5:00 PM
@Pavel yea. but the code itself (not counting the bss) is smaller than java 8's solution. Good enough for me

5:45 PM
@Pavel Holy crap that's a massive onebox

just wanted to share a nice commit hash with you all:
in Charcoal HQ, 1 min ago, by SmokeDetector
CI on 000fffa succeeded. Message contains 'autopull', pulling...

Nevermind, sorry

nice onebox

Sorry for pointless ping, check message history

@quartata That's about the sound I make when I need to get up in the morning.

5:46 PM
not quite as good as this one we got a while back:
in Charcoal HQ, Jan 4 at 12:15, by SmokeDetector
CI on c0ffeea succeeded.
"coffee aaah" sums up a lot of things

lol

ngn
@Doorknob Your profile says "I have orbited the Sun 17 times." Do you speak toki pona? :)

@quartata And that's true whether or not you like coffee. Coffee... Ah or Coffee, Ah!

exactly!

5:50 PM
funfact: 0xC0FFEE is a nice light blue color that looks like lightning

@DJMcMayhem Yay, I'm the lone Nay

6:06 PM
@AdmBorkBork Not any more

Reminds me of a dad joke:
> Why did the horse make a poor politician? He could only vote neigh.

@moonheart08 why isn't it brown???
@AdmBorkBork could you explain? (I don't get it)

@ngn mi toki kepeken toki pona. taso mi sitelen e ni tan ijo ante, a a.
(I wrote that before I knew of toki pona, I'd probably just read something similar somewhere and found the wording amusing :P)

@flawr Neigh is the USian spelling of the sound a horse makes. It's a homonym of nay, or a negative vote. Thus the horse could never vote in the affirmative for something.

6:11 PM
@AdmBorkBork oh, didn't know that:)
@AdmBorkBork that is also roughly how you say "no" in swiss german:)

@quartata uhhhhhhh, not quite

@Doorknob really makes you think

ngn
@Doorknob cool! :) what does "tan ijo ante" mean? (I know the individual words but as a phrase, if it is one)

@Doorknob I haven't seen you in chat in a while! Got any vim riddles? :P

I should learn toki pona some time

6:13 PM
@ngn I was going for "for some other reason" :P

ngn
@Doorknob ah, I see, makes sense

@DJMcMayhem hi! yeah, been constantly busy with school and getting ready for college and stuff >_<

That's understandable.
Do you have a particular school in mind?

ngn
@quartata it thinks it's Japanese

Q: Find out my number neighbors

ChaoticI have an int array of neighbors. Each i row contains 4 values, representing North, East, South and West directions, respectively. Each, value represent a neighbor at the given direction of the i row, starting from 1º row, and can go up to 65,535 rows. The 0 value indicated no neighbor to that di...

6:17 PM
can I just say I take great offense at akesi being used to refer to lizards
lizards are cute

@quartata lizards are awesome.

"akesi" is supposed to mean "non-cute animals"
tsk
so offensive

@DJMcMayhem not sure yet, I've visited stanford and mit and such but the whole process is incredibly intimidating and it's unlikely that I'll get into any of them anyway

I really want to get into DigiPen but IDK if I will

@Pavel I got the campus tour last summer. It's so cool

ngn
6:22 PM
@quartata lizards probably talk the same way about us mammals :)

@DJMcMayhem IKR it's like the most awesome place ever

I think my lizard thinks that the worms I feed her grow from my fingers
like, I dangle my fingers down and worms sprout from them
it's the only explanation for why she then conflates my fingers for worms

@Doorknob have you already decided what subject you want to do? (I've been changing my mind a lot but have to start applying soon)

I've done the campus tour twice a year for the past 3-4 years
It's the dream

@quartata my buddy's beardie also does that. We have a working theory that he actually likes the taste of human fingers.

6:26 PM
this is how jurassic park started right
we should be more careful

Jurassic park was awesome though

@Cowsquack really not sure yet, I'd like to do pure math or something (though that's not the most realistic in terms of career options and such), but I'd also potentially be interested in CS or linguistics maybe

Well, that and the brilliant idea to clone hundred-million-years-old apex predators

Sweet, we'll be getting our theme in August.

@DJMcMayhem No repro

6:29 PM
I've also thought about doing pure maths, but decided against for a similar reason, so I'm thinking to do engineering (along the lines of computational neuroscience maybe)

@AdmBorkBork Hmm?
@Doorknob Linguistics is probably even more limited in career options than pure math

@Pavel See edit history

> July and beyond - Design, community review and deploy site themes to additional sites. source

@DJMcMayhem Ah

@Pavel you can always just start making comics about dinosaurs on the internet

6:32 PM
For every linguist that's tried to make xkcd, we still only have exactly one xkcd :P

wrong comic

Oh woops

get some education
dinosaur comics is the OG

IDK why I thought of xkcd
Probably because of the raptors

also because randall made fun of north for having a linguistics degree ages ago
typical physicists behavior. disgusting.

6:35 PM
Isn't Computational Linguistics/Chomsky's work Computer Science and not actually Linguistics

no, chomsky hierarchy just so happened to be relevant to CS later

@Pavel In my college Comp Linguistics is part of the Compsci program, while Linguistics is from the Language and Literature department.

@quartata But what does it have to do with linguistics

idk, it's just a formalism

Just because it's about languages doesn't mean it's linguistics, in the same way that just because painting has shapes in it doesn't mean it's geometry.

6:37 PM
didn't I have this exact conversation with someone

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I wasn't there

@Pavel What about cube-ism?

lol I was about to say that Picasso is shifting in his grave
not sure if that's an actual expression in English though >.>

it's rolling.
not shifting

Usually it's "rolling"

6:39 PM
the creator of that expression is rolling in his grave over that

ngn
@Pavel fields of study do overlap

Yeah but Chomsky has almost nothing to do with natural language

ngn
@Pavel he was a linguist before he became a full-time outspoken anarchist, wasn't he?

natural languages can have formal grammars

@moonheart08 sounds fair

6:45 PM
@quartata Sure, but when is that a useful way of desribing them?

always?

Really

i don't know about you but when i tried my hand at conlangs I started with the grammar

Conlangs are one thing but real languages have a mess of exceptions and colloquialisms that'll mess with formal defintions.

that's why we made more things

6:52 PM
Thank you for introducing me to Dinosaur comics by the way
This is great

no problem
few comics can claim to have lasted as long as it with such consistency
it's a great thing

@quartata questionable content is one of them:)

@flawr yasssss
I love QC so much
(I honestly don't know how Jeph draws it 5 times a week)

ngn
@Pavel When you're posing a conjecture about the importance of recursion in natural languages (see Universal Grammar) which goes against the established scholarly tradition of the time, it helps a lot to study grammars in a formal way and be able to prove that some grammars are more powerful than others. You're right about exceptions, but those are relatively few and don't invalidate the point of studying languages formally.
by the way, toki pona doesn't support recursion, deliberately :)

7:14 PM
toki pona?

very minimalist conlang

ngn
@Pavel it happened to be mentioned here about an hour ago, never mind

7:25 PM
I am trying to understand the second piece of code at codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/157490/9207 which looks sort of magic
what are the dimensions of c?
please :)
I can see that c is a list of lists and there are sum_{i=1}^{s-3} i = (s-3)(s-2)/2 lists in it I think
but how long is each list?

(@miles)

@quartata is he/she sometimes here?

occasionally. they were still pingable so it should show up in their inbox

oh cool. I added a comment to the answer too just now

Magic Octopus UrnWhere am I now? Given a string d, containing only the letters NSWE, determine the coordinates I've traveled (from left to right, consuming greedily) and the final coordinate where I reside. 1 hour later…
8:44 PM
I meant sum_{i=1}^{s-2} i = (s-2)(s-1)/2

9:07 PM
@ConorO'Brien You mean for(private int counter == 0;... and for(do == 0;...? Oh, and if class()[ounter, do] = break?
These are some great guidelines...

right??

Now I can't wait until test day

@flawr Why did they make it #RRGGBB‽ If they had made it #GGBBRR, then #C0FFEE would have been the colour of a latte.

NH.
someone needs to make an esolang that is only possible to program in if you are drunk
github.com/denysdovhan/wtfjs makes it seem like JS is that way...

I remember there's a program thingy which requires you to take a breathalizer in order to do sudo or smth

9:19 PM
Just get around it with üudo
The seeeecret next level

NH.
10:12 PM
is that uber sudo?
@Adám no, #C0FFEE would be a pinkish purplish color

#ffec0
looks latte

@FrownyFrog Missing an e

@NH. Oops, my bad; it should have been #BBRRGG.

I got a thing today

@Mego ^⍚^

Nit
Really cool.

@Mego Hey, I got the same thing! (Sans the penguin)

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Stick it on your cat and take a pic :P

10:38 PM
@Mego So that's a special SE mod perk?

Anonymous
@Adám Yep. Elected mods receive a hat, t-shirt, and stickers

@Mego @DJMcMayhem Will you wear it in public?

Anonymous
@Adám T-shirt yes, hat no. My head is too big for most hats

@Mego T-shirt has SE diamond too?

Anonymous
Yep

Anonymous
10:43 PM
I lied - it's just the SE logo

@Adám The shirt sure. I don't really like wearing hats though
@Mego I don't have a cat. I could put it on my girlfriend's cat though

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Do eet

@Mego @DJMcMayhem Oh, but having a SE t-shirt doesn't say much. If people see you in the street with a SE diamond… respect!

I'll make sure to ping you once I get around to it

Anonymous
Also as someone who used to have a girlfriend who had a cat: you will have a cat

10:44 PM
Convenient for my allergies :P

Anonymous
I'm fortunate that I'm not allergic to cats

^
But because I like cats; no girlfriends required

Anonymous
I also like cats, so it was a plus that her cat became my cat when I married her :P

:-D

@Mego I don't have a cat to put it on, so I improvised:

Anonymous
10:54 PM
@DJMcMayhem I approve

@DJMcMayhem The hat is way cooler than the t-shirt.

Anonymous
I could do something similar :P

I have 10 different instruments in my room.

Anonymous
I own 3 guitars and a clarinet

@DJMcMayhem Is that an acoustic?

10:57 PM
meanwhile thumbing through all my unused SE stickers like a mafioso counting a stack of $100 bills in a desperate attempt to cure my swag-envy

@LuisMendo Yeah. I originally put it on my Stratocaster since it's way nicer, but I decided it would look better on a thicker body
@quartata A couple months ago, I had no stickers. Then charcoal happened (and then the diamonds) and now I have way too many stickers

@DJMcMayhem I'm considering buying a 6-string bass. I want to test it in a shop first though

Holy crap! :O I know a five string adds a low B, but what does a 6 string add? Low F#?

It's just an octave below the guitar. So it starts at low E, like a bass
I love its sound
But it reportedly has some problems with intonation

@LuisMendo I think that isn't excessive enough. Could I interest you in this monstrosity? Or perhaps this abomination?

11:12 PM
@Cowsquack s t o l e n
@flawr @betseg r/ilikthebred

@DJMcMayhem Oh my. How can he even hold the thing?

Beats me

11:54 PM
@ASCII-only uh how to implement generatorr
