Legendary 98/150
I love it when I get exactly 20 upvotes on a single day :P

Also applies to Rust compilation errors, sometimes fixing the last one gives a bunch of more obscure ones (usually lifetime problems)

In my case, I need to change the collation of all varchar columns in the database to UTF-8. I tried a modified version of this answer on a test database and it worked great. "Finally," I thought, "I can put this collation nonsense behind me." Tried running it on a local copy of the real database. Hundreds of errors--because of indexes or something? But I don't see any indexes on those columns...? Argh!
I've been fighting this for days D:

Fun thought for the day: Why do we call them Jellyfish when they aren't actually shaped like fish at all?

Because they're soggy and squish like fish

Well, I've never felt a jellyfish tbf
Been a couple of inches from doing so before though, a box jellyfish

The picture was supposed to upload and be a supplementary image to my message

I never noticed how often the guy says "4" in this (old meme, I know)

2:00 AM
Why do we call them Starfish when they aren't actually shaped like stars or fish?

Many underwater living creatures are named (whatever)fish just because
and starfish does resemble ★

Actually, the root word is "Starf"

"Starfish" meaning "not unlike Starf"

:-) glad you all liked that one
In other news, any feedback on this? I'm probably gonna post soon:

looks like a combination of lexicographic ordering with topological sort, and extracting pairwise order from the dictionary doesn't look so trivial (which is a good thing)
and the part about the validity of the dictionary itself, too

Oh huh, are sponsorships for SE sites for a limited time period?
Oh, seems they are. That's nice.
Makes it feel less like they "own" the site, sort of
Just like a fancy advertisement

@Bubbler im glad its got a lot of fancy words, i didnt think of any of that :P
the original idea was to take an alphabet and sort a list of words to it, but when that turned out to be a dupe, i figured i had to change it up a bit
so i inverted the challengee
thats interesting that both of those things are topological sorting
its hard for me to wrap my brain around exactly how they are alike, only vaguely

Q: Alphabet Reconstruction

thejonymysterYou are a historian studying a long forgotten language. You have just discovered a clay tablet which seems to list all known words in the language, in alphabetical order. Your task is to find this alphabet's order, if it exists. The Task Given an ordered list of words, try to output an ordered li...

I have an almost working solution
When Jelly sum doesn't work on string lists

u can do it :O!

I had a Vyxal solution but lyxal ninja'd me, so now I'm doing it in Jelly

@emanresuA get gamed on nerd ;p

I did get gamed on
Almost identical

you guys are so good at this lmao

3:15 AM
@thejonymyster nah we've just had lots of practice

and it made you good at this :)

Well it does help that I made the language I used :p

hehe
i like the ∑stuff?⁼ frame

Ok, I've given up - Jelly is cursed

aestheetically speaking

3:17 AM
Oh wait, that's just smash printing (I think)

@thejonymyster then we've achieved a important goal :p

it helps that it also has this →?µ←
very compositional, like a painting with strong direction
now ill read what it actually does

@thejonymyster Lol that isn't actually a single unit
and are just no name variables
? just gets the input

thats beautiful actually

@emanresuA cursed fun fact, +/ does

3:19 AM
no name variable literally going into the side
just like
"thing that goes in here"
Yes! you do go in there!

@UnrelatedString Ik (I had ;/ because emoticons and I don't care about the order)

@thejonymyster →?µ← is equivalent to →x?µ←x which is equivalent to →really_long_variable_name?µ←really_long_variable_name
Functionally that is

i love that format :) i need to get into this extreme golf lang stuff, it is very stunning code

CMQ: Is this TC??
also my holidays get over tmrw :(

@PyGamer0 i'm not sure what the question is. if it's outputting the results of each python statement, then yes, obviously?

@JoKing thats a language
everything is in code

it's hard to write a program that doesn't use any code
why do you think it wouldn't be TC?

4:47 AM
@JoKing its possible he means "everything im referring to is in the section marked as 'code'"

@PyGamer0 it just looks like normal python. What's the specifications?

@lyxal no classes no multiline statements
everything is immediately printed
shall i call it phy?

just use exec ez

Even Python expression is TC

@lyxal no
then you can do multiline stuff

4:50 AM
@PyGamer0 even without newlines in strings
> ()+1cehrx (made from scripts like exec(chr(1+1+1)+chr(1))

and real gamers only use expressions

You don't even need exec or eval, lambda:() is also a TC set
cuz untyped lambda calculus

5:08 AM
@Bubbler how?
also how would i implement recursion if i dont know the name of the function / lambda in python?
i saw something in the Wikipedia

oh boy someone just claimed to be JoKing in zoom chat for my math lecture
do I tell them or not? /s

lambda f:(lambda x:f(x)(x))(lambda x:f(x)(x))

also phy now exists

and (lambda f:(lambda x:f(x)(x))(lambda x:f(x)(x)))(lambda x:x) is an infinite loop (at least theoretically; in practice you'll hit recursion depth error)

5:14 AM
so how would i implement the fibbonaci?

You can't use the built-in numbers, so you need to use a special encoding
Roughly this is how you do fibonacci in lambda calculus

5:31 AM
yeah

Wait, so ()=>x in JS is TC?

@emanresuA yes
if you ignore platform limitations ofc

Right

(xx=>(x=>xx(x)(x))(x=>xx(x)(x)))(x=>x) is a port of the infinite loop Python, which I'm trying to understand

Just go step by step and you'll see you're getting the same expression over and over

5:35 AM
Oh wait I see

Simpler version is (x=>x(x))(x=>x(x))

It's basically a way of bypassing name restrictions
You just call it on yourself
Very smarp

yes

very cool

@emanresuA it's called the y combinator actually en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixed-point_combinator
just in case you want to know the correct term

5:39 AM
Y is just one version of fixpoint combinator

Y refers to the one by Curry. There's another one by Turing, and one by John Tromp (which has the shortest SK-expression)
(Tromp is the guy who invented Binary Lambda Calculus and Binary Combinatory Logic)

in lambda calculus?

Uh no, that's not how Church numeral works
zero = lambda f:lambda x:x # apply f to x zero times
one = lambda f:lambda x:f(x) # apply f to x once
two = lambda f:lambda x:f(f(x)) # apply f to x twice
add = lambda m:lambda n:lambda f:lambda x:m(f)(n(f)(x)) # apply f n times then m times to x
Everything must be written in curried form
and Python is not the best language for studying lambda calculus because lambda x: is so verbose

5:55 AM
oh
so which is the best language?

Actually the best language doesn't exist yet, which is why I'm (silently) working on it
JS is an OK compromise
Unfortunately actual functional langs are all strictly typed, which is of limited value because e.g. it doesn't allow the above definition of fixpoint combinator
We'll hopefully have a nice interpreter when I finish going through this 300-page tutorial
4

6:22 AM
@Bubbler could you tell us more about the language you're working on?

6:48 AM
@HuỳnhTrầnKhanh It will run ULC programs, but there's no input method, and outputs will be formatted in systematic ways by assuming a Church or Scott encoding (Church only applies to numbers and lists; Scott will be user-definable because it can support arbitrary ADT definition)
so you can inspect (or "print") various structured lambda terms more directly

neat stuff, thanks

I guess the syntax will be somewhat like stripped-down Haskell, just top-level names and lambdas and type definitions
with main definition annotated with a "type" for formatting purposes

And I have a plan to implement a (top secret™) golflang using the same backend, which means I do need ~all of the functionality of Core (the language being implemented in the tutorial) anyway

7:04 AM
y'all with your secret golfing languages just make the specs public no one's gonna steal them ;p

I don't even have a spec yet, so nothing to make public :P

@Anush define "operation"
@lyxal but I want to be able to make a cool exciting announcement when it's ready, rather than drip-feeding it to my github stalkers!
@pxeger here's the relevant code: github.com/python/cpython/blob/…

7:34 AM
CMQ: Hows the codepage so far?

7:49 AM
CMM: Can I use phy to answer cgcc questions?
@RedwolfPrograms wat‽‽‽

8:29 AM
I wouldn't call it a language per se

@emanresuA why?

I'd just call it 'Python expression' :p

@emanresuA i need a short name

And a lambda function is an expression and a common form of regular Python submission, so I don't see much of a point

@Bubbler hmm you are right
@PyGamer0 [deleted]

8:45 AM
@PyGamer0 don't you implement recursion in the very code that you linked

@JoKing ?
the function is nameless

Python has the walrus operator though (:=)
oh i see, you're replying to bubbler about lambda calculus

You don't need that - (lambda x:x(x))(lambda x:x(x))

i mean, you could also just re-implement assignment too with multiple parameters
(lambda f,x:f(f,x))((lambda f,x:x if x<2else f(f,x-1)+f(f,x-2)),x)

Oh, that's nice.

9:01 AM
@JoKing very cool

1 hour later…
10:02 AM
@Bubbler it has some short forms like I for int, zip for zip_longest

Fun fact: Martin has exactly 10 more profile views than Dennis (22027 vs 22017), which are both almost exactly double my profile views (11004) :P
(Numbers correct at time of writing)
Ok, so I only bothered to check users with more than ~25k rep, along with a few select choices who I thought would be higher, but, there are only 5 users on the site who have more than 10k profile views: Martin, Dennis, Arnauld, me and WW. xnor is close (9.6k), but everyone else has less than 9k. Interesting

xnor is not close
xnor is xnor
how'd you miss that?

I need to get hired as a dev at SE. Then, on my first day I push a bit of code that nukes lyxal's fridge every time he starting typing that joke. Then, I'll quit and be happy :P

but there's no drafts in the room
so I'm taking over this one time with AI generated CMCS
Welcome to the 12th Biweekly Mini Golf. During this event, I'll post some AI-generated CMCs (Chat Mini Challenges) for you all to solve. This'll probably last 30 minutes, maybe less, idk.
6
AICMC: Given any positive integer, return the list of digits in its binary representation
AICMC: Given a positive integer, write numbers from it (largest to smallest) forming an arithmetic sequence with the difference of 3.
AICMC: Given two sorted arrays A and B of size m & n respectively (the intersection should be ignored). Return an array C containing elements common to A and B

@lyxal yeah, I think they started with sticky and whisk(e)y
@lyxal x=>x&-~x?[0,1]:[1]

AICMC: Given a list of floats [0. , .22, .25], find absolute maximum in time O(n). e.g for above array -> 0.25
AICMC: Print all primes between two numbers
AICMC: Find the smallest positive number with a sum of its digits equal to n. The result must be bigger than n
(italics means I've inserted text to make it make more sense)

@lyxal ruby, ->{_1.digits 2}

@lyxal Extended Dyalog APL:

@lyxal Vyxal: b

12:13 PM
AICMC: If a word starts with 'M', return in pig latin - eg. "Monday" would convert to "Ondemay". Take care of only string alphanumeric words (don't convert etc.)
(not really an) AICMC: You’re investigating sshd logins in your company's infrastructure when you find out that two unauthorized ssh logins occurred just recently. The last time you run your script, there were five unauthorized attempts from the IP address "127.0.0.1"

@lyxal ruby, ->{_1&_2}, or :& if implicit to_proc is allowed

AICMC: Given n distinct integers, count the frequencies of those from 0 to 10

@lyxal Extended Dyalog APL: -∘0 3…0⍨ Try it online!

AICMC: Given a set of characters (A, B), return all possible strings made from those chars.

@lyxal APL: (not sure what the parenthesis is trying to say).

12:20 PM
General rule of thumb for AICMCs: answer in a way that makes the most sense to you

@lyxal Ruby, require'prime';->a,b{Prime.take(b).filter{a<_1&&_1<b}}, exclusive

@lyxal APL: ¯1+10↑⊢∘≢⌸(⍳10),⎕ Try it online!

Looks like there's a draft in the BMG draft room after all:
in BMG Drafts, Oct 5 at 23:48, by DLosc
Draft: Given a word composed of lowercase ASCII letters, reverse the order of the vowels (aeiou) within it. Examples: code -> cedo; bureaucracy -> baruaecrucy; subtraction -> sobtrictaun

@lyxal Vyxal: r'æ

@lyxal APL: ⌈/|
@lyxal APL: ⌽@(∊∘'aeiou') Try it online!

12:28 PM
AICMC: Print all permutations of a string
AICMC: From integer 0 to N print all integers that cannot be represented as N^x, where x is any integer.
AICMC: Reverse the bits of an integer, example 1357 ==> 10101001 (please note that the example given is most likely incorrect, as it was AI gen'd)

@lyxal Extended Dyalog APL: ⌽⊤ or ~⊤ depending on interpretation.

Reverse as in swap (), or reverse as in NOT (¬)?

@AaroneousMiller as in reverse order (overdot R)
AICMC: A palindromic number which is the sum of 3 consecutive square numbers.

@lyxal are duplicates allowed?
can we assume we're given at least 2 characters? otherwise my code breaks

@pxeger I'll say yes, if it's convenient for you
13 mins ago, by lyxal
General rule of thumb for AICMCs: answer in a way that makes the most sense to you

12:34 PM
@lyxal Vyxal: bṘ

@lyxal I think this works: Enumerator.new{|r|gets;a,m=[""],->{a=a.flat_map{|s|$_.chars.map{|c|s+c}}};loop{a.map{r<<_1};m[]}} (ruby, enumerator)

AICMC: Given a sequence of integers, print the length and sum of its longest increasing subsequence.

@lyxal APL: 1~⍨⍳ with 0-based indexing (no numbers in the range 0…N can be represented as Nˣ except 1, which is N⁰)

Then maybe this'll be a bit more challenging ;p
AICMC: You are given a positive integer N. Output all semiprimes in range [1,N](both inclusive)

@Wezl example usage: echo -n yes | ruby -e 'puts Enumerator.new{|r|gets;a,m[""],->{a=a.flat_map{|s|$_.chars.map{|c|s+c}}};loop{a.map{r<<_1};m[]}}.take(100)'

12:39 PM
AICMC: Given a list of integers, remove the smallest possible number of elements such that all remaining numbers are even. (Essentially, remove all odd numbers)

very nice
and to wrap up the CMC posting, three final AICMCs:
AICMC: Given a non-empty array of integers, every element appears twice except for one. Find that single one
AICMC: Write a function that finds the largest product between three integers in any given array

@lyxal oops replied to the wrong message lol

@lyxal dzaima/APL: ⊢⌿⍨2| Try it online!

AICMC: Given a list of integers, check whether there's one integer that occurs an odd number of times.
that's all the CMCs I'll post for this event
y'all are obviously free to continue solving them

12:44 PM
@lyxal Dyalog APL 18.0+: {⍵~⍵/⍨~≠⍵}

@Adám where should i put it?

:-)
@lyxal Multi-dimensional array or just a flat list?

@Adám I'll say flat list

@lyxal Extended Dyalog APL: ×/3↑∨ Try it online!

@lyxal i like how this one is worded

@lyxal I'd say these were of surprisingly high quality. Did you filter out the best from a bunch of nonsense?

there's probably a better way of doing it but whatever

@Adám exactly

@Adám I'm guessing the AI was prompted with the results from a TNB search for CMC

12:49 PM
so what I did was take like 25 or so CMCs and BMG drafts to use as the prompt

wow that's not many

and I kept generating CMCs until I got something actually solvable

Now for creating an adversarial network to judge the quality of generated CMCs…

@pxeger that's the beauty of codex

several of these I thought could be made into full questions

12:51 PM
there were a few funny ones
36 mins ago, by lyxal
(not really an) AICMC: You’re investigating sshd logins in your company's infrastructure when you find out that two unauthorized ssh logins occurred just recently. The last time you run your script, there were five unauthorized attempts from the IP address "127.0.0.1"
one of them spelled Brazil as "Brasil"
> In a list A1,...An%13#A12...InB2....nnRn+mQnm-nM/N<Donde N=logn siempre se cumple (es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segundo_teorema_de_Berezout)
And occasionally, it'd start actually writing code to try and solve the problems too
also, one last sneaky AICMC:
AICMC: Given a list L of numbers and another non negative number x, determine if there are 3 elements in the array that sums exactly to x? Example : [1,2,3], x=6. answer is YES, 1+2+3 = 6
anyhow, it's time for me to go for the night
I hope y'all enjoyed the AI stuff, because I know I sure had fun generating them ;)
o/

@lyxal could you give me a link to ur prompt so I can see how u did it?

@lyxal What was your viable:garbage ratio?

1:08 PM
@Adám I'd say 1 in every 4 or 5 were usable

That's good!

(the link only works if you have a valid OpenAI account)
@Adám it does relatively well given enough data, and given that you use the right settings

@lyxal :D I'm special

If I didn't have frequency penalty/presence penalty set, it would just repeat existing CMCs
which is quite useless
and if I didn't have the temperature set, it would just generate the same CMC every time
Also, I lost the prompt I was using midway through the bmg because I accidentally pressed previous tab
So I had to quickly make a new one
Also, opening with a js/c style multiline comment works better than opening with a python style multiline comment for some reason
Anyhow, I'm going for sleep for real this time
o/

/o
I just went go use the chat search, and saw that there was already text in the search box. I really want to know what was going on when I put that in there, because it just says "caird furry"

1:20 PM
morning all!

only one way to find out
also howdy guten morgen
rise and grind golfers

Morning!
Did all three of us arrive at the same time? :p

would it be appropriate in a challenge to specify that only non-tc langs be used?

Might be interesting depending on the challenge

thats what i was thinking
i dont wanna commit to anything yet, but my idea was

1:29 PM
But keep in mind that some language count as non-TC that you might not ordinarily consider to be
Like C

well there can only be so many c solutions
also why isnt c tc again
that still escapes me

Limited pointer size

wow
i assume future iterations such as c+ dont have this limitation?

I'd assume they still do

huh, ok

1:31 PM
But idk

that might mess up my idea haha
a challenge that requires tcness, but you have to use a non-tc language, and your score is based on how many unique test cases you can handle vs code length
though that probably isnt good, since its just "how big number can you put before the 'repeat' command"

You could also restrict bounded storage machines and linear bounded automata

id have to read up more on those specifically to see what theyre capable of

Basically TC but with limited storage

ah
so thatd be C, gotcha
/ would handle that issue

1:34 PM
Only difference between BSMs and LBAs is that LBAs get an additional amount of storage proportional to the input length

oohh
the name makes sense now
id definitely need a better idea for the actual challenge + scoring criterion
would love to see some non tc golfing lang show up and hit the scene though haha

If Ultrarisky was golfy, then it'd count :p

nice
i better see an ultrarisky answer >:)

Its only control flow is a map function and a reduce function

yes and
maybe allow tc langs so long as their chosen subset of commands can be proven not tc? haha

1:38 PM
Sounds difficult to judge :p
Although a "longest subset of ASCII not turing complete in this language" could be a fun challenge
Sort of like the reverse of "shortest number of characters for turing completeness"

oh wow yea
trying to think of a sport analogy
or a converse term to "turing tarpit"

Should I sandbox that, or do you want to?

well, i do wonder if it fits the site?

I think it does, we have similar challenges

well, worth a try anyway
go for it, im at work :)

1:43 PM
Feb 28 at 0:59, by Redwolf Programs
Imagine having a job
:p

it was ur idea, ill probably still come up with something for the non tc langs only thing
@RedwolfPrograms i cant :O

@lyxal isn't that an old one?
