4:00 PM
And don't say "use triple for everything" -- that's an extra four bytes on every code snippet that 99% of the time doesn't need to be there. :p

It's not that hard to remember. You'll see it didn't display right, then fix it within the grace period.

@mbomb007 It's a little hard, but my family sometimes uses a white crayon to make white spots that stay white after the egg has been dyed

Neat. My family only ever used plastic eggs that we filled with candy and hid.
Or we sometimes made jello eggs like these: kraftrecipes.com/recipes/jell-o-egg-jigglers-50280.aspx

Heh, neat

You can make them multiple colors by using multiple layers of jello

4:04 PM
My family dyes several dozen hard-boiled eggs every year for our annual family egg hunt
The other day we all went over to a friend's house and dyed 9 dozen eggs...
I guess we're going to split them between our families though, so at least my family won't end up having to use 9 dozen hard-boiled eggs by ourselves

CMC: How (if at all) does your family celebrate Easter? Do you have any fun activities or traditions?
(inspired by ^^^^)

4:19 PM
@AdmBorkBork it was last night

@Riker The Easter Egg challenge? That was just posted an hour ago?

The bounties ad is broken again.

@AdmBorkBork oh, nvm, thought you replied to a different message
@mbomb007 yeah, I've noticed
not sure what to do

Personally, I think it has to do with HTTPS redirection, but idk.

^
@DJMcMayhem ok: when I yank with yw, and then paste with vp, I get exactly 1 paste out of that
like, it clears the register after pasting
how can I not clear the register?

4:32 PM
But the ad image is on HTTPS, so I'm not really sure.

> Internal Server Error
yeah, it's the server that's borked

Yeah, just saw that.
@DJMcMayhem Dinner with family, and church. 'Bout it, now.

^
except my aunt tries every year to have an easter egg hunt
it fails miserably
@EriktheOutgolfer many aren't actually
iirc the stack.imgur ones still work but the rest don't
they error like the bounty ad is currently, and if you try to edit they prompt you to fix it

@Riker But that doesn't have anything to do with redirection, since the server is already on HTTPS. Kyle must fix something for good...

4:48 PM
@Riker Fails as in no one participates or fails as in funny story time?

@Dennis You really can't, can you?

CMC: Given a string containing an even number of characters, reverse its character pairs. E.G. "abcdefgh" -> "ghefcdab"
@EriktheOutgolfer I don't see why they wouldn't be able to, they can also modify any part of your profile or straight-up delete your account.

@Pavel Japt, 8 bytes: f'.² w q

I don't know if the account-deletion is site-wide or network-wide though.

I think it's site-wide.
@Pavel GolfScript, 5 bytes: 2/-1% Try it online!

4:55 PM
@ETHproductions I can't get the run button to do anything, unless it's just really slow

@EriktheOutgolfer idk

@Pavel Odd, what browser are you using?

@Pavel her son in law/my cousin-in-law borks at least 1 thing every easter

nvm just as I said that it finished

by trying to hide an egg in it

4:56 PM
You can try TIO: Try it online!

BRB hiding a plastic egg in an xbox

AC, koi pond, dog food dispenser (tbf that would have broken in like a day anyway), ps3
@Pavel don't do it
he actually just shoved a starbursts pack in the disc drive of the ps3, but it still borked it

I won't, but honestly I'll probably dismantle it before I ever play anything on it.
Or sell it.

@Pavel 05AB1E, 4 bytes: 2ôRJ

@Pavel Jelly, 3 bytes: s2แนš Try it online! (takes quoted input)

5:01 PM
Maybe I should post on main

@Pavel No it would be too broad I think. Also, please sandbox first.

too broad is easy to fix
of course a 1 line cmc is unclear/too broad

Well obviously with test cases and better explanations.

@Pavel I think you should go for it

I think that it should not be just pairs though, but arbitary chunks.

5:09 PM
@Riker if you're doing vp, it'll always overwrite the register, there's no way around it
V has <M-p> which has actually never been used before
But it's kind of like R and p mixed

@EriktheOutgolfer Good idea. I'll also get rid of the requirement that the string length will be divisible by chunk length, anything left over at the end will be considered its own chunk.

@Pavel Maybe also ban built-in functions for separating into chunks?

@EriktheOutgolfer I don't think that would go over well, but then again, you never know

In some languages that would bump from one byte to two bytes and in others it would mean adding an entire for loop.

I feel that otherwise it would otherwise be as easy as ~/-1% in GS otherwise, for example.
Taking input as "abcdefgh" 2 for example.
Basically, 1) split into chunks 2) reverse.

5:16 PM
But how can I get onto HNQ if I ban the trivial solutions?
Besides, if you want a challenge, you could always try answering in something harder like brain-flak

@DJMcMayhem >:U
is there another way than vp then?

Related but not a duplicate at all

definitely

Huh? I wouldn't have linked...

@ETHproductions I read 9 at first
and was confused
@EriktheOutgolfer it's my challenge so I thought of it somewhat fast
but it's related in the splitting bits of strings
not that closely though

5:20 PM
Yeah, although splitting in chunks of specific lengths is an entirely different splitting.

@DJMcMayhem o_O which JS knockoff are you using??

CMC: Guess when NMP will post my new challenge in chat to the nearest minute.

prolly es5 or something

I'll say 25 after the hour

@HelkaHomba is it already posted on main?

5:20 PM
@HelkaHomba 15 minutes after the hour

@Pavel Brain-Flak 29 bytes: ([]){{}({}<({}<>)>)<>([])}<>

@ConorO'Brien it's already 21 after >_>

@HelkaHomba yes it will

@Riker es5 has filter >_>

idk

5:21 PM
@Riker oh.

;p

@Riker yes

@HelkaHomba 26 after the hour

4
Q: Turn me 22.5 with a rose

Helka HombaGiven a string that is one of the directions on a 16-point compass rose output the two directions that are immediately adjacent to the input direction, in clockwise order. Specifically, you need to handle these (and only these) input/output pairs: Input Output N NNW NNE NNE N NE NE ...

...

5:21 PM
YAY! I WON!

21 after

hahahaha
@EriktheOutgolfer no you didn't
you didn't give a time

"to the nearest minute." != "yes"
@HelkaHomba i guess you won?
o/ @MetaEd

Yeah, I assumed it would be "next minute".

5:22 PM
@Riker \o

you didn't say that tho
@MetaEd what brings you to our lair

I lurk here pretty often.

@Riker I was thinking the winner had to get the minute exact, but I guess :p

lol
@MetaEd ah k
tfw you both outgolf and out-get-votes dennis

5:24 PM
that square polyglot one
i just noticed I hit 31 votes, he has 28
ffs @UpWat really?

Oh I upvoted that. Literally though, it even reads "YOU!"

that's not original
>_<
@EriktheOutgolfer lol
contrary to most 1 byte solutions, that did indeed take effort, so I'm satisfied

Like "YOU! Dennis! Not this time ;)"
@Riker Yeah, I agree that we should probably stop copying Downgoat. Copying Downgoat doesn't help in being a diverse community at all >_>

no it's not that
it's not about the copying as much

And as Dennis noted it often appears as Down <???>, and it gets boring...

5:27 PM
it's about it being hard to differentiate them, and when told to be "original" he just switched to being up
which isn't original at all

Downgoat was Upgoat once, so no.

@EriktheOutgolfer I keep thinking you are NMP talking

My avatar huh? Yeah I have chosen that about a year ago.

nmp has had it for a lot longer ;P

But it isn't exactly the same.
Mine is high-quality, contrary to NMP's.

5:30 PM
yours is a clone of the site favicon

@ConorO'Brien QML (qt markup language)

> QML (Qt Meta Language or Qt Modeling Language) is a user interface markup language. It is a JSON-like declarative language for designing user interfaceโ€“centric applications. Inline JavaScript code handles imperative aspects.
ah, the inline JS isn't full JS?

@Riker uhhhhh ph"_x?

>:U
that's a lot longer

@Riker unfortunately not

5:34 PM
eh I'll work on it later

@Riker unfortunately yeah

5:45 PM
@DJMcMayhem you could always roll your own JS filter
does it have es6 features?

5:56 PM
@betseg you program in C right?

yes?

do you have any suggestions for a lightweight hash/dictionary library?

i dont even know if someone actually made a library

hm, ok

php used to use strlen for hashing. seeing php as one of the most used projects, i'd say give it a try :P

6:02 PM
wait what that seems like such a bad idea

¯\_(ใƒ„)_/¯
php

"shrug, php" seems about right for my experience with it

@Riker Why not? It's easily differentiatable from @Downgoat and I spent a bit of time making it
Also, please check out inventory.dk0.us
It's hosted on Heroku now

@UpWat what's this

@betseg Part of a system to manage items in a school's tech lab.
I'm completely rewriting it, this is alpha 0.0.1 of the rewrite

6:11 PM
user image
16

@Riker what's with the cat in the hat hat on Downgoat?

that's his current avatar
lol thanks for stars

@UpWat who are you?

oh

wat/dmitry/down wat

6:12 PM
@JanDvorak Click my profile picture

/tomato
/mendeleev/alt f-4

It's all in my chat profile description, just click the profile picture

... oh. The guy who keeps changing his identity.
2

@UpWat basically: you were asked to change your profile picture, as it was both too similar and part of a more annoying trend of copying people's avatars
and people said to be 'original'
aka don't copy somebody's avatar

No one said that

6:13 PM
or even base it off theirs extensively
2 days ago, by mbomb007
@DownWat There's only room for one Downgoat. If you're going to change your name, just be original about it. It's not cool to copy someone else. Especially if you're even copying their avatar style.

I was just told that it had to be easily distinguishable

> 15 stars

Oh, that. one sec

> just be original about it

also, why didn't @DownChristopher get the same warnings?

6:14 PM
he's not that anymore I thouht
he also hasn't been in chat very much since he changed his name/the day after that

Because it was less stale back then?

true
it was always as irritating but it wasn't as stale
but I think it's mostly because he hasn't been in chat

brb, changing name to DownRiker

@Downgoat please clarify

You want a clear rule? You'll get a clear rule. Use your real name, please.

6:16 PM
Oh, oh, wait ... Thomas Riker
3

@JanDvorak That was about something completely different. He was asking a vague question about nginx reverse proxying
I was asking him to clarify that

... oh?

:(
Click the reply arrow.

@AdmBorkBork I approve of this /s

Oh.

6:17 PM
have a star though that made me lol

Yay, stars. My reason for trudging through my daily torment of existence.

@JanDvorak brb changing name to lt william riker of the USS enterprise
@AdmBorkBork r/2meirl4meirl
that also sounds like something from smbc

And that subreddit sounds like someone had a mouth full of cereal and was trying to use speech-to-text

@JanDvorak I wouldn't do that, personally. I value my privacy.

@AdmBorkBork lol

6:19 PM

@AdmBorkBork :( I should've done that for april fools
oh well
I'll try next year

@Dennis This. I had my real name as my username at one point, things got kinda creepy with lots of doxxing/revealing of personal information

@UpWat well no dur when you have a quite uncommon name
and when you're not that private in general

@Riker That was in 6th grade!! I didn't know much about the internet then.

then don't go on the freaking internet

6:21 PM
ugh brb changing that profile to hidden

SE has a 13 year old limit for a reason

I'd use my real name but then people would get confused

@Riker come on my decisions in 6th grade should not affect my current life to that extent

too bad
with the internet, everything is forever

That's true. however, I can hide the info a little.

6:22 PM
well then do that

@ConorO'Brien Wait, that's not your real name?
TIL

it may or may not be

i think it's actually conan o'brien

Also, even right now if you google my name, all you get is some other Dmitry Kudriavtsev's, my Stack Exchange Profiles, and my Twitter account

6:23 PM
Yeah, I'll just go door-to-door to each of the 200,000+ people in the world with that name. knock, knock // door opens // "Do I know you from the Internet?" // facepunch

Not the huge blurb of middle school me that was there before

@AdmBorkBork no, you need to verbally say "picard facepalm dot gee eye eff"

@ConorO'Brien I have no idea, but I don't think so

"gee eye eff", really? It's either a gif or a jif, not a gee eye eff.

@DJMcMayhem if let k = 3; doesn't work it isn't es6

6:26 PM
@JanDvorak GEE EYE EFF! GEE EYE EFF! GEE EYE EFF!

I spell out the name btrfs because I have no freaking idea of how to pronounce it

Me, I'd say jif.

that's what I say
but for true internet_irl status you need to say GEE EYE EFF

I may allow gee eye eff if I disallow gif.

@UpWat b'troofs

6:27 PM
I want to post this one, but I need a little feedback first. Is it OK to let people time their solutions themselves?

If you want me to change back my username, please vote on my name poll. strawpoll.me/12746442

@UpWat .... the file system?

@Riker yes

@StewieGriffin I don't think so

@UpWat isn't that poll a placebo?

6:27 PM
mainly because people have different computers
it's not going to stay the same

@StewieGriffin No, that's not objective. Apart from being unverifiable, it's somewhat of a fastest computer contest.

somebody can have a really slow submission that runs really fast on their beast computer

@StewieGriffin People have very different computers. You would have one guy with a 1800X or 7700K and another with a Pentium 3
@JanDvorak please clarify

What I thought too, but I can't test it myself... :/

@Dennis Well, but the wall time isn't the main point of the challenge

6:28 PM
@Riker P2W challenge confirmed

@StewieGriffin Get a $5/mo Droplet from DigitalOcean and test it there. They're virtualized Linux servers.

@UpWat will the poll results affect what name you change your username to?

@JanDvorak Yes.

@betseg yea
@UpWat ... why?

Correction. Will the name you change your name to be the top voted one in this poll?

6:29 PM
> can't test myself

Looks like we need Time It Online.

@Dennis hehe :)

@JanDvorak Yes.

@UpWat I assume because he doesn't have the software
and a clean linux server won't either

apt install

6:30 PM
If the winning metric is number of reversals, then the wall time is just to put an upper bound on submissions.

@StewieGriffin why can't you install it?
@StewieGriffin well, if you restrict submissions to languages on TIO, that would work

@AdmBorkBork is right though, it's not fastest code... But people might try to optimize it so that it runs in approx a minute.

Well, so make it like 20 minutes
Even a 486 should be able to run some Python code in 20 minutes
I'm pretty sure your rationale behind the time limit is to prevent an all-and-out brute force style

So by majority, I'm going with Alt-F4.
Any objections?

@AdmBorkBork Yes, it's possible to brute force it, and that ruins the winning-criterion.

6:33 PM
@UpWat Majority? That's tied with your real name.

@Riker I lack the skills to run it, and my computer is rubbish.

ah, okay
@StewieGriffin if you want, I'd be happy to test anything I could for you

@Dennis When I loaded the page my name only had 1 vote. I am also retracting the poll entry for my real name. for privacy reasons.

if you don't end up using a fastest-algorithm instead
just noting: those are cool colors on the poll results

I don't see a problem with letting people verify their own submissions run under a minute.

6:34 PM
I've never seen pink or purple

Everyone who voted for my real name, please clear the strawpoll cookie and vote for something else

@Riker That would be great! :)

@UpWat listen: at this point, just pick a name and keep it
3

Or two, or five, or whatever.

it doesn't really matter that much as long as it's not a clone of somebody elses
okay?

6:35 PM
@Riker That's what I'm trying to do. (Sorry capslock)

@UpWat So much for democracy.

don't ask people for opinions IMO
@AdmBorkBork oh, it's under a minute? I thought it was full fastest-code, not jst a limit

all right, I've chosen a name. omg why does this have to be a big deal

@Riker The wall time limit is just to put an upper bound on the submissions. The actual scoring is number of reversals.

@AdmBorkBork I too think it should be OK, maybe I'd just go for it, it's easiest :)

6:36 PM
I mean, we already allow people to say "Well, it works on my machine / on my compiler / on my environment" etc.

@Riker TIO is a very bad choice for timing submissions. It's currently using three different arena servers (each of which is slightly faster or slower than the others, and you never know if your submission is going to be the only one running at this point.
Hence the need for Time It Online, where all submissions would run on the same server, one after the other, never in parallel.

Like those esoteric-machine-from-the-80s-assembly programs. Pretty sure practically no one but the author can verify if it works, but those are still allowed.

@Dennis Please eleven my chat profile.

Do you (not directed at anyone in particular) think 100 numbers are too few, too many? And is one minute an appropriate limit?

6:51 PM
for what?

user165474
@UpWat Really...? Up Wat now? :P

@Dennis ah ok

I changed it ffs -_____-

@AdmBorkBork ah, okay
i'ts fixed for me
mendeleev right

@Mendeleev yeah, hence the discussion

6:59 PM
The fastest 11 I've ever saw.

user165474
@Mendeleev Oh, well then I just had a cached version because I just got on here.

Thanks Dennis
