q18: is it a computer mouse
beat me to it
frick yes
hadn't been paying attention but there weren't many remaining things it could've been lol
now idk
07:03
My turn
Ask
And you shall be answered
what is it?
@emanresuA ^ :)
Yes/no questions
q1: Is it code golf related?
q1: is it a dog?
07:04
Nein
q2: Is it living
q3: Is it a tree?
bruh
q4: Is it a homo sapien?
07:07
No
qn+1: answer this question with a no or no
q5: is it a person?
@lyxal ^^^^
qn+2: the above answer is the answer to the next one
@lyxal no
q5(again): is it an animal?
07:09
No
q6: is it native to New Zealand?
q7: Is it in more than one country
q8: is it a plant
07:11
hyper why would you ask that
it's obviously a plant
it's living, but not a human or animal
have you never heard of bacteria
or fungi
hmm true
oh well
@hyper-neutrino no what are those?
07:22
some of the things that are living but are neither plant nor animal
one example: mushrooms are fungi, not plants
CMP: Is virus living or non-living
borderline living
Living only when its inside ahost

people hack on every video game
Hacking is inevitable

Were we playing 20 questions in TNB
If so that's exactly the sort of off topic clutter I 100% endorse
yes
I think we may still be playing
Although I haven't got an answer to my question yet.

That's odd. It's 3 in the afternoon.

welp I'm going too
see y'all tomorrow
@lyxal I did, but without audio :|
Also I keep reading "we the people" as "wet the people" and am disappointed to learn the founders of the US didn't intend the constitution to allude to a massive nation wide water gun fight
14:03
@WheatWizard You might be waiting a while for the answer :P
14:14
@NewPosts is this a dupe?
see my comment
It's sort of the opposite (going from all the same to all different, instead of all different to all the same), but they're very closely related
well, it's the same problem
apart from the 0 thing
Do we have any good examples of bad canned comments here?
I know I've seen them all around the network, but I can't think of any here specifically
@cairdcoinheringaahing Should be going live soon. Probably this week.
@BrowncatPrograms (no, because we've only had one of them so far :p)
It does look like all of the canned comments except maybe the "question is unclear" one would be totally useless here, though
14:26
@rak1507 I think they are basically the same challenge yea. Mine has the extra bit where the input could start with some zeros in it and I prefer the looser IO format of mine, but I think they are basically the same.
@BrowncatPrograms Although the "question is unclear" one is so remarkably vague it'd be hard to find a way to misuse it :p
Shitty Life Pro Tip: If you change your pronouns to I/me, when you rob a bank, the guard can only say "I saw the intruder! It was me! I saw me going into the vault and stealing the gold bricks!" and you'll get off scot-free. Easy money!
My opinions on the new review queues have steadily gone so far lol, I started with an upvote, then a meh, then a downvote :p
@user But you can never order food from a restaurant :p
"Number seven with a large drink for me"
No, but you can just steal stuff :P
Or just change your name to "my friend"
"My friend took my laptop! He broke into my house and stole my cat, too! I hate my friend!"
14:33
Why would you steal a cat after all that effort? It's like breaking into a house and then paying the owner a hundred dollars :P
@Catija Oh, that was good timing then :P
@rak1507 ot1h, yeah, I think they're dupes. otoh, I'd prefer WW's to stay open, as its more general (input can have zeros in) and I prefer the looser IO
1. Accidentally post a dupe
2. Make yours better
3. Get the other one closed as a dupe of yours
4. ???
5. Profit
@cairdcoinheringaahing Shouldn't the newer one still be closed, though?
Yeah, that's the better thing to do (to be consistent with site policy). Just stating my personal preference
Plus it feels weird hammering a post by someone who can hammer
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
14:45
Hammer fight?
Aw, ninja'd
Battle of the Hammerers :P
Hammer ninjas?
You mean ninjas wielding hammers? Interesting idea :P
How about a CGCC Purge where we have a 24 hour period where voting rings, mod abuse, etc. are allowed
Why limit it to just CGCC? :P
14:46
*suspends every user pre-emptively*
Maybe we should temporarily de-mod the mods though, it can't be too unfair :p
Give everyone on the network mod powers for the duration of the purge
@BrowncatPrograms What, you mean it isn't always allowed? :P
Maybe we can make the mod powers unlocked at rep amounts
@cairdcoinheringaahing Yes!
14:47
@cairdcoinheringaahing That might get a bit too crazy though
Anyone with 1 rep becomes a mod, anyone with 5 rep has the powers normally given to 25k+ users
At least put a 10k rep limit on it :p
@BrowncatPrograms Isn't that the point?
Maybe divide all of the requirements by 10
And make mod powers require 10k
Why divide when you can invert the rep requirements?
14:48
@BrowncatPrograms Divide all of the requirements by 0
Nah, make one random user per site into a CM level user :P
43 secs ago, by user
Anyone with 1 rep becomes a mod, anyone with 5 rep has the powers normally given to 25k+ users
You're going the wrong way
We must give power to the people and decapitate those currently in power!
Or, give random users diamonds after their names that don't actually correlate to mod powers, then give some other random users mod powers but no diamonds :P
Ooh I like that
Maybe make 50% of the diamonds actually have mod powers though
Or instead, each user gets a random power, but no one gets more than one mod power
14:49
@BrowncatPrograms So you want to take them out still
> take them out
Or maybe give everyone a limited number of mod power uses
Like 10
Or base it off of rep
Voting rings could be used to get more mod power uses
Once a year, every user above a certain (small) amount of rep gets to delete one post of their choice, no questions asked :P
@user So some users can nuke users, some can edit messages, some can delete them
@cairdcoinheringaahing Deletes sandbox
14:52
@cairdcoinheringaahing Ooh, like a cake day present?
Honestly the CGCC purge wouldn't be such a bad idea
I can't imagine what could go wrong :P
@user Yeah, like you get the Yearling badge, then get to go nuke a post of your choice :P
It would be extremely fun if someone made their own website that loaded pages from CGCC, but then let you delete pages and do other mischief (on that website, not on CGCC, I mean) just to give you a feeling of what the mods must feel like
Like inspect element but other people can actually see what you did on that website
One way you could kind of actually do this would be something similar to Stack Egg
14:55
I never got to play Stack Egg :( (although I'm happy I wasn't here for the drama)
Each site gets a "purge site" that they can play on, preloaded with the site's content at April 1st, everyone gets mod powers on that site and can do what they want for the ~36 hours that it's active
That would be absolutely amazing
and then maybe real mods can decide to transfer some changes to the real site
It would also collapse immediately
it would also be a fun way to encourage a site cleanup
14:56
Then, no one can get annoyed at someone nuking their actual CGCC account "for the lolz", because they can just come back and create a new account on the purge site
Mmm, maybe
Idea: Clicker game where you can only click on other people to give them clicks
@cairdcoinheringaahing Oh, if you can just revert changes, then that'd be great
@BrowncatPrograms Sounds more like a Reddit-style April Fools event

Speaking of important numbers of CGCC things, we're approaching 30k starred messages and that's going to result in absolute chaos once we're within ten :p

Have we had challenges for saying a number in all the main languages?
E.g. 12345 in Danish
Or Russian?
Define "main languages"
I have a Quipu answer to the Fibonacci Sequence challenge, but it overflows past 1836311903. The challenge says that it must "[generate] the Fibonacci sequence without end", so is it still valid?
I don't think so, especially given
> For the function that takes an n, a reasonably large return value (the largest Fibonacci number that fits your computer's normal word size, at a minimum) has to be supported
@cairdcoinheringaahing I guess languages with more than 10 million speakers, which doesn't include Danish
16:42
@cairdcoinheringaahing The answer itself would be valid, it's just that the interpreter doesn't handle numbers that big, if that changes anything.
what language is the interpreter written in?
I think "the implementation is the languge" would apply here
I wonder If one piece of code for all the languages is any shorter than one piece of code per language?
16:43
If there's an implementation in a language that doesn't overflow, you can use that, but otherwise, I don't think it's valid
@Anush Do you mean if a polyglot is shorter than just taking the sum of the byte counts of solutions in each language?
@Anush I can't imagine that would be especially interesting
@BrowncatPrograms yes
Depends on the languages
@cairdcoinheringaahing you mean not interesting even if restricted to one language?
16:45
I'm not sure how big of numbers the Esoteric IDE implementation of Qupiu supports, and I can't test it right now. I don't suppose anyone else knows?
Similar languages might be able to reuse code, very different ones will spend lots of bytes on commenting
Doing anything that involves natural languages just boils down to having to have a dictionary of words, and then looking up translations in that
@BrowncatPrograms maybe Spanish and Italian would work?
Oh wait you mean natural langs not programming langs lol
@cairdcoinheringaahing I don't think that's right. There are lots of rules typically
@BrowncatPrograms yes! :)
16:46
Well I guess it still applies, similar languages will be able to reuse strings
@Anush Having a challenge about converting a number into a word in a language isn't a bad idea (and I think we have a couple). Doing it with more than one language, ...eh
Yes. It could be fun
@cairdcoinheringaahing I am trying to find the challenges now

Q: Count to 100 in Danish

BlackCapPrint all the numbers from 0-100 in the right order using the Danish way of counting How they count Like English, they have dedicated words for 0-20, 30, 40 and 100 Instead of saying twenty-one and twenty-two, they say one and twenty and two and twenty Starting with fifty they say multiples of...

Thanks!
16:49
I don't know C# very well, but from a quick glance at the code for the Esoteric IDE, it looks like the Qupiu implementation uses BigInts, so I'll test my program on it and make sure it works properly, then post it.
Oh it's not in Danish :(
@Anush Unfortunately not :(
But challenges about numbers in languages can be interesting. I don't think it'll make it any more interesting to have multiple languages in the same challenge
ಠ_ಠ I hate questions that aren't properly tagged
Thanks for finding those
We need one for russian
Feel free to suggest it in the Sandbox :P
I may just do that :)
Mathematica will have it built-in

1 hour later…
18:03
@cairdcoinheringaahing Depending on the languages, I disagree
18:17
@BrowncatPrograms Wow, they said a Object instead of an Object, what heathens /s
CMP: ... or * for splat, or something else?
It depends on the syntax used for the rest of the language
Think something a bit python-y
I like ... because it's much easier to see the splatting than * and there's no chance of mistaking it for dereferencing a pointer or something
If you're going for a more concise language, maybe * would be better. Whatever you do, don't do foo: _* like Scala 2 does, though, it's absolutely horrible
I much prefer : for assignment rather than =. Opinions on that?
It's harder to confuse for ==, looks a bit better (IMO), and it's definitely nicer than :=

user41805100 rep to the shortest GNU sed 4.2.2 -r answer <70b to Count up forever outputting in decimal The program must output in decimal. You must use the -r flag, although with no penalty to the bytecount. The GNU sed version is 4.2.2, so you can use empty labels. The program must be less than 70 bytes...

@BrowncatPrograms i think k does that too
Please tell me this isn't the same language where functions that don't return return objects with the local variables :P
No, no
Shifty glances
@NewBountiesWithNoDeadlines relaying my comment here, basically for my bounty, the way the awarding system works is that once i see a valid answer i will start the bounty, then the bounty will go to the shortest answer in a week, even if that shortest answer may not be the first valid answer. do you think this reduces participation?
@BrowncatPrograms (It actually isn't though, it's a language called INW-NSL)
(With fairly normal and nice syntax)
18:39
@user well idk k (just realised that the 'know' in 'idk' is more savoir than connaître (as opposed to 'i dont know' where the 'know' can mean both) so my sentence sounds off (at least to my ears))
@user41805 actually nvm, i think it's just that idk doesn't often take an object
Oh no, I was talking about one of Redwolf's ideas that he mentioned above
@user41805 They were talking about a language I'd made a few months back that did that
k does use :, you're right
ninja'd
My ninja got ninja'd
It was an irrelevant ninja though
A samurai
18:42
@BrowncatPrograms splat
@user41805 idk, I've seen it used as a simple replacement for "I don't know" in sentences like "I don't know math"
@BrowncatPrograms Are you saying samurais are irrelevant ninjas? :P
Hmm, no. I think samurai is already taken, also
@cairdcoinheringaahing @AaronMiller Write this down! Write this down!
@user And I'd say the "idk math" is somewhat more on the connaitre side even if math is something you can know know
yes i'd say that it's connaître too
@user it is writed

One of my classes is officially titled "Txvsn Ngpa" in our school's grading software
I guess somebody slammed their head on a keyboard and decided that'd be a good enough name
You're kidding, right?
Isn't "Txvsn" how Texans spell "Texas"? :P
Okay so it looks like TxVSN is a real thing, no idea where "ngpa" comes from
I can't think of a way someone's fingers would slip and spell that. Rzcab Bfoa isn't a thing
@BrowncatPrograms Ah
18:59
Also this is not a privacy policy lol:
That's just the teachers' email signature in my school district
And it's what shows up when you click "privacy policy" on my school's grading site

@emanresuA I think this at 1106 bytes
YYYY-DD-MM is something i've never seen before
makes absolutely no sense
@hyper-neutrino Are mods able to edit the community-specific close reasons?
19:29
> This site is for programming contests and challenges. General programming questions are off-topic here. You may be able to get help on Stack Overflow.
Shouldn't that be something closer to "This site is for coding challenges and code golf. General programming ...."?
Make it fit with the site name slightly better?
that'd probably be a bit better? code golf is just a criteria for our "contents and challenges" in general though; i think to better reflect the scope we'd say "programming/coding challenges and related questions" since tips and other non-contests are acceptable
also I don't think I can actually edit the reason itself
I can create a new one and deactivate the other one which isn't quite the same because then close reason usage stats don't make sense anymore
I thought you'd edited one of them before?
> This question does not appear to be about code golf or coding challenges within the scope defined in the help center.
@emanresuA This one, I think, although my longest answer is probably this one
That definitely used to be "about programming puzzles or code golf"
And there's only one deactivated reason, and it's not that
that is our default community-specific close reason
yes, there is a difference. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
19:35
Ugh
I have to say, the creation dates for the close reasons are weird
2013-06-24 isn't a special day in the site's history, so I have to imagine its when the company made some changes to accommodate the network
wait, where do you see that date
Under the "Creation date" header in the table
> I’m voting to close this question because science :P
@hyper-neutrino Given that close reason stats only stick around for 90 days, I doubt it'd have too big an issue tbh
Is there any way to trace custom reasons back to the questions they were used on?
19:39
@cairdcoinheringaahing ah, didn't know
No, and I'm opening an FR for that (assuming one doesn't already exist) now
well, if we want to fix our close reasons, we may as well revisit this entirely and look to get staff to fix our default reasons too
17
Q: How could the default close reasons be improved?

Martin EnderOne of the more popular suggestions from We're not a Q&A site. But what should be done about it? was to improve the wording of the close reasons or maybe change some of them altogether. We've been asked to flesh this out in a separate feature request so that SE can look into whether they'll make ...

@hyper-neutrino I'd imagine they're stored forever, but us regular users can only see the past 90 days worth of stats
well if i do decide to change it i'll consult the TL for what exactly that action entails first
@hyper-neutrino *opens the CM/Mod meetup thread*
19:41
heh
being able to edit those (and just customize more things in general) would be really nice and i should bring that up myself
just for editing this site's though, that's something i'd probably just discuss with a CM (read: catija) in our mod room lol
@cairdcoinheringaahing Partially joking, but I do have a similar thing I've been meaning to add as an answer to that
