17:00
@pxeger a 1994 movie widely regarded as one of "The greats" in pop culture.
good though
@Mayube I knew noone would get the reference
y'know what's a really weird movie? Watership Down. Definitely traumatized a lot of children
@Mayube I still want to watch that one. The book is pretty great.
oh yeah isn't that like
actually really fucked
17:01
@UnrelatedString Yes
iirc it does like
minimal actual adaptation of the book
@Mayube I can guarantee you the book has traumatised some children as well
@UnrelatedString I think (not having seen more than a few clips) the main problem was that PG-13 didn't exist at the time, so it was rated PG when today it would definitely have been PG-13
Probably, but the visuals of the "couldn't get out" scene in the movie will haunt me forever
@Mayube that was honestly. what the hell. as a kid, you watch it going "ooh, cute rabbits", and then. just what the hell
@DLosc The ending is still super confusing
17:04
To this day people crawling through tight spaces makes me feel very claustrophobic.
@cairdcoinheringaahing Absolutely, but I don't count that as part of "the part with HAL and Dave." That's "the part with Dave and the Obelisk and a bunch of trippy visuals and... wait, what?"
the opening is kind of normal
you do have to watch it at least twice to figure out what's going on tho
@Mayube Widely regarded as one of the greats, because it is one of the greats :P
@cairdcoinheringaahing It was alright
Felt like the kind of movie we'd watch in english class after reading the book, in the same vein as 'Of Mice and Men'
i know enough of the outline of it to not have at any point actually felt like watching it
17:09
Granted, it depends on what kind of movies you like, as to whether you'd enjoy it. But it's just such a good movie
though both my wife and I struggled to hold back tears during Brooks' letter
spoilers!
Spoiler: At the end of the movie, Shawshank is redeemed
6
(I haven't seen it)
@pxeger it's only been {n} years!
@DLosc arguably untrue
I don't know enough about markdown to know how to do that
@Mayube [hover for spoilers](https://example.com "spoiler text") hover for spoilers
[hover for spoilers](https://example.com "spoiler text in quotes")
@cairdcoinheringaahing I don't like that method of adding spoilers
@cairdcoinheringaahing ninja'd
17:11
pretty clever though
(with the "adult life" part changed to whatever you think suitable if you're not technically an adult yet)
> in your adult life post-2000
my entire life is post-2000 :P
@cairdcoinheringaahing hover for spoilers
@DLosc Probably none, I'm way more critical of movies and books than anyone I know
@Mayube oh yeah, that too
17:14
@DLosc Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2
(sorry wrong reply)
How am I supposed to remember every movie I like that I've seen in the past 7 years???
of the 3 movies i've seen this month, 2 came out this year, and both have >80 on rotten tomatoes
@cairdcoinheringaahing oh that one was pretty good
@Mayube I probably see 5 movies a year, so: pretty easily
i thought it was an awful movie, but I liked it anyway :P
17:16
@pxeger likewise, but that doesn't mean I remember them
I would've liked Hereditary (2018) a lot more if it hadn't gone supernatural horror and was instead just a drama about how what happened to the daughter tore the family apart
@DLosc It took me a while to come up with one, but I did: a movie I picked up on a whim from a dollar store called A Little Game. I'll freely admit it wasn't the best, but I like chess movies, and there was a sort of magic realism component to it that was interesting.
Talking about movies, I'm going as The Dude from the Big Lebowski for Halloween this year :P
haven't seen it :P
basically, i'm wearing pajamas and a bathrobe to the 4 different parties/clubs I'm going to over the weekend :P
I've been getting into cosplay prop-making lately. By next year I might have a serviceable XV-22 battlesuit for halloween
17:20
cause if I'm doing things for halloween, I'm going to be comfortable while i do them :P
This year I'm going as a weeb hiding in the basement with his wife and housemate :P
@Mayube Oh cool, HN isn't the only weeb here :P
@cairdcoinheringaahing I guess Ontario is just home of the weebs :P
May 6 at 21:53, by caird coinheringaahing
> If you call me a weeb I will 11 you.
@cairdcoinheringaahing Be careful :p
17:27
This is the only reason I want a diamond, is so that I can make "HN is a weeb" jokes without fearing 11 :P
I'm not calling HN a weeb, but from HN's autocomplete list, a was anime.stackexchange.com
@RedwolfProgrammed whats this? its pretty.. you said heif but idk what that is :D
High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) is a container format for storing individual images and image sequences. The standard covers multimedia files that can also include other media streams, such as timed text, audio and video.HEIF can store images encoded with multiple coding formats. A HEIF image using HEVC requires less storage space than the equivalent quality JPEG. It "can store twice as many pictures in the HEIC format as in JPEG". AVIF refers to HEIF images using AV1 coding. It has "file size 10 times smaller than JPEG with the same image quality". HEIF is also capable of storing animation...
> During May 2020, online Advanced Placement exams allowed students to submit photos of handwritten responses. Because the website was unable to process HEIF images, students whose phones defaulted to this image format were considered to have not submitted any response and often failed to complete the exam.
wtf
that's what we in the tech industry call a "big oof"
PSA: Don't eat taco bell if you're working from the office the next day
I will leave the reasons up to the readers' imagination
@Mayube you can call me a weeb; I call myself that even though I'm honestly not even really :P
17:33
@hyper-neutrino I call myself a weeb but both my wife and my housemate are bigger weebs than I
impressive
ok literally everyone in my friend's (pretty small) discord is more of a weeb than I am
Although when I met him, my housemate's favourite anime was Sword Art Online...
@hyper-neutrino *cough cough* anime girl pfp *cough cough* :P
@cairdcoinheringaahing I wasn't aware lambda was an anime girl
@Mayube past pfp
@Mayube ok like I didn't think SAO was that bad like i watched the first season but yeah it's not great lol
17:34
@Mayube honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if there's some anime that turns greek letters into anime characters
finally, the real sigma male
3
Also, thoughts on doc ock from into the spiderverse technically qualifying as an anime girl? :P
SAO wasn't *bad*, but it wasn't *great*, and it got much worse after season 1.
Thankfully since then Shield Hero, Made in Abyss, and Jobless Reincarnation have overtaken SAO on his list
@cairdcoinheringaahing depends on how gatekeepy your definition of "anime" is
I maintain that, as Penny Parker is in the movie, it is at least partially anime. Thus, doc ock is a character in a partially anime movie, and can therefore be considered an anime girl
My friend insists on calling me an idiot for arguing this :P
the real elitists will tell you it's not anime if it isn't both in the common anime style and made exclusively by japanese animators
17:36
@Mayube i stopped watching like 2 episodes into S2 lol. i've heard alicization is pretty good
SAO abridged is hilarious tho
@hyper-neutrino and alpha male and beta male :P
CMP: A:TLA - anime or not?
@hyper-neutrino you fucker
you're going to tear this community apart with a question like that
17:37
@hyper-neutrino Avatar (the blue people), yes. Avatar (the airbender), idk haven't seen it :P
Looks like an anime, quacks like an anime, must be a duck
I prefer the M night shamalyan airbender movie over the airbender tv series
@cairdcoinheringaahing the blue people movie ceased to exist in the collective consciousness of society immediately after we'd all seen it
@RedwolfProgrammed I'm sure you mean turtle-duck
@Mayube clarified a little bit
17:38
ATLA is literally Avatar The Last Airbender; it's not even ambiguous cuz i didn't just write Avatar :P
Also, yeah, that's such a weird thing, that the blue people movie just. isn't a thing
@cairdcoinheringaahing I have no idea what you're talking about, they never made an ATLA movie
There is no movie in Ba Sing Se :)
@cairdcoinheringaahing ಠ_ಠ
@hyper-neutrino I have not watched any anime, so I'm not qualified to speak to this. Also: it's not
@hyper-neutrino As a weeb who's favourite show of all time is ATLA: I consider it anime, but won't list it if asked my favourite anime
17:40
@Mayube Honestly, I've never seen the tv series, but i do know this. and its such a good way to teach people about propaganda
@cairdcoinheringaahing You should watch it. Seriously, it's an incredible show
I don't personally consider ATLA anime since it's just an animated film; I wouldn't call spongebob an anime either lol
but it is a great show. CMP: opinions on TLOK?
@hyper-neutrino it's the style though. ATLA is in an anime style, though admittedly westernized.
@Mayube If I can find it on the streaming sites I use, sure
@hyper-neutrino watched the first episode, wasn't into it, dropped it
17:41
that's my main limiting factor with watching things
@cairdcoinheringaahing I can't remember if it's on UK netflix, but it's on Canadian netflix
@hyper-neutrino TLOK?
true. it's definitely more anime than most western produced animated things. so if someone considers it an anime that's respectable
@cairdcoinheringaahing The Legend of Korra (ATLA's sequel)
@cairdcoinheringaahing The Legend of Korra, the sequel to ATLA
@Mayube Unfortunately, I don't have netflix
17:42
ninja'd
@cairdcoinheringaahing I just remembered it's not on UK netflix anyway
well, you can get around such georestrictions thanks to the sponsor of today's video, NordVPN
@hyper-neutrino I saw the first season when I had only watched about 5 episodes of A:TLA, and I liked it.
That pisses me off, that netflix has different catalogs for different countries
@cairdcoinheringaahing licensing issues
When my now-wife and I were watching The100 together when I still lived in the UK, she was watching on Netflix and i was watching on Prime VIdeo
Yeah, I know there are legit reasons, it still annoys me
17:43
me too
@Mayube As an aside, I still find it weird that there are CGCC members with wives and families :P This site has always felt like a bunch of teenagers to me :P
@cairdcoinheringaahing I fit none of those categories :P
Like. It's not a new thing that adults are here. But it always gives me pause when someone who I think is a teenager (cause I think everyone here is) says "Oh yeah, just got to put my kids to bed"
@cairdcoinheringaahing When I joined in 2017 I was single and free. Around that same time I met a girl online through her partner, who was community manager for a 'game' I was working on. By august we were dating, she visited me in October, I visited her the following Feb, then moved to Canada August 2018. We got married in 2019 and I'm now a Permanent Resident of Canada :)
I think there are surprisingly few people under the age of 18 here...I'm actually the only one here that I know for sure is
17:45
I'm 25
@DLosc Funny thing is, in 6 months, I won't fit any of them either
I'm 19
@Mayube wasn't getting fired part of that story as well or am I thinking of someone else
@RedwolfProgrammed pxeger is, I believe
@hyper-neutrino Yes. I originally planned to move in April 2019, but i got fired in late July 2018 for working on my entry to the "Range" themed language design contest at work, and so expedited the move
lol
I mean, I suppose it isn't very "lol" that you got fired. but hey, seems it worked out :P
17:47
it was an incredibly toxic company and I was grossly underpaid
I mean I've never had a job before so I wouldn't know, but it seems like getting fired just for doing something off-topic would be a sign of a bad company
Ah, ninja'd
after moving to canada I got a new job immediately making more than double what they paid, so it is very much "lol"
@Mayube good for you for getting fired :)
oh. well that's great :D
getting fired > quitting, cause you can get severance / benefits / unemployment if you get fired :P
17:48
if you quit you have to give a two weeks' notice (or something like that). consider it speedrunning leaving a toxic company :P
@hyper-neutrino If Mayube was in the UK, I believe the company would've had to given them a notice as well when firing them
That said I'm not entirely absolved of blame for getting fired. I had previously been caught complaining about certain parts of the company's infrastructure in TNB, so when they caught me talking in here again on company time they assumed I was once again in breach of my NDA, without bothering to prove it

A: "Hello, World!"

Bbrk24Aussie++, 34 bytes G'DAY MATE! GIMME "Hello, World!"; Tested in commit 0a5de7e. You're supposed to end the program with CHEERS C***!, but as of that commit it isn't strictly necessary. The opening G'DAY MATE!, with trailing whitespace, is; anything before that statement is not executed.

I've since learned many valuable lessons about work. Chief amongst them being don't work for startups/small companies. They'll work you like a horse while paying you peanuts. I'm now working for a massive international corporation and have at least twice asked my manager for help with bugs in braingolf's interpreter during work hours
@Hello,World! Lyxal lang just dropped :P
17:54
yeah working for a startup unless it's like with your friends or smth sounds pretty stressful and not worthwhile TBH
Unfortunately, as a self-taught programmer with no post-secondary qualifications, startups tend to be the jobs I get
UW's co-op program (well, any co-op program, but UW's is probably one of the best) is really nice since I can get co-op positions are pretty sizeable companies with no more than a high school diploma and a year of university education, and it'll be great for my resume immediately out of uni, plus good connections, and that's assuming I'm not just offered a job before I graduate lol
You're attending one of Canada's most prestigious tech & engineering schools, I'm sure you'll have relatively little trouble finding a job
@cairdcoinheringaahing this rules
18:20
@hyper-neutrino that is cool. Are you at UW?
@Mayube that's a good lesson
@Anush yes
@hyper-neutrino that's great. I spent a little time there. Are you majoring in CS?
@Anush oh, that's cool. and yes I am
what were you there for?
I am jealous :)
@hyper-neutrino I did some work with one of the professors
This is an elite chat room!
I wonder what the most prestigious person we have had here is
depends on your definition of prestigious
18:25
@cairdcoinheringaahing not so good for the reference letter :)
@Mayube just use your own personal definition
@Anush Always get references from a coworker, not your boss ;)
@Mayube I like these lessons
Although I've never actually been asked for references
Fun fact: there's nothing stopping you from just putting a friend down as a reference, and them pretending to be a former employer
I am mostly wondering which language is going to be best for my challenge (ignoring mathematica)
@cairdcoinheringaahing fraud?
18:27
Any job that tries to make you worse off when you want to leave, by threatening you with a bad reference, is a job that you should actively undermine
@Anush I doubt anyone would ever try to charge someone with fraud for pretending to employ someone you didn't
They would not do that. They would just give you a luke warm/cold reference without telling you
@Anush The most important lesson I learned isn't really applicable to most others. I learned last year that I have ADHD and it explained a lot of the problems I've dealt with in life
@Mayube I hope it's ok
@Anush In the UK and Canada at least, references are usually just "Yes this person worked here", because any opinion the reference provides leaves them liable for libel/slander if it costs you the job
@Mayube except in universities I think
18:30
Wouldn't know, never went
It's how you get promoted too
Lots of letters
I work in the software engineering, promotions don't exist here
you want a promotion you apply for a higher position at a different company
Got you
What is betting on there being an answer to my question before I get up in 14 hours time?
Odds please
(I hate typing on my phone)
@Anush I suspect so, mainly because I think alephalpha is answering lots of questions in Mathematica recently :P
18:51
@cairdcoinheringaahing I wish the open source world would make more of an effort with math
sympy is just missing lots of things that they could do but don't have the volunteers
You can't solve simultaneous integer equations in any open source system that I know despite it being well known how to do it
(maybe I missed something that can do it?)
@cairdcoinheringaahing I look forward to the 17 byte Jelly answer
19:11
The upside is that I can ask challenges here for these things for years to come :)
I may have just created the worst language I've ever made. Here's a truth machine in PoilerBlate
19:50
5/7 not enough qualified names
ah of course, I need namespaces
Definitely.
You should have something like using namespace std, but per-statement :p
I updated the gist with qualified names for all stdlib functions
maybe by default the current program's namespace is Program unless you explicitly change it. so Function [ Main ] becomes Function [ Program.Main ]
Also why call it Main when I could call it EntryPoint
oh also I just realised the print is referencing I as a string without an explicit cast, can't have that
there, much better
19:55
you have to declare an EntryPoint at the beginning of the file (or rather, after 20 lines of imports), and the name of that EntryPoint has to be Main or the compiler errors
and of course declaring the EntryPoint is a function call, so Function < Reference > [ StandardLibrary.EntryPoint.SetEntryPoint ]...
true
oh yeah and since it's generally bad practice to mutate global state you have to annotate it with @NoWarnGlobalObjectPropertySet
ok I added imports to the gist
naturally you import StandardLibrary.Collection.Map and then use that to map a Collection of Strings to Global.ImportFunction
I managed to golf a hello world down to just 398 bytes
20:09
The import function should be user-customizable for maximum abstractness, so require it to be imported
How do you import import?
Maybe Import would be there, but the first thing imported overwrites Import
maybe there's a StandardLibrary.ImportFunctions that you can import with Global.ImportFunction and it takes a Collection instead of a String to save you the trouble of importing StandardLibrary.Collection.Map
Wtf I come back and the starboards changed completely???
We had a few great conversations today
20:17
@emanresuA You're #57 for most messages in TNB
@Mayube I can tell
@RedwolfProgrammed That's... unsurprising. Where do you find this?
Or do you have a script?
I have a script
TBF you're probably slightly higher than that, my data's a few weeks out of date
what's the full ranking
You were the closest person to 10k messages who wasn't about 10k at the time
20:19
We has been chatting
that we has
@RedwolfProgrammed Is that for me or UnrelatedString?
You
UnrelatedString's #78, with around 5500
Just below NSP :p
Wait...there's two NSPs?
20:22
@lyxal Have you started using parasites to control people's brains, or have you been stitching together limbs?
What're NP and SP ranked?
We had an XKCD feed at one point?
It only posted four messages, but...TIL
Unless they were moved here or something
Only posted once though
I have all of this data from TWTNB
Which I've stopped doing testing with because sometimes it'd actually start producing human-like conversation for a split second, and it got too weird
@Mayube øm
@emanresuA what language?
ø is a digraph character, which has different actions depending on the character after it. øm is palindromise; append the list reversed to itself without duplicating the middle.
oh nice
so far only language to tie APL
20:36
It's just a two byte built-in, so not really the most exciting way to tie it
@pxeger Stop stealing my ideas :(
the upside to all of the boilerplate in PoilerBlate is it makes parsing the syntax in PEG a breeze
20:47
Would anyone like to see a poem written by a markov bot?
(And edited by me a bit :p)
Stop stealing my project ideas :p
Dec 2 '20 at 2:50, by Redwolf Programs
I mean "Cloth jacket on us your side projecting steering as there he said, that bird's nest in his tread" actually sounds like a poem to me
I'd love to see how your bot does though
What's your training data?
Mine was Moby Dick
I tried that, it was... bad
My training data is stuff I've written
Wait, you tried Moby Dick specifically?
Just too many nantuckerers :p
Because I had to write a poem for a competition for school, and part of the rules were that it had to be completely written by you
I wrote some poetry for my English I class with a markov bot :p
Unfortunately only one or two lines ended up being usable
20:51
I spent several weeks goofing around with this thing, then on the last day realised 'Hey, this could be actually useful, I might actually get a pass'
Disclaimer: All individual lines are generated by markov bot, I gave it prompts and assembled the actually reasonable results (about 1 in 10) together.
The stakes.
A perilous, The seems; Keep sort of his First we saw it is about the medium slid with mosses harpoon, Then? You would ll.
Good job
Yeah, not particularly usable :p
I handle punctuation by treating each punctuation mark as a word - good idea or bad idea?
That's what I do too
I wouldn't say it's good or bad, it just changes it from unnatural in one way to unnatural in another
20:59
@emanresuA I used your AI poem as a prompt for another AI poem: gist.github.com/AMiller42/0cbe754ebf935870e50b4ff9ac3c18a7
@emanresuA hi.
Answers to the question you linked are not answers to my current challenge
Looks like this weekend is gunna be spent building a working PoilerBlate interpreter. This is gunna be fun
21:53
Is there a way to upload a photo to chat from mobile?
I tried this morning (for the excellent squidward portrait on my desk), but couldn't find a button to do it
Desktop site I guess 🤷‍♂️
upload to an image sharing service and paste the link here :P
Why the :P? Sounds reasonable
@emanresuA That's impressive, I've seen real poems make less sense than that :P
> I was an iphone 11
> Remember when you probably won't be a “significant natural area”
:p
Oh dear, is this what happens when you jailbreak iPhones? The caged AI inside the phone breaks loose and unleashes poorly written poems upon us? :P
22:07
I have an iphone 11 which is currently probably living a very boring life
I have an iPhone SE, wanna trade?
Sure
You gotta pay for shipping though :p
It's nice and small so you can swallow it and smuggle a few of them over when traveling to other countries
And throw in some cookies
Sounds like a plan
22:13
@user apple partnered with stack exchange??
Well at least an iPhone.SE won't be as dead as Windows phone
Isn't Ask Different basically that?
But for Mac too?
Since I missed the autocompletion fun yesterday, here are mine
Results may be inaccurate due to browser history accidentally being cleared a few months ago
"accidentally" :p
Okay it was because of that article about making a formally verified porn image browser using Coq and Haskell
@Anush Me, for some definition of prestigious
oh yeah I can do my autocomplete thing now that I'm home
Very odd results Perhaps Edge's autofill just sucks
it also quite clearly highlights some of the games I tend to play
Shoulda tried to get skids.dev instead of skidsdev.xyz, although I'm sure it's taken
I used to have skidsdev.com but I let it expire and some chinese scalper snagged it within minutes
IIRC at the time skids.dev was too expensive, same with skidsdev.io
@RedwolfProgrammed give me my stats
22:34
No :p
Dang
#33, with just over 20k messages
@RedwolfProgrammed Were you waiting for Lyxal to wake up all day just so you could tell them no?
No, I just decided to all of a sudden :p
Lyxal and user are actually right next to each other, that's neat
The people on either side of them have both been inactive for a long time though
@RedwolfProgrammed pretty sure user ain't sitting right next to me
22:36
@lyxal I am though ;)
Fun fact: There are just over 50k messages in this room by deleted users
do you have any way to determine how many of them were sent by user165474?
@Mayube that means you're either a box of teabags, a deck of cards, or my phone
And you probably ain't my phone
@lyxal Given I'm british, I'm probably the teabags
@hyper-neutrino I tried checking the user ids and got no matches, I can try display names
It'll take a minute though
22:42
@Mayube haha now I can doxx you
@lyxal you missed the conversation a few hours ago where I basically told my whole life story lol
> Australian afternoon
Get that garbage out of here
@lyxal How do you upload an image on mobile?
Or do you just switch to desktop to do it
@lyxal is that carpet or what in the background cuz that is dirty
@RedwolfProgrammed this
@hyper-neutrino carpet
@hyper-neutrino 8635
22:45
@RedwolfProgrammed thanks. so if you add that to my count does it change my position at all?
@Mayube well you said you were the teabag box, so that's you
Congrats HN, your deleted user has more messages than my main user :P
i mean it was active for quite a while lol
and it was from back when this room was much more active and i had more time to be active on code golf
@user I'm a little surprised that s isn't Scastie. But then, I guess you visit Stack Overflow a lot more than I do.
@Mayube also, it's not garbage if you're an Australian drinking it
22:47
Earl Grey or bust
Hell no
I like my tea to actually have strength :p
Not my fault you don't know how to brew a proper cuppa
@DLosc I was too, honestly, but yeah, I have to visit SO a lot :p (Scastie’s like the second one down tho)
@lyxal I bet your favourite hot sauce is "Da Bomb" too. All strength, no flavour
@Mayube I don't like hot sauce
22:51
I knew you aussies were upside down but I didn't know you were backwards too :P
@Mayube just because y'all are technically our monarchy, doesn't mean we have to have tea to your standards :p
@hyper-neutrino That would put you in 3rd, although with your current count it'd actually be 2nd
Oof
@lyxal I mean I'm technically a Canadian now anyway
@RedwolfProgrammed (My data's a little out of date since it takes a half hour to collect, uses a gigabyte of bandwidth, and probably makes SE's servers hate me)
22:52
In other news, I found the high throughput fizzbuzz on r/programming on reddit
1.5k updoots
Always nice to see CGCC in the wild
@RedwolfProgrammed Mice, am I 32 or 34?
:( I’ll get lyxal one day
22:56
Oops
That kinda looks like Leo’s pfp (the top mouse)
Coincidence? I think not!
@DLosc I always thought I was the Brain as a kid, but now I know I'm Pinky
I mean, it’s entirely possible you have similar taste in…whatever that is
it's a classic kids show that appeared as part of Animaniacs
6 hours ago, by DLosc
(I haven't seen it)
22:58
Ah
Of Mice and Men was quite a sad book, kinda overrated imo
The other reference that popped into my head for "Mice" was a fan edit of a webcomic, which I'm guessing nobody here would get, so I went with the better-known option.
