Gadsby is a 1939 novel by Ernest Vincent Wright written as a lipogram, which does not include words that contain the letter "e". The plot revolves around the dying fictional city of Branton Hills, which is revitalized as a result of the efforts of protagonist John Gadsby and a youth group he organizes. Though self-published and little-noticed in its time, the book is a favourite of fans of constrained writing and is a sought-after rarity among some book collectors. Later editions of the book have sometimes carried the alternative subtitle 50,000 Word Novel Without the Letter "E". In 1968, the novel...

@Luke egilops?

user165474
According to a quick Python one-liner I wrote which operates on a file that has all of the commonly used English words and also most of the other uncommon ones, ['deimos', 'abhors', 'almost', 'begins', 'biopsy', 'chimps', 'chinos', 'chintz'] are all of the six-letter strictly-increasing words. According to the program there are no 7-letter ones.

longest word in usr/share/dict/words
@HyperNeutrino usr/share/dict/words has a nice list of all of them

@mbomb007 That's impressive

user165474
@Riker Okay, thanks, I'll use that.

user165474
7:01 PM
wait that is the one I was using lol

To answer the original CMC:
Python, 32 bytes: lambda l:sorted(set(l))==list(l)

@HyperNeutrino o_O

user165474
Yup according to that, those 8 are the longest.

user165474
But I'm forcing lowercase on all of them which may/may not affect the results.

hm

7:04 PM
ghosty works also
Also dehors

> abdest, acknow, adipsy, agnosy, almost, befist, behint, beknow, bijoux, biopsy, chintz, dehors, dehort, deinos, dimpsy, egilops, ghosty

my system returns "adelops" and "egilops" as the only 2 7-letter words

@fergusq I was trying out the sort function in Röda when I found out that I can't do b = sort(a). I get a "stream is full" error. I know I could just sort(a) | {|i|b.=i}_, but is there a better way to do it?

@KritixiLithos Stream is full means that the function returns more than one value, but you try to assign it to a single variable (there are too many values). You can put [] around the function call to make a list of all return values, or a = sort(b) | pull to get only the first return value (smallest item in the list).
sort(b) | tail returns the last value.

Oh right, the [] trick is the same that can be used for getting an array from seq

7:18 PM
It works in the same way for every function that returns many values.
I have a design principle that I should not return a single array from a function, if it's possible to return the items themselves (multiple return values). It makes it a lot easier to iterate through them using pipes: sort(b) | .... If the function returned a single array, I would have to do (sort(b))() | ... to pipe them to another function, which I think is unpractical.

And the double parenthesis just prints each value in the array, right?
But now I see the significance of returning streams instead of arrays

@Riker I get adelops, alloquy, beefily, begorry, billowy, egilops

@betseg O_o

Oh wait, I'm dumb, there are repeating characters

7:25 PM
@KritixiLithos huh
ah

@betseg The longest word in Finnish has 102 characters: fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pisimm%C3%A4t_sanat

@KritixiLithos RIP

It's kumarreksituteskenteleentuvaisehkollaismaisekkuudellisenneskenteluttelemattomamm‌uuksissansakaankopahan
I have no idea what it means

@fergusq don't you guys do things like german, with sticking adjectives to nouns?

@fergusq lol
@Riker we dont but ve have too many suffixes

7:26 PM
It's theoretically correct, but it has so complex structure that it is nearly impossible to interpret.

@betseg lol
@KritixiLithos also, if you're like me and try to test that on web2a, don't
it doesn't work, space and dash both have ords less than all the letters
and web2a is specifically for phrases and compound words, so all words have that

@Riker In Finnish we can put modifier suffixes after the main word, like "tässäkin" means "here also" (tässä+kin). "kirjanikin" means "also my book" (kirja+ni+kin)
So that long word just has about every suffix there exists.

oh, cool

Actually that word is a compound word that has two parts: "kumarreksituteskenteleentuvaisehkollais" and "maisekkuudellisenneskenteluttelemattomamm‌uuksissansakaankopahan"
Both parts have a lot of suffixes

7:30 PM
in the wikipedia page i posted you can see the suffixes in a table

It seems that Turkish works in very similarly to Finnish.

some people say turkic and uralic language families are related

Words with multiple suffixes are confusingednessly.

did you meant confusingedly? :)

doesnt confusingly have 2 suffixes?

7:35 PM
(nb4 someone points out that suffixes work drastically differently in Finnish than English)
@seshoumara 'twas yolk

@PhiNotPi what?

@KritixiLithos In Röda, you can "call" a list like a function to push its items to the stream: [1,2,3](). If f returns a list and you want to push its items to the stream, you must do first f() to get the list and then surround it with parentheses due to precedence and call it again: (f())().
Actually just (f()) works.

@seshoumara just... nevermind. I tried to make a joke, and then I tried to make a pun, but then nobody got it.

@ГригорийПерельман huh, friend just got me "You Died: The Unofficial Dark Souls Companion" for a gift
pretty epic book: you-died.com

7:52 PM
My Vundle's borking. But luckily there's another option. Thanks for the advice @quartata!

I was just mystified by the fact that when I inserted some external data into an HTML element, a style was being applied that I hadn't added myself... then I realized I had added it myself

@fergusq So f()() would not work?

@Mendeleev It works at expression level but not at statement level.

Oh

@Riker To my surprise, I hadn't seen that before! Yeah, it's cool!
I'm going ot see if I can get one myself.
Oh, they don't ship internationaly, and it's published in Europe.
:(

8:01 PM
I regret everything

it happens

An attempt was made.

It's been a long day/week

What was removed?

But I'm prepared for 4 months from now
@Mendeleev Me being stupid =/

8:02 PM
@BasicSunset But what happened?

Someone mixed up their fractions. :P

ok?
I can't see deleted messages

My Slanty letters let me see deleted messages. It's nice.

@DJMcMayhem Why is your name italic btw?

room owner

8:04 PM
oh

28
Q: Please welcome The Nineteenth Byte's newest room owners!

DennisYou've cast your votes and elected the following three members of our community as room owners of our primary chat room, The Nineteenth Byte. They have been appointed, effective immediately. Please join us in thanking them for volunteering, and may the odds be ever in their favor.

@DJMcMayhem no, I know that, but I didn't know that it italicized names.

Oh, I see

@ГригорийПерельман o_O I live in CA

@BasicSunset You could still call it pi-approximation day. I don't see why not just counting them backwards. :shrug:

8:06 PM
It's just a very bad approximation I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

holy s*** icloud actually did something useful

There's probably a catch behind that useful thing

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem It took me like 2 weeks to realize I could see deleted messages

Anonymous
But not in the transcript, though, and I can't see where they were in chat if I refresh

@KritixiLithos found it
I wanted to send a 36 MB .mov file

8:12 PM
Woah, I can see deleted messages in rooms I own...

yea
can't by email, but "mail drop" "worked"
nope. it sent me an ultra high res .mov file with 1 frame

Heh heh

>_<
it's not a .mov

@Riker Try Google Drive or a USB cable

it's a gif named "IMG_0182.mov", with the extension .gif
@Mendeleev gdrive already worked

8:15 PM
LOL

@Riker Turn on extensions in windows or stop using windows
That's how you get virused

using mac ;p

Or turn on extensions in finder preferences

I have
it just didn't show bc it was in an email

@Riker Did you just edit your message and delete your message history?

8:16 PM
Then how did it not show that it was a .mov?
Ninjad

@KritixiLithos ... no?
fwiw it still shows a pencil even if I purge history

@Riker What email provider do you use?

twc/spectrum for the service, but gmail account

ISP email? Why?
oh nm

@Riker Did you edit the message or not?

8:17 PM
nope

(or am I delusional)

yer a delusional person 'arry

@Riker Maybe your friend was in Europe recently?

With the math expression 27 % 20 = 7, can the number 20 be called the "modulus"? I guess I could call it a "divisor" but I feel that implies division.

I thought you said something like "I'm not using Windows"

8:18 PM
@ГригорийПерельман ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ more likely he got it off ebay or something
@KritixiLithos ah, nope
I did say icloud tho
and iirc windows doesn't support that
@KritixiLithos I only use windows for playing OW

Probably. Does anyone here play broforce?

Talking to myself here: Stop. Get some help.

@ГригорийПерельман nope, sorry

I'm stuck on the Satan fight

I greatly prefer Android to iOS
I would use AirDrop if my iPhone 4S (!) supported it
oops I guess I accidentally a word

8:22 PM
@Mendeleev so do I, but I do have an ipad

@Riker I have a Nexus 7 and iPhone 4S

maybe this makes a better PPCG fastest-code challenge? math.stackexchange.com/questions/2186041/…
it's a little less obscure

Oh cool, I hadn't realized you asked that on Math.SE

user165474
I have an Acer computer and phone

@HyperNeutrino I've heard bad things about Acer computers. How's it working out for you?

user165474
8:37 PM
@Mendeleev It's working quite well, it runs nicely and its battery life is pretty good. The hardware hasn't gotten any worse except the streak across the screen caused by the keyboard rubbing against the screen when it's closed (which is one of the issues, though this is also present with many other models and manufacturers).

@HyperNeutrino I've never had this problem.

user165474
@Mendeleev Okay. Like for example my teacher last year had a macbook whose screen had the entire keyboard imprinted on it in reverse... so some models are worse than others at this, mine seems mediocre in terms of this. typically good models won't have the thingy

@Downgoat The issue with the borked PPCG userscript seems to be that $ is no longer defined for some reason
Now why the heck is that?

Broforce is a great game.
I just beat Statan True Form on hard
I feel good about life.

Okx
but what is life?

8:54 PM
...apparently the userscript now can't access global variables that are loaded on the page?
this must be some HTTPS trickery

lol

Well that ruins a whole bunch of things... We use jQuery about 200 times throughout the userscript

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Dead PossumNot so good roads in Rnccia codegolfasciiart Here in absolutely made up country Rnccia we have a lot of good stuff, but roads aren't one. There are lots of holes and just half of them get fixed. And only half of fixes are good. Your task is to embrase bad roads of this country and draw them for ...

9:18 PM
Wow, I was pretty close. The real number is 190

Does the cow in cowsay count?
Btw there should've been a "no pets" answer and an "other" answer too imo

@Riker 3 young cats that a boarder collie tries desperately to herd

@betseg hm, true

@MistahFiggins 3>1 so you vote "cat"?

9:29 PM
@Riker I answered "Dog" cause my parents have a dog, but I forgot that I don't live with them anymore, lol

> Check all that apply

@DJMcMayhem haha

So zero I guess

@MistahFiggins oh I didn't see that

CMC: When your input is 2, output "xy". When your input is 3, output "xyz". When your input is 4, output "wxyz". You may use all-uppercase instead.

9:33 PM
Closed: dup

@JanDvorak no other input?

No other input

JS, 23 bytes: n=>"wxyz".substr(n<4,n)

Nice

@JanDvorak can we use 3,4,5 or 1,2,3?

9:36 PM
As in, change the input values? I'm curious how that would help

1 indexed languages

Inputs 3,4,5 would allow me to change substr to slice, saving a byte

Gnite

night!

The inputs represent the length of the output

9:37 PM
yeah, but for slicing

Oh, I see. Slicers want to index after the last character

hm

20 bytes in V: Try it online!
I really don't like that solution though. Horribly golfed
I don't see any better way though. :/

A direct translation into Japt would be "wxyz"tU<4U, 11 bytes

can we require input as a keystroke in vim @DJMcMayhem?

9:41 PM
Tbh I'm not sure
@Riker Why? Do you have something better?

I don't know how else that's why

Actually, ;Ct22|U<4U saves a byte. Test it online!

I just noticed-- 0 is actually a CJam quine, along with any other number

Perl, 23 bytes: perl -pe '$_=w x/4/.xy.z x($_>2)'

@Zwei not by our rules I don't think

9:42 PM
@Riker The other way is D@"

oh, really?

it to 'encode a differnt part of the program'
1\n is a quine in many golfing languagues, but invalid by our rules

I thought that the rules were 1) cannot be empty 2) cannot read from source file

@DJMcMayhem :h D; :h @; :h "

9:44 PM
@Zwei we have more standard ones

ah

17
Q: What counts as a proper quine?

AJMansfieldThe basic definition of a quine is a program that, when run, produces its own source code as output. There are a number of techniques and a number of way to implement those techniques across a number of different languages. However, not all quine programs are equal. Clearly, any quine in HQ9+ or...

@Riker Delete this line into the main register. Run main register as if typed

oh, cool
I got as far as "delete in register", but I didn't get the next bits

:h "" will probably be more useful

9:47 PM
Poll for Android users only: Which Android version are you using?

I don't know the names...
7.1.1 for me though

@DJMcMayhem JB:4.1-4.3, K:4.4, L:5.x, M:6.x, N:7.x, and then O
You have Nougat

@DJMcMayhem ok that's really cool

so jelly

Ugh

9:53 PM
@Riker Yeah, without registers, you couldn't do like half of the things vim answers usually do

ya

Or without register playback at least

@betseg What even is that? Not an android user here, but those sound like just names for candy, bar the last one

@betseg is 'arda' a common name in turkey?
@MistahFiggins android does that on purpose
OS versions are named after candy

OK then

9:54 PM
but welcome @MistahFiggins and @flawr

@MistahFiggins they name them after candy names
Ninja'd

Must be a pain to search for

What will O be?

@Riker heya

o/

9:55 PM
\o

@Riker recently, yes. IIRC it was the most common boys' name in 2007 or 2008

P could be pretzel

oh cool

@JanDvorak dunno
@MistahFiggins add android in front of it and voilà

> a female Armenian given name
> Arda is a male name used in Turkey;
huh, somewhat interesting it's a name for different genders in different countries

9:57 PM
My name comes from that, don't know about the Armenian name:

people named arda like dying wigs apparently

The Arda (Bulgarian: Арда, Arda, Turkish: Arda, Greek: Άρδας, Árdas) is a 290-kilometre (180 mi) long river in Bulgaria and Greece. It is a tributary of the Maritsa (Greek: Έβρος, Evros). Its source lies in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains near the village Arda, part of the municipality of Smolyan. It flows eastward past Rudozem, Kardzhali and Ivaylovgrad and enters Greece in the northern part of the Evros regional unit. It flows into the Maritsa on the border of Greece and Turkey, between the Greek village Kastanies and the Turkish city Edirne. In the Bulgarian section there are three hydroelectric...

@betseg oh, cool

How do you pronounce it? In my head, it looks like ARE-duh but I have no clue if that's right

9:58 PM
I posted a IPA version of my name

I can't understand IPA... ;_;

Then, yeah, that pronunciation is right

Oh, ok cool.
I've mispronounced names so many times haha
Like Helka and riker

Watch some football, you'll see someone talking about Arda Turan
Not the foot-long ball, the ball that you kick with your foot

@DJMcMayhem :D

10:01 PM
@DJMcMayhem abhors, almost, begins, biopsy, chimps, chintz.

@betseg I figured ;)

@JanDvorak Pretzels aren't (intrinsically) sweet! O could be Oreo or Orange sherbet or Oh Henry...

While we're on the topic, how the heck do you pronounce @flawr? In my head it's always been like flower

Oreo sounds plausible

I pronounce it "flahr"

10:03 PM
I pronounce it in my head like "fla-ARR"

flaw-err?

@DJMcMayhem I pronounce it floor >_>

flower

So basically everyone in here says it differently?

or floor, depending on my mood

10:04 PM
O dev prev's logo is orange colored, the name could be about oranges

All those sound good I think

It could be an acronym

Orange juice then?

at least better than some germans pronounce it when I play video games.

Well that doesn't help us narrow it down at all lol

10:05 PM
@HelkaHomba fast levitating alligator wanting roses

even flour would work

@DJMcMayhem btw that's not right, you have to roll the r :p

I'd probably end up sounding like an idiot if I tried to do that

@Downgoat for love and without remorse

Flawr fLawr flAwr flaWr flawR

10:10 PM
Now ArtofCode looks like Yodle

@betseg as I said: Just don't do it the way some germans do with a gutural r

I come bearing gifts in search of volunteers to help test a Node thing, if that floats anyone's boat

@ArtOfCode pick me!
(maybe, IDK if I can help at all)

@PhiNotPi if you can use a text editor and a command line, you can.
I wrote a guide for a project I'm doing, but being the dev I have no idea if it works for someone with zero project knowledge

i can haz windoz?

10:13 PM
should run on Windows, yeah

I'm gonna have to install node

that would help

@ArtOfCode did somebody say node

@Downgoat me

@DJMcMayhem I pronounce it like "flaw"+"flower"

10:36 PM
I Pronounce it as Flaw-yer.

@ATaco "F Lawyer"?

Basically, yeah.

I'm still streaming FTL...

The fact that most OEIS sequences have Mathematica code written for them makes a language that has an OEIS function rather possible.

11:01 PM
Hey guys I'm streaming development of my inventory system
OH SHIT that's my stream key
Guess who's resetting that

BRB Hijacking yo stream

I reset it already

Curses, I didn't even see the key.

11:24 PM
@Mendeleev I purged the history of your message just in case, should be ok now

Can anyone with Ruby on Rails experience please help me?
@Riker Thanks
Basically I have a stream here youtube.com/watch?v=m2R9C56jKlQ
I am having this very strange issue where my application is not even loggin the error it's getting

11:36 PM
has anyone seen split-depth gifs? reddit.com/r/SplitDepthGIFS/top they use white lines on a gif to add a cool pseudo-3D visual effect.

In the examples below, land is # and water is ., but you may substitute any two distinct characters you wish. .........

@Mendeleev btw your face is showing in avatar, just in case you don't want to show that
@PhiNotPi yes 10/10 best sub

@Mendeleev Oh you aren't a new user...

haha

Your usernames have no connection to each other
at least if they were anagrams they could be figured out

11:44 PM
... github uses \r\n in its backend

And..?
Most OS's allow \r\n, not all OSs allow just \n.

Everything sane uses \n
I'm mostly surprised, that's all

@MistahFiggins fixed the bug

how do I stitch together all images in a dir with ffmpeg?
