10:06 PM
Morning!
(It's 4 PM but ignore that)
(I spent six hours straight playing minecraft)
@pxeger Probably, although are you planning to add more features? If so, it might be worth waiting and bountying an answer that gives a more complete picture of what the language is like.
@Mayube It's harder when you don't type with home row and instead just move your fingers to the correct key

@Mayube you feel like you're going to have a bad time your data leaked

@RedwolfPrograms wdym?
Isn't typing literally just moving your fingers to the correct keys lol

Like instead of typing correctly with your fingers on asdfjkl;, just hitting every key with one of two fingers

o.O

@RedwolfPrograms no, thats more hours

10:14 PM
Timezones are annoying

@RedwolfPrograms it's actually 9am here lol so mornin'

@user but i have similar timezone but a little bit more.

Y'all ever just have lasagne for breakfast?
Because I do

Ooh I just found a video which looks like it'll be fun to watch:

no but that sounds good

10:19 PM
Nice

Link plz
I wanna either cringe or laugh at it

oh boy

> Unfortunately there are too many neckbeard gatekeepers on stack overflow. Yourself on the other hand, have a wealth of knowledge and you generously share it with others. They need to be more like yourself.

10:21 PM
@RedwolfPrograms neutrino?

wait is this about diamonds or the community moderation?

I kinda doubt these people care about the difference lol

@hyper-neutrino I don't think this person actually knows enough about SO to know that lol

They probably lump high rep users in with mods

TBH like with most bullshit there are elements of truth
that is everything they and the comments have said... hold some amount of truth to it, as in it is present but is in no way prevelant
the -42 example at the start is quite obviously cherrypicked like most totally garbage-tier questions only get like 10 downvotes lol

10:22 PM
I mean SO's moderation is too robotic, which makes it a bit unfriendly, and the cherry-picked questions they're showing did get handled poorly.

and there's a reason you can delete shit too, and if you don't delete it you're asking for more downvotes

Nov 7 at 16:24, by pxeger
Nuance? In my internet!?

@hyper-neutrino -42? death answer?

voting is quality control and if something you post is low-quality and you choose to leave it it'll just accumulate more quality control lmao

I think the problem is that too many people take votes personally and misinterpret comments in negative ways

10:24 PM
to be fair moderation is a bit robotic
especially with preset anonymous review comments

Commenters can also be more hostile than necessary
@hyper-neutrino Oh yeah, I'm sure getting one of those is going to piss someone off

but SO can't really afford to take moderation as personally as we can... like I can carefully inspect every single incoming question and answer

Still, it's hardly toxic

on SO you can't even look at every question in detail faster than they come in
@user that's definitely true

It's hard to take the time to add a human touch to your comments when people don't take the time to think through the problems they're asking

10:25 PM
as much as I broadly don't like this mindset, TBH a lot of SO negativity comes down to "really, it's your own fault"

Yup, the Tour should really be a mandatory read rather than a little badge no one cares about

i remember that one screenshot caird sent of someone on reddit complaining about it and you can see the peer pressure badge on the profile and Informed is their next available badge... lol

A lot of the cynicism higher rep users have is because of these low quality questions (not that it's a novice's fault that users before them posted such garbage, but you know what I mean)

yeah. unfortunately a reviewer's patience wears out eventually but to a new user it looks like the entire community is just as bad as someone who's gotten tired of crap at their worst
this is why i write template comments, so I can spend like 3 seconds looking at a garbage post and still give reasonably constructive and "nice" feedback on it lol

10:28 PM
The video talks about how new users don't have the ability to vote to reopen their questions, but...it's their own question, why should they be allowed to vote to reopen that?
The obvious solution here is to genetically modify humans to be more rational and less stupid

also if you edit a question it automatically queues it for reopening
not that i'd expect someone like this to actually know anything about the system they're complaining about
@hyper-neutrino which is actually bad because half the time the edits aren't to fix the question it's to fix typos, or it's insufficient and only adds a few details, and then it just gets shot down in queue again, like this did

Perhaps putting it into the queue should be opt-in (it won't matter much here, but would probably save time on sites like SO with lots of stuff in the queues)

wait
i am not smart
it is opt-in
there's a checkbox that OP ticked to say the edit is sufficient, lol

bruh

10:32 PM
i forgor they changed that recently 💀

clearly that's all the details and clarity it needs, smh

@RedwolfPrograms The example at the start is literally the reason that SO is "mean"

???

So many people post "How do I do <insert f*cking basic thing here that I could've googled in 10 seconds>?" questions, then get mad when people who see thousands of those questions a day don't want to help them

yeah holy shit what the fuck is that question

10:42 PM
> I see this as a valid question
Someone hasn't read the tour

that first one is even worse than the average could have googled it in 1/20 the time it took them to write the question, they literally already know about python string splitting and somehow never realized the method can take an argument

And still proceeds to make a 12 minute video complaining about the "tyrannical mods" of SO

One thing that did surprise me is that this answer on meta said that you're not supposed to open chatrooms to help OPs of closed questions out. Why's that?

> So... can anyone recommend a Q&A site that is actually what SO is meant to be, and lacks the toxic, overbearing gatekeepers?
> Q&A site
SO

10:44 PM
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

SO is not a Q&A site, and that's what 90% of these people don't understand

"Okay, so SO has these standards, but I think they're wrong."
"Why is SO saying my posts are bad"

@user It supposedly "encourages" off-topic questions I believe

@RedwolfPrograms If only there was a place that told them that, in addition to a ton of other useful knowledge about the site?

Any Q&A site worth its salt would (or at least should) close these sorts of questions, though, so that the good ones can be found more easily

10:44 PM
i mean so is a q&a site compared to cg&cc, it's just not a conventional q&a site

@RedwolfPrograms If you don't want "toxic, overbearing gatekeepers", then go to one of the many places online that post programming help. But don't be surprised if the response is shit
Almost as though SO is designed to produce quality help

@cairdcoinheringaahing Mmm, I guess some users might take that to mean it's okay to ask those sorts of questions, but it still seems a bit harsh
@cairdcoinheringaahing And for free

@user it's probably more that people might start asking questions they know are shit and shouldn't be asked because it'll get them the help anyways

It's not like anyone paid for SO and then got yelled at, they're using this free site moderated by the community for nothing more than internet points and don't even bother reading the guidelines first

Anytime anyone complains about SO, it's always "Wah, people won't do my coding for me at high quality for free, they're so mean" and never actually legit criticisms of SO as well

10:46 PM
@UnrelatedString Ah

Also, god it bugs me whenever people complain about the mods on SO. They are probably the best part of the entire site, and without them, the site would be yet another shitty internet help site filled with spam. High rep users? Sure, complain your heart out. Mods? No, they're the "good guys"

People think mods are the only people who review

Hell, let anyone who complains about SO mods try to work the SO flag queue and then see how they feel

Since they never read the tour, they typically don't realize community moderation is such a major aspect of the site

they probably haven't even looked at the site enough to figure out that community moderation exists

10:53 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing do you like answering this?
(in Add++ or Commentator)

Definitely not gonna try it in Commentator :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing why not Commentator?

Because I don't really like using my languages, they're awfully designed and difficult to use

@cairdcoinheringaahing ok try Add++

But you all should try them! (so long as you don't ask me any questions :P)

10:55 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing design an easy to use language then smh /s

@lyxal Done. My new language is called "Here you go Lyxal", and it's identical to Python :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing vtc as dupe of yeethon :p

@cairdcoinheringaahing import sys;exec(open(sys.argv[1]).read().replace("lyxal", "caird"))

-a bunch of bytes: exec, takes input as a function :P

is it just me or are review audits really obvious

10:58 PM
In what way?

@cairdcoinheringaahing especially in triage often they just look too good to be in that queue :p more often they look way too low quality to not already be closed instantly lol
maybe i've just gotten lucky the past few audits tho ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ apparently it's worse on math.SE

@cairdcoinheringaahing what is your first BF derivative?

That's sort of the point. Review audits are meant to catch robo-reviewers; if you're paying attention enough to notice it looks like an audit, you aren't the target
@Fmbalbuena Does "Brainfuck but with a lot of bugs" count? :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing yes
because derivatives

@cairdcoinheringaahing yeah i guess that's a good point, if it were subjective enough an alert human might disagree it'd be a bad audit :P

11:03 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing why not showing the programming language?

"This question got closed as opinion-based, because it's asking if something is 'good' or 'bad' practice"
This dude: SO mods hate opinions
@Fmbalbuena Because I don't still have the first BF interpreter I wrote

@cairdcoinheringaahing bitwise fuckery?

Me learning Vim:

@Fmbalbuena That wasn't my first bf derivative. BF derivatives are boring, no one really keeps them around on purpose. I'm still not sure why I actually wrote and published bwfuckery

@user ?

11:06 PM
There's this joke about Vim being hard to do anything in and people struggling to exit it
That's a screenshot from vimtutor. The second lesson is literally on how you exit it

@cairdcoinheringaahing I hate this guy so much. "Why do SO mods hate opinions? No one knows" No one huh? Guess this page doesn't actually exist huh? Might explain why this dude's never read it

@cairdcoinheringaahing Dude (can I still call you that?), chill
No point wasting more time on this idiot
Let us waste our time in peace and code golf

@user No, I'm watching the whole video, because I hate myself :P

Me too ._.

11:08 PM
😔

@user <Ctrl+D>

@cairdcoinheringaahing i don't have the first bf interpreter i wrote either, but i think the college board does lmao

@Fmbalbuena Is that a Vim thing? What does it do?
@UnrelatedString Wait, why?

@user Halt
in Vim

There's no way that was on an AP test

11:10 PM
@user wdym

@Fmbalbuena Ctrl+D seems to be scrolling

@user where the learn vim website?

> Dude (can I still call you that?)

@Fmbalbuena College Board wouldn't write a question saying "Write a brainfuck interpreter"
@cairdcoinheringaahing Do you prefer El Duderino? :P

@user And interpreter?

11:12 PM
i literally wrote a brainfuck interpreter with a python tkinter gui for one of the apcsp performance tasks

Sorry, I only respond to "Her Grand Excellency" or "Their Supreme Highness"

and got a 5

@Fmbalbuena It's an editor, but there's a cool golflang called V based on Vim (TIO)

"His Wonderful Greatness" is acceptable, but you're on thin ice :P

@user I like Vim than V

11:12 PM
V is basically just Vim with more features

ctrl-D seems to move you to the start of the last line

@user Learn Vim?
not V?

@cairdcoinheringaahing Their Supreme Grand High Wonderful Excel Greatness, chill

@cairdcoinheringaahing I dunno...looks like I'm standing on carpet to me

@user I'm only okay at Excel

11:14 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing if I use "Their Outstanding Excellency" will I be standing on medium-thickness ice?

@Fmbalbuena Are you asking if I would recommend learning Vim?

@hyper-neutrino That's suitably grand, I'll allow it :P

@hyper-neutrino No, you'll be standing somewhere outside it, but not necessarily on it

@user i need to learn vim first and V later

Go for it

11:15 PM
@user where i go?

i don't think you necessarily need to learn vim first
is not a bad idea though since vim useful for real applications; V is mostly for the golfing

@Fmbalbuena idk lol, install Vim from the website or sth

@user ???????????

@hyper-neutrino I feel getting a feel for the base language first would help you with V later
It's like practicing diving without learning how to swim first

11:17 PM
@Fmbalbuena Website. Once you install it, it'll tell you how to do stuff (:Tutor draws up a tutorial)
@user (I'm sure you could dive without swimming though)

well sure, you can also skydive without a parachute

how i do download

That's going to be a little fatal

@Fmbalbuena download button on the left sidebar

@Fmbalbuena Did you see the website I posted a link to above? It's right there lol

11:18 PM
wow this site looks ancient ngl

@user yeah but how to download

ikr

@user I'm stuff

Vim is pretty accient

@user i'm on windows 10.

11:18 PM
@stuff ಠ_ಠ

Really lyxal

@Fmbalbuena just click the download button it literally has instructions for windows

@user yes

@hyper-neutrino I kinda want to try that someday (not necessarily without a parachute though lol)
I'm just too afraid of heights for that

not done
@user hey

11:35 PM
Yes?

the names...
of mods...

Reject April Fools Day, return to JoKing Day :P

@Fmbalbuena smh you're not JoKing, you're Fmbalbuena

@user is there Vim REPL? how to do?

use it as an editor

11:50 PM
@UnrelatedString how to do?

Look up a tutorial online or type :Tutor in Vim

??? :Tutor ???

as a command
in vim

how i do execute by seeing help by executing :Tutor

Here is a tutorial

11:58 PM
hjkl, not wasd?????

is there way to change interactive mode?
