I was looking about code golf and ended up in a page about Kolmogorov Complexity, interesting concept, how we can relate the complexity of something with how hard it is to describe it in any known language
if i look at the evaluations NMS is bad :/
I was wondering if golf programming languages have a practical use, like maybe compression of information?
@Dennis Works perfectly in my ElementaryOS VM. Thanks so much!
I really appreciate your help.
I considered opening it in my Ubuntu VM, but the eOS one boots so quickly that it was hard to justify testing it in anything else ;)
No problem. I just wish I knew why it isn't working with OS X.
BSD utlilities are garbage?
21:04
wat the fuck
That's probably it.
(it's a &)
As a community, we should make the perfect OS
It already exists, it's Windows
21:05
hate comments in 3, 2, 1...
@Adnan that's true
^^ the best OS ever. ever. ever. ever. ever.
yup
he admits it
indeed
21:06
I'll just go away before my head explodes.
@TùxCräftîñg it's okay, you don't need to hide it
@TùxCräftîñg -1 can't install on windows
I think I accidentally uninstalled the browser in my VM
21:08
@AlexA. That could be a problem.
Well, it's certainly not ideal
@AlexA. In Windows, that wouldn't be a problem, since you still have Internet Explorer
@Adnan you can remove IE
@Adnan seems like one of the only uses of IE
I'd rather have no browser at all.
21:09
s/Internet Explorer/an atomic crap/
@ConorO'Brien Not if you want Visual Studio to work
@TùxCräftîñg s/a/an/
I uninstalled IE on my Windows VM a long time ago, then tried to run Visual Studio and it wouldn't even start until I reinstalled IE. :/
@AlexA. Or install Corel Draw. It needs IE to display the EULA.
21:11
its an underhanded way of forcing people to keep IE
but hey, there's edge! which is totally better
@Dennis Wow, they were so close to making functioning software
Edge is better
but a true browser is better
@ConorO'Brien In my case this was before Edge was a thing. I agree Edge is marginally better than IE but I'm not a fan of either. I do Windows browsing on Chrome at work.
21:12
@RohanJhunjhunwala google.com/…
no
darn it
crap
Hahaha
sorry
21:13
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ It required IE
Why doesn't chrome just filter source forge as a malicious sight
@RohanJhunjhunwala because SF is not malicious... ?
@TùxCräftîñg not technically
@AlexA. self-support between Kro$oft products
21:14
@RohanJhunjhunwala because adnan paid them off
lol @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ are you planning to go to ascii only?
you should consider
> Update: Since the writing of this article, SourceForge has been sold to a new company that stopped the DevShare program discussed in this article. We’re leaving this article here for historical reference, but it has since stopped these shady practices.
DevShare... a good name for a bstrd pratice
still imho once a trojan distributor always a trojan distributor
21:16
@RohanJhunjhunwala not anymore than I did.
And I'd appreciate if people stopped asking me to.
@AlexA. The best part is that there is no actual error message. It just hangs.
@AlexA. I like it, this guys is quite good!
Is this a classical or a regular guitar?
my computer is stupid
21:20
@TùxCräftîñg In german there is the ancient saying, that a computer is at most as stupid as the guy sitting in front of it.
...
but this dont include penguins
penguins can be guys
................................................................................‌.....................
21:33
@flawr It's a regular steel string acoustic
Is it a bad idea to sudo chown $USER -R /usr/local?
I mean, I suppose it doesn't matter all that much at this point because I already did it, but for future reference...
llama@llama:~$ find /usr/local -not -user $USER
/usr/local
/usr/local/sbin
/usr/local/games
/usr/local/include
/usr/local/etc
/usr/local/src
/usr/local/share
/usr/local/share/man
/usr/local/bin
/usr/local/man
/usr/local/lib
So... I guess not, but you should maybe set the owner of all the subdirectories back to root
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ meh

Q: One out of Infinity: Plotting polynomials

Nathan MerrillFor this challenge, when given a list of (x,y) points your submission needs to output a polynomial function that goes through all of them. For example, if your points were [(0,0), (2,5)], you could return y = 2.5*x or y = x + 1/4x^2. All points passed in will consist only of integers Two point...

Is it possible to do array slicing in Bash?
You can get by index, but how would you specify a range of indices?

Q: How to slice an array in bash

Chen Levy(edited to fit the answer) Looking the "Array" section in the bash(1) man page, I didn't find a way to slice a bash array. So I came up with this overly complicated function: #!/bin/bash # @brief: slice a bash array # @arg1: output-name # @arg2: input-name # @args: seq args # -------------...

10/10 that exist
Cool, thanks

There are worse things than parsing HTML with regex.
Such as a table exported from MS word as HTML.
._.
and then parsing those with regex
@ConorO'Brien Pretty sure that's what @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ was saying
@ASCII-only nope. he's saying that MS word HTML tables are worse than parsing HTML with regex
But then using images as padding is at least almost as bad
plus, there was this guy that created an entire game without a concept of OOP, loops or arrays
@ASCII-only not every browser supports css
don't be mean
@quartata The images won't show on lynx anyway
@ASCII-only This doesn't sound so bad, just use recursion
@quartata which decade are they from? :P
@quartata maximum recursion limit
22:15
@ConorO'Brien 1999 technically
Oh shit, since when did Dillo support CSS
@quartata I don't think he knew about that either
@quartata I misread "dillo"
@AlexA. That would be very technologically impressive
Also get your mind out of the gutter you silly bird
22:17
@ConorO'Brien Plenty of languages have tail call elimination nowadays
@quartata sorry, I assumed browser
Anyone here play KSP? I'm thinking of buying it sometime when it goes on sale
Kerbal Space Program?
Nope. Looks fun though.
22:21
The question is is it $40 worth of fun
Doesn't look like it IMO
Today I found a PPCGer on reddit.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ who?
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I once happened across a comment on Imgur by a C.SE user, which was weird and unexpected.
22:28
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Mego is also there
ik
just I saw his post while browsing other stuff
haven't seen any of megos except one he linked in here once
Pretty easy to find Doorknob on /r/nethack and /r/conlangs
and /r/lojban
I do have a Reddit account (under this name that is) that I don't use
Mostly just browse
I'll admit I was a very late Reddit adopter, I used to prefer Digg for news
please don't lynch me
I just made a reddit account yesterday :P
22:34
I've been using mine to waste quite a lot of time so far.
lel
@quartata we've had discussion against reddit in the past here, i don't think that's happening. :P
I've had a Reddit account for a long time, but I've done very little with it. Even regarding voting.
halp, is it okay to store a plain cipher iv
22:41
how do i store the iv then
you dont
you give up
but SO says it's fine to store iv with ciphertext
I'm bored, ima go post my sandboxed challenge
only trust the llama
22:52
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ The lamma isn't here atm
then trust geobits
he's always here
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ But I don't see Geobits either
then look behind you
turns around
Don't see a downvote there either

Q: Given an integer, compute its Levenshtein code

LegionMammal978Disclaimer: Levenshtein coding is completely unrelated to the Levenshtein edit distance metric. <Insert long story about why Levenshtein codes need to be calculated here.> The code Levenshtein coding is a system of assigning binary codes to nonnegative integers that retains some weird property...

@Dennis Just realized this has testnames in it (not only that, but it has it twice) near the end of the array

Q: Is the interpreter part of the language or a separate language?

MarLinnAs I understand it, for our purposes a language is more or less defined by its implementation. That's one of the reasons why a program like Vim can also be "language". You just count keystrokes instead of bytes. But consider the case of Haskell with its standard compiler + interpreter of ghc/ghc...

@AlexA. Well, there's more than one testnames = [ in the file... This should work:
x=($(< choosetests.jl tr -d \\n|grep -Eo 'testnames = \[\W*"[^]]*\]'|grep -Eo '\w*'|tail -n+2))
That works perfectly! Thanks!
Hey, a wild Bits appeared
I finally remembered how to test Haskell answer without having to cry for help. \o/
The wild Bits used Charm!
@Geobits ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I have a feeling you and your kiddo are playing a fair bit of Pokemon Go. Is that a fair assumption?
@Dennis \o/ Haskell is pain!
23:34
Yep. Not so much together yet, as he just got back into town from summer break.
Father and son reunited at last
I really dislike that Bash case blocks end with esac.
Hello, @AlexA.! It's been long! Or maybe it's just me...
Hey! Congrats on passing me in rep :D
Yeah I haven't been around much lately. I've been very busy.
23:40
Haha. Thanks!
I hope it's been good-busy, not boring-busy or bad-busy
Kind of a mix of all of those
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ yeah?
Oh, hi, @AlexA.!!~
Hello! Congrats to you as well for passing me in rep ;D
I think I passed you in rep, like… two days ago
23:46
You did indeed
@El'endiaStarman I'm using your transcript parser and your name seems to be truncated at the single quote
El
Oh damn, rekt'endia
Kind of a problem since I need the username to get the next ping
@El obviously isn't going to match
If you're OK with my bot never saying you've ever said then I'll just roll with it ;)
Our top users list is really funny if you look at the tags for each user
Because it’s just code-golf, code-golf, code-golf
The problem with having multiple challenge types
If we were just golf we could blacklist code-golf
23:50
Yeaaah
@Lynn It's almost like code golf is the majority of our challenges or something
As it stands it kinda drowns out the other tags in terms of question volume (not a bad thing but)
@AlexA. Inconceivable
Yeah, not like it's part of the name of the site or anything
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

23:51
It is a little silly, because e.g. its tag gold badge is very easy to get (I got it without noticing… I was very confused about suddenly having gold, one day)
Ack! I'm not on page one any more :(
@AlexA. Oi, Haskell is great
@AlexA. ;)
@Geobits I think you're still getting swag though
It’s like if SO had a
@Lynn It took me forever to get gold ;-;
@quartata Oh, sure. I'm not worried about that. But my precious ego...
23:53
@Lynn Then again, the only non code golf gold tag badge is Dennis's number badge I think...
Oh, nevermind. He has tag badges in string math and number...
This is new
pretty sure i've seen some other gold tag badges, idk if martin has any
and shouldn't be hard to get
They are quite general
@ASCII-only Martin only has string
I'm pretty sure they're the only two with gold tag badges in anything other than code golf
I wonder if anyone will ever get gold
@quartata i dont think there will ever be 200 popcons
There are 378
23:57
bum dad um
Sorry didn't use words correctly
