefits just yet. It takes more than one bulb to keep the lights turned up. I don't know how you manage to put in as much time as you do.

12:55 PM
@Caleb You can test for yourself… And no, it doesn't. I think the question and its duplicate are too short for the suggestion algorithm to work well. Here, it's picking up on “where's the difference”, and the earlier question doesn't use that phrase.

1:20 PM
@Gilles So if I'm understanding things correctly there are 22 folks with vote-to-close privileges here on unix.SE but only the three of those that are moderators are notified of pending votes or have any way of spotting things that might need their vote other than stumbling on them. Is that correct?
And unless 5 of those 19 actually spot the question and weight in, it really takes one of the three mods taking action for anything to happen.

1:33 PM
@Caleb There's a list of pending close votes in the 10k tools as well. I don't bother with it because I read most questions anyway.
@Caleb The mods look at the list now and then. If you voted to close a question and it's not closed after a couple of days, you might mention it in chat and Cc @MichaelMrozek.
Some sites have a chat where they post links to questions that require closing. But U&L doesn't have enough chatters to make this useful.

@Gilles Brilliant. You are the ONLY 10k+ user that's not a mod. So you are only person with access to those tools and you don't even bother :)
The tool arrangement actually makes a lot of sense, we're just lacking enough high rep users that pay attention to stuff.

@Caleb Well, right now it's listing two posts with pending close votes, and I've already voted on both. What's novel is that I was the second in both cases.
As a point of comparison, the SO list has 33 posts with close votes cast today, and that's only the first page (there must be many hundreds in total, but I can only access the first page). So there it's worth going through the list and piling on.
Lowering the requirements on 10k tools on younger sites has been requested several times, but Jeff doesn't want to introduce yet another level beyond private beta, public beta and graduated.

@Gilles I think that's reasonable as long as the mods on younger sites stay on top of things. I can see where people might have complaints about that if they don't.

1:53 PM
@Caleb If you don't like the moderators, complain on Meta! (I think U&L is the most well-mannered site on the network. Just about any other meta site has significant amounts of whining.)

@Gilles Actually I've been impressed myself. My comments aren't a complaint against any U&L mods.

2:20 PM
In fact my first real exposure to U&L beyond following referals from ServerFault was digging around through stuff folks had done so I could participate in the moderator elections with some idea of what their participation had been like. I liked what I found and didn't leave. So A+ to mods. My comments are only directed in wondering what I can/should be doing along the way, not trying to get somebody else to do something different or extra.

Q: How can I call other shell script like a subroutine?

EonilIf I want to call other shell script and wait for its completion, how can I do this? I want to pass input arguments and receive returning result code. And continue running rest of codes.
